Is Ryan Gosling a fraud?

I don't mean this in a bad way.

I just mean it in a "Does everyone think that there's more to Ryan Gosling than there really is?" kind of way.

People see him as deep, and brooding, and some kind of actor savant.

But the more I read about him, the more I get the sense that he just grew up a very insecure kid, who didn't really fit anywhere, and didn't have any real talent, and just kind of meandered about from this to that, until he happened upon a career in the Indie-film genre.

No one saw him as particularly talented, no one saw him as a leading man, but lots of people were willing to give him a break.

And from there, his career took off.

But the most interesting thing is that he can't even really explain why.

This GQ magazine article is a good read. It gives insight into Ryan Gosling, and almost exposes that there's really "no there, there."

It’s Hollywood, seriously.

by Anonymousreply 1January 25, 2024 10:32 PM

I thought he was very good in Barbie, but he doesn't interest me as an actor.

by Anonymousreply 2January 25, 2024 10:33 PM

By “no there there” do you mean he is lacking in personal angst and drama? Maybe just showing up, knowing your lines and doing a good job just isn’t enough?

by Anonymousreply 3January 25, 2024 10:36 PM

I think he is functioning autistic or Asperger’s.

by Anonymousreply 4January 25, 2024 10:37 PM

[quote] No one saw him as particularly talented, no one saw him as a leading man, but lots of people were willing to give him a break.

I would have to include his Oscar nomination with that.

Neither Ryan, nor Greta, nor Margot really deserve an Oscar, because they're all mediocre talents.

But because Ryan is a good looking white guy, he got the Oscar nod, while the other two didn't.

It's kind of the story of his life.

by Anonymousreply 5January 25, 2024 10:37 PM

Ryan Goaling

by Anonymousreply 6January 25, 2024 10:42 PM

I don't think he takes himself, or Hollywood in general, too seriously. Just look at his reaction after Lala land lost the Oscar (while they were on stage accepting the award). He was clearly amused by the whole thing.

by Anonymousreply 7January 25, 2024 10:43 PM

[quote]But because Ryan is a good looking white guy, he got the Oscar nod, while the other two didn't.

You'd think that with all the white guys, they'd have selected someone else this year, though.

Actually, given that there are already three other white men nominated, they'd have picked someone who was not a straight white man. You'd think Charles Melton would have been nominated given how much buzz May December had.

by Anonymousreply 8January 25, 2024 10:45 PM

He was wonderful in Lars and the Real Girl.

by Anonymousreply 9January 25, 2024 10:45 PM

There are scores of good looking white guys who never get nominated and there always have been. That is not a free pass.

by Anonymousreply 10January 25, 2024 10:46 PM

I thought he was phenomenal in The Nice Guys. Excellent comedic timing and chemistry with his co-star, Russel Crowe.

If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it.

In the grand scheme of things, Ryan Gosling is one of the least offensive celebs.

I've never heard anyone say anything bad about him. He's never in the news for absurd antics.

Other than being utterly miscast in the Bladerunner sequel, I have no complaints.

by Anonymousreply 14January 25, 2024 10:59 PM

Exactly the point.

He's lucky and he's inoffensive.

To me, that's not a very good reason to nominate someone for an Oscar.

His success is somewhat inexplicable, other than the fact that he's cute and people like him.

Brad Pitt has the same story.

by Anonymousreply 15January 25, 2024 11:17 PM

A lot of people thought that he was very funny in Barbie, and that he brought something special to a role that no one expected to be interesting. That's why he got nominated. Had Gerwig cast someone like Ryan Reynolds instead, I don't think the response would be as enthusiastic. Gosling played Ken with a dead seriousness, as if he were in a drama like Blue Valentine, whereas most actors would have played it as a joke.

Why would it be inexplicable that a good looking, likable actor is a success? Good looks and charisma are usually requirements for movie stardom, not hindrances to it.

by Anonymousreply 16January 25, 2024 11:31 PM

Who cares? Who has time to think about stuff like this?

by Anonymousreply 17January 25, 2024 11:32 PM

[quote] Who cares? Who has time to think about stuff like this?

Academy voters deciding who will be the next Best Actor Oscar winner.

by Anonymousreply 18January 25, 2024 11:36 PM

I love the Ryan Goaling troll.

by Anonymousreply 19January 25, 2024 11:55 PM

[quote]I've never heard anyone say anything bad about him. He's never in the news for absurd antics.

To add to what R14 said, there is usually drama with Hollywood couples but Gosling's marriage to Eva Mendes appears to be stable and drama-free.

by Anonymousreply 20January 26, 2024 1:37 AM

[quote] But because Ryan is a good looking white guy, he got the Oscar nod, while the other two didn't.

And yet America Ferrera was also nominated, and she's not that good-looking, nor is she white, nor is she a guy.

So, your argument holds no water.

by Anonymousreply 21January 26, 2024 1:41 AM

The first time I saw him was in Murder by Numbers (2002) with Sandra Bullock and Michael Pitt. Decent film, in my opinion.

by Anonymousreply 22January 26, 2024 1:45 AM

Check out his first big splash in film, a fascinating movie called THE BELIEVER. He's really remarkable in that.

I think that he's a major talent.

by Anonymousreply 23January 26, 2024 1:48 AM

That is somebody who has worked in entertainment since he was a kid. The fact he comes across as coherent and somewhat intelligent is a miracle. Get off his dock.

by Anonymousreply 24January 26, 2024 1:49 AM

Know that you can criticize anyone on Datalounge except for the celebrities r24 personally likes!

His favorites have to be off-limits to everyone else!

R25, we have so many child performers who were destroyed.

I give baseline support to those who have survived.

Coherent and somewhat intelligent is debateable.

I think Ryan Gosling and Keanu Reeves are very similar personalities. Pretty boy child actors who matured into action heros with occasional flashes of genius in indie material. Both are believed to be zen masterly or vapid airheads in en equal measure. Both are liked by their peers, date older women, and keep their private lives private.

by Anonymousreply 28January 26, 2024 2:07 AM

Ryan Gosling appears to be among the most normal and nice people in Hollywood. So , no, I don't see anything obvious fraudulent about him.

by Anonymousreply 29January 26, 2024 2:24 AM

There's something vacant behind his eyes.

It's like the lights are on, but no one is home.

What about the American / NY accent? That's affected. He's from Ontario, Canada.

Aside from that, he does seem inoffensive. I have no interest in the Barbie movie. But I will admit I think he's attractive and he's a guilty pleasure.

by Anonymousreply 31January 26, 2024 2:36 AM

[quote] What about the American / NY accent? That's affected. He's from Ontario, Canada.

According to Wikipedia (and the Ryan Baby Goose thread):

[quote] He developed an idiosyncratic accent because, as a child, he thought having a Canadian accent did not sound "tough". He began to model his accent on that of Marlon Brando. Gosling dropped out of high school at age 17 to focus on his acting career.

Here's a blast from the past that no one would ever imagine.

Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake, and Kandi Burruss with Xcape.

If you told me that Ryan Gosling and Kandi Burruss had met before, I'd say you were lying.

Man, looks-wise, he married up with Mendes.

She's drop-dead gorgeous and, while I find Gosling to be very entertaining, he's just so-so in looks.

by Anonymousreply 43January 26, 2024 4:45 AM

He's a movie star. Good looking, charismatic, funny and an ok actor. I wouldn't want to see him play Willy Loman though.

by Anonymousreply 44January 26, 2024 4:46 AM

I think you’re thinking too much OP. He’s a charismatic movie star- a pretty good actor and quite sexy. Full stop.

Eva Mendes looks like a tranny. I'd say she was the one who married up.
