I believe that Tim Scott has the advantage because Trump is a vindictive person and has a grudge to settle with Nikki Haley.
Tim Scott plays into this because Haley was the Governor who appointed Scott when he took over for retiring Jim DeMint.

There are certainly a number of Vile, Vicious, and Vociferous candidates for Trump to choose from for V.P. But go all his dramatic posturing I don't really think Trump WANTS to choose a candidate that has any Cajones. (Like Lake or DeSantis). Trump's Ego couldn't take it to be paired alongside someone who might actually have a backbone, or God forbid outshine him.
Naw- he wants a proverbial Yes-man. Therefore Scott will serve perfectly as his butt boy.

It can't be Melania Trump. She's not a natural-born citizen, and is thus ineligible to be president or vice president.
It can't be Ron DeSantis, Byron Donalds, Rick Scott, Anna Paulina Luna, or anyone else from Florida. The Twelfth Amendment forbids a president and vice president who are legal residents of the same state from being elected to those offices. Trump is legally a Florida resident, as are the others here.
It won't be Kari Lake. She's too crazy even for Trump, and they've already spent a mint setting her up to contest a purple state senate race.
It won't be MTG or Vivek. Trump loves loyalty, but he HATES shitheads who use him to advance their own personalities. And he sees right through these two.
It won't be Katie Britt, Elise Stefanik, or Kim Reynolds. They're solid politicians in their own right, who got elected without his help, and he sees them as creatures of the swamp.
It'll be Kristi Noem. She's hot (for a politician), which Trump loves. She's a bit of a slut, which Trump also loves. And she's stupid enough and desperate enough to do ANYTHING he wants.

Trump's VP is more like a valet. I don't think his white nationalist base would object to Trump having a smiling Black servant. Also, after the uppity Obamas, having an Uncle Tom shuffling around the White House is just the salve the white masses need to calm their fears.

The more I think about this, the more I think he will choose whomever will best pander to Evangelicals. That will transcend all other qualities for Trump. I cannot see him choosing a black man, he is that racist. But a woman, who is white? I think he will jump at that.
Try to remember, when he ran the first time, he did all kinds of things to “show” he liked black people. He did several stunts to “prove” he wasn’t anti-gay (didn’t he even hold up the Pride flag in an early presser after he was elected)? He will pull all kinds of stunts to try and win over those blocks, but I do NOT believe he will share a ticket with any POC, though I woman is possible. I think he would like the sexiness of a female on the ticket. I also agree, only attractive females need apply, which automatically eliminates Huckabeast. By sheer elimination and running it through my Trump-o-matic filter, I land first on Noem, Tulsi, and my dark horse choice is Kari Lake.

I have been saying it’s likely going to be Scott for months. He makes far too much sense for it not to be him.. Very Conservative but not a wacko MAGA Christian to an extreme but he sounds nothing like a Mike Johnson.. in fact he sounds nice which makes him the anti-Mike Johnson.
Scott scares me because I think he is the one that could pull some votes away from Biden that trump might never normally see. And the this is going to be a close election.
If you disagree do so with naming someone you think will bring in more v
otes for trump. Despite still thinking it will be Scott I am hoping it will be a strong MAGA type, maybe a MAGA woman already on the record of behind hard against abortion, or Vivek. And all the many articles out there over the past 6-10 months talking about Biden losing significant support among blacks may not translate to “swathes” but then again how many can Joe afford to lose?
Racist who constantly make fun of how a black man looks or talk about blacks and cotton fields may not understand this but Scott will appeal to a lot of Americans. Those that lean right and left.
People want to make light of that or make fun of that I hope are not Biden advisors.
Scott would be the absolutely last person the Dem advisors will want to see on the ticket (Haley already out of the running)

The reason why Sarah Huckabee Sanders is a good choice in his eyes is because she serves. When she worked for him he was the boss and she did what he said. She also gave him good advice. I think he is looking for someone he is comfortable with. Someone who won't upstage him, who will support him and do what he wants. She checks all those boxes...and she won't upstage Melania by being too pretty or fashionable. And just keep in mind that anyone can get a make over. They'll hire a wardrobe consultant for her and she can get her hair done and she will look presentable.

A Quick Look at the polls today, and as of today it looks like it could be another close election in the electoral college. No one is running away with this. I wonder how few votes it would take in one or two states at most for it to mean a Trump win vs a Biden win.
A VP that brings a few votes with them could be a major difference maker in 2024. A VP that does not appeal to true independents and moderates is a wasted choice for VP.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | February 23, 2024 6:54 PM |
R77, I seem to remember reading that the electoral college would have gone the other way in 2020 if somewhere around 80,000 voters, spread across three swing states, had voted differently.
Off the top of my head, I think the victory margin for Biden in Michigan was around 10,000 votes, for example. In Georgia we know, famously, that all Trump needed was 11,000 votes to be found. I think the third state was Pennsylvania.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | February 23, 2024 7:01 PM |
If Sanders had lost weight, she'd be in the mix. Not enough time for that now. And I'm not saying that to be a bitchy queen. Mr. Cheeseburger Diet that lies about his weight would never pick a fat woman for VP no matter how qualified or loyal.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | February 23, 2024 7:02 PM |
And to add, R77, I agree that the smart move would be to pick someone from a purple state who’s somewhat levelheaded.
I doubt this will happen however, since Trump regularly makes choices based on emotion or self-interest rather than strategy or even common sense.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | February 23, 2024 7:05 PM |

I said it in another thread a long time ago, but his smartest choice would be to call up Condoleeza Rice and beg her to be his running mate. Checks a number of diversity boxes. Has no recent baggage from the primaries. No question she's qualified (in terms of background, not talking her politics). Connected to the relatively more moderate, establishment wing of the GOP that Trump has pissed off. Has a nice, short last name that works well on signs. And it's obvious from the Bush years that she has no problem not upstaging anyone. But Trump doesn't think smart like that.

Elise Stefanik voted against the bill guaranteeing right to contraceptives, so tough luck with a large majority of the women and still a majority of men, albeit smaller. Also Trump wants to be seen in company of gorgeous women, always, hence miss USA and the only reason he's jettisoned his ex-wives is because they lost their look. He's only keeping Melania because of all the maintenance she's going through to not look like an old lady and she's very pliable, like all prostitutes. Trump would never want to be seen choosing homely Miss Potato Head as his VP no matter how sickeningly sycophant she can be. Also she's the one who made George Santos, all by hersef. She could be a great speaker though and would trample all over the last shreds of democracy with her hefty presence. I hope this one ends up in prison, where she belongs because she has the brain to understand the consequences that a second Trump presidency would have on the country, unlike Boebert (who is toast anyway) and MTG whose brains are just barely reptilian.

As a POC, I'm offended by many of the posts on this thread. To think that Black people will vote for Trump simply because he has a Black man on the ticket is very offensive. I suppose you are the same people who believe that Trump will capture the Black youth vote because they just LOVE sneakers!
Besides being disgusted by the image posted by the OP, I believe that this is one of the biggest setups that we will ever see. Does anyone recall how Trump set Romney up for embarrassment? The same thing is happening here, IMHO. Scott will be strung along, and those "so called" conservatives of color will work HARD and very publicly for the ticket. Then Trump will pull the rug out from under all of them, and the embarrassment will be deep.
The only way that Scott hits this ticket is with his total misunderstanding of what his role will surely be. This, of course, works to Trump's benefit. Scott will be looked upon and thought of nothing more than a Rochester. This would be Trump's slap to the faces of President Barak and Michelle Obama, along with those who supported them.

yeah, not sure I believe he's "poised" to win between "14% and 30%" of the black vote. It's almost like it's a half-assed poll that has pretty much no idea what will happen.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | February 23, 2024 11:59 PM |
I don't think it's offensive to say that he'd likely get SOME more of the black vote if he went with a black running mate. It's possible this is going to be a very close election and even a small % change could make the difference. I don't think anyone is suggesting, other than that sneakers idiot, that black people in general would rush to vote for him. But Scott? I just don't see it.

Trump doesn't respect Scott, nor does he get anything useful out of him.
His favorite type of trophy is the hide of a vanquished foe. Someone who publicly fought him, gave it their all, and then crumbled into an utter kiss-ass at his feet.
His least favorite type of trophy is the airhead who sucks up to Trump, Inc. because he or she has nothing of their own to offer America.

Don't believe that R101. Black folk just won't vote (which could be argued as helping Trump) but they're not going to proactively go to the polls and pull the Trump lever. That's NOT gonna happen. I've posted this earlier on in some DL thread, but Trump wasn't anything new to POC. Black folk have seen his ilk before (and many like him). I tell ya... I'll never forget meeting and speaking with 5 men (who happened to be Black) that made it a life-or-death conviction to register to vote AND vote! They had never voted in their lives and what was consistent among all of them is that they saw Trump for what he is, and they knew what was coming.
Also, R100, I'm getting very tired (and I'm not blaming you) for these "paid for" propaganda pieces

[quote]I don't think it's offensive to say that he'd likely get SOME more of the black vote if he went with a black running mate.
It most certainly is.
Let's take just one item (out of many) of why the Black race want nothing to do with Scott. It was his opposition to police and prison reform, and thus killing that piece of legislation, is enough to dismiss him.

I had the misfortune of speaking with two local black men (different times, different places) who [bold]LOVE LOVE LOVE[/bold] Donald Trump. They were so vehement (just like the white deplorables) it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
In fact, now that I think about it, a black man in my motorcycle association, originally from Jamaica, also loves Donald Trump. His newly wedded (Puerto Rican) bride staunchly agreed with him.
Anecdotal, I know -- but they're out there.

They are out there, R109. I do agree with you on that. The very few Black men that I know of who were publicly for Trump were those who were attracted to him because of his "so-called" wealth and the women he attracted. None of them could tell you about Trump policies. Their attraction was simply because of his wealth and how they perceived his lifestyle.

That thing has been figured out across the continuum of race, sexuality, space and time.
A Black VP for Trump solves the superficial image problem Trump and the Repubs have as racists. I hope he does NOT pick Scott for that reason. A smiling c00n could dampen the urgency of the Dem electorate and thwart its plans to drive voter turnout.

Now. As for the Huckabeast, I can see Trump wanting her. She is someone he knows and is comfortable with. He trusts her. She did a good job for him. But then reality hits. Who the fuck is going to vote for her? What does she bring to the ticket, besides her history with Trump? What's her constituency? She doesn't add anything to the ticket. OK. Maybe he won't pick RUbio. But if they could find some Latino, Evangelical sympathizer he'd go for it. I just believe Trump is feeling beleaguered and wants the comfort of a know entity.

R99 I do hope you watched 'The Weekend' on MSNBC this morning with Symone and Michael Steele discussing this with a black political commentator (I apologize - I didn't catch his name). Trump and his people plan on stealing this election. They will do what they did in 2016. Only this time he has red states passing laws to make it easier. But the basic plan is to make sure he "wins" electoral votes. So he is looking at Michigan and a few other states. He will regain the White House unless we support the groups who are litigating election laws. Guys like Mark Elias and his group. And he will regain the WH unless we have an overwhelming turnout. IF we don't show up, he will get away with everything, and make this his own personal hellscape.

Funny you should mention a vetting process, (if there is one.) R158. If there had been a real vetting process...by the media back in 2015 and 2016, Trump would have never got near the WH. But the media deliberately overlooked all the filth that was available about him. Instead focusing for 600 straight days, on "E-mails!" Allowing Rudy Giuliani, whom they already knew was in Trump's pocket, to convince them that Hillary was going to be arrested any minute. Rudy's former colleagues from the local NYC FBI office and the U.S. attorney's office, retirees with bank accounts eagerly corroborated the rumors. and Shiny Object Journalism finally had what passes for glory days. I will safely bet there will be no vetting process.None. Just as there is no real investigation, no examination of the phenomena or immigrant caravans organized by Evangelicals with rubles in their pockets.

Progressives and leftists definitely opposed the Iraq War. The people who didn't were Democratic Senators and other politicians who were terrified that in the face of the all the 9/11 emotions they would be seen as disloyal for opposing Bush's adventures in the Middle East. That was a bad moment, and they were cowards, including Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden and John Kerry. Yes I know there is some fraudulent wiggle room about whether they were just giving Bush the "option" but you would have to be a complete moron not to know where all that was heading.
But the leftists outside of Democratic officialdom were definitely opposed to that war and were very vocal about it.
I do still think we are right to help Ukraine against Russia's landgrab, but I do acknowledge a number of leftists have been consistent in opposing both wars.
by Anonymous | reply 184 | February 27, 2024 11:43 PM |
R184, why is opposing both the Iraq War and assistance to Ukraine a matter of "consistency"? A knee-jerk pacifism doesn't have much to recommend it. An opposition to imperial, plutocratic invasions by any power, whether US or Russia, has a deeper and more thoughtful consistency.
by Anonymous | reply 185 | February 27, 2024 11:48 PM |

It's really very simple. Putin seeks the same two goals as Trump: Glory and Revenge. In Putin's case:
1. Restore the glory and pride of a unified Soviet empire, complete with Ukraine, the Baltic states, etc.
2. Conquer Germany.

You guys. Rachel MAddow wrote an excellent book called Blowout about how everything is tied to minerals and energy. Russia is teetering on the brink of being a failed state. Their economy is very weak. Putin and his coterie of Oligarchs control everything. But it is also being depleted. That's why he is branching out into Africa now and has been in the Middle East since the late 60's. It's why he invaded Afghanistan. Oil, gas, minerals are how he and his buddies became billionaires. For many many decades the Ukraine was the bread basket, the wealthiest region. It fed Europe. It is still prosperous.. And Putin wants it back. We have to understand that Putin runs the show like he is the Tsar and the working stiffs are his serfs. He has no desire to build a stable nation. He is totally in it for himself. And he has a large group of oligarchs he has made wealthy, who act on his behalf. Sometimes someone falls out a window or gets fatal indigestion. But they are all loyal. Putin encroaching on our NATO allies, and moving against other European nations is definitely his plan. He wants to destroy NATO and he can't do it unless he weakens the United States. So he has bought off politicians, and media types, and he has set up his troll factories and disinformation operations and he is implementing his agenda. And we are helping him. MAGAs Proud Boys, and lots of stupid people who inadvertently get manipulated to act in his interests without ever realizing it.

We've managed to destroy nearly 50% of Russia's military might without a single one of our soldiers dying and for a pittance equivalent to something like 5% of our military budget.
You idiots realize that we're basically sending them our hand-me-downs and things that were about to expire, right? And that over half the money "spent on Ukraine" stays right here in the U.S., creating jobs here, right?
Or are you all so fucking stupid you think we're just madly printing palettes of cash and shipping them to Ukraine for them to burn for warmth? Fucking morons.
I have ZERO respect for anyone objecting to supporting, funding, and supplying Ukraine in this situation.

r178 What about 65 years of American failed military adventures don't you understand?
Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan - we always lose. Vietnam is the biggest farce of them all. Our government killed 50,000 of our own and hundred of thousands of Vietnamese, for what? So both Trump and Biden could stay at the Hanoi Hilton making trade deals with those "evil commies" who we could "never" let run Vietnam?
Russia is no threat to us. VP Biden was in Kyiv in 2010 and 2013 stirring shit in Ukraine. Russia held back not invading until 2022. We completely provoked that Russian invasion of Ukraine. If not for U.S. meddling there would never have been a war.

So who are suburban women most likely to like as a VP? I don't think it's uber-anti abortion Scott who comes across as inauthentic (it's a running joke that he has only got a girlfriend now). I think a more female-friendly woman like Noem or Stefanik would be more palatable.

I don't think that Noem would ever get it. Yes, she has the attractiveness that would matter to Trump, but her risk is that she would overshadow Trump (like Palin did with John McCain) and that is something that would be completely unacceptable. Stefanik "could" possibly be a choice except would her skin be thick enough to take the onslaught of insults by Trump about her looks.

I kind of hope that Trump is stupid enough to pick Scott as VP. There isn't a lot of evidence that the VP pick matters at all much but I think that Palin did lessen McCain in voters' minds.. I would feel a lot better about Biden's chances if Scott was the VP compared to someone like Noem.

I don't think Stefanik has a snowball's chance in hell of being his VP. If he chooses a woman it will be someone who is nearly invisible not outspoken, or it will be someone he is very comfortable with and trusts, like the Huckabeast. I was surprised to discover via a special report from NPR some years ago, that Latinos were turning to the Evangelical churches, especially in places like Texas I had always assumed 98% of Latinos were Catholics. This is no longer true. Today it looks more like 48%. And the Evangelicals claim nearly 20% of Latinos. Now what is significant about this is that they influence other non evangelicals and so there's a spin off effect.

Trump, more than anything, wants money. And he wants the PResidency so he can shield himself from prosecution. That is all he cares about. He will let the lunatics and the extremists take over if he can satisfy those two concerns. So his choice for VP is going to be motivated by those two things. Who can generate money and who can help propel him into the White House. So as the official Broken Record on this thread I will say it again. Haley, Haley, Haley. Now. Haley will do a cost benefit analysis. If she gets herself on the ticket, will it hurt her or harm her in the future?

Please remove Katie Britt from this list. Than you.

That does make sense, r316, but I think he's just so easily overwhelmed by his stupid emotions and stupid grievances. I suspect he just won't be able to overcome the "betrayal" of daring to run against him and not dropping out when he ordered her to. I do think he'll pick a woman, but I suspect it'll be some dutiful little acolyte. And in his addled mind, women voters just want to see a woman and won't much care which one.
But I guess we'll see soon enough.

Haley can do more campaigning for him. She has the stamina he lacks. Personally I pray she refuses to be on his ticket. She will never endorse Biden. If I were advising her, I would tell her to endorse Trump, and do a few campaign appearances for him and call it even. She will keep her standing within the party for the future. I would not encourage her to be on his ticket, unless I saw a clear path to the Presidency.

I don’t see Haley ever being with Trump. She really trashed him and got under his skin,
Tim Scott fills the role of sycophantic bootlicker to a T.
by Anonymous | reply 320 | March 8, 2024 2:42 PM |
Stating that selecting Tim Scott will win Trump all the black votes is like stating that selecting Tim Scott or Lindseybelle will win Trump all the gay votes: this is ludicrous. It doesn't work that way.

Lindzebelle wouldn’t let Herschel Walker get any sleep when he was running for a senate seat from Georgia. She was with him night and day. She doesn’t get anyone votes other than their opponents.

Madison Cawthorn still shows for the Mar-a-Lago parties and some Trump campaign events.
I can’t see him getting elected to Congress again. Maybe he just likes upscale MAGA parties and Trump is very accepting of him.

It has to be a white male total asslicking syncophant. There. Now make your selections.
J.D Vance would be a possibility if he wasn't have him on tape disparaging Turd over and over years ago. I guess they could blame it on AI trickery.

R321
Are you a troll? No one absolutely no one has ever said that Scott would win “all” the blacks vote for Trump. That is not even good trolling or lying or humor.
“Some ‘ black votes would be more honest and less troll like. But to say as some have that it will result in “no” additional black votes for Trump is equally stupid.
This election could turn into a good old ass kicking beat down.. But if it is close every vote will be important.

Trump may view JD Vance and Josh Hawley as too ambitious.
by Anonymous | reply 326 | March 8, 2024 3:09 PM |
No—it will be someone who has the implied blessing of the Republican $ people who have held back so far. He will need huge amounts of cash to advertise—it’s a weak spot for now. It won’t be Haley, of course, but the person has to be palatable to those who were funding that sort of candidate. Someone who can pass their test AND the Trump test….thats more like Noem or similar.

A Secretary of Transportation in Trump 2.0.

Always ask what would they bring to the campaign? Now, J.D. Vance would not be a bad idea because Ohio is important. However, many polls indicate people in Ohio do not like that fucking phony. But the other thing is, I think Sherrod Brown is running for re-election in Ohio, and putting Vance on the ticket might help defeat Brown.
by Anonymous | reply 329 | March 8, 2024 4:20 PM |
Vance is useless. Trump will not lose Ohio in any scenario.

“The sad part of it is, Mitch McConnell knows full well that the president was guilty of a crime on Jan. 6. So for him to know how bad the president’s predecessor was on all of this, and then come to the conclusion that he would endorse him when we thought he was going to convict him — the word was, he was close to conviction, and now he’s endorsing — it’s really very, very sad.”
by Anonymous | reply 334 | March 8, 2024 5:45 PM |
Mitch is retreating into the one position he can support; he supports Republican power in fucking up the process.
He doesn't care that Trump is a criminal.
He doesn't care what the states do after the reversal of roe.
He just fucks up the process.

Lara Trump co-chair of the RNC and handling the finances. Geez, what could go wrong there?
This will end up being a criminal investigation with very angry donors.
Oh wait, if its a criminal investigation, Merrick Garland will sit on it.

R339 Lady Lindsey is an old lush. Trump hates drunks, like his older brother Fred.
by Anonymous | reply 341 | March 9, 2024 12:34 AM |
Fred was a drunk because he understood he was a man with a soul in a family of soulless, blood sucking vulture capitalists.
It is the reason their dad moved on to sociopath Donnie. It is a pity Fred Jr was driven to drink.
