So, I was really late to the party and only watched Red White and Royal Blue like a month ago and I thought their chemistry was fine, they were believable enough but god am I too used to that chemistry being explosive both on and off screen.

R8 I was 592 and you're right, that has to be it. It's sometimes a big blur to me because other authors have probably borrowed from its tropes/style, to the point where it's a chicken and egg situation of which came first.

I do appreciate the author recently defending that fans shouldn't make Charlie's mental health journey about Nick. But the Hinge AU was probably my first brush with realizing I'm not really equipped for a focus on Charlie's mental health to that degree. Like, very dense in both length and subject matter but definitely a YMMV thing.

The thing is if they managed that actually kinda sweet sex scene with two actors that barely tolerate each other, I would need a year to myself if Heartstopper was for an older audience and Joe and Kit with their better chemistry and acting did the scene like that.

They have Charlie functionally sexually assault him by pressuring him into sex, literally classify Charlie as an abuser by name in the fic, and have Charlie giving him PTSD and triggering a bipolar diagnosis with a suicide attempt. It has to be one of the most irresponsible pieces of writing I’ve ever seen

R24 yeah, I think my point is for all I shade Alice and I DO think she mishandled parts of it (I’ll be livid if there’s not an episode about Charlie in inpatient), she was really good about never graphically showing or describing Charlie’s self harm or eating disorder. We just hear he self harms and him describing not eating. She chooses to show healed scars and Charlie only gets shirtless when he’s emotionally and physically healed. I think that’s well handled and after the 13 reasons why controversy they won’t make it more graphic.

I used to have the same issue as Charlie in high school, the way I ate or lack there of was about control and I still think about it now but although everyone is different I’m not 10 years down the line purging or having anxiety attacks left right and centre like in FanFiction.

Alice actually does not a bad job of it but she could hopefully dig deeper a little just for some more of an impact and omft for Joe to play with.

We know Joe and Kit are very close friends who enjoy spending time together even when not working. We also know they have great chemistry on screen. The fact that they have kissed so many times in a professional setting actually makes the likelihood of them dating way less for me. Because they’ve actively had to build up walls and compartmentalize their relationship. Maybe in 5-10 years they’ll randomly get together. But I see zero chance of them getting together before HS ends. For lots of reasons both professional and emotional.

And comphet sometimes means crushing on your friends of the opposite gender. I know there are leaks of them holding hands as they run up the slide at the carnival but I could also just see them reconnecting their old friendship after years apart.

R581 Definitely an apt comparison. Setting aside my current contempt for JKR, Harry Potter fandom was formative in a lot of ways for all fandoms. For better or for worse. It's pretty typical for there to be adult fans of media ft. teenage characters (or pre-teens in the early years of HP and PJO). Heartstopper is a very unique case where a lot of adult fans are drawn to it because they simply didn't have anything like it when they were teens. Adult fans aren't inherently creepy, so I do eye-roll when people go to that extreme.

And on the flipside, I know some actual kids in the age range of the PJO actors caught strays for talking about their crushes on them and whatever. There just aren't really curated communities anymore, Twitter is such a melting pot where you could be reading takes from any and all ages.
