Suzanne Pleshette was an underrated 70's sex symbol

She was ready to join the ranks of Farrah Fawcett and Suzanne Somers, but it just didn't happen.

Pro Arts even scrapped her poster shortly after her "Hot Stuff" bombed at the box office.

Why is she squatting? 70’s photos like these look so cheap.

by Anonymousreply 1January 19, 2024 5:10 AM

She's very attractive but not the fluffy sex kitten type. She exudes intelligence.

by Anonymousreply 2January 19, 2024 5:15 AM

Favorite cigarette brand was Pall Mall; reputedly smoked two packs a day for about 40 years. She quit after a 1998 cancer scare.

by Anonymousreply 3January 19, 2024 5:19 AM

For most years of the Bob Newhart Show, she had an unattractive short dyke haircut and flat makeup.

In the last season, she grew her hair out, upgraded her makeup, and looked a lot better.

From '79 through the early '80s, she went full sex bomb to promote her various (usually TV) movie projects and looked great.

by Anonymousreply 5January 19, 2024 5:23 AM

She was past her prime by the time her agent floated the idea for a poster but, then again, Pro Arts produced a poster for Karen Black in the late 70s.

Is that cross eyed bitch airing out her cunt, or trying to take a greasy shot.r6? No wonder she needs a cigarette.

by Anonymousreply 7January 19, 2024 5:28 AM

UTTER BULLSHIT FROM OP. Pleshette was too old to be pin up sex symbol in the 70s. She was in her 30s and 40s. I'm not denying she was pretty.

by Anonymousreply 8January 19, 2024 5:30 AM

Suzanne Pleshette had the sexiest whiskey voice.

Even though she started out as a leading lady in films like "From the Terrace," she adored playing Emily Hartley. She often said it was the highlight of her career. She was one of the greatest straight women in the business (along with Margaret Dumont and Jane Curtin).

by Anonymousreply 9January 19, 2024 5:51 AM

The photo at OP is signature Harry Langdon shoot.

by Anonymousreply 10January 19, 2024 6:01 AM

I always thought she was underrated in her beauty and attractiveness. The voice was also unique and legendary.

Gorgeous woman but. The photo in the OP is frumpy, not sexy.

by Anonymousreply 15January 19, 2024 6:30 AM

She's the second best thing in the Birds. Her dynamic with Tippi Hedren is incredible. Simultaneously rivals and allies, it's a damn tricky thing to pull of but the two of them nailed it. in lesser hands she would have been a villain but she makes the character sympathetic and eventually heroic.

by Anonymousreply 16January 19, 2024 6:35 AM

She was kind of short to be a sex symbol, really.

by Anonymousreply 17January 19, 2024 7:04 AM

Annie gives lezzie vibes in the Birds. Of course that would have made Annie bi, because of course she loved riding Mitch's large stiff staff, too. Annie and Mitch were probably drinking buddies.

by Anonymousreply 18January 19, 2024 7:05 AM

Mrs. Bundy is the obvious lesbian. In fact I'm sure a dozen undergraduate theses in film studies have unpacked how Bodega Bay was teeming with lesbianism and this contributes to the fort/da cycles of bird attacks, yada yada yada.

by Anonymousreply 21January 19, 2024 8:14 AM

When I was a kid I would watch this show with my folks, and I always disliked it when Bob was at his office with his weird patients. I always wanted him back at the apartment with Emily because I thought she was so cool. I also loved their apartment with its view from the picture windows.

by Anonymousreply 22January 19, 2024 8:16 AM

Didn't TV women/moms in their 30s and 40s have the same type of hairstyle in the early '70s? IIRC, Carol Brady and Shirley Partridge did adding mullet-like extensions later in the series.

OMG Bob Newhart is still alive (94).

She always seemed older than she was. Only 25 in The Birds, but seemed like a world-weary woman in her mid-30s.

by Anonymousreply 28January 19, 2024 9:00 AM

MUCH sexier than either Fawcett or Somers.

Does she have on pantyhose in that pinup OP?

I concur the the Queens Who Just Have a Minute to Catch Up that nothing as ever been as shocking as Suzanne Pleshette in Extremities.

Was Pleshette ever rumored lesbian in real life? One can imagine the series of low moans that would be the soundtrack to her getting together with, say, Polly Bergen.

by Anonymousreply 33January 19, 2024 2:50 PM

She wasn’t considered a sex symbol or a sex cymbal or a sex anything.

by Anonymousreply 34January 19, 2024 4:02 PM

My parents thought she was pretty sexy on the Bob Newhart show. Too sexy for Bob Newhart.

by Anonymousreply 35January 19, 2024 4:07 PM

I was not a fan of hers in the 60s. I found her humorless and one note. When I heard they hired her for the Bob Newhart Show, I just couldn't imagine her being any good. (I had missed her comedy films of the late 60s.) So, I was shocked at how great she was on the show, and finally became a fan.

[quote] Her long Television Academy interview is wild.

R52 Thanks for the link. I watched the whole interview. It seems she was intent on having a good work/home balance and was choosy about what work she took on whenever she could afford to say no, so that may have contributed to why she wasn’t given the big Hollywood treatment that was accorded to other actresses of her era.

I was amused by her stories about Bob Newhart, who was so laid back she became like his Jewish mother pushing him to work harder. And then she said his wife Ginny also was pushing him around to do things. Ginny and Bob were Catholic, so it was like Bob had both a Jewish and a Catholic mother pushing him around at the same time.

by Anonymousreply 75January 21, 2024 1:02 AM

Was there ever a Marcia Wallace poster?

by Anonymousreply 76January 25, 2024 12:07 AM

Bea Arthur had a poster in a similar pose to OP's except she was wearing slacks which were pulled around her knees and she was in Betty White's dressing room.

by Anonymousreply 77January 25, 2024 12:23 AM

She was a "broad" in the greatest sense of the word. They don't make 'em like her anymore.

by Anonymousreply 78January 25, 2024 12:32 AM

I was 9 when the Bob Newhart show started, and 15 when ir ended. I have to say nat Suzanne made my tween lesbian heart race.

by Anonymousreply 79January 25, 2024 1:09 AM

The OP image requires Photoshop. Narrow the midsection, elongate the body, depuff the hair and fix the angle of the arm resting on her hip.

by Anonymousreply 80January 25, 2024 1:12 AM

I've been a Suzanne fan all these years and never realized until I saw Op's picture that she had only one leg.

They hid that well.

by Anonymousreply 81January 25, 2024 1:20 AM

Same r67. I always thought she was French. I had no idea she was Jewish until her obits mentioned it.

by Anonymousreply 82January 25, 2024 1:25 AM

And her cousin was John Pleshette, best known as Richard on Knots Landing R82...strange, he never married...hmmmm

by Anonymousreply 83January 25, 2024 1:43 AM

I only know two things about Suzanne Pleshette. She was a great friend of Tennessee Williams and she enjoyed a good caning.

by Anonymousreply 84January 25, 2024 1:49 AM

Compared to Fawcett, sure, but she was someone who was considered beautiful and sexy by just about everyone. Every review would mention her looks. Carson always looked like he was ready to jump her bones. Even her obit in the LA Times called her sexy which is actually a little off for an obit now that I think about it! I think her personality may have hindered a mass sex kitten type fame as she was very much a broad off screen. Sex kittens of every era have a more inoffensive bland, ditzy, girlish personality.

The photo in the OP is from the 80s. I first encountered Pleshette at that time in a tv movie and thought she was stunning. I remember stopping what I was doing to stare for a while and then staying with the movie just to catch the credits to see who this actress was. I made a point of catching her on Carson from then on and she popped up a lot, often with nothing to promote. She’d just shoot the breeze and Johnny would say he and Joanne were going out to dinner with Suzanne and Mr Pleshette afterwards. She was in many tv movies through the 80s where she looking fabulous playing a milf type with a toy boy. I also recall she even played an incestous mother to a young sex on legs Tom Berenger.

She seems like the kind of woman Johnny Carson would have been attracted to.

She did seem like a classy lady and did seem too attractive for Bob Newhart. But it still was a plausible couple, somehow.

Her voice was smoky. It sounds good until it goes too low and you start coughing.
