GenZ'er with 2 degrees breaks down in tears after not finding a job in NYC

“This is the most humbled I’ve ever felt in my life,” a teary-eyed Gen Z graduate reported back to her TikTok fans while holding a stack of résumés after a disappointing day of job-seeking—and the brutal wake-up call has struck a generational nerve.

In the video, which has amassed over 23 million views, Lohanny Santos, a 26-year-old from Brooklyn with a dual degree and three languages up her sleeve, shared that she’d been going door-to-door to find work to no avail.

Santos, who posts under the handle @lohannysant, broke down in tears while admitting that she’d given up hopes of becoming a full-time influencer and needed a job with a full-time salary.

After her online venture didn't generate enough income to pay the bills, she went into several coffee shops to hand them her resume—just like she did when she was 16 and was looking for a job. But it wasn’t long before the Pace University graduate realized that not even “two degrees in communications and acting” is enough to land a $16-an-hour job in New York in the current tough job market.

"It's honestly a little bit embarrassing because I'm literally applying for, like, minimum-wage jobs," she cried. "And some of them are being like, 'We're not hiring' and it's like, ‘What?’ This is not what I expected."

“This sucks,” she concluded.

Lockdown-era graduates already faced a tough road after they were forced to study alone on Zoom during the pandemic rather than share the valuable coming-of-age university experience enjoyed by their parents. Now they’re being told that the degree they went into debt for is no longer worth much—as Santos found out.

Many major employers have dropped their long-held degree requirements; meanwhile, recruiters globally are now five times more likely to search for new hires by skills over higher education. Even LinkedIn has echoed that the hottest skills to land a job right now can’t be learned in a textbook.

"I was so upset and disappointed in myself because growing up, I was told that if I get an education, if I go to college, then I'll be successful," Santos told Business Insider—and she’s not the first Gen Zer to complain about feeling tricked into pursuing further education.

Just last month, 27-year-old Robbie Scott similarly went viral on TikTok for insisting that Gen Z isn’t any less willing to work than generations before. Instead, he said, they are “getting angry and entitled and whiny” about the prospect of having to work hard for the rest of their adult life, only to “get nothing in return.”

“What’s sh-tty is, we’re holding up our end of the deal,” Scott said. “We’re staying in school. We’re going to college. We’ve been working since we were 15, 16 years old…doing everything that y’all told us to do so that we can what? Still be living in our parents’ homes in our late twenties?”

Just hours after Santos hit upload on her harsh reality check moment, over 3 million people had tuned in and thousands of comments were flooding in from people in a similar position.

"I had 50,000 followers on TikTok, and I woke up to an audience of 130,000 followers 48 hours later," she told Business Insider. In the days since then, her follower count has scaled to over the 150,000 mark.

“I’m so happy that I shared this with you because I feel like I can make someone else feel less alone,” the TikToker added in a recent follow-up video.

“Girl, I totally understand,” one user sympathized. “I'm an immigrant, completely bilingual, and with a master's degree, the only job that called me back is at a bubble tea store and that's what I'm doing now.”

“So many people are going through this right now! You are not alone! Nobody seems to know what the future looks like right now, we're all scared,” another added.

Meanwhile, others accused Santos of “just trying to get attention as an influencer so she doesn't have to get a real job.”

Either way, Santos’s public job search somewhat paid off—yesterday, she announced that she landed her first brand partnership with a contraception pill company off the back of the video.

I'm shocked, I tell you, SHOCKED.

My hunch is that the Columbia and Fordham grads with economics degrees are doing just fine in NYC and anywhere else they might care to land.

by Anonymousreply 3February 10, 2024 12:41 AM

Not reading or watching all that; just came to say she has lovely skin. Peaches and cream, for real.

With two degrees, no less. They’re so clueless — it’s exhausting.

This was the exact same thing GenX was saying, over 30 years ago.

So suck it up, buttercup.

"It's honestly a little bit embarrassing because I'm literally applying for, like, minimum-wage jobs," she cried. "And some of them are being like, 'We're not hiring' and it's like, ‘What?’ This is not what I expected."

How old is this person. Has she ever had a job. Does she have any relevant work experience for any job? What about temp work doing admin/reception jobs? The fact that she's walking around handing out resumes like she's giving out flyers for free shawarma, rather than more practical online searches says she's wholly naive about the job process. There are dozens of free workshops for resume and job searches in NYC through the department of labor. Also, what about Pace university career planning and placement or alumni?

Why would any company hire someone who clearly is "embarrassed" about applying for the job? It just screams, "I'm outta here the second I land a better gig."

by Anonymousreply 10February 10, 2024 12:57 AM

^^^methinks she's STILL trying to be an influencer and trying to go viral with this post.

I very much doubt anyone told her to get a degree in acting from Pace. In fact I imagine her parents were begging her in tears not to do that.

by Anonymousreply 12February 10, 2024 12:59 AM

If she was serious about wanting to be an influencer those photos of her should have been in her underwear

by Anonymousreply 13February 10, 2024 1:01 AM

Nobody is entitled to a rewarding career just because you achieved one or two degrees. It is your skills combined with your intelligence that makes you valuable to employers.

by Anonymousreply 14February 10, 2024 1:01 AM

If her ambition in life is to be an influencer, then she is of no use to the planet and should turn herself in for Soylent Green. What a complete waste of oxygen.

by Anonymousreply 18February 10, 2024 1:53 AM

It’s who you know. I work in a company where most people got their job because of someone they knew. And believe me they lucked out because no one would employ them anywhere else!

by Anonymousreply 19February 10, 2024 2:16 AM

R3 I have an M.A. from Fordham in English and through a series of strange circumstances ended up landing in accounting on the west coast, where I'm originally from. I think having a Fordham degree impressed my old school Catholic boss, which sort of surprised me as I didn't think it had much pull outside of NYC/the Tri-State area.

I'm six years older than the girl in this video. While Pace may not have a stellar reputation, I'm surprised she's aiming for barista positions. Then again, having a degree doesn't guarantee you anything, which is something I also had to learn the hard way.

by Anonymousreply 20February 10, 2024 2:34 AM

Humbled Gen Z?

Oxymoron.

by Anonymousreply 21February 10, 2024 2:44 AM

Degrees in Communication and Acting; the two skills necessary to become an 𝐼𝑛𝑓𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑟.

Apparently her planning did not include a Plan B, such as Marketable Skills.

by Anonymousreply 22February 10, 2024 2:45 AM

Dreams are a great thing, but you know something? They take a lot of energy. But that's OK. There's a job waiting for you down the block from your house that doesn't require a thought in your head or a hope in your heart. So come on down and work for the artificial flower factory. Why fight it? OK? Thank you.

by Anonymousreply 23February 10, 2024 2:59 AM

This is why Gen Z is DOA as a generation. They cannot handle anything. They’re drugged up, mutilated, have one psychiatric disorder after the next, they can’t even talk to someone in public without having panic attacks. Everyone talks about Boomers being a burden on society - Gen Z will be the next burden. They need to be subsidized.

by Anonymousreply 24February 10, 2024 3:12 AM

Welcome to the rest of your life, kid. We were ALL sold that bill of goods that college = a good paying job.

Iris/r23, “Give me your money! Give me your money!”

by Anonymousreply 26February 10, 2024 3:27 AM

There was a news story here in CA recently where some Gen Z'ers going to college had their Discord group hacked. I guess whoever hacked it uploaded some really horrible images of porn, kiddie porn, beastiality, etc. They were interviewing one of the students and she said, "Some people were throwing up and had to go to the hospital." My gen X brain laughed...I mean, we were renting Faces Of Death for entertainment from video stores back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 27February 10, 2024 3:49 AM

What jobs was she actually applying for? Put the "influencer" nonsense aside. If she speaks three languages, that should help her enormously.. We're not getting half the story here. The core curriculum of her college degree gives her enough skills for an entry level position in any company. And communications and acting should have given her the confidence to sell herself.

She's looking for a job/career that requires the least amount of work, so she can stay at home and spend most of her day on TikTok and other social media.

by Anonymousreply 28February 10, 2024 4:03 AM

Have you guys seen the 1960 movie “The Time Machine”. (I won’t even ask if folks have read the book — no one reads H.G. Wells anymore).

But how prescient Wells was: He predicted a future of young, beautiful morons with no interests beyond play and no curiosity about history or the world around them. They’re passive, lack initiative and imagination. And they become fodder to the Morlocks, who literally slaughter and eat them. But there are many other real ways to exploit these poor dumb fucks who have zero skills and common sense.

by Anonymousreply 29February 10, 2024 4:14 AM

[quote] They need to be subsidized.

They need to be euthanized.

Fixed it for you.

[quote] If she speaks three languages, that should help her enormously.. We're not getting half the story here. The core curriculum of her college degree gives her enough skills for an entry level position in any company.

I had a friend who was in his mid 30's with a Master's Degree in English, and according to him, all he could find was a job working for Goodwill Industries as a cashier, alongside people with only their GED diplomas.

I kid you not.

Some people are academically gifted, but they have absolutely no real world skills, or critical thinking ability.

I kept pushing him to find something better, but he would always just brush me off.

It was the strangest thing to me.

And after puttering away at that job for years, his solution was to go back to school.

Some people are just beyond help.

by Anonymousreply 31February 10, 2024 4:58 AM

Why is a gen z handing out paper resumes? She needs to put certain key words in her digital resume.

Then she needs to look at the top fortune 500 companies and start applying on their websites.

by Anonymousreply 32February 10, 2024 4:59 AM

[quote] shared that she’d been going door-to-door to find work to no avail.

I don’t think that’s how it works.

Because it was theatrical. She was creating content for TikTok. It worked, she picked up 100k+ followers and an influencer gig.

by Anonymousreply 36February 10, 2024 5:16 AM

I find it really hard to believe that someone who has a degree in Communications and claims to be fluent in three languages has zero job prospects. Her main problem seems to be a total lack of critical thinking ability.

by Anonymousreply 37February 10, 2024 5:17 AM

So in addition to being lazy and annoying, GenZ is also extremely manipulative and deceitful.

What a lovely generation of scammers and fakers.

by Anonymousreply 38February 10, 2024 5:27 AM

If someone with two degrees walked in to my cafe and asked for a minimum wage job, I’d think they were over qualified and pass on them.

That’s even if I was hiring. It’s a bit special to assume you can walk in to a few places randomly and walk out with job.

by Anonymousreply 39February 10, 2024 6:03 AM

She really needs to banish the word “literally” from her vocabulary. When they do that literally thing, peoples’ respect for them just flatlines.

by Anonymousreply 40February 10, 2024 6:10 AM

Yes, I think 'terrible twenties' is now a thing just like 'terrible twos' is/was.

by Anonymousreply 45February 10, 2024 7:03 AM

Get a job as home health care aid. There's plenty of old goobers needing a diaper change.

by Anonymousreply 46February 10, 2024 7:18 AM

She should look into temping, although I imagine that may be a bit different nowadays compared to 25 years ago when I did it. I moved to NYC at 22 and temped for a year at various companies, doing all kinds of office work, including data entry and web site updates. I already had web coding skills but those temp jobs let me build a resume and get references for future jobs. Within a year I found full time work and haven't stopped since. That's what bothers me about her story. She seems to expect to be hired just because she has some degrees. Put some work in first, honey, and build a resume. Nobody gives a shit what extracurricular activities you did in college, they need to know you aren't going to get hired and just sit there filing your nails all day.

by Anonymousreply 47February 10, 2024 7:36 AM

She seems to have a miserable personality. Also perhaps stupid because she never read the memo that only Bachelor diplomas from top tier colleges are in themselves a bit impressive. All other diplomas are just rubber stamps and the applicant needs to somehow show they are self-starting, motivated, and clever young people. Not cry babies.

by Anonymousreply 51February 10, 2024 9:26 AM

I don't know if it's been said or not, but who takes resumes to a minimum wage job? The first jobs I had coming out school in retail, you go in, ask for the manager, ask if they are hiring, they hand you a form and you fill it out. From my experience, 90% of the interview is how you go about doing the above, how you present yourself, how you ask and answer questions. At that entry level, they don't care about your degrees, they just want to make sure you're not going to embarrass them when having to deal with the public.

by Anonymousreply 52February 10, 2024 9:49 AM

I thought everybody was hiring right now?

by Anonymousreply 53February 10, 2024 9:53 AM

Doesn't Pace have an alumni networking service? She seems helpless no matter what skills and credentials she may think she possesses.

by Anonymousreply 54February 10, 2024 9:58 AM

No common sense.

by Anonymousreply 55February 10, 2024 10:04 AM

Putting aside how stupidly performative this was, I don’t mind the Gen Zers in my workplace (law firm). They have pushed back against a lot of extraneous crap that used to be baked into the system and because the business model requires us to hire new people every year, they’re largely succeeding.

by Anonymousreply 56February 10, 2024 11:48 AM

R20, R3 here - congratulations on your success! You're the kind of liberal arts grad who makes professors stand up and applaud. You are obviously adaptable and equipped with a set of skills that employers value.

I'm from a large midwestern city, and Fordham's top-notch reputation is definitely known here. In the legal field, just as one example, a Fordham law degree stands out hugely on a resume. Your Fordham M.A. in English is golden.

Wishing you continued success! 🙏

by Anonymousreply 57February 10, 2024 11:48 AM

The soft skills market is pretty clogged. We have enough artists, writers, content creators, etc.

People need to train in jobs that are needed - trades, for one.

And instead of learning three languages, she should have learned coding and several computer platforms/languages.

by Anonymousreply 58February 10, 2024 11:53 AM

^ Isn't coding now being taken over by AI? I do agree that trades are much needed and under-encouraged to smart young people.

Some of the smartest people I know are ASE-certified auto mechanics.

by Anonymousreply 59February 10, 2024 11:56 AM

Most of them seem to not understand that no matter how many degrees they have or even work experience they have, NO ONE OWES YOU A DAMN THING.

She wasted her time getting two mostly useless degrees most likely because she thought they would enable her to get a well paying job where she would have to do little real-world work & come and go as she mostly pleases. Does she know how to type, can she keep books, does she understand shipping and receiving systems? Those are the kind of skills that will help you get a job. But they require you to be present every day for 8 hours (or sometimes more) a day. That scares people like her to death.

by Anonymousreply 60February 10, 2024 12:25 PM

I wonder if George Santos is her brother? She should change her name to something more popular in NYC.

They are Peter pans, these millennials and Zs. Their boomer and Gen x parents instilled in them that they’re the second coming, and they feel that they should be handed their dream job on a silver platter. She never said she was fluent in three languages, just that she "spoke" them. Her surname is Santos, so I'm guessing she grew up in an English/Spanish speaking household, and then took French or something all through high school. Not that this is anything to sniff at, considering most Americans barely speak one language. I know at least in Chicago and LA, being bilingual in Spanish and English is a real boon to job-seekers looking for receptionist and customer service jobs.
