I wouldn’t say crazy, but I was so impressed with Timothee C when I first saw him (CMBYN and Ladybird). So disappointed to see him with any Kardashian that’s it’s lowered my opinion of him.

R10 I feel like he was still fun and interesting in the early 2010s. I know he’s a divisive actor on here but I thought he was terrific in Django Unchained, The Great Gatsby, and The Wolf of Wall Street. Those performances were also kinda the last time I was really impressed with his acting. That was a fun time to follow Leo, plus the Oscar memes about him were funny. Now he’s a joke for his dating life and has become increasingly boring and sad.

Most of them. I used to be attracted to the mystery of stars and actors especially. But now it's oversaturated with reality types who used to be more fringe celebrities and everyone being on social media it's like the magic has worn off of most them. Everyone has an opinion, you see where they live and what they do and they have become uninteresting for the most part.

Gwen Stefani. Teenage me thought she was the coolest woman in the world. But current Gwen makes me embarrassed for OG Gwen. She’s so cheesy, with bad taste in music, fashion and men (Blake Shelton, barf). Not to mention the stretched puffy Instagram face.

I completely agree with R31 and R43 -- as an eldergay the movie stars and celebrities from other fields had something that has appeared to vanish. Is it all about social media? I think so. There is no longer a thrill when seeing or running into someone these days. (There may be exceptions.) There was even a New York Times article -- Style section of course -- that talked about the experiences of average Joes who had serendipitous meetings with celebrities and then spent time with them, like skiing with Springsteen or drinking with Neeson.
That said, I had an inexplicable crush on Pat Sullivan, the quarterback for Auburn who won the Heisman in 1971. I look at pictures now and wonder what I was thinking. Not exactly a looker.

R62 This is a good one. Elizabeth showed so much promise early in her career. Clearly her agents convinced her to go for the $$ roles (and who could blame them) and I stopped paying attention. She’s wasted in that Avengers drek. I will say, she got my attention again in last year’s Love and Death on HBO. My hope is now that she’s a gazillionaire courtesy of Marvel, she’ll go back to the offbeat, indie projects that made her interesting in the first place.

I totally bought into the hype around Matthew McConaughey when he first came on the scene in the 90s. He wasn't even my type but he just oozed sex appeal. Then as he got more famous he got up his own ass and I lost interest. Not into potheads either.

Don't apologize for crushing on Mel Gibson. He was hot as hell for a while. I remember a movie he was in where he played a convict. Mrs. Soffel. Damn. And yes, Gallipoli. Lethal Weapon series, Mad Max. HYeah.Year of Living Dangerously, Maverick. To be honest, I was kind of over him by the time he made Braveheart. He looked so ridiculous with that long hair and he was obviously too old to play that part. At least I thought he was.
Gerard Butler is lucky he had success with those bullshit action movies because he really didn't have much of a career before that. He was on the brink of stardom and then started to fizzle. But he was hot for a minute. he looks old now.Old and worn out.

Jennifer Lopez.
Many years ago, a friend of mine in Houston waited on her and her entourage at a very nice restaurant. She demanded that the place's very starstruck manager go to the store and get the kind of bottled water she liked, because she wasn't doing that tap bullshit and they didn't carry the kind she liked. She and her people needled the hell out of my friend until the manager got back from the store with it, and then complained when it wasn't served cold, even though he of course brought glasses of ice with it.
She ran my friend ragged, and laughed the whole time. Bitched and called him names at every opportunity. We were both servers at that point, and I'd gone to his restaurant and asked for him at times (hey, if you're gonna tip someone, might as well keep it in the family), so I know he was damned good at what he did. I saw how he treated all his tables. He loved his job and did his best at all times.
She and her friends stiffed him. Zero tip. After camping out at that table, in that private room that was given just to her and nobody else, for 3 hours. Just because she could.
I never liked her after that. "I'm just Jenny from the block" my ass.

I'll echo those who say all of them, now that social media has taken away the illusion that anybody is somehow "special." Famous people are just as fucked up as anybody else. The whole idea of celebrity is archaic at this point.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | January 23, 2024 6:26 AM |
Remember, social media is still in its infancy.
Just like radio and (silent) movies were still in their infancy 100 years ago (c. 1920s) and then went on to change the course of human history, for better or worse, by the end of the 20th century.
Makes you wonder how much more social media will influence the world for the rest of this century.

Most of them. Especially since COVID for some reason. I came to the conclusion that most of these celebs are overpaid, full-of-themselves, whiney princes and princesses. I'm not impressed with any sports celebs or actors. Musicians, and some singers are different since there is actual talent involved and most are very underpaid unless they are a ancient Rolling Stone, Dave Grohl, Streisand, etc. I've met several actors that could have made great impressions but there are only a handful that stand out as being sincerely nice, good people.

Madonna. I became a fan when I was 11 and I found out this song called "Like a Prayer" was by Madonna. That was in 1997. I liked her through Rebel Heart (even if I ignored Hard Candy and Confessions). But Madame X was where she really lost me. And now that I am reading about her being 3 hours late to her own shows, I really don't get her. And now she's releasing NFTs of bugs crawling out of her vagina. It's revolting. Her most devoted "stans" who blame her unpopularity among the younger generation as "sexism" need to wake the fuck up.

I used to love Kathy Griffin. I watched her reality show, all of her specials, and even saw her live a few times. She gradually became less funny over time as her act devolved into stories about lame reality stars and her mother. Later, her attacks on Andy Cohen just made her seem super bitter and her reaction to the Trump stunt fallout revealed the depths of her narcissism. I can't stand her now.
