Why bother with elections? Recreational weed overwhelming won voter approval on Nov 7, but the MAGA run state decides to rewrite the measure they way THEY want it. You cannot grow ANY weed at home yourself (despite voters deciding you could). Taxes will be 15% (despite voters capping it at 10%). The Republicans also want to gut the THC levels (despite what was voted on). Also the GOP Republicans stated they will be fine if there are lawsuits because that means ZERO recreational weed for anyone, potentially for two years. And our MAGA Governor also agrees with the GOP changes (big surprise).
Ohio Voters Approved Recreational Weed. GOP Legislature guts it.

by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 5, 2023 11:46 PM |
R6 Yes. But you still cannot buy weed.....Possession is legal. Purchasing is not. And the MAGA Loons want to gut the THC levels by 40%. So basically you can buy WEAK weed.

Republicans don’t care about polls or public opinion, just the agenda of the extreme.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 6, 2023 12:25 AM |
R8 So you can't buy it, they want to change it so you can't grow it but you can possess a small amount of weak weed. What's the point. And voters won't care and will vote them back in anyway
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 6, 2023 12:32 AM |
Stupid Republicans could probably use some weed to chill out. Those people are perpetually enraged at everything despite living in one of the world's most prosperous nations.

R7, Ohio is extremely gerrymandered. We are using legislative maps that were declared unconstitutional by the Ohio Supreme Court. It’s really hard to vote Republicans out when they are hand-carving their districts.

One thing you have to say about Florida -- no one here cares what the laws are, so you can smoke or buy as much as you want.
Provided you're white, of course. If you're black (or in some areas, even Hispanic), look out.

They should put a referendum on the ballot that requires any changes made to a previously-passed referendum have to be put up to a referendum of its own.
Let's face it: Republicans hate democracy, particularly the direct democracy of referendums.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 6, 2023 1:37 AM |
To avoid this it would have had to have been a constitutional amendment. Statutes, by their very natures, are subject to amendment.

BIG GOP opposition is because Republicans don't like the "social justice" clause...Which is fancy talk for MINORITY owned dispensaries................"The "Social Equity and Jobs Program" was established by Issue 2. It is designed to fix "the harms resulting from the disproportionate enforcement of marijuana-related laws" and "reduce barriers to ownership and opportunity" to those "most directly and adversely impacted by the enforcement of marijuana-related laws," according to the initiative."

Republicans are just pissed that the constitutional amendment for abortion rights passed, so they are exerting their power on the other issue {that can be changed by the legislature) which passed easily.

They Pukes spent years lining things up so they could get the business when it became legal. Now it has, they want to make sure their investments will pay off. It’s the same virtually everywhere. Jhon Bonner made millions buying weed businesses then moved to make weed legal when he was speaker of the house. A lot of what the pukes do is just business presented as social policy though not everything. You want to know how the world works read the buisness press everyday. Meanwhile Ohioans just need to grow a few in the closet. Modern grow lights are super good and cheap to operate now.

Updated.....ISSUE TWO was the ballot measure to legalize weed.....Final GOP changes----------->>."Sets a six plant limit per household for home grow. Under Issue 2, would be a 12 plant limit. — Sets a 15% flat tax on recreational sale. Under Issue 2, it would be 10%. — Creates a provision that allows any Ohioan who has pleaded guilty to possession of under 2.5 ounces of marijuana to expunge their record. Issue 2 did not specifically reference any expungement. — Limits the maximum THC content for extract to 50%. In Issue 2, that limit was 90%."..................The GOP Legislature gutted the THC potency and hit weed with 15% tax. Trumper Governor DeWine held a press conference earlier today warning of "black market" weed if the GOP Legislature didn't pass the changes. Basically the Republican Party in Ohio changed what was voted on and passed in November.

From cleveland.com:
[quote]Up in smoke: Ohioans can begin growing marijuana at home and won’t be charged for possession of small amounts as a new voter-approved recreational marijuana law takes effect without changes from state lawmakers. Laura Hancock and Jeremy Pelzer report that the Ohio Senate and Gov. Mike DeWine coalesced behind a proposal that included immediate recreational sales at medical marijuana dispensaries, lowering THC concentrations and keeping home-grow in place, but the Ohio House adjourned Wednesday without taking up the bill. Until both sides can agree on changes, the proposal that passed in November is the law of the land.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 7, 2023 1:10 PM |
The Republican Senate wanted to put all sort of controls and restrictions; The Republican House rejected it. House members must feel much more vulnerable to a voter backlash next yr.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | December 7, 2023 1:38 PM |
Well, the Ohio GOP Senate failed thanks to a fearful House. One of the points R42 made — "Trumper Governor DeWine held a press conference earlier today warning of "black market" weed if the GOP Legislature didn't pass the changes." — is actually true only in the inverse (as we've found out in California). Weakening the THC concentration (meaning you have to ingest more for the same effect) and a 15% tax on recreational purchases only drives users to the black market.
If Ohio (and all of the other states viewing legal weed as a cash bonanza) want to see the money, they'll have to do the same thing they did with alcohol and make all of the dispensaries state-owned/run.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 7, 2023 4:16 PM |

They're shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, that fundie nutbag rethugs don't want them smoking weed?
Who could have possibly seen that coming.
However, it's interesting to note that they had enough popular votes to pass, so it also suggests that there's potentially enough popular votes to oust the rethug majority and governor...
by Anonymous | reply 47 | December 7, 2023 5:58 PM |
You can’t buy weed in DC either but that’s no problem. You buy some cheap token like a sticker or wristband and then receive a corresponding amount of cannabis as a lagniappe.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 7, 2023 6:05 PM |

If you have genes for schizophrenia, smoking weed will trigger it. People still think weed isn’t dangerous but it can be. That being said, if people want to destroy their bodies on their own time, so be it.
