Ashford & Simpson favorites
Today I’m listening to A&S. This is 70s and 80s r&b at its finest. Nick Ashford always kind of scared me as a gayling. He looked like a mean ol pimp to me who would turn my ass out onto the streets for $20. Anyway, Nick is no longer with us but we still have Val. Her song Dinosaurs Are Coming Back makes my ass smile. Why don’t you put on some A&S today??
Some of my A&S favorites from my playlist
It’ll Come, It’ll Come, It’ll Come
Found A Cure
Street Corner
It’s Much Deeper
Solid
Babies
Relations
Comes With The Package
Cookies and Cake
Dinosaurs Are Coming Back Again” Valerie Simpson
Turn Around the Square ( featuring Roberta Flack) Valerie Simpson

This is my favorite of A&S.
I love Street Corner, but the video is so amateurish it's laughable. If they made the video on a shoestring, it certainly looks it.

What about Til We Get it Right or Is it Still Good to Ya?

Nick Ashford always seemed a little light in the loafers.

I can never get over Nick Ashford's nasty hair, it looks so greasy and awful. He seemed so nelly, which is fine, of course, but just weird.
I knew their decades-long assistant, an older woman who sadly died of Covid at age seventy-nine. She had only lovely things to say about Nick and Valerie and they paid her well and were very loyal.

I think they were good people. Val still is. Nick was very tall and did have long Geri curl wet look hair. Often wore genie looking stage clothes. Looked like a pimp!

They always looked like they needed a bath and a better stylist.
The music was standard fare and is now mostly forgotten.

Hey r10, try asking anybody under 40 who Ashford and Simpson is and let us all know your results.

R9 I don’t give 2 shits if people under 40 know who they are, if you or trump think they’re relevant etc etc. I’m 50 yrs old and I like them!!!100%!!!!!! I like lots and lots and lots of talented artists and do not limit my tastes to Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, SZA, etc. I enjoy Ashford and Simpson! Now please stifle yourself and come to terms with the fact that you’re limited. Merry Christmas- misanthrope!

Regarding the comments re Nick Ashford's seeming effeminate and inferences drawn from that. Anthony Heilbut's book "The Fan Who Knew Too Much" is a brilliant discussion of black gospel and its progeny. Traditional black American culture isn't especially friendly to LGBTQ people, but they have long found sanctuary in the church and are given a great deal of freedom as long as it is backstage. This applies to women as well as men. Clara Ward, for example, had long term female partners while she had a romantic relationship with Aretha Franklin's father. Sam Cook and Marvin Gaye had male lovers. Little Richard famously struggled with his sexuality and his place in the church. And if you've ever seen the Aretha Franklin documentary Amazing Grace, James Cleveland the musical director, is as flamboyantly nelly as they come. And check out the choir--oh my! I haven't heard much speculation about Nick Ashford, but I think people feel protective of his memory. Although he is dead, Valerie Simpson is alive and much beloved.

Love 'em. They put on a brilliant show at the New Orleans Jazzfest many moons ago.
