Oh, the humanity
King Charles III has been diagnosed with a form of cancer and will suspend his public duties to undergo treatment.
The announcement, made by Buckingham Palace on Monday evening, came a week after the 75-year-old sovereign was discharged from a London hospital, after a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate. The palace did not disclose what form of cancer he has, but said the cancer was detected during that procedure.
“During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted,” the palace said in a statement. “Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer. His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.”
“Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake state business and official paperwork as usual,” the palace continued. “The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.”

R40 I agree. Also, the fact that Harry is en route to the UK today to be with the King also makes me think the prognosis may not be good. Of course, this is just my own speculation. But given the tense relations between the Palace and the Harkles over the past few years, I have to think that if this were a cancer caught early enough and with good treatment prospects, Harry may not be rushing back and flying through the awful California storm today. Santa Barbara, Ventura, and LA are all getting battered today.

In addition to the stress of whatever his diagnosis is, he now has to worry about what he does disclose to Harry being repeated to Meghan who will in turn make sure it gets put in the media via Omid or someone else.
And on top of that, if he wants to see his phantom American grandchildren that means Meghan coming along because she won't let those kids go to the UK without her for fear of them not being returned.

[quote] There is a constitutional mechanism for when the head of state is unable to carry out official duties - in that circumstance "counsellors of state" can be appointed to stand in for the monarch. At present that includes Queen Camilla, Prince William, Princess Anne and Prince Edward, with Prince Harry and Prince Andrew no longer to be called on as non-working royals.
Oh that's why they recently turfed Andrew and Harry out of the role. Wasn't that before he went in for the check though? Wonder if they'd had an inkling it was more serious than an enlarged prostate beforehand
by Anonymous | reply 77 | February 5, 2024 7:03 PM |
All jokes aside, the fact that the palace is not telling us what type of cancer or the prognosis is very concerning. To me it's a read between the lines sort of thing of this not being very good news at all. If it was a good prognosis, I think the announcement would've been more upbeat. I am not much of a fan of Charles but this has actually kind of tugged at my heart strings a bit. I had hoped he'd get a least a good decade on the throne after waiting so long, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Don't think its necessarily as worrying as all that. Its just a general press announcement to forestall any questions about why he's not going to be around much while they treat it. With Liz's leukemia they could just use age and semi retirement as an excuse and keep it hidden from the public. They're already being more open with his health reports than any other monarch in history. Hell when George III started going nuts they didn't even tell the PM.

Thank goodness kings no longer run the British army because Charles would probably mess that up as well.

There have been signs for months that Harry has wanted to mend fences with the RF, including that weird video H&M made of their children to show Charles on his birthday. If a reconciliation doesn’t happen after this news, it probably never will.
Of course, I am cynical enough to think that H&M may also be slightly concerned that William may sadly find himself promoted rather sooner that they anticipated. He is unlikely to put up with their bullshit, or write cheques as freely as Charles.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | February 5, 2024 7:38 PM |
If it’s bladder cancer, it is treatable but also hard to diagnose correctly what type of bladder cancer it is. Sometimes it could be two or more types of bladder cancer going on at the same time. The chance of it coming back is also high and aggressive.

R118 my guess is that when they shaved his prostate they took a routine biopsy and found it. At least I hope t hat's what happened and that it is just the prostate. If it is the bladder or other soft tissue, it could be a problem. I like Charles. And honestly he has already proven himself as a very good King, doing a lot more that shitface Prime Minister. Asshole is supposed to call for elections b ut he won't because he is so intensely disliked for his incompetence, and the Tories are trying to destroy the NHS so they can privatize everything. But the PM is hoping if he can't get the voters to like him a little more then maybe he can get t hem to hate him a little less.

by Anonymous | reply 123 | February 5, 2024 7:52 PM |
That’s what I was going to say, r120. It just sounds not great. Normally (yes, I’m a DL fake-doctor!), I thought surgery was performed first, to try and remove as much tumor as possible. Then chemo follows, to catch any remaining cancer cells. Chemo first is more dire, they’re trying to shrink the tumor because it can’t be removed.

I’ll play devil’s advocate for a minute. The palace says a separate issue was found besides the treatment for an enlarged prostate. Could they mean a separate issue from the ENLARGED prostate? Meaning that he was having his prostate shaved, and they found cancer there, which is sort of a separate issue. It’s really parsing the sentence, but they didn’t give us a lot to go on.

No r124, chemo is performed first to reduce the tumour as much as possible before surgery to remove it.
We have r122 who hasn't even bothered to read the previous posts or any news articles, now r124 making wildly inaccurate guesses as to cancer treatment and getting it completely wrong.
[quote]Before surgery or radiotherapy
[quote]The aim of chemotherapy before surgery is to shrink a tumour. This might mean:
[quote]you need less surgery
[quote]it is easier to get all the cancer out
[quote]you can have radiotherapy to a smaller area of your body

Actually radiation reduces the tumor and then chemo kills the cells which helps to avoid the spread. My dad went through it. And they have new procedures now with prostates wherer they can put radiation seeds up there to burn it out. Lots of different treatments now. Things aren't done the way they were 10 years ago.

“During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted,” the palace said in a statement. “Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer. “
Not sure what article you’re referring to that says it’s not prostate cancer, but the palace statement can be construed a couple of different ways. So please keep your comments on reading comprehension to yourself.

R144, you are right. Immunotherapy is the same I think. In any event, it is typically tiring to some degree beyond usual for a patient's age and appetite is seldom what it was. My brother in law did a round of chemo/immuno last fall and while it wasn't a horror show, it wasn't easy on him either. He's 75 as well.

WTF is William going to do if Charles dies in the next year and. Kate’s health doesn’t allow her to do much?
I’m now thinking that a lot of the stuff about how Kate and William prioritize a normal family life for the kids was, while probably true, also a way to set expectation low in terms of their schedules. So if Kate’s health has gotten worse, she’s not likely to start doing more, is she? What’s the long term prognosis for IBD severe enough to require surgery at 42 (assuming that’s what it is)?
And if Charles is gone, will Camilla feel motivated to spend the next decade or so smiling and shaking strangers’ hands?

Edward and Sophie. Anne. Kate will be back before long. William is already attending an investiture in Wednesday.
I think the odds of Bea and Eugenie being drafted in are getting better. Both have niceish husbands, and already have charitable interests. I think some charities may be offered Bea or Eugenie as a royal patron on a take-it-it-leave-it basis. There are hundreds of charities which were supported by the late Queen and Prince Philip and which are still waiting to hear if they will get anotherroyal patron.
Less likely (but not impossible) is that Zara and Mike Tindall could begin to play a role. William likes them both and they both spend time in Australia, which is a Realm which Charles is supposed to visit soon. It’s not likely, but I wouldn’t rule it out.

Even when it's treatable, it's still scary when your parent randomly calls you with that kind of news. Plus, there seems to be evidence that he's been looking for some way back (or at least isn't really happy with his current life). Whatever the case, it's Camilla holding down the fort in the short term & I'd love to see how she reacts to Harry's return

My husband goes to the Dr every 3 months and still came up with bladder cancer last year. It showed in his urine. He's also had an enlarged prostate for several years with a potential fix (clip or steam to to reduce the size) on the back burner if he chooses to go ahead with it. Maybe Charles scheduled his prostate fix for after the Christmas holidays and then this came up. Because Charles is well looked cared for, I'm sure any cancer found will be early stage. Just hope it's something like that and not blood cancer. Feel awful for the family. What a shitload of bad luck for several of them.
Eug and Bea should be recruited. All the sympathy for the family can used to their advantage. And of course, they have a lot of extra sympathy because of who their father is. "Those poor girls, it's not their fault that Andrew is their father".

R223, the news had barely broken when Harry announced he was flying back as soon as possible! Because that's the most important development!
In fact, his flying back so quickly is worse for the general public because it makes it seem as though Charles is on the brink of death and Harry has to get here as soon as he can otherwise he might not make it. Harry - if he had to say something, which is debatable - could simply, perhaps the next day or day after, have instructed his sources to tell his favourite outlets something like "The Duke has been informed of his father's diagnosis and wishes him all the best for his treatment. The Duke will be making arrangements to visit his father in the coming days."

This really kicked me in the gut for some godforsaken reason.
It was sad when the Queen died, but she had a good, long life and reign. Here, this man's been waiting his whole life and now this. My Dad died from bile duct cancer at 71. That was too early. Maybe I thought of my own father when I read about Charles today. My heart truly goes out to him.
And I'm glad his estranged son is flying back. His wife should accompany him. And they should keep their whiny, entitled mouths shut. "staying behind with their children" is no excuse. My own mother accompanied my father on business trips when necessary when my siblings and I were younger. A week away won't matter in the long run.

Exactly, r235, Charles isn't on the brin of death, which is why it's so questionable that Harry had to announce - barely half an hour after the news had been made public - that he was flying in as soon as possible. It makes it all sound so dramatic, as though Charles is about to drop dead.

Yes, cancer can sneak up on you. But, one presumes that Charles was having regular check ups and unlikely to get to stage 4 without it being detected, so it could be at an early stage.
Even with stage 4 cancer you can still live for several years.

[quote]Some people find out they have stage 4 cancer during a routine doctor's appointment. It sneaks up on you.
And cancer doesn't care about anyone's privilege. The best doctors in the world still lose patients. If it was discovered during a transurethral resection of the prostate, it invites the question of whether he's been symptomatic for a while and it all got lumped in with the prostate (no pun intended).

A urologist on Reddit thinks it’s bladder cancer based on symptoms.
by Anonymous | reply 260 | February 5, 2024 10:14 PM |
R250, you obviously haven't seen people die of cancer. For a very old person like the Queen cancer is just one of the many ailments they can get when they are old and their body is disintegrating. She didn't die because she had cancer, but she got cancer because she is old. The body just packs up.
There are almost no cancers where you get the diagnosis and a few days later you're dead. Charles was out and about yesterday and most certainly has regular check ups, so he's not at the point of death and it's likely that whatever he has is at an early stage. Even if he was at stage 4 and shitting blood he would still have time left.
Harry is not jumping on a plane as soon as he can, but he's coming in a few days. If Charles literally had days left, he would chartering a private plane immediately. So, no, Charles isn't on the brink of death, but Harry still feels the need to dramatically insert himself into the news cycle.
by Anonymous | reply 261 | February 5, 2024 10:15 PM |
What symptoms?
by Anonymous | reply 262 | February 5, 2024 10:15 PM |
That's great r254, but why does he have to release his statement within an hour of the news of Charles' cancer being made public? Why be so dramatic? He could simply have waited a day or two and say something more low key like "I spoke to my father earlier and he told me the news. I wish him well with his treatment and will make arrangements to visit as soon as possible".
by Anonymous | reply 263 | February 5, 2024 10:17 PM |
Harry is not “dramatically inserting himself into the news cycle.” His not visiting his father would be bigger news than his popping over.

I don’t think George’s life is in any danger. Charlotte seems quite fond of him. However, I do see for him a quiet, private life out of the public eye. Perhaps a suite at the Tower of London. We might see him strolling the grounds every now and then. Perhaps a lonely wave.

The King has been an advocate of homeopathy all his life, and appointed an advocate of homeopathy to be head of the Royal Medical Household.
I hope someone close to Charles took advantage of his recent hospitalisation to rid the Palace of every trace of this dangerous nonsense.
by Anonymous | reply 267 | February 5, 2024 10:23 PM |
Are you that dense, r264? Sure, Harry should visit his father (the one he was being derogatory about in public just a couple of weeks ago). The issue is the way he has announced it, which actually gives the impression that Charles' condition is much worse than it likely is.
On the issue of supposedly caring about his father, didn't it ever occur to him during all his public slandering and his great break with his family that this would happen one day? Charles is 75. Say Charles didn't have cancer and he lived until the age of 83, would Harry never have seen him in all that time? Would he have remained estranged, while continuing to make the occasional snide comment about his father and brother? Is he at least now going to allow his children to have a relationship with their grandfather?

The story was that Harry was frequently calling the Queen during her last days. She always took his calls and he was asking for money. She supposedly told him to ask his father and Harry told her that his father would not take his calls.
When asked why, Charles told his mother "I am not a bank."
Perhaps Harry is worried that the bank of Charles which has been closed, might close permanently before he (Harry) manages to snare some cash.
It seems unlikely that the future Bank of William will look kindly on the California teller of tales (and his wife).

I actually think the opposite is true.
If it was serious enough for him to be checked into the hospital, then he may have been experiencing symptoms as a result of his cancer.
Many people say they went to the doctor for flu-like symptoms, and said they had cancer.
When something is not right with a person's body, it could be anything. That's why we're supposed to go in for annual physical examinations. So if the doctor does find something unusual, they can catch it early.

You know r138, that’s an interesting thought. Perhaps they thought the issue was his prostate, but went in and found it was cancer and not his prostate. A high PSA level would have given the doctors some inkling beforehand re prostate issues, you’d think he gets that regularly checked though as part of blood work.
by Anonymous | reply 339 | February 6, 2024 4:32 AM |
Camilla isn't that good of an actress. If Charles were terminal she'd show the stress of it, R338. I think he has been expressing symptoms for a while. Maybe even months and she finally persuaded him to get it checked out. Lots of men have problems peeing at his age and it is usually the prostate. So they went in for the procedure and the Doctors were very thorough and they found something else. I'm guessing his blood work showed some abnormalities. Or they may have done some kind of scan or something. Since it seems obvious he is getting chemo, and they have to discuss what kind of drugs he will be getting and how much and how often, etc. this has happened rather fast. I think it is something that hasbeen brewing and discussed for possibly a few weeks. He went in for the prostate, but I bet he also had some kind of biopsy to confirm what doctors suspected.

R331, Harry isn't being opportunistic in coming straight over (he is being hypocritical, though), the problem is how he announced it, almost straight after it was announced that Charles had cancer and in a way that ups the drama and makes it appear Charles has very little time left. Sunak will be in weekly (at least) contact with The King. During an election year, when the PM will be out and about even more than usual. The KIng's health will hover around every single media encounter. The world will interpret Sunak's every word on the topic - or lack of words - with the acuity of Bletchley Park codebreakers. A fraught situation.

Given how cooperative the press was wrt Kate’s illness, I think Charles is definitely a goner and they just aren’t stating it outright. My parents both had various cancers requiring surgery and chemo - my dad once and my mom had three three different kinds. They survived and died of other things years later. Nobody jumped on a plane the same day, and we all liked each other! It obviously wasn’t “no big deal,” but everybody got on with it.
Friends, uncles, neighbors - same thing. Fergie’s announced cancer twice in the last year. Granted, it’s Fergie, but still. I have one friend who got a very bad diagnosis and that was a different story. An exec at my firm recently has to make an announcement and the sense was that his situation might be very serious. But that’s two out of a dozen. The reaction to this and the failure to state the type of cancer point towards something bad.

The thing is, Harry doesn't respect anybody else. He does as he pleases. So I don't necessarily read much into this because he's impulsive and self-serving. He may be worried. It is as likely the two of them cooked up some scheme to create a new platform to whine about how badly they're being treated when they're only trying to care. It may be he's worried and grandstanding. Watch the leaks, post-visit. It's not unreasonable to imagine he will complain about how frosty the reception, but that's what happens when no one feels they can trust you because you sell people out for money.
by Anonymous | reply 378 | February 6, 2024 2:00 PM |
My guess is it's like any cancer: they undertake the first round of treatment, whatever form it takes, and then assess the prognosis. If he's a goner after the first go, then they likely will confirm publicly what kind of cancer it is and the next steps, but might not say he's a goner. They've kind of smashed the cone of silence precedent. It looks like the new approach is phases of disclosure.
by Anonymous | reply 379 | February 6, 2024 2:04 PM |
Harry jumped on a plane so he can go and collect a new set of grievances he can air for profit when his father passes away whether that happens in the near future or down the road.
by Anonymous | reply 380 | February 6, 2024 2:09 PM |
I'm not sure there really was a cone of silence, r379. Queen Elizabeth Philip, the Queen Mother all lived long, healthy lives, anyone seeking "disclosure" as to what ailment a 96 year old or a 99 year old might have is being a bit silly. It's not as though they had cancer and it would also be very difficult for Charles to cover up the fact that he is undergoing something like cancer treatment. The only royal in recent times to have had particularly bad health is Margaret, and her various ailments and accidents were publicly disclosed, even though she lived a mostly private life.
The real concealment was with Charles's grandfather, King George VI, when his own doctors didn't tell him he had lung cancer even after they'd hacked half of his lung out. But that may have been standard for his era.
by Anonymous | reply 381 | February 6, 2024 2:13 PM |
To add at r381: yes, the Queen died, among other things, of bone cancer. I mean, it's not as though when in her earlier years (her 70s and 80s...) and she was still very active and out and about that she came down with cancer and then disappeared for a few months and there was complete silence from the Palace as to where she was and what had happened to her.

Regarding Queen Elizabeth having bone cancer - My mom apparently had bone cancer in her late 90’s and when we found out we were like, wtf, isn’t that incredible painful? But it wasn’t. She was never treated for it. She basically just died of old age pushing 100. Like QE. So I don’t think they were really hiding QE’s bone cancer. It was irrelevant.

King Charles and Queen Camilla have left Clarence House after a brief reunion with the Duke of Sussex.
The monarch left the royal residence around 45 minutes after his younger son had arrived there, following an overnight flight from Los Angeles to Heathrow.
Father and son are thought to have enjoyed a short private meeting before the monarch made his way to Sandringham, Norfolk.
The King left Clarence House at around half past three, sweeping out of the gates in his burgundy Bentley State Limousine with the Queen, accompanied by a police escort.
“He’ll wave if you give him a wave,” one of the police officers lining the exit told well-wishers who had gathered to watch. Charles complied, smiling and waving in his first public sighting since his cancer diagnosis.
His son departed Clarence House for Buckingham Palace a few minutes earlier in a black 4x4.
earlier:
3:21PM Prince Harry arrives at Clarence House The Duke of Sussex has arrived at Clarence House ahead of an anticipated reunion with the King.
He was photographed being driven into the gates of the King’s London residence at around 2.45pm.
Father and son are expected to catch up behind closed doors this afternoon before the King returns to Sandringham by helicopter.
The Duke flew from Los Angeles to London’s Heathrow overnight, landing at around 12.30pm. He was whisked out of the airport in a Range Rover, accompanied by a marked police escort, and driven straight to Clarence House, where his father has been recovering from his first bout of cancer treatment on Monday.
The pair have not seen each other since the Coronation, when they are not thought to have spent any notable time together. The Duke is understood to have booked a flight as soon as his father called him to tell him of his cancer diagnosis.
It is not yet known whether the Duke will accompany his father to Norfolk or remain in London. He is not believed to have made any plans to see his brother, the Prince of Wales, with whom he has not spoken for months.

R452 Of course they are going to say that. Everyone says that. Everyone I know who died from lung cancer initially said they caught it early, it was as small as a grain of rice, it’s treatable. Some cancers are so aggressive that it really doesn’t matter if it was caught early. Early detection may but a few months. Other cancers are curable if caught early. We don’t know but I would pay no heed to anyone saying it was caught early. They also said the Queen was fine when she looked like a walking corpse and they said she was ill when she was dead.

R470, Charles gave Harry barely 30 minutes then he left to go to Buckingham Palace to take a helicopter to Sandringham with Camilla. Harry was spotted a little later being driven to Buckingham Palace himself. Charles did whatever he could to spend as little time with Harry as possible and made sure that there were no photos of him and Harry driving up to Buckingham Palace. For Charles to take such measures to protect himself from Harry suggests Harry's behaviour behind the scenes all these years must have been unbearable and what we've seen in public if just the tip of the iceberg.

Depends. My mom was in hospice and didn't want her mother (my grandma) to be let into her room. When my mom was just about to die, my grandma made a scene and my mom's sisters allowed her into the room.
Was I happy about that? No.

No way at all that Charles would give the tabloids that banquet of an image. It would serve only Harry. The worst image possible with William stepping up his duties publicly, while also mindful of his recuperating wife.

Why would Harry be going to Buckingham Palace? The King and Queen drove there to board his helicopter for the flight to Sandringham. Harry was probably on Expedia, trawling for a cheap rate on a junior suite for the night.qaa

British monarchs don't actually "rule" because they have no ruling authority. Rather, they reign.

R512. I don’t enjoy clucking at them. The original post improperly correcting me included a ridiculous “Google is your friend” response so I’m in no mood to help.
The misuse of “rule” is not just a minor point of usage. It’s a gross mischaracterization. It would be insulting and wrong to say even that America, where the president has substantive power and where I assume these mistaken posters are from, is “ruled” by President Biden. Edward VII mo more ruled the United Kingdom than Theodore Roosevelt ruled the US. The term “ruled” is really only appropriate to dictatorships or absolute monarchies. The UK is neither and was neither even in 1901.

I’ve always sensed that William, out of the public eye, in private moments, can be a cold one.
Setting aside whether Markle is unlikable (which I find her to be) if there is one thing that I can be sympathetic to her about it’s that it’s been obvious for a long time William, plain and simple, just dislikes her, and would even if she had never met Harry.
Seriously, that had to have been a very uncomfortable situation for her and due me if you don’t like that acknowledged.
But I admire William from how I’ve seen him handle himself and others when he’s publicly on duty.
He’s engaged, polished, attentive, and you can ridicule his bald head all you want to, but being slim, 6 ‘2’ , the next King of the UK and Commonwealth realms and rich, to boot, seems to me one can do without a head of hair.

I think William's hair is fine given his role. If he were to start wearing hairpieces or have a transplant at this stage, after being seen for years with his current hairline, it would be all anyone talked about. He's very fit and keeps his hair short and he looks absolutely fine. He's not a Hollywood star who needs to have regular upkeep with fillers and wigs (see: Cruise, Tom).

by Anonymous | reply 570 | February 8, 2024 3:42 PM |
The problem with William's appearance is that he has a very long face and the shape of his skull amplifies it- like the shape of a pill. His hair used to cut it by a third. Even if he shaved the rest off, he wouldn't be all that more attractive because the shape of his skull.

Personally I think he photographs very well. I even think his haircut is just fine for what's available. I do believe though that he could dress a bit better. His suits are usually very bland looking. I understand that he wants his apparel to look conservative (even though I don't think it needs to be). But there is good conservative and bland conservative. A little bit more fitting wouldn't be a bad idea. And show more bold colors every now and then. He plays it too safe, imho.

r573, how can we know? They've released no details other than it's not prostate cancer.
by Anonymous | reply 574 | February 8, 2024 4:33 PM |
All I know is what the doctors have said to me about my Dad. Elderly people, like people over 75, cancer develops slowly. My father was 82 when they found prostate cancer. He had so many other health issues, the doctors said he'd probably die of something else before the cancer got him. And he did. He had a massive stroke when he was 87.
by Anonymous | reply 575 | February 8, 2024 4:37 PM |
r573 I'm leaning towards not so serious. I think if he was actually dying they'd have kept it secret for as long as possible so they they could rush forward with preparations for the funeral and William getting ready to be king. While if its not so serious they can just make general press announcements for openness with no worry.
by Anonymous | reply 576 | February 8, 2024 4:41 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 581 | February 8, 2024 5:11 PM |
r577 Why would they? He made an announcement about his prostate to encourage other men to get checked (it apparently worked the NHS reported an increase in men coming forward) he made an announcement about his cancer to explain why he's probably going to lose his hair and not be seen in public for awhile. Beyond that he's head of an extremely private organisation that hid every one of Liz's health issues and won't reveal them for a century that's slowly trying to be more open to fit in the modern world. Not an Instaho who's going to be storying his treatment.

To force people who are born into a role without any choice on their part to give up all of their privacy when there is no compelling interest to do so serves no purpose.
