Tony Goldwyn – After Lupita Nyong’o revealed that Harvey Weinstein sexually harassed her, Scandal star, Tony Goldwyn was compelled to share his story with Access Hollywood about his sexual harassment experience. “It happened to me as a young guy, when I was literally Lupita’s age. It happened to me by a man and it wasn’t as extended or awful as what Lupita went through, but it was the same thing,” Goldwyn revealed. “It was the casting couch and I didn’t understand quite what was going on, or what was happening,” he continued. “I thought it was my fault. There were rumors that Tom Cruise hit the Geffen casting couch early in his career
by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 28, 2023 5:02 PM |
I know the casting couch is real, but there is another reality. Some actors are so beautiful and sexy that directors, producers, casting directors, etc. are very drawn to them (as is everyone else), and so those gorgeous people are given great advantages without actually having to put out sexually. It's like, for example, an average-looking person doing whatever is necessary to get close to a really hot, beautiful person -- frequently younger -- just for the thrill of being close to them, without any reasonable expectation that they are going to become sexually involved. So I wouldn't be very surprised if guys like Phillipe, Reeves, etc. made it without having to use the casting couch.

Since this is anonymous, I'm going to admit it. I once hired an assistant, who had a piss poor resume and few skills, simply because he was gorgeous. I mean movie star/model gorgeous. by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 28, 2023 5:41 PM |
I think he had some awareness, but he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. He knew he was good looking, but I'm not sure if he knew just how good looking he was. Girls and various opportunities just fell into his lap. I also think he had a big cock. Some in the office hooked up with him and said that he did, but women can be unreliable about cock size.

I believe the casting couch exists, just not in the sinister way DLers have imagined it. I consider it more like the kind of networking anyone does for a job. You end up at the same gatherings, and by the end of the night, if you're lucky, you may slip and fall on to a cock that can get you a big enough part to pay for your SAG card or that part that will get you noticed in a big way. Or you may meet someone with CAA who can get you in the door with a smaller agency, so you can work your way up. You give something to get something, it's all quite transactional.

R36 for Ryan, he was fitting the teen heartthrob, WB (I guess it’s CW today) type of crowd. He was getting roles that were supposed to bring in horny girls that would be watching Buffy, She’s All That, and other late-90s teen vehicles. A lot of people casted in those films just needed to be hot and they were recycled so I don’t think the male stars were fucking for those jobs. Ryan was in that SMG and Freddy Prince Jr set.
By the time he would need to break out into serious roles, which may require some extra convincing, his wife became A-list thanks to Legally Blonde, then follow up RomCom success.
He married a money maker so the desperate need to make money, or book work, wasn’t as prevalent. Reece and Ryan also had kids by the early 2000s so when mommy was working, daddy Ryan would watch the kids.
That may be why he wouldn’t have ever needed to do the casting couch. I believe him since he was living the life of the rich and famous thanks to Reece.

R113. “Casted”? Do we need to go over the conjugation of this verb again?
Sigh.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | December 29, 2023 5:20 PM |
R102 is right. It’s not always “take out your tits Coco” a la Fame. It can be very subtle in that an actor or an agent knows what would benefit them to do with certain casting directors. It’s like hiring an escort - the audition is like the companionship you’re paying for, the meeting later for drinks somewhere is the “what happens between consenting adults” part. Some actors just happen to be really attracted by a casting agent one particular night and will seduce them if they have to.
And a lot of you are thinking casting couches for major roles. But a lot of these actors have been in the business a while before they even get a shot at auditioning for a big role - so a lot of opportunity to be abused by no names when they’re no names.
So Collin Ferrell might have gone through a couple that lead to nothing. That’s how he probably knew how to work the big fish when given the chance. I don’t get it anyway. A leading actor’s career is based on their fuckability mostly. They sell sex, might as well use it.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | December 29, 2023 5:25 PM |
The power of being a casting director is very tempting. I was an intern for a casting director when I was in college. I had very little to no say. I worked with two different directors - one cast the failed CITY Soap Opera with Morgan Fairchild. The other is kinda major.
Anyway, actors studios would invite ME to sit in on their monologues. I wasn’t even getting paid for casting. There would be these very attractive men and pretty girls too giving their best trying to impress you. It’s like the jocks and the cheerleaders desperately wanted you to be their best friend.
There WAS this very attractive actor whose headshot I passed on to the soap director. The power to make something happen for someone hot who desperately wants it is an aphrodisiac. And he did get cast in a small role.
So just from that little experience I can see how people much more powerful than me, real gatekeepers, can easily abuse that power around movie star caliber beautiful people.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | December 29, 2023 5:36 PM |
The real question is would you want to suck them or would you want them to suck you?
Me personally, I’d want to suck on some pretty man peen. That’s why I’m always surprised when it’s intimated the actor had to suck dick. Maybe it’s getting off making this virile pretty person submit. Who knows.

I think it happens more often in the smaller shows and films. For big films and shows, you want great, professional actors who will elevate the material - and yes, looks is part of it.
And many actors are just willing to do it as being transactional and may convince themselves to just act their way through it. Some of them ARE the ones trying to use sex to their advantage.
No doubt there is some abuse, but how do you balance out people willing and wanting to use sex to get ahead?

Steve Guttenberg: The American film and TV actor stated on the Howard Stern show that his cock is 10 inches long hard. Stern said he heard Steve is a "freak" in the bedroom and Guttenberg admitted his cock is 10 inches, "but not on cold mornings". He said, "It's genetic", "I do like to show it", and his dick is a source of "a lot of confidence". He has to pull his pants down to power-up, but said, "You can't do that everywhere." Guttenberg has a big floppy bulge in the film "Cocoon", is definitely freeballing, and his skimpy blue shorts have bleach marks to emphasize his endowment.

It gets your foot in the door but then it's up to the audience. I read an interview with an actress who was young in the 50s and she said often young actresses who were unknown were expected to put out. If you didn't there was one right behind you who would. I always felt Lois Smith put out for Kazan for East of Eden. It just turned out she was brilliantly talented. Kazan intimates in his autobio he slept with a lot of young actresses. And the way he talks about Brando it sounds like he would have jumped in bed with him in a second despite being straight.
Think of all the young actors and actresses who put out but went nowhere because they got no audience response. And what is Goldwyn talking about he didn't know what was going on until it was over. Was he 12?

This whole #metoo movement lets too many people off the hook. They know what they're doing but then out of guilt want absolution. Rape is one thing but sleeping with someone to get a role and then say you were being used is disingenuous. If somebody invites you to their suite and nobody else is there and they're old and you're young and attractive you've got to be brain damaged not to know what's going on.

A buyer for a cd store many years ago told me he had a baritone friend who was told by James Levine that if he slept with him he would give him a role at the Met. I don't know if the baritone was straight or not but he declined Levine's offer. I'm gay and if I were a singer I'd decline Levine's offer. Not because I would find it morally objectional but because Levine was disgusting. If it were Bernstein or Karajan or Muti or Abbado it would be a different story.

I've often wondered the same thing. He definitely lost some of his sex appeal once news of the marriage to Juliet got out.
They married in 1980 when he just getting started. Part of many young actor's sex appeal is their availability. At least the illusion of availability to help fuel women and gay men's fantasies.
Being married to a woman twice your age in a marriage that was widely publicized at the time, definitely hurt his career. And remember, at that point, Max was pretty much an unknown; Juliet was the better known of the two thanks to Nanny and the Professor.

I don't think he was the type to appeal to the heartland, anyway. He seemed to want to push himself as a smoldering pretty boy. Some people who achieve fame are married at the time - Frank Sinatra, for ex. Huge heart throb. Clark Gable was married to an older woman (and had been divorced from another older woman) when he became a star. It didn't seem to hurt his popularity.

I got attacked by a friend of mine when we watched the show on Apple TV with Reese and Jennifer. I don’t remember the name.
But the Steve Carrel (?) character—the host of the morning show—was unfairly fired because of that woman. They were adults. They were both drinking. She kissed him first. They had sex. And then when she didn’t get the job, she got him fired. Absurd.

r199 we can't compare the era of Sinatra and Gable, who were intrenched in the studio system, to the media landscape of the 1980s. Completely different media environment. The studios basically lost so much control over the narratives surrounding their stars, compared to the power they wielded prior to the mid-60/70s.
So, yes, stars of old Hollywood could mary a grandma and retain a career because the studio would make up whatever story sold it best, and the media went along (due to payouts and access), which the public would accept or simply never hear about. By the 1980s, the media expanded and the agents/publicists, not studios, had the main responsibility to craft long-term star narratives. They don't have the money or power to make a newcomer digestible to the public, like a studio.
But, one modern studio system, that proves studios can make anyone a star, is Marvel. They turned all those men into stars. Firing on all cylinders. WB just left their heros publicists do most of the work and they comparatively flopped as stars and movies.

[quote] So, yes, stars of old Hollywood could mary a grandma and retain a career because the studio would make up whatever story sold it best, and the media went along (due to payouts and access), which the public would accept or simply never hear about.
The studio never held back the news of Gable being married to an older woman, though.
In the 70s, Burt Reynolds was involved with a much older woman, Dinah Shore. He was a successful sex symbol.
Martin and Lewis, the next huge phenomenon after Sinatra, were also both married.
I doubt if the public really went for Maxwell Caulfield, his being married to Juliet Mills (who was young-looking and pretty at the time) would have made a huge difference.
