I wouldn't want to see Statham try a serious drama, but as others have said, he can be very funny, and he knows exactly what his range is and doesn't stray from it. He usually brings more to his action movies than they deserve, which can make those junky B-movies watchable.

R5 - me too. He was great in Spy. I honestly don’t mind him. He doesn’t come across as a cunt IRL, and I think doesn’t take himself too seriously.

His persona is the charming thug. Women and gays love a man emotionally distant, with flashes of humor. They’re thinking, I’ll be the difference in his life.
