Any Eileen Heckart fans here ?

I've always enjoyed Heckart's work - especially in the movie 'Butterflies Are Free'. Loved her as Mary's Aunt Flo in 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' in the 70s. The past few weeks, a play titled "Marilyn, Mom and Me" (about Marilyn Monroe and Heckart) has had a successful run at the Beverly O'Neill Theater in Long Beach, CA.

Any Heckart fans here ? Anyone have a chance to see the play in LB ?

I love Eileen Heckart. And if anyone who wasn't Bette Davis was going to teach Shirley Booth to smoke cigarettes, it was her.

Now that you mention it, yes, I am a fan. She was a very compelling actress.

Hell yes! She was one of the most talented actresses in the world! She was brilliant and unforgettable.

Eileen makes the most of the first color episode of To Tell the Truth.

I saw her in her final stage production, “The Waverly Gallery,” in which she played a grandmother with Alzheimer’s. (May won a Tony for the same role in its revival on Broadway. May was very good, but she wasn’t Heckart). One of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen.

I saw it as well, r7. A friend of mine worked on it and Eileen was very ill and they weren't always sure she'd be able to go on.

I read the book by her son Luke Yankee who is, I believe, a homosexualist.

Shelly Winters was not amused that her nomination came after 'Fat City' and that guy on stage couldn't stop laughing.

There's either talk or wishful thinking that 'Marilyn, Mom and Me' may move to off-Broadway next year, since it had great reviews and a successful run.

I liked her but not nearly as much as Thelma Ritter. I didn’t really buy Aunt Flo’s affair with Lou Grant though. She was old enough to be his mother.

by Anonymousreply 15March 2, 2024 12:57 AM

I enjoyed her in Burnt Offerings, so creepy.

Her son is a nice guy and a talented director. I’ve worked with both him AND his husband.

R1 Her performance in Bad Seed was amazing. She was on the screen less than 10 minutes and tore your heart out. Eileen also played the part on the stage; I can't imagine working up that kind of emotion for such a small scene every night.

r18 - She left before the end of the run because it got too grueling. I believe she was replaced by Pert Kelton. There aren't understudies listed on IBDb...I can't imagine *that* production didn't have them.

She played Paul Newman's troubled mother in "Somebody Up There Likes Me," although she was only 6 years older than him. I'm a fan of hers, but it's one of her rare really bad performances.

Hortense. Sounds fat.

by Anonymousreply 22March 2, 2024 3:10 AM

Didn't she play the mother-in-law who gave Alice such a hard time in Mel's Diner? I loved her.

by Anonymousreply 23March 2, 2024 3:15 AM

R18 Makes sense. Working up to that level of drunken angst offstage, then bringing it on stage for 10 minutes, and then being able to come down from it every night had to be grueling. I would love to have heard her talk about that experience.

She is camp in the camp in The Hiding Place.
