*Mariah Carey

Oh dear…

by Anonymousreply 1February 10, 2024 4:01 PM

Hooray for Sinead! 🇮🇪

by Anonymousreply 2February 10, 2024 4:02 PM

Dave Matthews? LOL

by Anonymousreply 3February 10, 2024 4:02 PM

Cool but at least 1/2 aren't rock and roll

by Anonymousreply 4February 10, 2024 4:02 PM

r3 That's who you single out to LOL?

by Anonymousreply 5February 10, 2024 4:03 PM

[quote]That's who you single out to LOL?

I know that they define "rock and roll" very loosely. It's pretty much just a list of popular artists whether they be rock, pop, R&B, or whatever. I just don't see how the Dave Matthews Band has had any kind of lasting influence or legacy to warrant being nominated.

by Anonymousreply 6February 10, 2024 4:12 PM

That’s one mixed bag!

by Anonymousreply 7February 10, 2024 4:21 PM

r6 I don't disagree with that, I just meant you didn't say the same about Mary J Blige, for example? Is she more of a lasting "rock and roller" than Dave Matthews? (admittedly, I can't remember the name of a Dave Matthews hit, nor one of Mary J Blige's)

by Anonymousreply 8February 10, 2024 4:23 PM

Frampton is one of the nicest guys in the world, very humble and all about the music. He's been very sick. I hope he wins! And that Lou Gram is part of Foreigner's nomination, because HE made the band a STAH! And oh yeah hurrah CHEE!

by Anonymousreply 9February 10, 2024 4:27 PM

Cher, Dave Matthews, and Lenny Kravitz don’t belong on this list

by Anonymousreply 10February 10, 2024 4:28 PM

If Dolly can make it, Cher can

by Anonymousreply 11February 10, 2024 4:43 PM

Sade? Rock?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 12February 10, 2024 4:45 PM

She’ll need to turn back time to make it…

by Anonymousreply 13February 10, 2024 4:45 PM

Cher absolutely belongs on the list. She released solo hit records even when she was still paired with Sonny in the '60's, and many more afterward. She should have been on the list a long, long time ago.

by Anonymousreply 14February 10, 2024 4:49 PM

r10, Lenny is more rock than any other of the black artists mentioned.

by Anonymousreply 15February 10, 2024 4:50 PM

Sinead O'Connor had one song that people remember. Sympathy nomination.

by Anonymousreply 16February 10, 2024 4:53 PM

Cher has sang plenty of pop songs that have a rock feel. I Found Someone. If I Could Turn Back Time. Bang Bang. We All Sleep Alone. Just Like Jesse James.

I hope she gets in. Would be great for the gays.

by Anonymousreply 17February 10, 2024 5:15 PM

Chee has the longest history of anyone on this list, and she’s more rock-and-roll than a number of them.

But hasn’t she publicly said she doesn’t give a fuck about it and won’t even show up?

This video is from almost sixty fucking years ago. Who else was wearing a flashy fur and hoop earrings while covering a classic amidst large farm animals - and is still a draw in 2024?

by Anonymousreply 18February 10, 2024 5:16 PM

I’d love an Oasis snub just to watch their mouths spew their usual shit.

by Anonymousreply 19February 10, 2024 5:18 PM

People who know music know Sinead is far more than one song.

by Anonymousreply 20February 10, 2024 5:20 PM

“They can fuck themselves.”

by Anonymousreply 21February 10, 2024 5:20 PM

Cher will be there, I bet.

by Anonymousreply 22February 10, 2024 6:29 PM

It's about time for Foreigner.

by Anonymousreply 23February 10, 2024 6:47 PM

After Dolly Parton was inducted (she tried to refuse it but they still gave it to her) anyone could be nominated . At this point it should be renamed Entertainment Hall of Fame. Cher will probably refuse it but they will award it to her anyway just like Dolly.

by Anonymousreply 24February 10, 2024 7:02 PM

yes, I absolutely hate oasis.

by Anonymousreply 25February 10, 2024 7:04 PM

The Monkees deserve it more than Mariah.

by Anonymousreply 26February 10, 2024 7:12 PM

I don’t like Lenny Kravitz’s music much.

But man, if Sheryl Crow is in, it’s hard to make an argument against him.

by Anonymousreply 27February 10, 2024 7:20 PM

Sade even has an album with “Rock” in the title. Ergo she is a rocker.

Even if it is a reference to a reggae sub-genre.

It contains one of her most underrated songs, Every Word.

by Anonymousreply 28February 10, 2024 7:27 PM

Oh please. You have no leg to stand on whining about soul and R&B nominees when fucking MADONNA is there, not to mention Dolly Parton after her woeful rock album last year.

by Anonymousreply 29February 10, 2024 7:31 PM

I was hoping Phil Collins would be nominated for his solo work. It would be a lovely fuck you to Jann Wenner.

by Anonymousreply 30February 10, 2024 7:31 PM

The organization should be renamed the Rock & Pop Hall of Fame.

by Anonymousreply 31February 10, 2024 7:32 PM

r29 Who was whining about that in particular?

by Anonymousreply 32February 10, 2024 8:40 PM

Yawn

by Anonymousreply 33February 10, 2024 9:17 PM

What happens to bands like New Order/Joy Division that almost made it a year ago? I still think it's crazy that The Cure and Depeche Mode are in there and New Order is not.

by Anonymousreply 34February 10, 2024 11:21 PM

If you're gonna put people like Sheryl Crow in, then Cyndi Lauper should have been inducted a decade ago.

by Anonymousreply 35February 10, 2024 11:23 PM

Will the Oasis induction be enough for a Gallagher brothers' reconciliation?

Also I kinda like Noel's bitchy attitude. He's also one of the few people in music industry who actually had the balls to trash Taylor Swift way before it became a trend.

by Anonymousreply 36February 10, 2024 11:31 PM

35, Cyndis son is a gangster.

by Anonymousreply 37February 10, 2024 11:32 PM

That didn't stop them from inducting Tupac.

by Anonymousreply 38February 10, 2024 11:35 PM

R8, you don't know any Mary J songs?!!! She's a legend

by Anonymousreply 39February 10, 2024 11:37 PM

Frampton is well liked in the industry and has worked with a lot of people.

Frampton

Kool and The Gang

Foreigner

A Tribe Called Quest

Ozzy Osbourne

Sinead O’Connor

Cher

Dave Matthews band won the fan vote the last time they were nominated so they may slip in.

by Anonymousreply 40February 11, 2024 12:13 AM

Mary J Blige famously sang the theme to The Young and the Restless.

by Anonymousreply 41February 11, 2024 12:20 AM

Frampton sold a lot of fucking records.

I love Kool and the Gang. There's so much more to them than "Celebration."

by Anonymousreply 42February 11, 2024 12:21 AM

Pretty soon they will be nominating that great rock artist- Zamfir, Master of the Pan Flute.

by Anonymousreply 45February 11, 2024 5:34 AM

Ozzy should have been inducted a long time ago. Peter Frampton, and Cher as well.

by Anonymousreply 46February 11, 2024 6:47 AM

I thought Cher said she didnt need this and wouldnt show up to accept?

by Anonymousreply 47February 11, 2024 7:43 AM

I think she did say that R47. She's probably been frustrated all these years waiting and waiting.

by Anonymousreply 48February 11, 2024 11:51 AM

Cher, so overrated in everything.

by Anonymousreply 49February 11, 2024 12:24 PM

by Anonymousreply 52February 11, 2024 8:18 PM

It's horrible music that I would never seek out or listen to. Why would I bother to learn the names of their songs?

by Anonymousreply 53February 11, 2024 9:32 PM

^^Mary J Blige is one of the greatest R&B singers of all time. Dave Matthews has a great catalog of songs. I guess Melissa Manchester is more your speed.

by Anonymousreply 54February 11, 2024 9:45 PM

Or New Order, buy nice try.

by Anonymousreply 55February 11, 2024 10:02 PM

Mary J. Blige definitely deserves to be inducted.

by Anonymousreply 56February 11, 2024 10:04 PM

Sade and Sinead are the best options from that list

by Anonymousreply 57February 11, 2024 10:08 PM

That expansion looks good. Kudos.

by Anonymousreply 58February 11, 2024 10:12 PM

I've seen Dave Matthews live at Summerfest and can't name one song.

by Anonymousreply 59February 11, 2024 10:13 PM

Quite interesting that Cher and Mariah are both first-time nominees. I think they will get in. Should've been there before Sheryl Crow.

by Anonymousreply 60February 11, 2024 10:19 PM

[quote] ^^Mary J Blige is one of the greatest R&B singers of all time.

No she isn't. She's passable at best. There are dozens of singers who surpass her. And she influenced no one.

by Anonymousreply 61February 11, 2024 10:28 PM

r61 she's the queen of hip hop soul, has a great catalog and yes she's been influential. Of course the 60 year old white queens of DL were never really her target audience.

by Anonymousreply 62February 11, 2024 10:29 PM

[quote] she's the queen of hip hop soul

Then she's got a tiny kingdom.

mary j is great. really good songs.

by Anonymousreply 65February 11, 2024 10:50 PM

Is Bey in yet? She deserves it more than Cher or MJ Blige or Mariah.

by Anonymousreply 66February 11, 2024 11:02 PM

Cher. Cher. Cher!!!

Long, long overdue.

I hope she accepts. She has said she wouldn't due to the years' long snub of her. I hope she changes her mind. Cher belongs in the Hall of Fame.

by Anonymousreply 70February 11, 2024 11:46 PM

by Anonymousreply 74February 12, 2024 1:18 AM

[quote] [R63] don't talk about shit you know nothing about.

Don't stan someone who's the black Sheryl Crow.

by Anonymousreply 75February 12, 2024 3:50 AM

Is Janet Jackson trying to get in again? Poor thing just doesn't have any luck.

by Anonymousreply 76February 12, 2024 3:57 AM

Sade should be denied induction just for using Interstate as the typeface on her album cover at R28.

One of the worst '90s-era crimes against design.

by Anonymousreply 77February 12, 2024 4:01 AM

That article at R73 mixes its reasons for the "snubs." The B52s and Barry White 100% deserve to already be there. I'm not a fan of the Pixies but I can also understand and support their inclusion, but most of the rest of those choices are ridiculous.

Labelle was pretty much a one hit wonder. If you want to induct Patti LaBelle, then I get that, but Labelle did nothing to warrant induction. Same with The Commodores. If you've already inducted Lionel Richie, you're covered. He was the Commodores. INXS were a band with a few sort of catchy hits that did nothing to further music and they basically lasted 8 years. Outkast is a ridiculous choice (and the writer is being a bit disingenuous saying that album went diamond. It was a double album and the RIAA has lways counted sales of double albums twice, for some inexplicable reason.) Outkast was a flash in the pan. Same with Smashing Pumpkins. Influential? No. Had a few hits for a few years? Yeah, so what.

What the hall needs to get back to is honoring artists who actually made a difference, or who were so popular for such a long time, that they became legendary or iconic, or had a talent that was so great, it's undeniable. I think on the basis of those criteria, you could pick up the hall, shake it out, and lose a lot of prior inductees. And should.

by Anonymousreply 78February 12, 2024 4:01 AM

Sade should be in for reasons I'm not sure you could induct anyone else. Having a nearly 40 year career where you release an album when you feel like it, you do nearly zero press for it, and it's still a hit. Why? Because the music is good. THAT is longevity. And no one in this business has that the way she does. She's a recluse who still sells music. She would be my first vote this year.

by Anonymousreply 79February 12, 2024 4:05 AM

Really r75? That makes no sense.

by Anonymousreply 80February 12, 2024 4:06 AM

[quote] Really [R75]? That makes no sense.

Don't be so literal and it does.

by Anonymousreply 81February 12, 2024 4:15 AM

Lenny Kravitz???????

😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

by Anonymousreply 82February 12, 2024 4:16 AM

The nomination of Kravitz really shows the death of the solo male rockstar.

by Anonymousreply 83February 12, 2024 4:17 AM

And you still on Datalounge really shows the death of the minstrel show, Teacake.

by Anonymousreply 84February 12, 2024 4:19 AM

R84, Hi there.

by Anonymousreply 85February 12, 2024 4:42 AM

So do the “nominees” now have to debase themselves and campaign/beg for votes?

by Anonymousreply 86February 12, 2024 5:43 AM

^ Only those who don’t have talent, dear.

by Anonymousreply 87February 12, 2024 6:09 AM

Why are there so many? Shouldn’t they be a little more selective? Like 5 or so? Not every act that had a hit record in the last 30 years.

by Anonymousreply 88February 12, 2024 6:59 AM

Many elders swore Jan egg Jackson would never make it.

by Anonymousreply 89February 12, 2024 7:20 AM

Jan egg...

by Anonymousreply 90February 12, 2024 7:53 AM

Paul Revere & The Raiders were a popular garage rock band that were very influential for their 1960s era. They had 15 top 40 hits, 4 gold albums and deserve to be in the RRHOF more than any of the nominees. Jann Wenner had set up arbitrary rules as to who can get nominated and who can't. He lumped them together with The Monkees because they appeared regularly on the TV show Where The Action Is, and their first album had session men instead of the band, even though they were very competent musicians and toured constantly.

by Anonymousreply 91February 12, 2024 12:19 PM

[quote]Why are there so many? Shouldn’t they be a little more selective? Like 5 or so? Not every act that had a hit record in the last 30 years.

These are just the nominees from whom the inductees will be selected.

by Anonymousreply 92February 12, 2024 12:50 PM

R90 I swear typo or I fat finger typed. That was not shade about her weight.

by Anonymousreply 93February 12, 2024 1:24 PM

No r81. Mary J. Blige is in no way like that hack Sheryl Crow.

by Anonymousreply 94February 12, 2024 1:54 PM

How Mary J. the black Sheryl Crow when she plays no instruments.

by Anonymousreply 95February 12, 2024 1:56 PM

In that both of them had a decent run of hits, but their talents are not extraordinary, nor did they do anything to explode or expand music.

Fuck, you people are so literal.

by Anonymousreply 96February 12, 2024 2:20 PM

Mary J Blige has a great catalog and has been influential, and to not call her talented is ridiculous. She made her mark in her era of music.

Of course, 60 year old white queens wouldn't understand.

by Anonymousreply 97February 12, 2024 2:23 PM

No one called her untalented. And you've made the 60 yr old white queens joke five times and no one has laughed. Take the hint.

by Anonymousreply 98February 12, 2024 3:06 PM

r98 you're not the boss of Datalounge. Prisspot control freak.

by Anonymousreply 99February 12, 2024 7:05 PM

Mary J. Blige, Cher, Sade, Oasis A Tribe Called Quest and Eric B. And Rakim don’t have anything up on their websites/social media about the nominations. The rest of the nominees have all commented and put up links for voting.

by Anonymousreply 100February 12, 2024 7:22 PM

Cher and Tribe will probably get voted in.

by Anonymousreply 101February 12, 2024 7:23 PM

by Anonymousreply 109February 13, 2024 6:43 AM

^Easy Sam Kinison. I’m sure you will be the first person inducted into the Comedians Who OD in the 1980-90s with Mental Health Issues Hall of Fame when it is built.

by Anonymousreply 110February 13, 2024 6:49 AM

I still want to know if the public votes on who gets in. Has it always been that way? Because that’s kind of tacky and pathetic.

by Anonymousreply 111February 13, 2024 6:56 AM

There's a whole Google waiting for you, lazyweb r111.

by Anonymousreply 112February 13, 2024 6:59 AM

Mary J.

👍👍👍👍

by Anonymousreply 113February 13, 2024 7:03 AM

The HoF is obviously racist. Judy Garland is the white Mary J. and yet she hasn’t been inducted. Momma stumbled repeatedly and tripped over her drunken feet so that Mary J and other black soul singers could run….

by Anonymousreply 114February 13, 2024 7:10 AM

Brokencyde snubbed yet again...

by Anonymousreply 115February 13, 2024 9:41 AM

NEW ORDER - 1980s FAGS

The only ones who are still left are on Datalounge. Nobody else give a shit.

by Anonymousreply 116February 13, 2024 11:45 AM

New Order singlehandedly funded a major record label from the ashes of Joy Division and, as a result, much of the "Madchester" music scene through the mid-90's. Hugely influential and documented in the film 24 Hour Party People and much, much more.

by Anonymousreply 117February 13, 2024 12:08 PM

I think that's wonderful r117

by Anonymousreply 118February 13, 2024 8:01 PM

I agree with New Order they deserve to be inducted. I saw them live back when I was a young pup back in 1983 at the Paradise Garage in Soho NYC.

by Anonymousreply 119February 13, 2024 8:04 PM

Also New Order’s elevation to the HoF will pave the way for electronic acts and BritPop.

by Anonymousreply 120February 21, 2024 6:42 PM

For those of us who actually like rock music, it doesn't get better than Jane's Addiction. Not only is their music great, but Perry Farrell started Lollapalooza.

by Anonymousreply 121February 21, 2024 7:26 PM

Depeche Mode is legendary and iconic. One of the best live bands ever.

New Order and The Cure? Not so much.

by Anonymousreply 124February 22, 2024 6:53 AM

Two voters explain their choices.

[quote]Voter 1: Foreigner is the epitome of “anonymous classic rock.” They’ve been touring over the past few years without any original members and it doesn’t seem that anyone minds. It’s a brand, not a band. The brand gets a boost by being in the Rock Hall. Hooray, I guess.

About Lenny Kravitz:

[quote]Voter 2: A hard no. Another member of the B-team. He’s a cool guy who has some cool songs. I don’t see the influence. He seems more of a symbol of rock rather than something really new. How can you put Lenny Kravitz and Kool & the Gang next to each other? It’s a joke.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 125March 6, 2024 1:49 AM

R125 glad they’re ignoring Foreigner and Kravitz, but it’s weird that they’re so pro hip-hop and R&B but see neo-soul, funk and pop as antithetical to rock. (Yes! Funk!)

It’s a bit silly at this point.

by Anonymousreply 126March 6, 2024 7:30 AM

They need to rebrand the stupid ROCK and ROLL part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and call it Popular Music Hall of Fame. Most of the inductees over the last 15-20 years are not rock and roll or are bottom of the barrel rock and roll adjacent.

by Anonymousreply 127March 6, 2024 11:40 AM

Rock and Roll, as we knew it and as the HOF was established, is dead. Times change.
