If you like horror films- Holy shit. Speak No Evil-
This is one of the most frightening films that I have ever seen.
I am an Ari Ester fan, and it is probably more disturbing than Hereditary and Midsommer.
I watched it a year ago, and then again today- and it was more disturbing on a second viewing.
The script is very cruel once you know what happens-
One of the very few horror films that is more horrifying on the 2nd viewing.
I do not know how these actors did it- in this film particularly-
Amazing film-

It reminds me of The Vanishing. Once you get to the end, you have to watch it again.
I wonder if they'll fuck up the American remake.

R2- Other than Hereditary- I have never found a film scarier and more disturbing on a second viewing.
What floored me are various lines throughout the film that were really vicious when you know what ultimately happens...
My heart was racing later in the film like I had never seen it before.
These were very brave actors.
The Vanishing (original) is an absolutely perfect comparison.
American Remake- Fuck. What? I think I had heard this awhile back and clearly blocked it out.

I looked up the remake. It is coming from Blumhouse. The three leads are James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy and the director is responsible for one of the most horrifying movies I've seen called Eden Lake. If you haven't seen Eden Lake, r1, you really should. It is essentially Deliverance in England...but without the anal rape. It's also one of Michael Fassbender's first films. So, the remake is going to be in good hands.

R4- I just checked this out- I DID see Eden Lake and it was very effective (Its 15 years old and was pretty hardcore for its time)
He also directed The Descent Part 2- and while not as good as the original, was pretty damn great. (Its issues were more script/plot related)
and I do like James Mcavoy-
In this case anyway, Blumhouse is another good sign-

R6- No- Because those Halloween threads were pretty popular. This place is odd sometimes!
Hey- you know what I just noticed--- They do not have an actress listed as the "wife"--
I dont want to give away spoilers...
As you know there were 2 women... Its weird... I wonder if they are changing it to do two gay men, or a single man, or IMDB just has not listed it... Kind of interesting.
For me- they should not change a fucking thing. The original is near perfect.

r13, it's an English language remake.
r9, it's on Shudder right now. Don't know about a Blu-Ray.
OP, Yeah, I don't see a wife. I hope they don't make them a gay couple for obvious reasons. Maybe they're hiding stunt casting?
r16, This movie has zero moments of supernatural horror. It is slow burn horror.

Okay good R17, cause I can't do the floating people bullshit of hereditary, not to mention the incredibly unattractive little girl who looked nothing like the brother or parents, but I digress.

I’m a supernatural horror fan but loved SNE. I’m sure the remake is going to stink like our version of Martyrs.
Americans love crappy happy endings and can’t stand to see the kiddies hurt, so this too will suck
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 19, 2024 9:15 PM

Yes! I loved Martyrs, the French one, is there a remake? That's the kind of horror I love. I also loved "Frailty" and of course "Rosemary's baby". I don't know why I so disliked "Hereditary". My boyfriend loved it, it just didn't do it for me.

I can't watch horror and have no idea why people do. Nothing worse than seeing people being cruel and horrific to each other.
But then again, I grew up with violence and lived in fear my entire life. Still do. So fear isn't "fun" for me.

I grew up with a brother dying of Cystic Fibrosis, I was always trying to escape and also desensitize myself to the prospect of death. Friday the 13th and all the other scary movies helped me. Bring them on!

R22- I lost my dad when I was 10. And he LOVED horror films.. So my love for them is similar in a weird way to yours, and also it reminds me of my dad.
Probably the most vicious film that I have seen to date is L'Interieur (sp?) aka Inside starring Beatrice Dalle- Absolutely nasty.
Speak No Evil is a far better film and almost just as nasty- in a completely different way.

Ooh thanks for the tip R23. Yeah I've just always loved horror and am always looking for new ones. I was so excited to see "Pearl"and "X" and they were a let down.

NO WAY R24!!! I loved Pearl and X-- Probably my two other favorites next to Speak No Evil as far as horror films in the last 2 years. Shit.
I started that thread about a film called The Nest awhile ago, and I just saw The Iron Claw last night. Both by Sean Durkin one of my favorite directors.
I recommend both of those highly as well. The Nest and Speak No Evil are in my top 20 films of all time at this point.

It was excellent, OP. I watched it yesterday. I see on IMDB many reviewers think the visiting couple was too passive in their actions in the last section of the movie. I can see their point, but I felt differently. I won’t say any more because I don’t want to spoil it.
Thanks so much for recommending!

R25 Ha, it's funny how different people get the movies differently. I enjoyed Pearl and X, but not in a scary way. I read about the Nest on here at work so I forgot to make note of it, I will though. It's just good to have fellow horror fans, even if we like different ones.

R20 the US version of Martyrs is godawful.. Frailty was great. Have you seen Lake Mungo, Fractured? Another creepy supernatural movie you need to watch into the ending credits
R21 I can’t stand slasher films that fall under the horror category. I want creepy, a movie like Fractured…no blood or guts

It reminded me of Funny Games. They're both movies where the bad guys start violating boundaries and keep escalating until they're holding the family at gunpoint/cutting out a child's tongue. Both situations could have been avoided if the protagonists had ditched their middle class manners and told someone to FUCK OFF.

It has to have a great story to be worth it to me. I disliked Hereditary, which didn't feel like it had a great story, just some tacked-on stuff about witchcraft that didn't feel like it was at the heart of the film for me. The acting - is good but mostly it was the same-old same-old.
These "horrors that people do" films like Inside seem to come into vogue every couple of years and they have never been my faves.
I rewatched Get Out recently and found it holds up really well. I like those, and fun slasher and supernatral films from the 1980s that feature gratuitous nudity from like Michelle Bauer.

The alligator scene in the beginning of X was really well-done. I thought she was insane for jumping into a random pond in east Texas and then camera panned over the the alligator on the shore. Chilling.

by Anonymous | reply 42 | February 20, 2024 9:39 PM

Oh damn, R42, I was hoping you wouldn't ask. After I typed that I thought about it. That's a great question...The original "Nightmare on Elm Street", "Hostel" was pretty good, "Halloween"...I guess X is horror, but what I should have said is it's not the type of horror that would scare me, if that makes sense. Oh "Henry; Portrait of a Serial Killer" too.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 20, 2024 9:45 PM

Hostel is still one of the scariest movies to me.
Mostly because its real people doing very evil and horrible things, and the setting for it is VERY plausible.
Especially given how sadistic and evil, rich people can be.
And how they like to prey upon poorer, weaker people. Just for sport.
To me, that is a REAL life horror.

I don't like the torture porn movies but I love supernatural horror. Funny Games really bothered me. I guess I kept hoping someone would get away but the nonchalance of the killers shoving her overboard and then just popping the husband and going to the next house was very disturbing to me. Another one similar is Open House.
Insidious really creeped me out with all the shadowy figures hiding in corners.

R84, I'm almost afraid to ask, but have you really experienced Hostel or Saw levels of cruelty and torture in real life? If so, I'm sorry. If not, then you misunderstand what people like about these movies. (I'm not a fan myself, but many viewers are.) They're distortions and exaggerations of the sort of thing we all fear IRL. In that way, it's no different from a demonic possession horror movie, which play on the universal human fear of losing one's mind or losing control.
