Should Biden continue to run?
by Anonymous | reply 142 | February 12, 2024 5:18 PM |
Trumptards abound. Never mind he confused Haley with Pelosi, Iran with Turkey, Obama with Biden, E. Jean with Ivana, and airports with 1776.
Never mind he wants the US out of NATO to leave Europe defenseless against Putin. Never mind Jared got an unfathomable $2 billion from the murderous Saudi MBS---for? Never mind the unnecessary Covid-19 dead.
And never mind the desecrated and vandalized Capitol and dead and wounded defenders of it as well as the terrified Congress in hiding in an attempt to halt the legitimate transition of executive power, excused first as "peaceful protestors," then "peaceful tourists." Never mind the Vice-President's abject fear of getting into a Secret Service vehicle. And never mind the subsequent arrests and sentencing of those "peaceful protesting tourists."
Too many Americans are unutterably ignorant.

Trump is in apparent cognitive decline, if not actually crazy (he's definitely crazy), but I'm not going to pretend that Biden isn't also exhibiting serious cognitive decline and confusion. If the role of President had any real power, he should not be running. However, we all should know by now that being "President' is merely a role, one that calls for the President to be the public-facing "leader" (figurehead) of America. Every decision is made behind the scenes, and the role of the president is merely to report those decisions to the general public, at times with a lot of fanfare. This is the only reason that makes sense as to why the Democrats even allowed Biden to run again. He's a nice, grandfatherly, well-intentioned and harmless individual and as such, being the President, in an essentially name-only capacity, isn't such a travesty. I'd rather have a much younger, more vital, more future-thinking person as President, but only if that role had real power to change things and wasn't just carrying out what the behind-the-scenes deciders are ordering be done.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 9, 2024 5:46 PM |
Biden won't run. You can say he is running and he might say he is running. But at the end, his name will not be on the ballot. Wait and see for yourself.

by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 9, 2024 6:14 PM |
I think Biden has been a very good president - the economy is extremely strong, he has supported our allies abroad and helped weaken Putin at an extremely low cost to us. But the accumulation of gaffes and memory deficits is now reaching the point where he's going to lose to Trump, even though Trump is crazier and senile. I'd rather he step out of the way and let the party elect a new generation who can beat Trump. I'm for a Whitmer/Saunders ticket.

There was just a report that we now use Mexico more than China for imports - which is something MAGAts desperately wanted. Biden did something Trump wanted to do, but didn't.

That will be impossible once the general election season begins. Biden can't run a silent, invisible campaign for re-election. There will need to be some impromptu speaking and availability to the press. Running for president is mentally and physically grueling. It will be interesting to see how Biden fares on the campaign trail.

by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 9, 2024 7:50 PM |
I think what happened is Joe was incredibly incensed about the memory accusations, particularly as the special prosecutor implied he didn't remember when Beau died. Biden probably ignored the advice of his advisors and instead opted for an immediate reaction. Joe is normally very good when rehearsed (aren't we all), he should have taken a few days to assemble talking points.
Has he lost a step or two mentally and physically? No doubt. But Bottom line is the Biden presidency is very successful. The Repukes will be coming at him with everything.

Chris christie was on The View and said something that seems to be very true after Joy cited all of the accomplishments of the Biden Administration. He said the accomplishments are good, but Biden can't communicate them; he used to be able to, but not now. He said Obama was able to communicate the message. Of course, the gaggle of harridans immediately pounced on him, but he's correct. Biden is unable to forcefully articulate why he deserves another term.

I think the Biden administration can’t get a word in edgewise. Of course, they could be letting Dump take all of the attention, expecting Dump to hang himself, which he continues to do every time he opens his mouth. I think it’s a combination of both.

That was the same problem Hillary had in 2016 (well, one of her problems). No matter how hard she tried to talk about her plans, the media and the public were fixated on Trump. We may see a repeat of 2016 unless Biden can find a way to gain control of the narrative and the media can stop being so obsessed with Trump. Even the liberal media only want to talk about Trump and every new detail in his legal cases, and they rarely devote more than a minute or two to Biden's successes.

If he stumbles or looks weak, his run will be extremely difficult. March 7th is so critical. Roy, I suggest a medically induced coma. Wake up to Trump, wake up to Biden but wake up refreshed.

[quote]Fuck off- Just trolldar me. I make bad jokes, liked Knots landing in reruns as a fat gay boy. in 1991, love the name Roy Suckaboo, loved the film The Nest, and make jokes about my lady potato. I don't even know what a lady potato is, but it sounds gross and makes me laugh. Biden is going to lose. And I cannot even picture this country with Trump as president again. i am horrified.
Oh please, R110 That's the tactic the Russians use. They like Knots Landing, they love "The Nest"...we've heard it all before. You're a Russian troll.

[quote] The first presidential election in which Joe Biden was eligible to vote featured Lyndon Johnson beating Barry Goldwater. History remembers LBJ’s presidency as chaotic because of his tragic adventuring in Vietnam, but in other respects it was remarkable. His Great Society echoed Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal (FDR was Biden’s childhood president). Under Johnson, the federal government took ambitious steps to advance civil rights, to rein in poverty, attack disease, beautify human landscapes and conserve wild ones, and to further science — these were the Apollo space program years. Not every project worked, but lots have lasted: Medicare, Medicaid and food stamps, for instance.
[quote] So Biden was socialized in an era when government took on big causes, and you can see it reflected in his first-term commitment to rebuilding infrastructure on a grand scale, boosting a new sustainable energy economy with billions of dollars for solar panels and battery factories, dramatically increasing the number of people with healthcare, and standing up for gun control, voting rights and reproductive rights.
[...]
[quote] Age matters. My cohort agrees. Why did Biden believe he could do what he did in his first term? Because he’d seen it done. Let’s hope the politicians of the future are watching his successes closely.

"Give it up"

r120, look up "fat chance". It's as succinct a message as I know. Go ahead and stick with your *Whyyyys* and *They SHOULD haves* and such. It's going to be Biden vs Trump. Deal with it.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | February 10, 2024 10:55 PM |
There are two separate questions. First, is Biden too old to be an effective president? The answer is a resounding no because he has accomplished a lot despite MAGAts' attempts to destroy his presidency.
Second, is Biden too old to be an effective communicator and campaigner during a grueling campaign where the fate of democracy hangs in the balance? Unfortunately, politics these days is more about performing than about governing. Biden used to be a great performer. Trump may be nearly as old as Biden and far more incoherent, but he has a certain manic energy that seems to propel him forward. If Biden can't match Trump's energy level and rekindle some of that old Joe magic, we're in trouble. I hope Joe still has it in him, but honestly I'm not sure.

Oh look, another Biden is an old grampa thread.
1. Passed the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure package to increase investment in the national network of bridges and roads, airports, public transport and national broadband internet, as well as waterways and energy systems.
2. Helped get more than 500 million life-saving COVID-19 vaccinations in the arms of Americans through the American Rescue Plan.
3. Stopped a 30-year streak of federal inaction on gun violence by signing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act that created enhanced background checks, closed the “boyfriend” loophole, and provided funds for youth mental health.
4. Made a $369 billion investment in climate change, the largest in American history, through the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.
5. Ended the longest war in American history by pulling the troops out of Afghanistan.
6. Provided $10,000 to $20,000 in college debt relief to Americans with loans who make under $125,000 a year. This was struck down but the Supreme Court, however, the administration has announced a new plan to forgive billions in loans that were qualified under special programs but not done due to DOE mismanagement in previous years. Read the article above)
7. Cut child poverty in half through the American Rescue Plan.
8. Capped prescription drug prices at $2,000 per year for seniors on Medicare through the Inflation Reduction Act.
9. Passed the COVID-19 relief deal that provided payments of up to $1,400 to many struggling U.S. citizens while supporting renters and increasing unemployment benefits.
10. Achieved historically low unemployment rates after the pandemic caused them to skyrocket.
11. Imposed a 15% minimum corporate tax on some of the largest corporations in the country, ensuring that they pay their fair share, as part of the historic Inflation Reduction Act.
12. Recommitted America to the global fight against climate change by rejoining the Paris Agreement.
13. Strengthened the NATO alliance in support of Ukraine after the Russian invasion by endorsing the inclusion of world military powers Sweden and Finland.
14. Authorized the assassination of the Al Qaeda terrorist Ayman al-Zawahiri, who became head of the organization after the death of Osama bin Laden.
15. Gave Medicare the power to negotiate prescription drug prices through the Inflation Reduction Act while also reducing government health spending.
16. Held Vladimir Putin accountable for his invasion of Ukraine by imposing stiff economic sanctions.
17. Boosted the budget of the Internal Revenue Service by nearly $80 billion to reduce tax evasion and increase revenue.
18. Created more jobs in one year (6.6 million) than any other president in U.S. history.
19. Reduced healthcare premiums under the Affordable Care Act by $800 a year as part of the American Rescue Plan.
20. Signed the PACT Act to address service members’ exposure to burn pits and other toxins.
21. Signed the CHIPS and Science Act to strengthen American manufacturing and innovation.
22. Reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act through 2027.
23. Halted all federal executions after the previous administration reinstated them after a 17-year freeze

by Anonymous | reply 138 | February 11, 2024 9:33 PM |
Wow, they are trivial to people who would not mind losing our Democracy.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | February 11, 2024 9:36 PM |
R138 is a typical ignorant MAGAt, a moron who is proud of being a Know-Nothing, as knowledge is for those "Harvard boutique" [tm GHWB] East and Left Coast "elites."
What is it you think Republicans have in mind to forward the progress of the United States, her people, and democracy---
Aside from absolutely nothing?
They did not even have a Party Platform statement in November 2020, that's how much Republicans are totally indifferent to our citizenry, to you---
other than to spend their waking moments thinking of how to end Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid;
how to reduce or even eliminate taxes on the 1%;
how to get away with taking bribes from Putin, MBS, and others;
how to further restrict the healthcare of girls and women;
how to gerrymander Blacks out of any meaningful votes;
how to further restrict voting procedures;
Etc. Totally bereft of any ideas or even inclinations to govern with the common welfare in mind.
Republicans view the United States as a corporation, and they are beholden only to the Investor Class.
If the Sermon on the Mount could be "monetized," no American would go hungry or homeless.
