It is fucking NUTS that it took almost 25 years to catch Lazarus. She was the obvious suspect. The only thing missing from Sherri's condo was the marriage license. Who the hell breaks into someone's home and steals a marriage license. Then of course the history of stalking, harassment and obsessive behavior. The LAPD clearly didn't want to investigate one of their own. It took over two decades and a whole new crop of detectives to finally solve it.

The LAPD is incredibly corrupt and insular. Has been since the beginning. None of this surprises me.

I like the idea that she'll come before a parole board so all of her sociopathic misdeeds can be heard yet again.

What's amusing about this case is that her sucker of a husband after Ruettan totally and completely supported his wife and they were still married after her sentencing. Former law enforcement here (state level). All cops, no matter if they have a college degree, will start out doing patrol (beat). The ones with college degrees do tend to get promoted faster than the ones with just high school.

Especially after cheating on his wife, I think the guilt that his lover killed her was more than he could live with. He’s still an ass.

I had no idea how athletic Stephanie was when she was younger and I feel it must have been utterly frightening in Sherri's final moments-

Stephanie showed up at the condo on two occasions unannounced. The first time she asked John to was some skis and the asshole didn't tell her to leave, he let her stay for awhile. The second time Sherri was alone and Stephanie had let herself in. Sherri told her to leave and never come back. I would bet money that a) Stephanie's trips to the condo were to see the layout of the place and b) she had picked the lock and let herself in to snoop around at other times, when John and Sherri weren't home, and nobody ever found out about it.

Stephanie also showed up at the hospital where Sherri worked and confronted her. Sherri was in tears.

That asshole John never intervened and never formally ended his relationship with Stephanie. There was never a "fuck off you crazy bitch" moment. Perhaps that wouldn't have changed what ultimately happened, but John should've done something.

I don’t know if you all are the same age as them. I was born in the 80s. I imagine this Gen X, or younger boomer reasoned this just no way a woman could do this. I think he was in legit self denial until they came forward with the evidence all those years later.

R163 oh yes they were definitely boomers. I wasn’t sure exactly how old they were as well as what year in the decade the crime actually took place. I do think Stephanie may have been a few years younger than them. I discovered the Hollywood crime podcast with the episode about this. Those ladies do a good job in explaining the facts in a unique and entertaining style.

John did mention her name, he claims he told the police several times, but according to the 20/20 piece, it is mentioned only once in files in November, several months after the murder. Stephanie was so obviously a suspect, I find it hard to believe John didn't push the LAPD to investigate her.

R165, I was really surprised to learn that Stephanie was only 25 when she committed the murder. This comes out in the last minutes of the 20/20 piece. John was the same age. He and Stephanie attended UCLA together and she threw him a 25th birthday party while he, unbeknownst to her, was seeing. Sherri was 29 when she was murdered.

In court, John testified that he fucked Stephanie 20 to 30 times from 1981 through 1984, though they were not dating, according to him. Things were kind of crazy in the early 80s.
