R28 I remember when that particular show came out. I didn’t get to see it. He annoyed me when he had the run in with the cops. Of course I am not justifying the actions of those idiot cops (don’t really like police) but his subsequent behavior seemed more like “I’m Henry Louis Gates, superior being” and not being upset about the racial bias. I hope I’ve explained this properly. And he had that same attitude on his FINDING YOUR ROOTS show.

Back to Cornel. I always liked him and he’s been an ally to the LGB community. I’m shocked that he’s broke and the reasons why he’s broke. Didn’t he have a financial advisor?

He and Gates used to hang out together around Princeton. I used to see them out together around town.

There have always been professors like cornel. When I started to work in university research I was naive. I thought that the policy of the university was actually how things were practiced. Some people are so open minded that their brains fall out. Also, there is a subcategory of idiots that justify lack of loyalty to partners because they tricked the partners into a monogamy scam. Why not just say you are a playboy or confirmed bachelor or not the marrying type? He is a pathological virtue signaler

I don't think Henry Louis Gates is an asshole. I watch his show on PBS "Finding Your Roots" religiously - and I think I've seen most of his other series. They all were very informative, well-researched and even-handed.

He seems really approachable and nice - but then again, he's dealing with celebrities on FYR.

HLG was THE African-American history scholar before Cornel West and genuinely a star for decades in academia. What happened to him in Cambridge was disgusting - he was treated like a criminal trying to get into his own house.

Cornel West has always sucked up all the air in every interview and show he's been on. I've never seen HLG do that.

Gates was my prof at Cornell, yes, bottom of the Ivy League. He never taught at Princeton so I guess was visiting Prof. West. West was a guest lecturer at Cornell. As I said above, West strikes me as someone who is playful in life and also his academic mind is playful. It seems to me he has been a successful "public intellectual" while Gates is only a "famous professor". Gates isn't a much of a historian, that's an artifact of his academic career ambitions, and as a literary theorist, meh. Signifying Monkey is typical American high-deconstruction period careerist claptrap. He has a couple notions but a lot of gobbledegook. Gates is a careerist in everything, such a dogged yet snobby striver. As for semiotics, deconstruction, critical theory, very few American professors of that era got it right - to be playful with it, not so goddamn humorless and political. Unfortunately they trained another generation of American academics with lower IQs who are even less clear-thinking, broadly informed, and intellectually playful. Jodie Foster did right to learn it for a couple years then get out and do something else with her mind and life.

I don't think Gates is "asshole" and he is polite when necessary. I wrote R37. His late career books can be good such as Stony the Road. Which is good "popular" history for the general reader. He principally identified through his education and career as a literary critic then his shift into historian has obviously been more successful and well received. The kind of literary criticism he was trained to do and was doing is more Continental political economy and philosophy applied to literature and I don't think he was successful. Popular accessible history - way much more so.

Cornel West IS a political economist and philosopher, through and through, and applied his dexterous mind to a successful run as a public intellectual which requires intellectual and social playfulness. America doesn't have many public intellectuals.

Having briefly interacted with both of them, I'd say Gates seems more like the asshole. West is more like a tortured soul. But I'm not an expert or anything. Gates didn't teach at Princeton, but he was at IAS, also located in Princeton, for a while. West is a serious scholar, whether you like him or not. I think he kind of went crazy.
