Ash Wednesday is St Valentine's Day this year

The priest should mark our foreheads with ashes in the shape of a heart. Why does it always have to be a cross?

Because as Greg is saying the ashes represent death and repentance in the belief that Christ died for you. They aren't gonna change it just because Ash Wednesday falls on Valentines Day.
