Is Ryan Gosling a fraud?
I don't mean this in a bad way.
I just mean it in a "Does everyone think that there's more to Ryan Gosling than there really is?" kind of way.
People see him as deep, and brooding, and some kind of actor savant.
But the more I read about him, the more I get the sense that he just grew up a very insecure kid, who didn't really fit anywhere, and didn't have any real talent, and just kind of meandered about from this to that, until he happened upon a career in the Indie-film genre.
No one saw him as particularly talented, no one saw him as a leading man, but lots of people were willing to give him a break.
And from there, his career took off.
But the most interesting thing is that he can't even really explain why.
This GQ magazine article is a good read. It gives insight into Ryan Gosling, and almost exposes that there's really "no there, there."

I thought he was very good in Barbie, but he doesn't interest me as an actor.

By “no there there” do you mean he is lacking in personal angst and drama? Maybe just showing up, knowing your lines and doing a good job just isn’t enough?

I think he is functioning autistic or Asperger’s.

I would have to include his Oscar nomination with that.
Neither Ryan, nor Greta, nor Margot really deserve an Oscar, because they're all mediocre talents.
But because Ryan is a good looking white guy, he got the Oscar nod, while the other two didn't.
It's kind of the story of his life.

I don't think he takes himself, or Hollywood in general, too seriously. Just look at his reaction after Lala land lost the Oscar (while they were on stage accepting the award). He was clearly amused by the whole thing.

You'd think that with all the white guys, they'd have selected someone else this year, though.
Actually, given that there are already three other white men nominated, they'd have picked someone who was not a straight white man. You'd think Charles Melton would have been nominated given how much buzz May December had.

If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it.

In the grand scheme of things, Ryan Gosling is one of the least offensive celebs.
I've never heard anyone say anything bad about him. He's never in the news for absurd antics.
Other than being utterly miscast in the Bladerunner sequel, I have no complaints.

Exactly the point.
He's lucky and he's inoffensive.
To me, that's not a very good reason to nominate someone for an Oscar.
His success is somewhat inexplicable, other than the fact that he's cute and people like him.
Brad Pitt has the same story.

A lot of people thought that he was very funny in Barbie, and that he brought something special to a role that no one expected to be interesting. That's why he got nominated. Had Gerwig cast someone like Ryan Reynolds instead, I don't think the response would be as enthusiastic. Gosling played Ken with a dead seriousness, as if he were in a drama like Blue Valentine, whereas most actors would have played it as a joke.
Why would it be inexplicable that a good looking, likable actor is a success? Good looks and charisma are usually requirements for movie stardom, not hindrances to it.

To add to what R14 said, there is usually drama with Hollywood couples but Gosling's marriage to Eva Mendes appears to be stable and drama-free.

[quote] But because Ryan is a good looking white guy, he got the Oscar nod, while the other two didn't.
And yet America Ferrera was also nominated, and she's not that good-looking, nor is she white, nor is she a guy.
So, your argument holds no water.

I think Ryan Gosling and Keanu Reeves are very similar personalities. Pretty boy child actors who matured into action heros with occasional flashes of genius in indie material. Both are believed to be zen masterly or vapid airheads in en equal measure. Both are liked by their peers, date older women, and keep their private lives private.

What about the American / NY accent? That's affected. He's from Ontario, Canada.
Aside from that, he does seem inoffensive. I have no interest in the Barbie movie. But I will admit I think he's attractive and he's a guilty pleasure.

According to Wikipedia (and the Ryan Baby Goose thread):
[quote] He developed an idiosyncratic accent because, as a child, he thought having a Canadian accent did not sound "tough". He began to model his accent on that of Marlon Brando. Gosling dropped out of high school at age 17 to focus on his acting career.
