Starsky and Hutch were one of the oldest fan fic pairings. It started in the 60s with Kirk/Spock.

Only recently I started following him on SM. He was fucking hilarious and his Trump-shading was lovely to see, no fucks given.

I always enjoyed him, it was sad that he was a wife beater. I assumed he learned his lesson after the brouhaha back in the early 80s.

Love him in Salem's Lot with James Mason

I think he had said he had prostate cancer a few years ago.
R7 No one-hit wonder: he released two singles from his album in 1977 - 'Don't Give Up On Us' and 'Silver Lady'. It peaked at #52 on the Hot 100, #23 on the AC and #1 on the UK charts.
R17 Glynnis Johns was the first, he was the second - one more to go. I think it may be another actor / actress with ties to both England and US.

I don't think it's fair for these celebrity families to milk the sorry for your loss cow without the money shot. WTF did he actually die of? If nothing else, think of the poor Wikipedians, twitching away.

R30, I listen to Casey Kasem’s ‘70s top 40 shows on Sirius & there are a lot of follow-up songs released that make it to the weekly Billboard list that are only there because of the history with the artist. Unless a song made it to the top 20, it wasn’t a “hit.” David Soul was, indeed, a one-hit wonder.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 5, 2024 6:19 PM |
May God rest his David Soul.

"Silver Lady" made it in to the top 20 in Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands and the UK.

Silver Lady was not a hit.

I had an intense platonic crush on Paul Michael Glaser and didn't pay any attention to Soul. But I rewatched two seasons of S&H during the pandemic and Soul was a charismatic, good-looking guy.

Soul was married five times. His third wife was Patti Carnel Sherman, former wife of Bobby Sherman, Soul's co-star in 'Here Come the Brides.' Soul was jailed and ordered to attend therapy classes for alcoholism, after attacking her when she was seven months pregnant.
Soul's fifth wife is British. Soul became a naturalized British citizen in 2004.

Starsky & Hutch were groundbreaking in that they were two straight guys who didn't seem put off by truly caring about one another and not being afraid to show it. This was in the mid 1970s.
Compare that to various moments of physical affection among Chandler, Ross, and Joey on Friends and they immediately jump to HEY WE'RE NOT GAY when someone observes them.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | January 5, 2024 8:27 PM |
[quote] was jailed and ordered to attend therapy classes for alcoholism,
Was it alcoholism in addition to anger management? Wondering because in an interview in 2012 David has the guy meet him in a bar and he's drinking wine. When the interviewer asks about it, Soul gets touchy, saying it's a boring subject.
After seeing recent pictures of him the first thing i thought was, 'he's still drinking'. It always shows up in the face when you hit your 60s if not before.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | January 5, 2024 8:47 PM |
Married 5 times = massive anger issues and domestic violence.

R33 You listen to "American Top 40" , which is taken from the weekly Billboard Hot 100 Singles, and have decided that only the Top 20 are actual hits ? Bwahahahahahaha! How very generous of you.
He was not a one-hit wonder : he had a second single which broke the HOT 100 Singles chart called 'Silver Lady' which peaked at #52. I am even more generous than you.

Listening to the old shows of Casey - who would have thought the end of the life of this most vanilla of stars would become so clouded in mystery?! - I’m amazed how many songs in the second half of the top 40 are ones of which I, a devoted listener of ‘70s radio, never heard. Invariably, they are from established stars or those coming off their one & only hit song. For that particular week, fans of the established stars or those who had just had their first hit gave a lift to their new releases.

Okay, R64, just for you, I listened to this song. I, like R38 & R39, have zero memory of this song. It was NOT a “hit” in the US. And it peaked, one week, at only # 52 on the US Billboard Hot 100 - from which Casey’s top 40 was culled. It made it as high as #23 one week, but on a different chart, the US Easy Listening one.

What the hell is your problem, R67? One post mentioning his Trump-shading has hardly turned it into a Trump thread. If Trump-bashing offends you so much, you'd do better to avoid DL altogether.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | January 6, 2024 12:37 AM |
He's another one I would've assumed was dead already since his alcoholism & anger issues were pretty well known. But good for him for getting his act (somewhat) together & starting a new life in the UK. To his credit, he parlayed marginal acting talents into a decent career. He was much better in Salem's Lost than his successor, Rob Lowe.

by Anonymous | reply 98 | January 6, 2024 4:27 AM |
I read his obit in NYTimes earlier this evening, it references him having gotten to a low point financially in the late '60s where he sold himself sexually à la Jon Voight's character "Midnight Cowboy" for a bit. Never had heard about any of that. Anyway, I always thought he more sublimely complemented Glaser's more visceral sexiness, both hotties, in "Starsky & Hutch." And groundbreaking also in being TV cops on the beat together who worked the streets (pardon...pun?) in their plainclothes in a way that broke the mold in that genre of, say, "Dragnet" in crime dramas or Barney and Andy in "Andy Griffith Show." Good times. RIP.
