At 2-2 in the 5th set, Zverev cracks and misses some routine shots to get broken. Will be interesting to see if he can recover from that.

Did anyone catch his Instagram clip about relocating his meditative pre-work ritual to the park after a man in a Speedo tried to befriend him at the sauna? I gave him a little shit in the comments, replying that he's quite straight if he doesn't realize friendly almost-naked men are also at the park. I think he's lovely. He's 30 - 28 in this pic - not sure where you're getting that he looks older than his age. Looks typical late 20s/early 30s to me.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 27, 2024 6:29 AM |
No, r32, youâre not the only one. Iâm also rooting for Zheng. Her game is slightly more âarticulatedâ than SabalenkaâsâI find it a lot more watchable.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 27, 2024 8:21 AM |
I'm hoping for a Zheng win. She seems like a sweet person, and I tend to root for the underdog.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 27, 2024 8:25 AM |
Sabalenka has a better serve, hits harder and a better forehand. Zheng better movement and better mental strength but she had three setters against three players in the tournament (and they were not strong players) while Sabalenka has not dropped a set plus has played seeds. A lot depends on how Sabalenka plays and whether she chokes.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 27, 2024 8:50 AM |
And, r42, a lot depends on how Zhengâs forehand holds up. And that, unfortunately, is not looking good.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 27, 2024 9:03 AM |
The only other time they have played was the US Open QFs which Sabalenka won 6-1 6-4.

I feel so bad for Zheng. She had no chance. But she was SO lovely in her acceptance speech. I was quite charmed.
Saba is now the best player on the tour. At least on hard courts. When she serves like she did this entire tourney? She can't be beat.

R47 I used to think Sinner was bland, but having listened to him in interviews over the past year he's really grown on me: he's grounded, humble, with a quite dry self-deprecating sense of humour. I'm probably never going to be fan, but out of the current top 10, I find him pretty likeable in comparison to most.

Is Sinner adopted? His brother looks nothing like him, and looks Asian
by Anonymous | reply 70 | January 27, 2024 11:51 PM |
Sinner is the one who looks like his parents, so I doubt it. Perhaps the brother is the one who was adopted, the mother had a secret affair or genes are just strange!

A Reddit thread about it. The Berrettini brothers also don't look alike.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | January 27, 2024 11:56 PM |
The Berrettini brothers I can get but the Sinner siblings are definitely off.
Sinner could have been a skiier - "he was one of Italy's top junior skiers from eight to twelve years old, winning a national championship in giant slalom at age eight and earning a national runner-up at the age of twelve". There's a lot more money in tennis though.

by Anonymous | reply 76 | January 28, 2024 12:21 AM |
I just thought of another option - Sinner's brother looks like alternatively he could have Italian genes - the olive skin tone and dark hair - from a parent (both of Sinner's parents are ethnically German). So possibly he is a child from a previous relationship before Sinner's parents got together.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | January 28, 2024 12:22 AM |
Or maybe they were both adopted.

Medvedev plays a storming first set, breaking Sinner twice. A tactical masterclass. Jannik's looking Ng shell-shocked.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | January 28, 2024 9:30 AM |
God. Med destroyed him in that first set. I had a feeling.
First, Med has played in five finals against Rafa and Novak each time. He finally is free of both. And is motivated to finally win his second.
Second, Sinner just took out Goliath and is in his first slam. A letdown was almost inevitable.
I like both so don't care who ends up winning. But I'm not surprised by this result so far.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | January 28, 2024 9:49 AM |
Sinner is certainly NOT giving us the Finals we deserve!!
Booo
by Anonymous | reply 90 | January 28, 2024 10:15 AM |
Thank god he took a set. Didn't want another damp squib final.
I still remember watching that crazy Med-Nadal AO final where it looked like Med was going to win being up two sets and something like a break so I'm not ruling out something nuts like that happening again.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | January 28, 2024 11:00 AM |
R91 I keep thinking about that too. Obviously, Sinner isn't Rafa. But who knows?
As to the match itself, Sinner finally showed up. End of the third he started to look like the Sinner who just beat Novaxx.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | January 28, 2024 11:05 AM |
I'm thinking that Med gets a bit tired - he has a very labor intensive style of playing and isn't hitting as hard, a bit more pushing now.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | January 28, 2024 11:40 AM |
FIFTH SET. Oh my god. And you have to give Sinner the edge for it but we'll see.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | January 28, 2024 11:54 AM |
Sinner levels up and has the momentum.
Could be a thrilling 5th set!
by Anonymous | reply 95 | January 28, 2024 11:54 AM |
At the outset of the match I was rooting for Sinner. But now Iâm torn because I donât want Medvedev to lose another Aussie final after being up by two sets. According to Chris Fowler, no one has ever lost two Major finals (let alone two Aussie finals) after being up by two sets.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | January 28, 2024 12:11 PM |

Murray's career has been over for a long time. I think he retired and got bored, realised he had nothing else he was especially good at and so tried to play tennis again. Same thing with Wozniacki, Osaka..

R142, Mmoh is one of the players I follow intently, not because I think he has high prospects, but I guess more because he's my sometimes pretend boyfriend.
Actually, there are several players I follow here and there in the top 300 just so I can see their progress, if any. Of course, I think they have to be attractive to me in some way--I'm not THAT much of a tennis nerd. Since last summer's US OPEN qualifying, for example, I watched blond hunk Aiden Mayo progress to the final round. I started to follow him and watched him progress into the fall to the point of being a leading contender for the AO American wildcard spot. He derailed fast. I think he's lost about six or seven straight matches going back to last year.
His last matches though are kind of ugly, not his tight shirt clinging to him, but rather his loud, distracting commentary, sometimes spiced with a racket toss or break. At his current rate, I might start focusing on other players in that range.

I remember that our beloved and unshakable Genie, if you consider her hand is unshakable for the opponent, because she doesn't believe in shaking her opponent's hand, let alone say her name in pressers, is turning 30 in a couple of weeks. And her incredible successive runs at the Aus Open, RG and Wimbledon happened just 10 years ago.
I know a lot of you under the guise of Chrissie (which I hope will recover swiftly from her ovary cancer setback) would have loved to pencil her into many other slam finals, but it's not like she still plays tennis. She switched to pickleball and my understanding is that she has yet to win a single match. Oh the Eugenity!!! And when will daddy finally see his money back? Worst investment of his career...

"Felix finally learned to close after losing his first nine finals, then taking the next five in '22 and '23. But he's wobbled for the last eighteen months or so. I wonder what's caused the doldrums."
He's definitely gotten better and poor closing doesn't rear it's head as much with FAA, but I wouldn't say he's "cured." It's like when Novotna would get tight and choke some big matches. She finally wins Wimbledon and people declare that she's over it, but later that same year, she choked her semi vs. Hingis at the USO.
It's hard to gauge how good FAA is doing right now. After his slump last year, he miraculously rebounds and wins a tournament at the end of last season, but then he didn't do anything at the AO. Will be interesting to see if he can do something "big" this year - deep Slam and/or Masters run(s), even just winning more 500s.

by Anonymous | reply 318 | February 11, 2024 9:08 PM |
Spanish speakers would probably say Hee-ron (with a pretty short "o"), but he's American, so I wonder what the Americanized pronunciation is (if different). Like what did the kids where he grew up in Cali say?
by Anonymous | reply 319 | February 11, 2024 9:14 PM |
The commentators I hear are all saying 'Gee-rone' with the G being a 'hard' G as is 'goat' I'm guessing that's how Marcos, himself, pronounces it.

by Anonymous | reply 338 | February 12, 2024 2:14 AM |
The rankings are mostly about how players have done over the last year so if players continue their slumps, the points will soon come off.
For example, Muchova in the last year: SF in the US Open, Final in Cincinnati, Final of Roland Garros, QF of Indian Wells, QF of Dubai. She's a good player, just prone to injury and doesn't play a lot of tournaments.
by Anonymous | reply 339 | February 12, 2024 2:16 AM |
No, I don't find it confusing. Because of how the ranking system works, there can be fairly big disparities in ranking vs. the current form of a player. Certainly there's many instances where ranking and form match, but it's not unusual for them not to.
Muchova has huge points from her French Open final and US Open semi final in 2023. Those points haven't come off yet.
Chris Eubanks after winning Mallorca and then making the Wimbledon quarterfinals was right around 30. He's essentially done nothing since (a few first round wins here and there), yet he's still around 35. His high ranking (for him) was largely built on Mallorca and Wimbledon and his Miami QF last year. And none of those points have come off.

Rapper and dilettante tennis player Corentin Moutet using every gamesmanship trick in the book to try to eke out a win: interrupting his opponent, Mariano Navone, in the middle of his serve (Justine made me do it!), contesting any and every decision of the chair empire, flexing himself when he's supposed to have been serving for half a minute, abusing the clock at changes of end, leaving the court, speaking and shrieking in the middle of a point, asking a maxi bottle of Pepsi, shamelessly plugging the brand to everyone in the public, then spilling the content of said bottle near the service lines to slow the serves of his opponent (they're playing on clay) and to help his own drop shots, serving underhanded, serving with regular forehands, serving with regular backhands, pretending to be injured, crying, chanting, raging, you name it, he did it. An 18-year-old Romanian player has told a Romanian outlet that she attended the Mouratoglou Academy from 12-years-old and they get given PEDs by physical trainers and doctors. She says that players and parents have to agree to take the substance by signing a paper.
I think it's kind of obvious reading in between the lines that Halep wants to blame Mouratoglou but if she signed an agreement she's not going to be able to come out and say it because he'll have that showing that she knew what she was taking and that she agreed to it..

"The AO is considering switching the women's and men's final days - the reasoning is that men's matches go on for longer and people have to work the next day. Though, wouldn't that mean the men get less resting time before the final?"
If the schedule stayed the same, yes. But they could alter the overall tournament schedule. For example, they now start on Sunday. Generally, they play one half of the draw (for men and women) one day, followed by the other half the next day for most of the tournament - to the best of their ability; weather can fuck it up. At some point, the two halves get unequal rest - usually between the QFs and SFs - where players from one half will get two days rest before the SF, the other half only one day.
They could just have the first Sunday be all men. I don't think they could get through all 64 matches, but combined with the second day of play, they could, in theory, get through the men's first round. And from there they could probably get it so that they're on the current women's schedule so that they'd play the men's semis on Thursday of the second week, followed by the final on Saturday.
The "people back to work" thing wouldn't be as big of a deal if they played a daytime final. But, they've moved it to night for a number of years; I assume for better ratings.

I noticed Halap mentioned above. If it hasn't already been mentioned; she's also suing some "health supplement" company for not disclosing that there was the banned substance in her supplement, or that they allowed the banned substance to cross-contaminate the supplement she took.
With how firm of a stance they've took with Halap, she seems like she's just grasping at straws. But who knows.
by Anonymous | reply 432 | February 16, 2024 5:54 PM |
One extra note to my AO scheduling Ted Talk above. They play the first round over three days now. So, it's not one half of the draw on Sunday and then the other half on Monday and then on to the second round for everyone on Tuesday. Tuesday can have some second round matches, but they're still also finishing the first round. By adding the first Sunday, it allows more breathing room in the schedule.

R432 Feels like smoke and mirrors. What are the chances a Canadian nutrition supplements company would have their products tainted with roxadustat? Roxadustat is a drug that can increase haemoglobin and the production of red blood cells (similar to EPO), building endurance. And there's that how the ITIA said its tribunal accepted Halepâs argument she had taken a contaminated supplement, but found the amounts she had ingested did not explain the concentration of Roxadustat in her urine sample provided at the US Open on 29 August 2022.
She's a cunt for doing this to this Canadian company to try to manage her PR for people who don't pay attention.
by Anonymous | reply 434 | February 16, 2024 6:12 PM |
Sharapova "fought" her suspension a little, but I'm not sure she ever denied taking the substance; rather she was angling for a shorter suspension. Anyway, Sharapova's substance was actually legal for most of her career, but then went on the banned substances list near the end of her career. She didn't accomplish anything of note during the time it was banned. And once she exhausted the appeals process she just did the suspension and didn't say much about it during that time - if I'm remembering correctly.

I'd assume there's no protected ranking for bans. He's not even listed on ATP Live rankings, so he has zero points. So he'd need wildcards even into Challengers (if not challengers qualifying). Will any ATP tour events throw him a wild card into the main draw or qualifying. Is he going to play Futures?

Doha final today is Swiatek (1) v. Rybakina (3) The surface is slow for a hard court and Swiatek is fresher so I'd pick her to win but Rybakina has a 3-1 HtH over Swiatek so she's certainly capable of it.

Bad luck for Alcaraz. I'm sure he'd much rather play Etcheverry than Jarry, who has troubled him in the past. With the form Alcaraz is in I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he loses, no joke.

by Anonymous | reply 481 | February 18, 2024 4:54 PM |
I was thinking exactly the same thing, r481. Sinner was looking less than perfectly tuned, and was even looking a bit gaunt.
Still, heâs had a great run, and heâs now the highest-ever ranked Italianâheâll be n. 3 on Monday. I wonder how much higher he can go.
by Anonymous | reply 482 | February 18, 2024 6:30 PM |
I think Sinner's nailed on to take the no. 1 spot within the next 12 months. NoVaxxx focus will be on the Olympics and I expect he'll play even fewer tournaments than usual this year. Unless Alcaraz can turn things round quickly he'll start to slide down as he has a lot of ranking points to defend in the first half of this year.
Medvedev is looking strong, but h;'s already dropped behind Sinner. No-one else on the horizon is going to challenge immediately for the Top 4 spots.

"Lucky" for Rio that Carlos just happened to draw the Brazilian journeyman in the first round and allow him to advance in 10 minutes. Carlos collectes his appearance fees and now he's off to Vegas to play Rafa for some unholy, and unpublished amount of money. They all complain about the length of the tour yet they fill every free week with a money grabbing exhibition. Soon, instead of GS we'll be comparing ticket sales to determine who's best.
Rafa doesn't play Wimbledon but plays with Roger. He doesn't play USOpen, or something, flies all over SA with Ruud. Now he's in Vegas and has plans with the Saudi's, with the others. And zero plans to stay home with his wife.

Serena is mentioned of course but 0 mention of Halep.

Fils get BAGELED by the 17 year old Fonseca in Rio
Is Fils the New Mussetti?
Is the New Next Gen flopping even harder and faster than the Old Next Gen?
by Anonymous | reply 565 | February 21, 2024 8:38 PM |
Thinking more about Mouratoglou, I am guessing that his business model is to offer top players special services in exchange for his being their mentor or coach. He always makes sure to wear a shirt with his academy's logo on it and to appear in their boxes. That then impresses people who buy his tennis camps and other services.
Also I just found out that supposedly he dated Serena? That's a bit of a red flag because I've read books about tennis that talk about how some coaches try to get players emotionally/sexually attached to them so that they get to keep their position.

by Anonymous | reply 569 | February 21, 2024 9:17 PM |
R565, the New Next Gen includes Fonseca and Mensik, who both triumphed today, so I would say "no" to your question. Sadly, Fils is just having an abysmally dismal South American clay court swing.

R569 Misery doesn't want to have to spend time with his family.
by Anonymous | reply 571 | February 21, 2024 9:25 PM |
With the Sunshine Double coming up on hard courts and the post-AO European indoor/Mideast swing, I don't get why Fils even went to South America. I guess his one title is on clay, but he never struck me as one of those clay-court specialist, clay-is-my-favorite-surface types. What's to be gained by this? There's plenty of clay court tennis to be played during the lead up to the French. Even after Wimbledon there's clay court tournaments going on.

Here's another story: some journalists investigated On running shoes and found that for the model called "The Roger Advantage", co-created with tennis star Roger Federer, On pays $20.50 to the manufacturers in Vietnam, and sells them online for $218 which is a lot higher a profit margin than for companies like Adidas.
But if people will pay it when there are lots of cheaper alternatives out there...
