CNN promotes Jim Acosta to weekdays at 10am ET, shakes up struggling morning show as ratings issues continue
The long-troubled "CNN This Morning," which was the brainchild of since-fired CEO Chris Licht, will now be hosted by Kasie Hunt at 5-7 a.m. ET, with current anchors Poppy Harlow and Phil Mattingly being pushed aside. CNN says Harlow and Mattingly are being considered for other roles at the network that "showcase their talents and work well for them."
Yes, Phil Mattingly has been canceled.

"CNN News Central," anchored by John Berman, Kate Bolduan and Sara Sidner, will air in the 7-10 a.m. ET slot and Acosta will anchor at 10 a.m., followed by Pamela Brown at 11 a.m.

Far as I'm concerned they can put Acosta, Boris Sanchez, and that lovely young guy Omar, and Anderson Cooper on and that's it.They don't need a single other thing.

Well, I like Jim Acosta on the weekend afternoons. I am an MSNBC devotee, but I always switched to Acosta on CNN on weekend afternoons because I cannot watch all these weekend shows that basically are reruns of the week on MSNBC
I also cannot watch Alicia Menendez, Symone Sanders and Rev Al Sharption on MSNBC.

John, Sara, and Kate hace to get up earlier.

Too many women on CNN and MSNBC.
Nobody wants to watch that.
Men are the draw.
The sooner these cable news executives realize it, the better.

Dead space for CNN. At 10AM everybody is tuned into the Drew Barrymore Show or Hoda

They have struggled with their morning shows for eons! I remember when Chris Cuomo started doing CNN mornings like 10 years ago and we see what a flop that turned out to be.
Agree r8, Jim Acosta is only being foisted to weekdays because it's an election year. He is really pleasant to watch on weekends but he may not be ratings booster.
Omar Jimenez is a rising star. John Berman has anchored virtually every program on CNN, I hope they pay him a truckload of money.

Acosta is a handsome guy, but he's pretty dour. Is his stern unsmiling demeanor going to work at 10 in the morning?

r10 as said the 10am slot is a essentially a throwaway so they don't care. Most people are at work or have left their homes for the day by 10am, and people who are at home are watching talk shows or streaming.
He is being put there because he is good at covering breaking political stories and we are approaching peak election season with Trump, who you may recall hated Jim Acosta's guts.

I'm surprised CNN doesn't use more of Michael Smerconish. He has great energy, pops through the screen. And has a working class "every man" quality. I think he'd be great for a weekday morning show.

Poppy and Phil were very capable, albeit very mild, which I assumed was required of them. I hope they find new roles.
Still hoping the new boss lures Brian Williams in.

The Saturday morning Chris Wallace Show has Kara Swisher and a few other regulars debating current issues. It’s a throwback to the old type of panel shows where people were less bombastic and more well informed.

Why didn't they let John Berman and Poppy Harlow have the morning? I like both of them. And I think Jim Sciutto was good too. I follow him and Acosta on Twitter and they both hate Trump. Now if they really want to go for the ratings, they ought to put Boris on at 7 AM. Yeah. Just put him on and leave him on until Noon!
The most overpriced asshole on CNN is Jake Tapper.

He’s definitely a moderate Dem and when he reads his viewer mail it’s evident that people used to getting fed what they want to hear, and knowing exactly what they are supposed to think, get irate when he deigns to wander from the orthodoxy.

Kasie Hunt is a very good reporter as I recall. Seems like the network has an abundance of talent, but the suits and the Editorial Desks don't have a clue what to do with them. It's a shame too. I'm old enough to remember when CNN had a real international perspective and was respected. There's a wonderful little movie produced for HBO years ago starring Michael Keaton , Helena Bonham Carter, and David Suchet, called Live from Baghdad that tells the story of how CNN made its name. Today, Ted Turner would be rotating in his grave at what they've become.

They still do. They actually send all of their key anchors overseas to report.
Way more than MSNBC, which is the same show repeated all day long with vaguely different snark.

Not quite the same. CNN built it's reputation with global news coverage and hopes to someday regain that level of respect and audience share. MSNBC however has never been anything more than the voice of the DNC domestically attacking republicans or defending democrats. MSNBC has no international mission unless in the service of those objectives.

Is Brianna Keillor gone for good?
I loved her aggressive interviewing style when used on politicians and mouthpieces trying to not answer direct, reasonable questions, who tried to keep striving to talking points.
I think CNN doesn't/didn't know how to use her strengths in their lineup. I don't think she should be saddled with a co-anchor, and I don't think she really works well on the morningside programs. I would take an hour from Jake Tapper or Blitzer and let Brianna run with it.

CNN will never be able to compete with MSNBC again. People watch cable news now for opinions that mirror their own, unless there is breaking news, like a hurricane, or some baby trapped in a well. Fox and MSNBC have the two political markets cornered, while CNN is left to twist in the wind. CNN tries to appeal to everyone, but pleases no one.

Yes, R52. She is somebody's darling girl because she was groomed for a top spot when that asshole had his brief run as top dog. When she did that "town Hall" with Trump she was coached and rehearsed and went through exhaustive prep with a team of people. Unprecedented. And she was new. She became friends with Maggie Haberman.
