The Grammys are a whole joke

Taylor Swift has 4 AOTYs yet Kanye, Jay, Usher, Queen Bey has 0. Some of the most critically acclaimed albums of all time. The point is the Grammys will always award the least rhythmic sounding song or artist with about a 20 year average exception. It’s asinine( especially for an award ceremony which claims it’s not merely a popularity contest. But is Blanche it is. And a subversive one at that because it will always award the most far away from contemporary black music artist that exists.

by Anonymousreply 52February 28, 2024 11:20 PM

Incomprehensible gibberish.

by Anonymousreply 1February 5, 2024 11:43 PM

I was about to agree with you until you name-checked Kanye, Jay Z, Usher, and Beyoncé. Collectively, they deserve zero Grammys.

by Anonymousreply 2February 5, 2024 11:45 PM

This isn’t about sour grapes. It’s about being real. The Styles, Swifts, and Ellishes are talented but come the fuck on. Every young white artists with some solid reviews and huge commercial impact will win a general category. A black artist should be grateful to even be nominated? Fuck outta here.

by Anonymousreply 3February 5, 2024 11:45 PM

R2 Fair enough. But this about reviews. The same way universally acclaimed films usually get nominated for Oscars. Look at the wins. It will always be the most similar to music that came out in the 70s and 70s with icing on the cake of a young white cunt with a huge commercial appeal.

by Anonymousreply 4February 5, 2024 11:46 PM

I stopped watching any awards shows years ago. Much ado about nothing if you ask me. I have grown to detest celebrity culture.

by Anonymousreply 5February 5, 2024 11:48 PM

A record like Crazy by Gnarls Barley can’t take home Record the Year but Miley Cyrus’ Flowers. Kanye’s albums universal acclaim yet some middle brow shit always wins. This not about their personalities or how much money they got. There is complete illicit bias. Ed Sheeran, who is one of my favorite current pop artis can easily win Record of the Year for a Marvin Gaye retread yet when Usher or John Legend realest the same type of seeeping, too 50 dominant, solid reviews love ballads they ALWAYS lose. Fuck outta here. Fuck the Grammys and their bias.

by Anonymousreply 6February 5, 2024 11:49 PM

Sweeping*, top 40 dominant.

by Anonymousreply 7February 5, 2024 11:50 PM

Way back when, the Grammys were all about traditional music. Gale Garnett's We'll Sing In the Sunshine beat Dylan's Blowing in the Wind for Best Folk. But in the end, the Grammys are an industry award. They give awards to the successful artists.

by Anonymousreply 8February 5, 2024 11:50 PM

[quote] And a subversive one at that because it will always award the most far away from contemporary black music artist that exists.

How about brown voices? Are the brown voices also silenced?

by Anonymousreply 9February 5, 2024 11:51 PM

R9 yes bitch they are.

by Anonymousreply 10February 5, 2024 11:52 PM

Why do you write like an old white man making a ham-fisted attempt at Ebonics? It’s a whole mess.

by Anonymousreply 11February 5, 2024 11:55 PM

Teacake is Jada.

by Anonymousreply 12February 5, 2024 11:56 PM

SZA shoulda won album of the year. That album was transformative, and evocative and influential but hey Taylor Swift wrote another top selling album and plays the guitar, she is a musical genius. Rolls my motherfucking eyes.

SZA’s album also broke records for weeks at number one.

by Anonymousreply 13February 6, 2024 12:00 AM

worst cosplay on DL

by Anonymousreply 14February 6, 2024 12:00 AM

R13, woulda, coulda, shoulda. It's subjective. And also a popularity contest.

by Anonymousreply 15February 6, 2024 12:01 AM

R11 I don’t know but what lie was told about what I’m saying.

by Anonymousreply 16February 6, 2024 12:01 AM

If Usher would have released 24K, he would have been nominated, congratulated for a great album with commercial success but ultimately not groundbreaking enough.

by Anonymousreply 17February 6, 2024 12:03 AM

Is r4 suggesting that "Barbie" is the favored movie for awards?

Go read Rolling Stone; they always have "Best" lists that include zero commercially appealing songs.

Is the OP suggesting that because he says so that Taylor Swift should have lost?

Gabor?

by Anonymousreply 19February 6, 2024 12:07 AM

R18 My motivation is not Taylor Swift losing; it doesn’t add up. 4 Album of the year wins. Come on, her timing ain’t that great. There is complete bias and all the black industry tastemakers should protest the Grammys, not perform, and stop letting the Grammys use them for youth and the cool factor. This bitch is more talented than Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack, Alicia Keys, and Jay-Z?

by Anonymousreply 20February 6, 2024 12:10 AM

No use crying over spilled milk. They will just have to try harder next year. But whining and rubbing your pussy because the people you wanted to win a Grammy didn't win, is just a waste of your time.

by Anonymousreply 21February 6, 2024 12:12 AM

I thought last night's Grammys was one of the best yet. It was electric. The staging was out of this world. The entertainment gave us a lot of choices for being entertained. The MC was encouraging. I've watched most of the Grammys since they first aired, I think in the late 50s or early 60s. Some have been better than others, which I think is pretty common for award shows. This perspective comes from a 79 year old who was in the music business and still keeps up with the many changes. I don't love all of the newest music, but I do love the effort these newer artists put into entertaining. I remember when Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" hit our turntables. I cried then and I still cried last night when she sang. There's so much more to love and appreciate than who gets the few awards each year.

by Anonymousreply 22February 6, 2024 12:12 AM

Not Gnarls Barkley, girl. BFFR!

Now I knows you all the way straight clownin up in this thread.

by Anonymousreply 23February 6, 2024 12:18 AM

Talent has nothing to do with who wins a Grammy. You said so yourself, OP

by Anonymousreply 24February 6, 2024 12:20 AM

If they didn’t give it to her after that shameless Lemonade pr campaign while being pregnant with twins, I doubt they ever will. I guess now they’re going to use people like you to help bully her way to a win. Good luck.

by Anonymousreply 25February 6, 2024 12:31 AM

Of course you didn’t mention that Dave Chappelle won for Best Comedy Album, Teacrack.

by Anonymousreply 26February 6, 2024 12:46 AM

R22 is completely full of shit.

by Anonymousreply 27February 6, 2024 12:48 AM

"This is crazy. I shouldn't be here."

No, Billie Eilish, you shouldn't. Neither should so many of the cheap-ass, classless attendees.

by Anonymousreply 28February 6, 2024 12:59 AM

Anybody care to guess this is, with 24 wins and additional 20 nominations?

1 1993 Winner Grammy, 2 1991 Winner Grammy, 3 1990 Winner Grammy, 4 1989 Winner Grammy, 5 1988 Winner Grammy, 6 1988 Winner Grammy, 7 1987 Winner Grammy, 8 1987 Winner Grammy, 9 1982 Winner Grammy, 10 1980 Winner Grammy, 11 1979 Winner Grammy, 12 1979 Winner Grammy, 13 1978 Winner Grammy, 14 1977 Winner Grammy, 15 1974 Winner Grammy, 16 1973 Winner Grammy, 17 1972 Winner Grammy, 18 1972 Winner Grammy, 19 1966 Winner Grammy, 20 1966 Winner Grammy, 21 1965 Winner Grammy, 22 1964 Winner Grammy, 23 1963 Winner Grammy, 24 1963 Winner Grammy

by Anonymousreply 29February 6, 2024 1:27 AM

... Which is apparently wrong, because other sources say 25 wins.

by Anonymousreply 30February 6, 2024 1:29 AM

I’m more of a movie buff myself, r22, and similarly I’ve been watching the Academy Awards since Janet Gaynor won Best Actress. I have to say that this year’s Oscar ceremony was absolutely boffo. A real Busby Berkeley.

by Anonymousreply 31February 6, 2024 1:33 AM

Like the music you like. I don't know and don't care if my favorite artists ever won Grammys. It doesn't change a thing for me.

by Anonymousreply 32February 6, 2024 1:45 AM

The joke is two black superstars, Jay Z and Kanye, being so petty and vulgar to insult Taylor Swift when she wins big. To do it publicly and shamelessly as if it's nothing at all. Fucking trash.

by Anonymousreply 33February 6, 2024 2:05 AM

Why do moronic people say "a whole joke?" What would be a 1/2 joke? Teafake "fonts" so ignorantly.

by Anonymousreply 34February 6, 2024 2:15 AM

R34, Sea Cow used “a whole mood”. “Whole” in these contexts must modify the noun in some manner other than using “entire”.

by Anonymousreply 35February 6, 2024 3:06 AM

Teacake talks like a magical negro written by Stephen King.

by Anonymousreply 36February 6, 2024 3:08 AM

As sister Maya used to say, when people tell you who they are, believe them.

As soon as Rebbie Jackson got completely shut out at the 1985 ceremony despite her electrifying breakout hit, Centipede — nary a nomination — I knew what the Grammys were really all about. Misogynoir, white hegemony, boots on the necks of BIPOC to misappropriate their art and property. No ma’am, I am not the one.

Don’t even get me started on Gnarls Barkley, who basically wrote this millennium’s Greensleeves only to be overlooked by a predominantly thankless and unrewarding white public.

by Anonymousreply 37February 6, 2024 3:29 AM

r37 Fonted so eloquently, Coffy Cake r37

by Anonymousreply 38February 6, 2024 3:30 AM

Just watch JayZ launch his own music awards next year and Bey will win!

by Anonymousreply 39February 6, 2024 4:02 AM

Can the Black music community please get over themselves with Taylor vs. Beyonce'??

IT'S BEEN 15 YEARS, FCS. .

Taylor Swift was such an asshole at the Grammys. She acted like a 2nd row Becky, standing up, singing along, and trying to make Tracy Chapman's performance all about Taylor, which the director and cameraman were happy to go along with. Then she bragged about how many Grammys she has, and snubbed Céline Dion, anddidn't acknowledge her fellow nominees.

Taylor Swift is an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 41February 10, 2024 10:34 PM

Not one lie was told by the OP of this thread.

by Anonymousreply 42February 10, 2024 10:43 PM

You are the OP of this thread.

by Anonymousreply 43February 10, 2024 10:46 PM

Usher deserves an AOTY like Mother Teresa deserved an AVN award for best new-comer. Stepin “teacake” Fetchit is a whole joke, an elderly rabble-rousing white troll pretending to be some sort of indignant black stenotype.

by Anonymousreply 44February 11, 2024 12:58 AM

I stopped watch the Grammy Awards a few years ago. I'm still very much into music at age 60, even a lot of new music, however 95% of what I'm into that is new is basically independent or just not mainstream. I know most of the names of the nominees, but I know only some of their actually music. Let's face it, the overwhelming majority of what is on the charts or popular today is just terrible. And even the winners I read the next day were perplexing to me. A no talent like Miley Cyrus winning over Billie Eilish for record of the year?! Boygenius winning over Arctic Monkeys for best rock performance? At least their not horrible, but come on!

by Anonymousreply 45February 11, 2024 1:49 AM

by Anonymousreply 51February 11, 2024 2:18 PM
