Name 3 Of The Greatest English Speaking Comedies Of All Time

While I would love to add Jaques Tati and Dino Risi ( The Easy Life, a masterpiece blending comedy and drama), please keep your choices to comedies written and spoken in English. English!.

My obvious choices:

Safety Last.......Some Like It Hot......What's Up, Tiger Lily? (A truly underrated Woody film. The search for the greatest egg salad recipe is hilarious)

"Safety Last" is a silent movie. Not sure how that qualifies as "English-speaking."

Death Becomes Her

Well, the subtitles are in English. Don't be so literal! And that is a GREAT movie comedy.

Woody Allen’s What’s Up Tiger Lily probably contains the best “gay” joke ever written by a straight writer

One character refers to another male character in passing as “Snow White” and when asked why, says in a sassy black queen voice, “Oh he too much! Someday his prince will come!”

I do t get “What’s up Doc”. I find it hectic and totally unfunny. Yes Ryan is hot so there is a reason to watch it. Agree with almost all the others.

I get it, r19, but the problem is that Barbra and Ryan are no Hepburn and Grant.

His Girl Friday, Some Like It Hot, Hobson's Choice

agree R19 I don't think I laughed once. Better off watching Bringing Up Baby to see what Bogdanovich was trying to do. Katherine Hepburn is delightful in it. Streisand was annoying.

Some Like It Hot

I abhor that movie. Men dressing as women has always been a cheap ploy in comedy.

by Anonymousreply 28December 2, 2023 2:43 AM

That image in OP — Woody Allen leering at the ass of a young Asian woman in pajamas — didn’t age well.
