First, I want to thank R31 for posting that link. It's a very interesting article and answers a lot of questions.

Secondly, I somewhat resent the implication that those of us in "the brighter half" haven't attempted to persuade "the dumber half." I certainly have, even back before Trump was president.

Over the years, it's impossible to catalog the abuse I received from people I talked to about politics. The conversations generally start with, "So, what do you do?" And I would reply, "I teach at X College." And of course, the next question was, "What do you teach?"

And perhaps I should have lied, but not only do I hate to lie (which is why I've been out since 1972), but I'm very bad at it. So I would answer with the truth: American Government and/or Political Science (depending on the college).

You would be amazed with the reactions I've had to that statement -- or maybe not. But I've been fielding them since 2004, when I first started teaching here in FL. They're mostly along the lines of "just because you went to college doesn't mean you know more than me!" So when I reply, I have a series of lines I use on people depending on the person, circumstances, and attitude. Not that any of them do any good.

My most common rejoinder is, "So, how many justices are on the Supreme Court?" I would guess that fewer than one out of 25+ people I've asked actually knew. But that doesn't matter -- they still think they know more about politics than I do. Even a surgeon checking my wound didn't know! And yes, he was a native-born American. Naturalized citizens know much more about our government than native-born Americans do, because they have to pass the citizenship test to become a U.S. citizen.

The common thread is the complete ignorance of most Americans, even those who are supposedly well-educated, about the way the government actually works.

I have tried to talk rationally to many, many Deplorables about Trump -- because, with a few notable exceptions, I'm surrounded by them. But as was stated above, you can't actually have a conversation with them. They are spoiling for a fight, and will tell me I'm ignorant (in spite of my degrees -- and sometimes because of them) right to my face (and mind you, some of these people are functionally illiterate). Two different black men at two different times called me a racist because (supposedly) I assumed they were Democrats. Silly me! I thought they might be a little smarter than the crackers they're surrounded by.

So yes, some of us try. But it's a thankless task and convinces no one. And I've put myself in serious danger more than once, because most of these people carry guns at all times, and boy, do they have a temper!

Sorry -- I could go on and on about this. But I'm glad I have DL to rant to -- otherwise, I'd go bananas.
