Fanny and Alexander (1982)

I just watched Fanny and Alexander for the first time and WOW. In the last film he directed, Ingmar Bergman created a masterpiece. The film is a gothic novel of Dickensian proportions come to life.

The film follows to siblings in 1907 Sweden as they encounter joy, sadness, death, cruelty, and eventual revenge.

Starring Bertil Guve, Pernilla Allwin, Ewa Fröling, Jan Malmsjö, Allan Edwall , Erland Josephson, Jarl Kulle, Harriet Andersson, Börje Ahlstedt, and Gunn Wållgren.

It is a little long though, but I'm not sure what could be cut.

R2 HA! I forgot about that, such a silly scene, but it sets up the immaturity of Carl

If you have access to the TV version, the first episode is a perfect Christmas watch. It's worth watching the entire series, which is more interesting than the movie version. Still, the movie is also a masterpiece.

Why did Lickå Sjöman‘s career go straight down the shitter?

by Anonymousreply 6December 10, 2023 6:23 AM

Yes we watch the Christmas episode every year - it’s wonderful.
