An unintentional horror movie and total campy Frau fest. The based-on-a true story film depicts the escape of American citizen Betty Mahmoody (Sally Field) and her daughter from her abusive husband (Alfred Molina) in Iran, after he tricks her into visiting his family and takes her passport.
Hey! I always liked it.
So there.

Love this movie! I’m gonna watch it again.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 20, 2024 2:18 AM |
Tell us how campy it was, OP. The title alone put me off.
And that kid in the poster is almost as big as Sally, it's about time she learned to walk.

R1 no shame. It’s a fabulous movie. It’s just campy.

From this movie always intrigued to me because when I was 7 we lived in an apartment building on the second floor of a two story building. The unit next to us so it's a mother and her two sons and I overheard my mom talking to somebody about her situation. It turned out she had made an irony and he was the father of her two boys and she kept very strict eye on them because he was worried about him kidnapped them and taking them out of the country. As a result we rarely ever saw them outside of their apartment they certainly weren't allowed to play with any of the other kids and there were four of us that were all about the same age. As far as the movie my favorite scene is when she tries to appeal to the hearts of the female family members and they all start screeching at her like wild monkeys.

I preferred Terrance and Phillip in Not Without My Anus.

It inspired the TV-movie on "Schitt's Creek" that Moira Rose once starred in alongside Joyce DeWitt: "Not Without My Cousin."
MOIRA (after watching a re-run of it on cable): "I have to hand it to DeWitt. She had a real breakthrough during the denouement. I believed [italic]she[/italic] believed we were cousins."

I told you guys many, years ago when I was a little kid and this movie came out I would wrap a towel or pillowcase around my cat's head, and run her through the house screaming NOT WITHOUT MY DAUGHTER!!!! So I guess I was Sally Field.
My cat's name was Snuggles.
Snuggles Mahmoody.

R10, I bet your parents had no idea you were a homosexual.
Was it a rescue cat?

I went to school with a girl who escaped from Iran, and even her family laughed at how OTT the movie is.
It’s a classic of the genre though.

This movie reminded me again that abortion is important.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 20, 2024 2:42 AM |
This movie always pissed me off. What the hell did she think would happen traveling to Iran after the hostage crisis and knowing how women were treated? No sympathy.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 20, 2024 2:44 AM |
R12 I think he meant "She met an Iranian" . If you read it that way, that babble makes sense - The Iranian father was going to kidnap the kids and take them to Iran.
At least, that's what I understood.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 20, 2024 2:52 AM |
R16 yes that's exactly what I meant sorry about that.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 20, 2024 2:54 AM |
Sally always loved the movies where she turned out to be the hero. An inferiority complex ? Hummmmmm...

Was Alfred Molina an all-purpose ethnic?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 20, 2024 3:20 AM |
I’ve heard of but never seen and much watch this. I wonder if Sally’s character spoke with a Southern U.S. accent in this film? Her characters always seem to, in all her films. Because she always appears to be playing the same Sally Field in each of them, actually.

One of the most beloved ESTs of all time on Datalounge was called "Not Without My Daughter." It involved a gay father who had an overweight daughter whom he suspected had stolen a can of frosting from him.

It’s being remade. “Not Without My Non-Binary Offspring” will star Tori Spelling as a woke mother of one who rescues them from her husband’s nightmarish MAGAT hometown in Southern Louisiana.

R29 she was 44 when the movie was made.

Sally Field is at her best when she’s delivering a manic breakdown. M’lynn at the funeral, Norma Rae getting stuffed into a police cruiser, Abby’s mom getting handcuffed to a hospital bed on ER, Miranda realizing that Mrs. Doubtfire is actually her ex-husband. It’s the same exact performance every time, but it’s always compelling.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 20, 2024 4:58 AM |
What am I saying? Of course you're right! It WAS called "Not Without My Frosting"!
Sorry, r46--you were right, and I was wrong not just once, but twice!
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 20, 2024 5:01 AM |
I agree with Pauline Kael's assessment that Sally is a one-emotion-at-a-time dramatic actress. She's better at comedy.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 20, 2024 10:15 AM |
OTT yes but it doesn't rise to the level of camp
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 21, 2024 1:04 AM |
I agree with R27, Eye For an Eye is good — reminded me of the Sally Struthers nail biter, A Gun In the House.

Did Mop Top ever see her father again after they escaped Iran and made it back to the states?
Eye For An Eye is high camp and incredibly hilarious! The Macarena scene, the villain pouring hot coffee on a stray dog just to prove how evil he truly was, etc...

Her mother was an actress and her stepfather was a stuntman.

Sadly, the daughter chose not to title her own book "Not Without My Mama."
by Anonymous | reply 76 | July 7, 2024 3:23 AM |
I read the book on which the film is based, and I was always shocked at Betty Mahmoody's stupidity. Her husband was paranoid, controlling, abusive and unwilling to get a job so, while their marriage was collapsing and he'd become almost psychotic after she threatened to divorce him, she decided that travelling with him to a fundamentalist Islamic theocracy where women have few rights, was the right way to repair their relationship. And then, she was shocked when he turned around and decided to kidnap her and use their daughter as a means to control her.
He was a piece of shit, but she is an utter and complete idiot. As for Alfred Molina, he hasn't really played that many so-called "ethnic" roles. If you have a look at his filmography, he's mostly played white English characters throughout his career.

I don't know what ethnicity Rahad Jackson was in "Boogie Nights," but Molina deserved an Oscar.

Alfred Molina received Oscar buzz and a BAFTA nod for playing Mexican Diego Rivera in Julie Taymor's FRIDA (2002) which garnered Salma Hayek an Oscar nomination.
