She's overrated. Convince me otherwise.

I know of a Davida and a Derrida, but I can't say I've ever heard of a Dalida. She looked like a man-faced diva though, which I inherently love.

She's rated dead, which I think is fair.

She was valued about right for her talent. I think she's super entertaining a bit exotic. She was unique.

She's no Dovima...

Dalida was a huge star in France and was also very popular in other European countries as well as the Middle East. She can’t be judged by American standards.

I get Rafaella Carrà, butbai don't get Dalida, so I'm not sure I agree with you, R5.

Dalida wasn't a great singer by any stretch of the imagination, but she had a strong, heavy voice with a very peculiar tone and was versatile enough to be able to dabble in most genres without embarrassing herself. In fact, her repertoire is surprisingly varied and has quite a few interesting songs. However, what catapulted her into superstardom is the fact that she was a good actress who used her talent to perform brilliantly on stage and cultivate an alluring, seductive and elegant mystique that was quite appealing.
She was also an extremely sensitive, melodramatic woman who gave her all during every public appearance and developed strong emotional bonds with her audiences, and that is why she is considered a diva. Still, I think that it's well worth mentioning the fact that while she didn't have a spectacular voice, she was still leaps and bounds ahead of most so-called singers nowadays. Personally, while I don't love her, I think that she is an interesting personality and her work is quite enjoyable.

Just listened to "Paroles Paroles" with Alain Delon for the first time. Mind blown and changed.

[quote]Dalida became a gay icon in France with the groundbreaking 1973 song "Il Venait D'Avoir 19 Ans" ('He Had Just Turned 19'). This is the first song gays in Europe connected with, spurring something of a movement.
[quote]In the 1980s, Dalida candidly talked about her life, her spirituality, and that homosexuality is accepted in Egypt and should be accepted everywhere; audiences would go wild with applause.

Sorry that should have read "18 Ans."
Anyway here´s the song.

Her Italian version of "You Don't Own Me" which I think has more power than the French version she sang. Oddly, I can't find any record of this having been released in the 60s.

R29 I never heard her version before. Thanks for sharing that
