Alan Jones, the Australian version of Rush Limbaugh, is accused of sexually abusing young men

He's a hateful, far right douche

Alan (Gloria The Parrot) Jones. This has been known around the traps for 50 years. He'll wish death comes quickly with his on and off cancer troubles. Go Kate McClymont you gem.

His career high point-

Jones was arrested in London in 1988, and charged with “outraging public decency” and “committing an indecent act” over an incident in public toilets in Broadwick Street, Soho.

I accidentally walked into the t-room

by Anonymousreply 8December 8, 2023 11:36 PM

I'm Australian. When I was 18, Jones cruised me at a public toilet block in Neutral Bay where I was shopping. I was alone (no-one else in the toilet block) and using the urinal and he came up behind me very swiftly and was very, very aggressive and determined. I was just having a pee but suddenly knew I was in some kind of danger - I felt very unsafe and alone. He stood behind me and touched my shoulders, back and buttocks and tried to reach around and grab my cock. I zipped up, turned around and looked at him square in the face then he stood in front of me and moved from side to side so I couldn't get around him to leave. I finally got around him and exited quickly so I was out on the street with lots of people. If anyone had be watching the toilet exit they would have seen me "burst" out into the street at nigh pace. He followed me up Military road for a long time but I walked as fast as I could so it became clear I wasn't interested and he eventually gave up. I don't know what he would have done had I been trapped in the toilet block and unable to get away. I had no idea who he was at the time but to this day I'll never forget the ugly crazy look in his eyes. It wasn't until several years later when I saw him on the news about something that I realised who it was with some shock!

Interestingly - that wasn't the first time I had been harassed when using a urinal (some guy had previously tried to sexually assault me at a nightclub but was pulled off by other patrons and then the bouncers - they beat the shit out of him). The outcome of Jones attacking me was that I have never used a public toilet urinal since that day - not at work, public toilets or public facilities. I worked out it was much safer to use a stall.

I'm certain to this day that if I hadn't been able to get away he would have sexually assaulted me. I'll never forget the determination on his face.

So that's my Alan Jones story. I have another story about Graham Kennedy but it wasn't dangerous like it was with Jones.

by Anonymousreply 9December 9, 2023 12:03 AM

R9, I believe you

by Anonymousreply 10December 9, 2023 12:31 AM

Your description makes it sound like it happened last week. What a terrible experience for a young gay man. I hope using stalls and the vivid memory is the extent of how it affected you. 😔

by Anonymousreply 11December 9, 2023 12:42 AM

Thank you R10 and R11. Looking back on what I posted - "cruised" is absolutely the wrong word.

It wasn't cruising - he was going to forcibly sexually assault me. He was in the act of doing it. I will never forget the determination on his face and the aggression. It was like he hated me and was angry at me. Fury was the word I would use. I was terrified. It happened in 1989 and I should have included the date sorry. I was 18. I'm pretty shit at maths but I think he would have been in his late forties when it happened. Maybe 48 or 49? To an 18 year old - he was a gross old lecherous man. Also - I'm 5.8" and he is well over 6 ft so he was much bigger and wider than I was and I just remember him filling every space and holding my arms (biceps) and waist so I couldn't get away from him to get around him and get to safety outside. He was strong. I remember his hard cock pressing on me. I remember he had a dark suit on and I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt because it was summer. It would have been about 10 years later when I saw him on the news and worked out he was the same person who had done that to me in 1989. I was very shocked to learn who he was. I'm 54 now. He's 82 now - I just googled.

I always feel like I had a lucky escape. But he still followed me up Military road for at least 15 minutes. That was scary. What was he going to do if he caught up to me? Over the years, I have wondered if there were others who weren't so lucky and got sexually assaulted or raped. Because I'm pretty sure that if I hadn't been able to get away and Jones had pushed me into a toilet stall as was clearly his plan that he would have raped me. I guess it did have a large impact on me because I never used a urinal again. Weird that that was the outcome. Anyway - fuck him and fuck what he did to me and obviously to a lot of other young males.

I'm sure there are stories from his days as a football coach.

R26 it's conflating two references. Comedian sports broadcasters Roy and HG Nelson called him "The Parrot" when he was coaching rugby and it stuck.

Gloria refers to the Laura Branigan song which Jones played as some sort of theme on his radio program. I never listened (ever!) so I'm not 100% sure how often he used the song but it's definitely where the reference comes from.

Oh look it wasn't that exciting in comparison R27. I'm embarrassed I mentioned it now actually. I met him at a do when I was 23. I wasn't interested but he was and I received a lot of unwanted attention from various sources to try to get me to get involved. He wasn't my thing so I said no but it took a long time for the word no to be heard and understood. It wasn't a bad thing - just a "these things in life happen" kind of thing.

That's his "butler" R32. Otherwise known as his rentboy. They broke up a while ago. Note the age difference. Jones has been a known gay man for a long time but it was never acknowledged or discussed. It's very weird. It just existed and everybody ignored it because he was a nasty old queen who said all the nasty things that the IPA and conservatives wanted to say. If Americans are reading this then it's important to clarify this isn't a question about Jones being gay - he is gay. Openly for decades. The issue is the predatory behaviour towards young boys. I consider myself a boy at 18 when it happened to me.

I was reading up about what has happened with Jones and these allegations. He's got a lot of fucking nerve to threaten to sue Nine for libel. I know for a fact that he's a predator towards young boys. Thank god he's 82. The sooner he goes the way of George Pell the better.

by Anonymousreply 33December 10, 2023 5:50 AM

by Anonymousreply 37December 10, 2023 6:21 AM

He’s a known piece of shit but the only reason that these allegations are coming out now are because he’s off radio, no longer bringing in millions in advertising revenue, and has lost his influence. Used to be one of the most powerful figures in the country. Much like Weinstein - the media only takes out one of its own when they no longer have clout. Otherwise it’s an open secret but nothing is done.

[quote] Alan Jones rescues cash-strapped Thorpe

Olympic swimming legend Ian Thorpe has vowed to bounce back after his personal finances took a hit in the global financial crisis.

He reluctantly confirmed he recently suffered serious cashflow problems after shedding lucrative sponsorship deals to focus on his university studies, News Ltd newspapers say.

When broadcaster Alan Jones became aware of his friend's situation, he rang Westpac boss Gail Kelly to seek her help to restructure Thorpe's financial affairs, News Ltd says.

Thorpe has now streamlined his interests, declaring he wants to lead "a happy and simple life".

"Like my sporting career, one of my strengths is my resilience to bounce back from any setback," he said.

"It was pretty obvious that he wasn't all that well sorted," Jones said this week. "There were a lot of loose ends and he didn't know where all his money and investments were.

"Ian's had no training in this area because he's spent so much of his life in a swimming pool. So I rang Gail Kelly for him. Simple as that.

"Gail got someone from her personal banking unit - who coincidentally lived just two streets away from Ian - and they set up an appointment. He's now got all his finances sorted out in the one area."

Thorpe, 27, recently completed his first year of a double degree in linguistics and psychology, which he found "enjoyable but very challenging".

by Anonymousreply 54November 20, 2024 12:23 PM

Jones was always what we call a big-noter (ie likes to draw attention to his power and his benevolence), and Thorpe had pretty much National Treasure status at the time, so it's possible Jones did this, and publicised it, just to show what a great guy he was and how he could make national bank CEOs jump at his command.

I'm sure he'd have been thrilled if Thorpe fell into his bed, but unless he made that happen when Thorpe was much younger, the physical strength would always have been on Thorpe's side. Thorpe is a very big guy.

by Anonymousreply 55November 20, 2024 1:37 PM

The Jones arrest really is shameful. Rumours like this have been around him ever since he taught, and coached Rugby, at The Kings School a thousand years ago. But successive key authorities (not all of them conservatives) were so scared of the power he wielded on the radio--and quite likely of dirt he had on them--that nobody ever crossed him in ANY meaningful way, never mind contemplating any form of inquiry that could criminalise him. It was very like the effect you-know-who had on the [erstwhile] powerbrokers in the GOP. It's all very well to say you can't investigate someone based on rumour, but what victim would come forward when those in power repeatedly made it clear--in regular radio interviews with him--that as far as they were concerned, Jones was God?

Think how many victims Jones was free to [allegedly] abuse over the years. Arresting him at 83, when he's long retired and has no public voice any more, looks more like a further demonstration of cowardice than it does like justice. It won't even really harm his reputation, in that almost nobody will have been surprised at the charges.

by Anonymousreply 56November 20, 2024 2:30 PM

Don't agree R55. Ian Thorpe isn't pretty enough for Jones. But I do agree that Alan made a show of "rescuing" Ian to make himself look good. Even unattractive boys can serve a purpose.

The accusers they've rounded up will be footballers, athletes and gophers. I doubt there will be any well known people. And just like Kevin Spacey, there are no rape accusations, just incidents of groping from an infamous sleazebag. The media campaign will win (probably has already) but I predict the court case will be a flop.

by Anonymousreply 57November 20, 2024 2:39 PM

by Anonymousreply 61November 20, 2024 10:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 62November 20, 2024 10:53 PM

[quote] What's this about "a high-profile sportsman"?

Honestly it could be anyone. There are so many possibilities. He mentored thousands.

Like Mark Waugh used to date a woman 18 years his senior since he was 19 (her age has been differed over the years). He then dumped her in his 40s and immediately married a horse trainer introduced to him by Alan Jones.

by Anonymousreply 63November 21, 2024 7:02 AM

I wonder if he had a crack at Ian Roberts? Or was Roberts too butch?

It was always interesting that Roberts received surprisingly little (for the era, anyway) overtly homophobic bullshit from, the ARL/NRL, other players or the media. From a logical perspective, no one who values their life would verbally attack an almost 2m tall and 115kg prop forward.

by Anonymousreply 64November 21, 2024 7:09 AM

I saw Ian Roberts in a shop I worked in around the 2000s. He looked like a caveman with a literal lowbrow. All the girls were swooning but he never gave me a second glance presumably because I was older than a twink, whom I heard was his type. I doubt Alan Jones would have messed with him for fear of a knuckle sandwich.

by Anonymousreply 65November 21, 2024 12:13 PM

Can't say I've heard of Josh Szeps, but if this side of the Australian press (that broke the story) is also prepared to publish a defence of Jones, then I can't wait to see what what the right wing press will run with. Here's a taste (which strikes me as a veiled support for pedophilia):

"Szeps lashed the “morally self-righteous” treatment of the “Alan Joneses of the world”, who he said had been demonised for centuries and “persecuted with the full force of the law” when they “express their love or their affection or their, just wanting to get their rocks off, when they express urges in ways that don’t conform to the polite society that they spent their whole life being excluded from”.

Ah, the good old "men can't be sexually assaulted" trope, putting the responsibility on the victim to change their behaviour rather than the offender. Some of you love this viewpoint.

by Anonymousreply 67November 22, 2024 11:42 AM

Josh Szeps is so tiresome and I loved his charming dad’s acting,

Josh is an attention seeking professional contrarian. He would be more overtly right-wing if he wasn’t gay and pro-trans (pro trans women. Nary a word uttered about trans men, of course). He is typical of the “free thinking left libertarian” who took a sharp turn right upon realising that that the racially and culturally downtrodden (black folks, middle easterners) of the post George W. bush-era weren’t interested in showing gratitude to their white liberal betters.

This moron needs to realise than Alan Jones might be the sad gay clown in his Toaster penthouse but he ruled “polite society”. Prime Ministers were terrified of him.

by Anonymousreply 68November 22, 2024 3:03 PM

R66, Henry... come and get your attention seeking son, drag his arse kicking and screaming down the street. WTF?

by Anonymousreply 69November 22, 2024 5:58 PM

[quote] “We ought to temper our righteous fury against the [alleged] perpetrators of crimes, with a recognition that they are in part products of their environment,” Szeps said. “One of the reasons why they behave [the way] they do is because they come from a particular place in a particular time.”

Josh Szeps is virulently anti-Palestinian. No word on if he extends the same generosity to them as he does The Parrot.

by Anonymousreply 70November 22, 2024 6:42 PM

what environment and particular place and time is he saying makes this behavior acceptable?

by Anonymousreply 71November 22, 2024 9:51 PM

R71, exactly. Yes, he grew up in a time when gays were oppressed but so did all eldergays and the vast majority of them manage not to go around grabbing the dicks of 17-year-old boys

He loved opera. For some reason he was at my chorus audition for Opera Australia. After I sang my prepared intense and delicate German lieder he asked if I knew any Gilbert & Sullivan. Dumb me thought he said Gilbert O'Sullivan. Since I didn't want to do another serious song like "Alone Again" or "Clair" I did "Get Down". He was amused.

I don't think that would be much of an act.

Yeah, it's good how lawyers believe (probably rightly) that frail old men draw sympathy, but not the women who were half the size of the guy that jumped them.

by Anonymousreply 93December 7, 2024 1:50 PM

The one time I was called for jury duty, I was not selected. It was for the rape of a mentally disabled man.

After the jurors were selected at random, the defense challenged two elderly women. About 5 elderly men remained in the jury. I thought I would be pissed off if I were them - grandmotherly types are thought to be sympathetic to disabled rape victims, but grandfatherly types aren’t? Jeez, thanks.

by Anonymousreply 94December 7, 2024 3:34 PM

Any defence team would want a majority of males on a rape case.

by Anonymousreply 95December 8, 2024 6:01 AM

Presumably the defense assume that old school men could be convinced that sexual assault charges are really post slap-and-tickle guilt.

There were 5 women of various ages, 5 elderly (well, clearly over-55) men. Our juror numbers were selected at random, other than people making pleas to the judge after hearing the charges and witnesses , there was no interviewing of potential jurors of their views. The two other jurors selected were men under 30 who stood out like sore thumbs. Everyone else was dressed in smart casual - nice jeans or dress pants, boots, sweaters, casual dresses etc. Because these guys looked like they had googled “get me out of jury duty” with their clothing, one was in an ostentatious three piece suit with a briefcase, the other had a Slayer hoodie and shorts.
