Shane McGowan is DEAD to me!

He's been on my list for years.

He checked out just in time to avoid hearing his own insufferable song a million times this month.

by Anonymousreply 1November 30, 2023 11:13 AM

Hey I liked that song! It mentioned faggots.

by Anonymousreply 2November 30, 2023 11:13 AM

He really was beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 3November 30, 2023 11:14 AM

Christmas Number One in UK guaranteed

by Anonymousreply 4November 30, 2023 11:16 AM

His sister, Rose, must be devastated.

She was raped.

by Anonymousreply 5November 30, 2023 11:18 AM

Him and Sinead in the same year is depressing. RIP, even if it’s shocking he lasted this long.

by Anonymousreply 6November 30, 2023 11:19 AM

Pffff. Christmas Classic? I've never heard it. Media culture will shart out anything and everything to fill up a day with clicks. Never heard of Shane McGowan, either.

Of course, if you haven't heard of something, then it must not be true, r7!

by Anonymousreply 8November 30, 2023 11:22 AM

Oh, man. What an inexorable end.

I loved the Pogues and their louche Irish music and ways - I’m surprised Shane lasted this long.

by Anonymousreply 9November 30, 2023 11:25 AM

Thank God it's not Shane Klingensmith!

by Anonymousreply 10November 30, 2023 11:26 AM

This was published just four days ago. 😬

R7 = Idiot

by Anonymousreply 12November 30, 2023 11:27 AM

I always thought his band were fucking awful.

by Anonymousreply 13November 30, 2023 11:29 AM

R7

Sharts out his opinion (which is fine) then shares a video with 325,000 likes. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 14November 30, 2023 11:32 AM

He was a great songwriter. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 15November 30, 2023 11:32 AM

R13 prefers One Direction.

by Anonymousreply 16November 30, 2023 11:53 AM

R16 - hardly. They're fucking awful too.

I'm more of a Kraftwerk man, so no wonder I don't have time for boybands or diddly-dee music.

by Anonymousreply 17November 30, 2023 11:59 AM

I appreciated the Pogues more than I liked them. And yes, Shane burned his candle at both ends so his passing was not entirely a surprise.

There's some poetic grace in the fact that he followed his friend Sinead.......

And of course this means Fairytale will have a good chance at another run on the UK Holiday charts.

by Anonymousreply 18November 30, 2023 12:00 PM

R18, there is no "poetic grace" in a famously troubled man following a famously troubled woman in death four months later.

I loved both of them as performers, followed McGowan since the late 1970s and O'Connor since her popular start He burned his candle not at both ends but by throwing it into a bonfire. The Pogues at their best were a perfect fusion of Irish rage and sap poured into traditional formats shaken with a rock sensibility. O'Connor was a tortured Cassandra.

If one wishes to offer commentary, perhaps something other than cant serves, because otherwise one sounds like a frau being self-important.

by Anonymousreply 19November 30, 2023 12:08 PM

Where is it a classic Xmas song? UK? 300K likes is not many. For comparison purposes, the completely forgotten band The Waitresses nevertheless have a classic with Christmas Wrapping, at 6.3 million views.

As opposed to a twat with a thesaurus being self important.

by Anonymousreply 21November 30, 2023 12:15 PM

He was married to Ruth Buzzi? At R11

by Anonymousreply 22November 30, 2023 12:19 PM

Shane will be in heaven, with Rosalynn Carter.

Aren't all ends inexorable?

by Anonymousreply 24November 30, 2023 12:19 PM

How could his wife stand to kiss that yuckmouth?

by Anonymousreply 25November 30, 2023 12:23 PM

Did anyone else imagine r7 would turn out to be signed "Mariah Carey"?

by Anonymousreply 26November 30, 2023 12:29 PM

R25, he got new teeth.

Piss off, infected cunt at R19.

by Anonymousreply 29November 30, 2023 2:19 PM

R20 yes, it's a bit more popular in the UK.

But there must be multiple videos on YT of Fairytale - no way it only has 300K, maybe one posting of it does.

by Anonymousreply 30November 30, 2023 2:20 PM

Not sure what "300K" represents, r30, but this video has 89M views:

r31 I was referring to R20's comment....and yes, thanks for finding that and posting it, I knew it had to have been seen by more people.

by Anonymousreply 32November 30, 2023 2:27 PM

Damn, what a shame. The Pogues had made several really good albums. Yes, drink destroyed his liver and teeth and overall health. I was talking about him to a friend just recently and we both marveled that he was still living. RIP Shane.

by Anonymousreply 33November 30, 2023 2:28 PM

It was one of the most crazy violent shows I've ever been to. Just a big mass of brawling drunks. It was kind of great.

by Anonymousreply 34November 30, 2023 2:38 PM

I misread it as Shawn Mendes.

Speculating that R7's obituary will include the story that he once as an adolescent strayed five miles from Hayseed Holler, but he cried and carried on so that they drove him back into town, and there he lived out the rest of his days.

I've Never Heard of Something, So It Can't Possibly Have Any Value to Anyone Else On Earth!

Amazing he made it to 65

by Anonymousreply 38November 30, 2023 3:10 PM

I hope he kept the receipt.

by Anonymousreply 39November 30, 2023 3:17 PM

[quote] Pffff. Christmas Classic? I've never heard it.

Fairytale of NY was voted the top Christmas song for years in the UK.

“Fairytale of New York" is the most-played Christmas song of the 21st century.[4] It is frequently cited as the best Christmas song of all time in various television, radio, and magazine-related polls in the UK and Ireland,[5][6] including the UK television special on ITV in December 2012 where it was voted The Nation's Favourite Christmas Song.[7]” - Wikipedia.

The female lead in the song is also dead, having been run over by the boat of a multimillionaire in Mexico.

And let’s not forget poor Delores O’Riordan of the Cranberries died in 2018. That era of musicians has a high mortality rate.

He’s fug so no gay rumors. Vag only.

by Anonymousreply 42November 30, 2023 3:30 PM

He looks like he smells llike all the drugs and drink imbibed in a nightclub when the lights finally come up.

by Anonymousreply 43November 30, 2023 3:42 PM

[quote] The female lead in the song is also dead, having been run over by the boat of a multimillionaire in Mexico.

Yes. She has a name. Kirsty MacColl was an amazing singer, songwriter and artist and it's a crime that some rich asshole in Mexico killed her (gross negligence on his part) and got away with murder.

December 18th will be 23 years since her untimely death.

by Anonymousreply 44November 30, 2023 3:43 PM

Those new teeth didn't get a lot of work before their retirement

by Anonymousreply 45November 30, 2023 3:58 PM

He really is hard to look at…yikes.

That being said, I liked his voice and he had an interesting life.

by Anonymousreply 46November 30, 2023 4:11 PM

The old guy in this has really interesting eyes.

Ronnie Drew! He's sadly no longer with us either.

by Anonymousreply 48November 30, 2023 11:31 PM

For the looks of it he died before that OP photo was taken.

by Anonymousreply 49December 1, 2023 12:49 AM

Pooor Dolores O’Riordan. Why would anyone name their child Dolores? It means “pain/sorrow.” You’re doomin* them from birth.

by Anonymousreply 50December 1, 2023 4:00 AM

Loved him. Rest in peace.

by Anonymousreply 51December 1, 2023 7:32 AM

R24

He was dying and in poor shape for years. But your reply reminds me of this goofy Fletch scene:

DR. DOLEN I'll bet. Shame about Ed.

FLETCH (vamping) It was. Really a shame. To go so suddenly.

DR. DOLEN Oh, he was dying for years.

FLETCH Sure, but the end was so sudden.

DR. DOLEN He was in intensive care for eight weeks.

FLETCH Yes, but the very end, when he actually died, that was extremely sudden.

[quote]Those new teeth didn't get a lot of work before their retirement

He had the implants for 8 years, which is pretty good considering they have to be replaced every 10-20 years.

by Anonymousreply 53December 1, 2023 9:18 AM

I have only one questia. Did a toothbrush ever touch that guy's teeth?

by Anonymousreply 54December 1, 2023 9:24 AM

He probably grew up never properly brushing his teeth. The alcohol just added to it.

by Anonymousreply 55December 1, 2023 10:47 AM

Sinead and Shane…Beauty and the beast.

He did drugs too; I think the combination of dry-mouth from drug use and not brushing probably did most of the damage, not the alcohol.

by Anonymousreply 57December 1, 2023 4:06 PM

Yep, it's the drugs. Remember how bad David Bowie and Keith Richard's teeth used to be?

The other one I’m surprised is still around is Sean Ryder from Happy Mondays. Profiles of the band always catalogued what substances he was on. Lost his teeth too due to heroin and crack addictions. He’s 61 now.

by Anonymousreply 59December 1, 2023 8:18 PM

And yet Pete Doherty lives!
