Exactly. I admire more the performers who recognize that it's time to turn a page and so something else and/or step out of the realm of performance. Going out in a high note is admirable, performing when you look and sound like a fucking ghoul is pure ego.

With age should come some right to doing what you please and doing it for your own enjoyment, not to please others. But goddamn, when you step in a stage in front of thousands or millions, have a shred of respect for people who knew you at your best. Sing a few lines of one song for sentimentality's sake if you must, but sing it yourself, there's no shame in that, there's even a poignance if not beauty to showing how an old voice sounds and doesn't sound like it's younger self. But FFS, do it without a huge orchestra of musicians and technicians and wig stylists and surgeons and mortuary science majors.

Recognize what you can and can't do, don't ask old fans and people who've ni fucking idea who you are to indulge you in some ghoulish, garish display.

Well the other performers sure looked like they are aging gracefully and naturally!

It's hard to age and be famous. This anecdote from the new Elizabeth Taylor biography made me think a lot of him:
