The hotel desk clerk sketch with Kate and Billie a few seasons ago got some big laffs, so there’s a 100% chance they’ll do it again tonight. Or an iteration of it.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 17, 2023 3:28 AM |
She’ll be Giuliani in the opener, maybe?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 17, 2023 3:30 AM |
The dead-looking stunt audience members they put around the regulars are so annoying looking always.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 17, 2023 3:32 AM |
What works against SNL in this era is that everyone speaks in that A1 monotone cadence that removes a lot of noise heir comedy delivery uniqueness with their personalities and lines.

^Try again—apologies:

Maya finally wore a normal dress in public. She usually wears truly hideous ensembles.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | December 17, 2023 3:50 AM |
Agree, I believe that Maya was the inspiration for the life sized potholder and prairie pioneer woman inspired fashions at Target and Walmart over the last few years.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 17, 2023 3:53 AM |
The ABBA commercial skit is hilarious!
by Anonymous | reply 21 | December 17, 2023 3:59 AM |
r20 I can't tell you how much I hated that trend. People somehow forgot that clothes were supposed to be flattering, at least to some degree.

I told you it was gay lady night. Tampon Farm.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | December 17, 2023 4:08 AM |
SNL’s “funny” is back tonight!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 17, 2023 4:09 AM |
Tampon Farm could have been clever. Bad writing made it pointless

R20 Life sized potholder?

Billie Eilish’s eyebrows look like they are going to run across her face.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 17, 2023 4:15 AM |
Billie’s spotlight to sigh again, I mean to “sing.”
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 17, 2023 4:16 AM |
I guess Kate's cancer is back and that may explain why Wiig and Rudolph are there to help.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | December 17, 2023 4:17 AM |
I thought that song was very effective in the film.
Who the hell asked for a new Mean Girls film? Tina come up with something new FFS.

Barf.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | December 17, 2023 4:27 AM |
The jokes on Weekend Update sucked...but it was funny at the end when they read each other's racist jokes.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 17, 2023 4:32 AM |
I couldn't tell if Wiig was in Tampon Farm or Alanis Morrissette. I missed the supposed earlier appearance by her, did she start Botox?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | December 17, 2023 4:33 AM |
Colin trying to get the activist to fist bump his Black Widow joke.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | December 17, 2023 4:35 AM |
Has weekend update degenerated in Black guy writes racist things for white guy to. Say, white guy writes racist things for black guy to say? Are they going to wheel that chair out for the end.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 17, 2023 4:35 AM |
They need finally to modernize next season the already ridiculously outdated one-sided news update dynamic of having only 1 or more male anchors.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 17, 2023 4:41 AM |
R37, they do this a lot. I think the humor, at least for them is watching each other squirm.
WTF. First Mean Girls now The Color Purple? Come into the new millennium you uninspired assholes,
by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 17, 2023 4:42 AM |
That was pretty. Her voice might seem weak, but I guess it really can actually hold its own.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 17, 2023 4:47 AM |
This is actually a good Christmas/holiday episode. They've avoided politics and done all holiday themed sketches.
Say what you will about Billie at least she sings live.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 17, 2023 4:50 AM |
Billy and Kate were perfect cat ladies.
No big laughs, just smiled.
No black lady in a wheelchair.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | December 17, 2023 5:02 AM |
Brava! Good show.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 17, 2023 5:02 AM |
I dozed off for the last couple minutes but woke up in time for the kiss good night. Good show.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | December 17, 2023 5:04 AM |
And the returning cast alumnae showed why they were special—they had personalities, charisma and acting ability instead of just gimmicks and being able to read and perform from offstage cue cards in a very obvious way.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 17, 2023 5:08 AM |
Why did Tampon Farm close?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 17, 2023 5:09 AM |
r46 someone pulled the string.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | December 17, 2023 5:11 AM |
“Going out of business because they sang instead of farming.”
by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 17, 2023 5:26 AM |
R31, a friend of mine who was at the live show said Kate was on oxygen during the commercial breaks and really seemed to be struggling. She had people to help her from the stage after each sketch.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | December 17, 2023 7:34 AM |
A cute show. Not groundbreaking, but entertaining enough.
I don't understand Kristen Wiig's new Brooke Shields eyebrows, and I don't support them.
The return of Kristen, Kate and Maya showed how weak some of the new cast members (Molly Kearney, Chloe Troast) truly are. Just barely passable as characters and reading cue cards.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 17, 2023 7:41 AM |
What type of cancer does Kate have?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 17, 2023 8:31 AM |
R45 honestly. Even when Wiig was cracking up, she still just commands the stage.
This was easily the best show of the season.
I know her whisper annoys most here, but I love Eilish's voice. It's so different and she actually has great control. Also, her Barbie song is a fantastic song both melodically and lyrically.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 17, 2023 9:02 AM |
Seconding R51 . I didn’t even realize she was sick.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | December 17, 2023 10:49 AM |
Kate's father died young of brain cancer. I hope it's not a hereditary thing.
This is very sad. She's a good egg, I hate to think of her life being ended so soon. Does anyone have more info?
by Anonymous | reply 54 | December 17, 2023 1:22 PM |
They're relying too much on cue cards and teleprompters, just reading, reading. The skits seem labored and phoned-in, as if the real fun is backstage. And the 'humor' is high school talent show-level amateurish (the ABBA skit particularly ugly, pointless, badly-executed and unfunny).
And Bowen Yang is not funny, yet someone thinks he's a magic genie who can make every skit a classic. I bet he's a diva backstage, imagining himself thisclose to superstardom. He seems like an IT guy who wandered onto the set.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | December 17, 2023 1:47 PM |
Love Billie Eilish. Thought she did a great job.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | December 17, 2023 2:00 PM |
Is Kate stress eating?
by Anonymous | reply 57 | December 17, 2023 2:03 PM |
The awful Molly Kearny gets around five lines an episode, and she STILL has her eyes glued to the cue cards! A bland performer devoid of character and personality, just a lump in costumes.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | December 17, 2023 2:35 PM |
They STILL has their eyes glued to the cue cards.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | December 17, 2023 2:59 PM |
I just about peed myself at the ABBA sketch.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | December 17, 2023 3:43 PM |
Hi guys. Just popped in to add my unique insight. Bowen Yang isn't funny! I can't be the only one who thinks so.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 17, 2023 3:52 PM |
The ABBA sketch was my favorite thing all this season. And of course THREE of the FIVE performers were former cast members.
Go, Kate!
by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 17, 2023 4:06 PM |
Sorry forgot the link.....
ABBA CHRISTMAS!!!
by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 17, 2023 4:10 PM |
The ABBA sketch was the funniest thing I've seen since I don't know what.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | December 17, 2023 4:11 PM |
R49, I saw her bolt offstage after one of the sketches. She had no trouble moving at all.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | December 17, 2023 4:20 PM |
Wasn't the assertion that she was bolting for the oxygen tank?
by Anonymous | reply 66 | December 17, 2023 4:46 PM |
WTF are you all talking about? The Abba sketch was painfully bad.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | December 17, 2023 4:54 PM |
The ABBA sketch was OK, but it was sub par for a pre-record.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | December 17, 2023 5:06 PM |
And they couldn't bring back Ady Bryant?
Isn't she the only one that went on to streaming success?
by Anonymous | reply 69 | December 17, 2023 5:07 PM |
Being on a streaming series no one watched could hardly be called success.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | December 17, 2023 5:17 PM |
Not watchable after 1979/80.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | December 17, 2023 5:25 PM |
Why does the Abba pitchman have to explain “their signature standing close and facing different directions.” Is the audience too dumb to figure that out? Or are they catering to the sight-impaired?
by Anonymous | reply 72 | December 17, 2023 5:45 PM |
R66, if she's low on oxygen she wouldn't be able to bolt much less sing throughout that four minute sketch.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | December 17, 2023 6:10 PM |
R57 About the stress eating, steroids can cause weight gain.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | December 17, 2023 7:01 PM |
Well, I guess Billie Eilish is gonna win another Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | December 17, 2023 7:08 PM |
Probable an Emmy for special appearance.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | December 17, 2023 8:18 PM |
The cat sketch was pretty funny. The sickle cell sketch, not so much.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | December 17, 2023 10:24 PM |
R31 I wish you would come back and give more info.
Watching the owning monolog again it does look like Kristen is a little emotional over Kate.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | December 17, 2023 11:37 PM |
The cancer thing was a running joke on DL a few years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | December 18, 2023 12:24 AM |
The cancer thing is an obscure DL meme.
Several seasons ago, a poster on the SNL threads was weirdly fixated on the health of the female cast members. Week after week, they would "report" that a female cast member was about to make a "major announcement about a health issue."
Some posters called them out on it and started "reporting" catastrophic health developments among the female cast, such as Kate wearing a wig as herself, so she must be on chemo, and Vanessa Bayer being on oxygen.
Some humorless LChat types saw the posts and, not knowing the context, started freaking out about Kate's "illness" on that site. When informed it was a piss-take, they exploded in righteous indignation. How dare we, those sick DLers, etc.
It wasn't about Kate or cancer, it was about mocking someone trying to spread false gossip.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | December 18, 2023 12:24 AM |
The "horrible health news," never came to pass, of course, and the LChat indignation only served to extend the meme here.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | December 18, 2023 12:29 AM |
The Kate McKinnon thread on the original L Chat was messy most of the time. The posters in that thread disliked most of Kate's SNL cast mates. Cecily Strong was fat shamed in that thread and for a while and there were constant "Is Cecily Strong pregnant?" posts. Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett, Alex Moffat, and Colin Jost were pretty much hated over there. Heidi Gardner wasn't a fave on there especially when she would sometimes have more screen time than Kate. The cast members that the L Chat posters never bitched about were Aidy Bryant, Kenan Thompson, Vanessa Bayer, and Bobby Moynihan. Some people over there liked Leslie Jones and Michael Che and others didn't. The L Chatters were unhappy when former head writers Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider left the show and I think Jost and Che took over again.
When it came to Kate's love life, the L Chat posters didn't like the fact that some of Kate's past girlfriends were almost a decade younger than her. Kate's former girlfriend Marla Mindelle was disliked and there were stories that Marla was a bitch. Some posters like Marla because she was closer in age to Kate. The other hilarious things I remember from L Chat was that they hated when Alec Baldwin started playing Trump on SNL in 2016. There were often posts about Alec being an asshole and they didn't like that Kate and Alec did promotional events together. I also remember they didn't like that Kate sometimes played straight women in movies or TV shows.

When and how did McKinnon get fat-ish?
by Anonymous | reply 84 | December 18, 2023 1:13 AM |
McKinnon is turning 40 soon. Her metabolism has probably slowed down.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | December 18, 2023 1:54 AM |
The fact that the lazy-ass ABBA sketch is being held up as a highlight of the episode just shows how far SNL has fallen.
The only point was that ABBA faced each other in funny, overly intimate ways in the videos.
It's not even 1/10 as good as this French & Saunders sendup from 23 years ago, which tackled that and went way beyond it.
Anyone who's remotely interested in writing sketch comedy knows the F&S sketch, as do sketch comedy fans, because of YouTube.
The SNL writers aren't even trying. No one's pushing them to achieve new takes or excellence, much less next-level satire.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | December 18, 2023 2:41 AM |
Weekend Update was great this week. From Auntie Veronda to the end sketch when Michael brought out the black activist lady.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | December 18, 2023 2:46 AM |
What I want to know is if Jost knew she was just an actress playing a fictional civil rights activist. It's still a funny bit if he did, but if Che managed to pull that off without him being aware it was part of the joke, it becomes a work of genius.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | December 18, 2023 3:22 AM |
I was hoping we’d get a sequel to “Business Inn and Suites and Hotel Room Inn.”
by Anonymous | reply 89 | December 18, 2023 3:36 AM |
The cast situation is very strange.
Marcello Hernandez seems to be a breakout star who's connected with the audience. He had a fun energy on Update and in sketches. His challenge is to prevent being pigeonholed as the show's "ethnic."
Michael Longfellow's dark, cynical thing makes him come off as a baby Norm Macdonald, whom many people worship, and that serves the show well.
The situation is worse on the female side, which is a weird reversal. For decades, the women carried the show. If you saw Molly Shannon, Cheri Oteri, Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, Cecily Strong, or Aidy Bryant in a sketch, you knew it was more likely to work than not, because they had so much talent and energy.
Now the women are very weak. Sarah Sherman seems to be doing well in a variety of parts—including bewildered straight woman, which was Aidy Bryant's role—and Ego Nwodim is occasionally solid, but there's no Wiig, Shannon, Poehler or Strong consistently delivering strong character work. Chloe Fineman was promising at first but she's fading. Molly Kearney is a "why was she hired?" Lauren Holt-type situation.
Which is strange because SNL now has a female director, a female head writer, and many women on the writing staff.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | December 18, 2023 5:33 AM |
R86, they were doing landshark candy-grams in '75. How far have they really fallen?
Actually you'll notice none of the cast look as if they're reading from cue cards. The new cast members may have one line in a sketch and all you see is them looking at the prompter as if that is their main objective. Very amateurish.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | December 18, 2023 5:37 AM |
The camera actually caught a cue card on this week's episode.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | December 18, 2023 5:45 AM |
The writing for the ABBA sketch wasn't good, it was the three ladies, particularly Wiig and Rudoph who made it one of the funniest sketches this season. And I laughed at much of Weekend Update too. And the opening monologue was great as well. And I can't think of another show this season (or last) that was any good.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | December 18, 2023 6:22 PM |
Yeah, the ABBA joke was funny the first time I saw it. In Muriel's Wedding.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | December 18, 2023 7:34 PM |
Kate wasn't funny and neither was the show in general. I expected better. And why is thin-voiced Billie Eilish a star?
by Anonymous | reply 95 | December 18, 2023 8:13 PM |
Although Che and Jost are getting a little tired at this point I thought their annual writing jokes for each other was hilarious. Che bringing out the old black woman in the wheelchair was the icing on the cake.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | December 18, 2023 9:39 PM |
That Abba sketch was lame. I didn't laugh once.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | December 18, 2023 10:15 PM |
R86 thanks for posting the Abba sendup, done right, by French and Saunders. Are they still going?
by Anonymous | reply 98 | December 19, 2023 1:41 AM |
Shoulda done another kidnapped by aliens. Really, Kate, it was needed a hell of a lot more than any more cat shit.
