Who do you think is the great French actor?
Who is the great French actor?

Suzanne Pleshette of course!

Michael Lonsdale has the most diversity:
The Day of the Jackal, Moonraker, Chariots of Fire, The Name of the Rose, The Remains of the Day, Jefferson in Paris, and Of Gods and Men.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 3, 2024 5:17 PM |
Lean Gabin.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 3, 2024 5:20 PM |
^ Jean Gabin. Sorry.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 3, 2024 5:21 PM |
Jean-Louis Trintignant
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 3, 2024 5:22 PM |
Another vote for the great Trintignant.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 3, 2024 5:23 PM |
"The great" French actor? Just the one? France has only enjoyed one great actor?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 3, 2024 5:33 PM |
Well we know who the prettiest one is.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 3, 2024 5:35 PM |
Lilyan Chauvn
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 3, 2024 5:38 PM |
Jerry Lewis
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 3, 2024 5:40 PM |
Truffaut is a head-scratcher.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 3, 2024 5:41 PM |
R11 Truffaut isn't a head-scratcher. He's there because OP is a moron who can't even manage basic comparative-superlative English syntax. But don't let that stop him diving into French Cinema, naturellement.

I chose Louis Jourdan, not because I think he’s any great shakes as an actor, but because the first time I ever saw him onscreen, in Three Coins In The Fountain, I was mesmerized by his beauty. Since I’m so shallow, if I were a lake and you fell face down in me you wouldn’t drown, you can’t really go by me.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 3, 2024 5:48 PM |
Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard are the greatest actors of all time.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 3, 2024 5:51 PM |
Tangent: Louis's father was eventually director of the Grand Hôtel on the Croisette in Cannes.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 3, 2024 5:54 PM |
Truffaut did act, too, you know.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 3, 2024 5:55 PM |
Yes, but not always successfully. I think his performances in THE GREEN ROOM and, to a lesser degree, THE WILD CHILD hurt the films as he is a rather lightweight screen presence.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 3, 2024 6:16 PM |
Jean-Pierre Leaud gets my vote - truly outstanding in The Four Hundred Blows. His other work is also first-rate.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 3, 2024 6:20 PM |
Nino Castelnuovo was gorgeous and unforgettable in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, but he was Italian.
Born in Italy. Died in Italy. Did most of his work in Italy.

I just started 'Breathless' for the first time so I'll vote for Belmondo. He's very funny.
Googling these actors and notice how long-lived they all are.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 3, 2024 6:46 PM |
Jean Gabin, Eddie Constantine?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 3, 2024 6:49 PM |
Marcel Dalio
by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 3, 2024 6:56 PM |
Michael Lonsdale was one of the best Bond baddies. He was also really good for the twelve seconds that he was in Smiley's People.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 3, 2024 7:02 PM |
Phillippe Noiret.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 3, 2024 7:06 PM |
Hi R22! Come sit next to me!

What about Jean Gabin?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 4, 2024 12:20 AM |
Moliere, of course.
Euh.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | February 4, 2024 12:22 AM |
Michel Bouquet
by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 4, 2024 12:53 AM |
Alain Delon
by Anonymous | reply 40 | February 4, 2024 2:47 AM |
I'm with R21. Gérard Philipe's contrasting light and dark performances in "Lovers of Paris" and "The Proud and the Beautiful" are among the best I've seen.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | February 4, 2024 5:40 AM |
Joaquin Phoenix

Qu'est-ce que je suis, du foie haché aussi ?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 4, 2024 5:46 AM |
if the question is about great actor vs great movie star, then R2 is right: Michael Lonsdale. Few better in any language.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 4, 2024 5:48 AM |
Mathew Cassovitz
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 4, 2024 6:09 AM |
Another vote for Gaspard Ulliel. I would give him 400 Blows, avec plaisir.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 4, 2024 6:53 AM |
Francois Sagat
by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 4, 2024 3:32 PM |
Vincent Cassel
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 4, 2024 3:46 PM |
R51, he looks like Hunter Biden...
by Anonymous | reply 52 | February 4, 2024 4:31 PM |
More fun game- name a French actor who hasn't been with either Catherine Deneuve or Brigitte Bardot.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | February 4, 2024 4:40 PM |
R53.... umm, any actor younger than 50?
by Anonymous | reply 54 | February 4, 2024 5:01 PM |
"been with"?
by Anonymous | reply 55 | February 4, 2024 5:09 PM |
Surprised no mention of Michel Piccoli. Fantastic character actor, worked with every major French actress and auteur.
Jean-Paul Belmondo kind of dented the perception of his talent by spending the second half of his career coasting in Eurotrash action films but he was magnificent in serious/arthouse roles. I'd have liked to see him on stage at one point. His main rival Alain Delon was a non-actor pretty boy.
Jean Gabin and Jean-Louis Trintignant are great as well. Michael Lonsdale is a good pick too.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | February 5, 2024 4:49 PM |
You'll need a shovel first, r47.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | February 5, 2024 5:00 PM |
I do find it interesting people tend to remember more French actresses more than they do actors. Especially the actresses of the mid-late 20th century.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | February 5, 2024 5:07 PM |
I think mainly because there are better french actresses than french actor, r58, as the list of the OP and the answers to this thread shows.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | February 5, 2024 5:22 PM |
I know, r57. But wasn't Gaspard beautiful? (And hung?)
