“Wonka” is getting RAVE reviews

The early reviews are in and they’re mostly all very positive, calling the film an instant Holiday classic and Timmy is getting amazing reviews.

OP= Timothee Chalamet

by Anonymousreply 1November 28, 2023 10:59 PM

The early (read: studio picked critics) reviews for Flash were good too

by Anonymousreply 2November 28, 2023 11:15 PM

You knew the critics were going to be friendly to it. His PR has great relationships with all the Hollywood rags. Ultimately, whether or not it will have legs at the box office is going to depend on word of mouth.

by Anonymousreply 3November 28, 2023 11:21 PM

It’s predicted to make little money at the box office.

by Anonymousreply 4November 28, 2023 11:22 PM

Mouseface McRatboy is a Revelation! I Laughed! I Cried! I Shat My Depends!

by Anonymousreply 5November 28, 2023 11:23 PM

We shall see r4. Those predictions are wrong all the time

by Anonymousreply 6November 28, 2023 11:23 PM

What makes it a "holiday" classic other than its release date?

by Anonymousreply 7November 28, 2023 11:26 PM

Critics are dishonest all the time. For the past several years they've been paid to praise Mouseboy as the greatest thing to ever happen to Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 8November 28, 2023 11:26 PM

These sound like gushing from selected fans rather than critics. Even the comments they picked say the movie is far from perfect.

by Anonymousreply 9November 28, 2023 11:37 PM

No one expects it to be perfect r9. No movie is perfect these days.

by Anonymousreply 10November 28, 2023 11:42 PM

I'm waiting til hear from Lynn Stairmaster before I make up my mind!

by Anonymousreply 11November 28, 2023 11:44 PM

Sounds like Chalamet may sneak into the Oscar race. Seems clear he’ll at least get a GG nomination.

by Anonymousreply 12November 28, 2023 11:51 PM

R12: At best he gets a GG nomination and doesn't even deserve that from what I've seen in the clips and trailers.

by Anonymousreply 13November 28, 2023 11:52 PM

The critics also RAVED over the Johnny Depp remake. There were lots of "truer to the book", etc. but the audiences didn't agree. In the end, the audiences will decide.

by Anonymousreply 14November 29, 2023 12:34 AM

The Johnny Depp one was a blockbuster

by Anonymousreply 20December 11, 2023 12:54 AM

Timmy'd be for more believable as the glum Rat who can't carry a tune in a bucket, taking it out on the Chipmunks.

by Anonymousreply 21December 11, 2023 1:07 AM

by Anonymousreply 22December 11, 2023 1:07 AM

R19 ummm ok? It still has mostly good reviews lmao

by Anonymousreply 23December 11, 2023 1:07 AM

But, r23, the OP claimed "RAVE," all caps. Even you, amidst your laughter, must recognize that "mostly good reviews" do not "RAVE" reviews make.

The majority of critics also say that Hugh Grant basically steals the movie. Which would be fine, were the movie's title "Oompah."

by Anonymousreply 24December 11, 2023 1:42 AM

The GG nominations are out. "Best Male Actor in a Comedy or Musical" looks like a set-up for Timothee.

IDK, though. I've seen only "Air," and I am a fan of Matt Damon, but a GG for this role? Nope.

by Anonymousreply 25December 11, 2023 7:28 PM

R25: I think it will go to either Giamatti or Wright. Remember Wonka didn't get in for Best Comedy or anywhere else. If Mouseboy does previal, then the GG will just confirm to everybody what a bought and paid for, shameless cheeseball organization they really are.

by Anonymousreply 26December 11, 2023 7:34 PM

Timmy was right up/down there with JLaw's nomination for No Hard Feelings.

by Anonymousreply 27December 11, 2023 7:39 PM

Is this a proper musical? Songs throughout rather than a few songs in the beginning half then jack shit until the end?

by Anonymousreply 30December 11, 2023 10:17 PM

r29, I might see it then if the songs continue through the middle and to the end. I don't need it to be ALL music, but I don't like it when the songs are all bunched up at the beginning.

by Anonymousreply 31December 11, 2023 10:37 PM

Even Beach Blanket Bingo had songs all the way to the end.

by Anonymousreply 32December 11, 2023 10:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 36December 12, 2023 7:16 AM

R36, your Timmy would shit on you rather than look at you, trust me.

by Anonymousreply 37December 12, 2023 3:57 PM

Why would a co-star of an actor "trash" him, r36? Wouldn't that potentially hurt their movie?

by Anonymousreply 38December 13, 2023 12:08 AM

I like Tim a lot but have absolutely no interest in this film.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 49December 14, 2023 6:44 PM

So I saw it last night. I enjoyed it. This would be my recommendation: If you like Timothee Chalamet and musicals, you will like this. If you don't like either or both of those things, you will hate it. Chalamet is the whole movie and it's a sweet musical.

by Anonymousreply 50December 15, 2023 4:35 PM

So it's for fans of Timothee Chalemet. Well, I can see that point, r50, as Austin Butler is the only reason I will go to see "Dune: Part2," Timmy's lead role notwithstanding. I otherwise pretty much dislike most Sci-Fi movies.

Interesting that you say Chalamet is "the whole movie," given the crowded cast (especially Hugh Grant). Nothing more to add? His singing? Acting? Comparison to Gene Wilder or Johnny Depp? Charm? Whimsy?

Are you a fan of musicals (the actual director said "Wonka" is NOT a musical, but whatever)? I haven't read any praise whatsoever for the score. "Hummable" was the highest, FWIW.

To me, "it's a sweet musical" means I would find "Wonka" utterly boring treacle.

by Anonymousreply 51December 15, 2023 6:29 PM

Some reviews say this is the best of the Willy Wonka films, and others say the plot is a convoluted mess with forgettable songs. Some reviews say he's great and not derivative of Wilder and Depp, and others say he's miscast and lacks the charm/playfulness required for the role. I agree with the poster: if you like him and musicals, you will like this. If you hate him and/or musicals, you will probably hate this.

by Anonymousreply 52December 15, 2023 7:20 PM

It has an 82% positive on RT. So I would say it’s getting mostly good reviews r52. It isn’t as 50/50 as you’re making it sound. Most are saying it’s a charming and delightful surprise.

by Anonymousreply 53December 15, 2023 7:29 PM

R53: I'm not an expert in Rotten Tomatoes or other ratings system but I did see that it has a 65 on Metascore.

by Anonymousreply 54December 15, 2023 7:34 PM

OP it has 65 Metascore based on 53 reviews. It may be getting a few raves but on average it's just average. Unlike the 1971 film Wonka will be best appreciated by young kids.

by Anonymousreply 55December 15, 2023 7:44 PM

I wonder if it will flop once people figure out it’s a musical. They really have hid that in the advertising.

by Anonymousreply 56December 15, 2023 9:20 PM

R56 It's one of the few live action Christmas releases for young kids and I suspect it will do well at the box office.

r90 Because he's willing to do whatever it takes to succeed and the industry establishment likes people who will play their games. Plus his family have good connections. by Anonymousreply 97December 16, 2023 10:46 PM

[quote]generally, when someone is cast as the lead in a musical they can do more than carry a tune.

Occasionally someone is cast as the lead in a musical and can't even do that.

by Anonymousreply 98December 16, 2023 11:10 PM

I saw Wonka today. It's a charming, fun, sad, great middle of the road, family holiday film.

I wanted to be really smitten by it, but I wasn't.

And no, Chalamet's singing and dancing, such as it is, doesn't impress, BUT, for me, I can't deny it- Chalamet charmed me, he appealed to me.

Chalamet earned my respect. He went whole hog on playing Wonka. His performance is earnest, straightforward, no hedging behind a knowing, ironic wink.

by Anonymousreply 99December 17, 2023 12:52 AM

[quote]His performance is earnest, straightforward, no hedging behind a knowing, ironic wink.

Given the character of Wonka, isn't that actually a massive failure though? In fairness to him, I think the blame for that belongs more with the writers and the Dahl estate who are clearly so terrified of being cancelled that they want everything to be bland and harmless now.

by Anonymousreply 100December 17, 2023 1:30 AM

I'll defer to your greater knowledge of Dahl's work, r100.

I've never read the book. I do know from what I've viewed of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" that, indeed, Gene Wilder's Wonka has an edgy, almost air of sinister about him.

This Wonka is devoid of any of that, however, it is an origin story, set when he's idealistic and young. Perhaps that's a betrayal of Dahl's creation of Wonka, but, I'll bow out of any argument about that since I haven't read the book.

by Anonymousreply 101December 17, 2023 1:45 AM

I don’t think I’ll see Wonka, but if Timmy does a musical about his Tiny Horse, I’ll go see it.

by Anonymousreply 102December 17, 2023 1:48 AM

I watched it last night and was entertained but it lacks the bite of the Wilder version. This Wonka is just a determined underdog who perseveres against a corrupt chocolate lobby. It's more Dickens than Dahl, with a dash of Dr. Seuss. Hugh Grant's Oompa Loompa is the most interesting because we've never seen an Ooompa Loompa with any kind of individuality before. He gets the funniest moments and lines although it's difficult to see how such a character would translate to the Oompa Loompas we know from previous versions.

I don't know how the director can claim it's not a musical because there are musical numbers throughout. Timmy isn't much of a singer but the songs are tailored to his limitations with the supporting cast doing a lot of the work. Kids will probably like it but I can't see it becoming a classic.

by Anonymousreply 103December 17, 2023 3:29 AM

Does he sing "Pure Imagination"?

by Anonymousreply 104December 17, 2023 3:35 AM

Yes, r104

by Anonymousreply 105December 17, 2023 3:51 AM

r103, you said much better what I tried to convey in my post at r99.

Yes, it's a musical. How that can be denied, I'll never know, especially by the director.

I posted either in this thread or another Wonka thread that, from the trailers alone, they reminded me of those UK over-produced musicals "Oliver!" and "Scrooge" from the 60s and 70s.

Not saying that's a bad thing, but still.

It's not a gangbusters opening, but it's pretty good for the December weeks before the holidays. December holiday released films have a stealth success in that even the ones that open with less than spectacular numbers can make it up in the two weeks of holiday vacation time.

My tween daughter wanted to see this, so we went this afternoon. It was an okay movie. As an "origin story" it was completely different from the previous two movies (Wilder, Depp) but it wasn't horrible. It wasn't great either. It was a pleasant way to waste a couple hours while my kid had fun.

None of the actors had too much work to do, I think. Nobody stuck out as particularly good or bad. The story became predictable early on and there were no twists in the thin plot. It was simply a small confection. I doubt it has any legs at all. Since it was cheapo day at Regal, I only spent $11.98 on two tickets, so I think I got my money's worth. BTW, the huge theater was sparsely filled.

Austin has always been jealous of Timmy's career.

How did Shazam! do at the People's Choice award? Seems people didn't choose to see it. $134M worldwide gross against a production budget of $110-125 million

Anything for Brie Larson or The Marvels despite that fact that it underperformed at the BO grossing $206M worlwide against a production budget of $274 million. Wonka's domestic gross is $207 million and it's still in over 2,300 theaters

and did Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom despite a 42 Metascore win anything?

by Anonymousreply 385February 19, 2024 7:48 PM

did the highly acclaimed Killers of the Fower Moon score despite the fact that anyone I know who saw it said it was a chore to sit through and an hour too long? Its domestic gross is $67M which at least covers the 40M Leo was paid.

Warner Bros. Discovery stock plunges as movie flops ‘The Color Purple,’ ‘Aquaman’ sink earnings -Story by Alexandra Steigrad

Warner Bros. Discovery on Friday reported worse-than-expected quarterly earnings — due in large part to box office flops from its movie studio — sending the media giant’s shares plummeting 10%.

However, studio business revenue sank 17% in the fourth quarter, following lackluster results from highly-anticipated releases such as the musical version of “The Color Purple,” featuring Fantasia Barrino and Taraji P. Henson, and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” starring Jason Momoa.
