Variety lists the 40 actors who should have an Oscar nomination but don’t

Great list, honestly. Jim Carrey was robbed of a nomination for Eternal Sunshine.

Richard Gere's failure to receive a nomination is striking, particularly the year he was passed over for "Chicago." I also thought he would get one for "Arbitrage." What did he do to warrant such disdain from the academy?!

by Anonymousreply 1March 1, 2024 7:47 PM

R1 he didn’t deserve a nomination for Chicago at all.

by Anonymousreply 2March 1, 2024 7:50 PM

He didn't get one for Chicago because he wanted to be in lead.

by Anonymousreply 3March 1, 2024 7:54 PM

I’m a Richard Gere fan. Always have been. With that said, he’s never given an Oscar worthy performance. The only movie I would nominate him for is Pretty Woman. That’s it.

He’s the definition of a movie star vs an actor.

by Anonymousreply 4March 1, 2024 7:57 PM

Woke list by DEI writer.

by Anonymousreply 5March 1, 2024 7:57 PM

Billy Flynn was a LEAD character. It is embarassing when a lead has to compete in the supporting category to secure a nomination or win.

by Anonymousreply 6March 1, 2024 8:00 PM

There may have been three "leads" in the stage version, but the film version made it clear that this was Roxie's story and everyone else was orbiting her.

by Anonymousreply 7March 1, 2024 8:04 PM

Sutherland not ever being nominated is a surprise to me.

by Anonymousreply 8March 1, 2024 8:06 PM

[quote] He’s the definition of a movie star vs an actor.

That is an irrelevant distinction for Oscar, which has been given to actors and movie stars. I could understand how he might never win. Very fine actors -- some might say the finest of their generation -- have never won. But Gere has certainly warranted a nomination, in at least two instances.

by Anonymousreply 9March 1, 2024 8:06 PM

[quote] Woke list by DEI writer.

Anyone bleating out the word "woke" will be publicly buggywhipped in the town square.

by Anonymousreply 10March 1, 2024 8:07 PM

R9 some movie stars are very good actors. Some movie stars aren’t. Gere was always good at what he did but not a versatile actor at all and definitely just a movie star carried by his charisma and charm and looks. He’s never gotten lost in a role.

by Anonymousreply 11March 1, 2024 8:08 PM

The Donald Sutherland thing makes me crazy. He's one of my absolute favorite actors. And then when they did finally give him an Honorary one it was when they shuttled those ceremonies off the air. Such disrespect!

by Anonymousreply 12March 1, 2024 8:11 PM

Jim Carrey also should have been nominated for The Truman Show.

by Anonymousreply 13March 1, 2024 8:11 PM

They threw Zendaya in just because they don't want to deal with her fans pestering their staff on Twitter.

by Anonymousreply 14March 1, 2024 8:12 PM

Like everything else in life you have to be willing to "buy" one to get one. I think these awards are such a sham. The nominees have to butter up the judges along with gifts in order to win. It is not accomplished by merit alone.

by Anonymousreply 15March 1, 2024 8:13 PM

WTF would Zendaya have been nominated for???

by Anonymousreply 16March 1, 2024 8:15 PM

From the article—

[quote]Alongside a bombastic cast that includes Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Tom Wilkinson, Jim Carrey’s brain battles with his Oscar-nominated co-star Kate Winslet as Clementine Kruczynski (also giving her best performance as well).

What exactly does the author think "bombastic" means?

by Anonymousreply 17March 1, 2024 8:17 PM

R17 probably a millennial who also misuses "iconic."

by Anonymousreply 18March 1, 2024 8:25 PM

The list lost all credibility by putting Jennifer Lopez on it.

by Anonymousreply 19March 1, 2024 9:05 PM

R15 you can’t buy an Oscar. You would know this if you knew how many people vote for it. Cooper would have one by now babe.

by Anonymousreply 20March 1, 2024 9:21 PM

Robin Wright in Land was outstanding.

by Anonymousreply 21March 1, 2024 9:37 PM

Awkwafina? Heavens to Betsy.

Biggest takeaway from this piece was the reminder that Kurt Russell was an absolute smoke-show in Silkwood. I watched that movie as a young gayling and I still remember the unfamiliar tightening in the crotch of my stonewash Lee jeans when he showed a glimpse of pube.

by Anonymousreply 22March 2, 2024 2:28 AM

[quote] [R9] some movie stars are very good actors. Some movie stars aren’t. Gere was always good at what he did but not a versatile actor at all and definitely just a movie star carried by his charisma and charm and looks. He’s never gotten lost in a role.

Also not a prerequisite for an Oscar nomination -- George Clooney, Kevin Costner, John Travolta and Burt Reynolds have all been nominated and/or won. Gere is certainly in league with those men as an actor. He must have a poor reputation and/or be disliked by his peers.

by Anonymousreply 23March 2, 2024 2:43 AM

He never gave a performance worthy. Burt Reynolds was amazing in Boogie Nights. Tell me a Gere performance that was up there with that.

Costner was great.

by Anonymousreply 24March 2, 2024 2:49 AM

It’s unreal that Grant doesn’t have an Oscar. He has so memorable performances under his belt. This needs to be rectified.

by Anonymousreply 25March 2, 2024 2:53 AM

Peter Sarsgaard absolutely deserved a nom for “Shattered Glass.” Great performance, great film. Even Hayden Christensen couldn’t ruin it.

by Anonymousreply 26March 2, 2024 3:05 AM

Not even an honorable mention for Margo Channing’s star turn in “Aged in Wood”?

by Anonymousreply 27March 2, 2024 3:09 AM

Dawson in Dawson’s classic “50 Load Weekend, Part 1?”

by Anonymousreply 28March 2, 2024 3:17 AM

AGED IN WOOD was, of course, a play.

by Anonymousreply 29March 2, 2024 3:20 AM

It's shocking that Mia Farrow has never been nominated for an Oscar. Why she wasn't she nominated for Rosemary's Baby?

by Anonymousreply 30March 2, 2024 3:24 AM

The only ones of those that really shocked me were Donald Sutherland (who should have been nominated for "Don't Look Now" and "Ordinary People") and Alfred Molina (who should have been nominated for "Prick up your Ears" and "An Education"). Some of them are so young that it seems ridiculous to complain they don't have nominations yet. Zendaya and Awkwafina have tons of time to garner nominations, and also proper last names.

by Anonymousreply 31March 2, 2024 3:27 AM

The Oscars have really done Jim Carrey dirty. He should have been nominated for Eternal Sunshine(and possibly won) and for the Truman Show. I also think he should have gotten a nomination for The Mask. There's nobody in Hollywood who could do what he did in The Mask. He's brilliant, and the most gifted comedic actor of the last 50 years.

I once saw Richard Gere leaving a Buddhist temple in Manhattan while I was sitting in a taxi stuck in traffic.

by Anonymousreply 33March 2, 2024 3:34 AM

Billy Harrington in “9’5 Inches.”

What a loss.

by Anonymousreply 34March 2, 2024 3:35 AM

Why was Condi never nominated?

by Anonymousreply 35March 2, 2024 3:35 AM

Zendaya should have been nominated.

by Anonymousreply 36March 2, 2024 3:37 AM

Agree R2 Saw the Broadway production of Chicago twice; the film didn't deserve the Oscar nor did the performers. Gee was mediocre

by Anonymousreply 37March 2, 2024 3:41 AM

Mariah Carey in Precious

by Anonymousreply 38March 2, 2024 3:41 AM

Gere was mediocre (^.^) and Renee Zellweger was miscast

by Anonymousreply 39March 2, 2024 3:42 AM

[Quote] Zendaya and Awkwafina have tons of time to garner nominations, and also proper last names.

but I doubt they'll get the roles needed. WEHT Aqua Fina?

by Anonymousreply 40March 2, 2024 3:45 AM

Tony Curtis for "Sweet Smell of Success"

by Anonymousreply 41March 2, 2024 3:45 AM

Continuing with a current theme: Axel Garret!

For a straight guy, he can both suck cock and ride one like Nancy Reagan. That’s talent!

(And no pregnancy coercion!)

by Anonymousreply 42March 2, 2024 3:47 AM

Daniel Craig and Eva Green for Casino Royale. Genre bias.

by Anonymousreply 43March 2, 2024 4:09 AM

Eva Green has the worst agent in Hollywood. She should have the career that Rose Byrne does. She's an amazing talent.

by Anonymousreply 44March 2, 2024 4:14 AM

Jim Carrey was also good in Man on the Moon. He’s had some good roles.

by Anonymousreply 45March 2, 2024 4:26 AM

[quote]Daniel Craig and Eva Green for Casino Royale. Genre bias.

I think genre bias may also be what hurt JoBeth Williams' chances for a Best Actress nomination for "Poltergeist," which she very much deserved.

by Anonymousreply 46March 2, 2024 6:41 AM

[quote] I think genre bias may also be what hurt JoBeth Williams' chances for a Best Actress nomination for "Poltergeist," which she very much deserved.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Wait, you're serious?

by Anonymousreply 47March 2, 2024 7:26 AM

R44 are you slow? It’s not about agents. It’s about the public. They cast her in numerous projects a few years ago and everything she was in FLOPPED.

Comparing her to Rose Byrne is ridiculous when they’re nothing alike as far as acting AND looks go. You’re just saying anything.

by Anonymousreply 48March 2, 2024 7:36 AM

R44 must have missed her entire lawsuit. She won the lawsuit over her $1 million fee for a film that never got made. However, if you know how it works, Hollywood will never cast her again. She shot herself in the foot here.

Shut the fuck up, you bag of garbage. Everyone knows you sit at home generating 100 threads a day because you have no life. Anything you have to say is irrelevant and everyone on here loathes you. And I'm certain everyone off here loathes you, too.

by Anonymousreply 50March 2, 2024 7:53 AM

R50 lmaooooo ok jobless, uneducated loser who lives off his family still and has more redtagged accounts than anyone has ever. Please. You’re so fucking pathetic. And broke. And a liar.

by Anonymousreply 51March 2, 2024 7:56 AM

[quote]I also think he should have gotten a nomination for The Mask. There's nobody in Hollywood who could do what he did in The Mask. He's brilliant

R32 I remember when Siskel & Ebert did their annual "For Your Consideration..." Oscar episode on their program in early 1995, Ebert was really pushing for Cameron Diaz to get a Supporting Actress nomination for THE MASK.

I was like, "What about Jim Carrey?"

In 1994, Carrey not only had his breakthrough year but a banner year, as well.

ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE, THE MASK, and DUMB AND DUMBER were all smash hits, with the latter two among the Top 10 grossers of the year.

Usually, that much goodwill -- not to mention the praise he received for THE MASK -- guarantees someone a nomination, at least.

by Anonymousreply 52March 2, 2024 8:40 AM

Shitty list. Of the listed, the ones I think should have been nominated at some point are Sutherland and Ewan Mcgregor. And yes, though I don’t like him, Careyfor Eternal

Not on the list Mia Farrow (Rosemary, Husbands an Wives, Hannah) , Daniel Craig and was going to say Kisten Dunst but that was corrected recently (she should have been nominated and won for Melancholia).

by Anonymousreply 53March 2, 2024 8:51 AM

[quote]Anyone bleating out the word "woke" will be publicly buggywhipped in the town square.

Don't threaten me with a good time!

by Anonymousreply 54March 2, 2024 9:18 AM

Mia Farrow not being nominated for “Rosemary’s Baby” was a travesty.

by Anonymousreply 55March 2, 2024 10:29 AM

Jim Carrey and Steve Carell in comic roles? Often wonderful.

Jim Carrey and Steve Carell as serious actors? Lord. Their ACTING click-click-clicks a thousand times more than Mary Louise Streep's ever does.

by Anonymousreply 56March 2, 2024 2:24 PM

Ahem.

by Anonymousreply 57March 2, 2024 2:52 PM

2025 is the year for our girls Zendaya and Sydney.

by Anonymousreply 58May 9, 2024 3:59 PM

James McAvoy should have been nominated and won for Best Actor in Split.

by Anonymousreply 59May 9, 2024 4:14 PM

I think Michael Stuhlbarg should have gotten a nomination for A Serious Man. The problem with these lists is that they're too long. If you making a list of 50 Greatest Whatever then at least 30 of the actor/movies/things are just there to fill out the list. Are we seriously going to pretend that Liev Schreiber was cheated out of a nomination for playing a side character in some PoS remake that everyone has forgotten about? There are tons of dumb choices on that list.

by Anonymousreply 60May 10, 2024 3:11 AM

Judy Parfitt and Kathy Bates should have both been nominated for Dolores Claiborne!

by Anonymousreply 61May 10, 2024 11:05 AM

R61 sure, but Kathy Bates has an Oscar. She doesn’t fit into this article.

by Anonymousreply 62May 10, 2024 11:48 AM

Zendaya No Last Name will be (undeservedly) nominated sooner or later.

by Anonymousreply 63May 12, 2024 10:25 AM

[quote]Wait, you're serious?

Those were real skeletons in the pool, R47. REAL SKELETONS!

by Anonymousreply 64May 12, 2024 10:49 AM

Even though she won the lawsuit, Eva Green sounds like a challenging person, a Karen in the movie industry, from the descriptions in the article posted by R49.

by Anonymousreply 65May 12, 2024 11:56 AM

Eva Green was great in the Penny Dreadful series. She's a talented actor.

by Anonymousreply 66May 12, 2024 12:38 PM

Why should Hugh Grant have an Oscar? He plays the same character in every movie, which is just an extension of his real personality.

by Anonymousreply 67May 12, 2024 1:29 PM

[quote]Why should Hugh Grant have an Oscar? He plays the same character in every movie, which is just an extension of his real personality.

I won FOUR lead Oscars doing the same thing.

by Anonymousreply 69May 12, 2024 3:08 PM

[quote] Mia Farrow not being nominated for “Rosemary’s Baby” was a travesty.

She was totally deserving of a nomination, but 1968 was a very strong year, and I wonder, R55 , who would you omit from the actual list: K Hepburn (A Lion in Winter), Neal (The Subject Was Roses), V Redgrave (Isadora), Streisand (funny Girl) or Woodward (Rachel, Rachel)?

by Anonymousreply 70May 12, 2024 3:21 PM

[quote]I won FOUR lead Oscars doing the same thing. —K. Hepburn

One of which you stole from Barbra Streisand.

Tie my ass! It should have been solely Barbra’s moment.

by Anonymousreply 71May 12, 2024 3:27 PM

[quote]K Hepburn (A Lion in Winter), Neal (The Subject Was Roses), V Redgrave (Isadora), Streisand (funny Girl) or Woodward (Rachel, Rachel)?

What would have happened if antisemitic Redgrave and Streisand had tied?

If Redgrave had made her speech about Jewish hoodlums, would Barbara have clocked her upside the head?

by Anonymousreply 72May 12, 2024 3:31 PM

Zendaya? what the actual fuck?

by Anonymousreply 73May 12, 2024 3:39 PM

Can you imagine how insufferable Jennifer Lopez would be if she had gotten an Oscar nomination for Selena?

No, I don't think she should ahve been nominated. It was a decent performance, but nothing special.

by Anonymousreply 74May 12, 2024 3:46 PM

Hugh Grant should have been nominated for Bridget Jones.

by Anonymousreply 75May 12, 2024 4:03 PM

Zendaya Jones only has one facial expression.😐

Bored + pissed off + fart face.

by Anonymousreply 76May 12, 2024 4:07 PM

r44, she is. She went full in on, "Penny Dreadful" and nobody noticed because it was a genre series. The excellent Rory Kinnear was in it too, in horrible makeup.

by Anonymousreply 77May 12, 2024 5:43 PM

What is Zendaya supposed to have been nominated for? Services to fashion?

by Anonymousreply 78May 12, 2024 6:06 PM

Toni Collette should have won for Hereditary.

by Anonymousreply 79May 12, 2024 6:34 PM

R79 = Zoomer

by Anonymousreply 80May 12, 2024 7:17 PM

R78, she deserves a Razzie for that.

by Anonymousreply 81May 12, 2024 7:18 PM

She shouldn’t have even been nominated (which she wasn’t) r79. Terrible movie. The son was miscast. Her overacting was comical.

by Anonymousreply 82May 12, 2024 7:25 PM

I think Hereditary is nothing without it's gruesome shock value decapitation scene.
