You knew the critics were going to be friendly to it. His PR has great relationships with all the Hollywood rags. Ultimately, whether or not it will have legs at the box office is going to depend on word of mouth.

It’s predicted to make little money at the box office.

What makes it a "holiday" classic other than its release date?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 28, 2023 10:26 PM |
Critics are dishonest all the time. For the past several years they've been paid to praise Mouseboy as the greatest thing to ever happen to Hollywood.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | November 28, 2023 10:26 PM |
These sound like gushing from selected fans rather than critics. Even the comments they picked say the movie is far from perfect.

R12: At best he gets a GG nomination and doesn't even deserve that from what I've seen in the clips and trailers.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | November 28, 2023 10:52 PM |
The critics also RAVED over the Johnny Depp remake. There were lots of "truer to the book", etc. but the audiences didn't agree. In the end, the audiences will decide.

But, r23, the OP claimed "RAVE," all caps. Even you, amidst your laughter, must recognize that "mostly good reviews" do not "RAVE" reviews make.
The majority of critics also say that Hugh Grant basically steals the movie. Which would be fine, were the movie's title "Oompah."
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 11, 2023 12:42 AM |
The GG nominations are out. "Best Male Actor in a Comedy or Musical" looks like a set-up for Timothee.
IDK, though. I've seen only "Air," and I am a fan of Matt Damon, but a GG for this role? Nope.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 11, 2023 6:28 PM |
R25: I think it will go to either Giamatti or Wright. Remember Wonka didn't get in for Best Comedy or anywhere else. If Mouseboy does previal, then the GG will just confirm to everybody what a bought and paid for, shameless cheeseball organization they really are.

by Anonymous | reply 49 | December 14, 2023 5:44 PM |
So I saw it last night. I enjoyed it. This would be my recommendation: If you like Timothee Chalamet and musicals, you will like this. If you don't like either or both of those things, you will hate it. Chalamet is the whole movie and it's a sweet musical.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 15, 2023 3:35 PM |
So it's for fans of Timothee Chalemet. Well, I can see that point, r50, as Austin Butler is the only reason I will go to see "Dune: Part2," Timmy's lead role notwithstanding. I otherwise pretty much dislike most Sci-Fi movies.
Interesting that you say Chalamet is "the whole movie," given the crowded cast (especially Hugh Grant). Nothing more to add? His singing? Acting? Comparison to Gene Wilder or Johnny Depp? Charm? Whimsy?
Are you a fan of musicals (the actual director said "Wonka" is NOT a musical, but whatever)? I haven't read any praise whatsoever for the score. "Hummable" was the highest, FWIW.
To me, "it's a sweet musical" means I would find "Wonka" utterly boring treacle.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 15, 2023 5:29 PM |
Some reviews say this is the best of the Willy Wonka films, and others say the plot is a convoluted mess with forgettable songs. Some reviews say he's great and not derivative of Wilder and Depp, and others say he's miscast and lacks the charm/playfulness required for the role. I agree with the poster: if you like him and musicals, you will like this. If you hate him and/or musicals, you will probably hate this.

I saw Wonka today. It's a charming, fun, sad, great middle of the road, family holiday film.
I wanted to be really smitten by it, but I wasn't.
And no, Chalamet's singing and dancing, such as it is, doesn't impress, BUT, for me, I can't deny it- Chalamet charmed me, he appealed to me.
Chalamet earned my respect. He went whole hog on playing Wonka. His performance is earnest, straightforward, no hedging behind a knowing, ironic wink.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | December 16, 2023 11:52 PM |
[quote]His performance is earnest, straightforward, no hedging behind a knowing, ironic wink.
Given the character of Wonka, isn't that actually a massive failure though? In fairness to him, I think the blame for that belongs more with the writers and the Dahl estate who are clearly so terrified of being cancelled that they want everything to be bland and harmless now.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | December 17, 2023 12:30 AM |
I'll defer to your greater knowledge of Dahl's work, r100.
I've never read the book. I do know from what I've viewed of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" that, indeed, Gene Wilder's Wonka has an edgy, almost air of sinister about him.
This Wonka is devoid of any of that, however, it is an origin story, set when he's idealistic and young. Perhaps that's a betrayal of Dahl's creation of Wonka, but, I'll bow out of any argument about that since I haven't read the book.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | December 17, 2023 12:45 AM |
I don’t think I’ll see Wonka, but if Timmy does a musical about his Tiny Horse, I’ll go see it.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | December 17, 2023 12:48 AM |
I watched it last night and was entertained but it lacks the bite of the Wilder version. This Wonka is just a determined underdog who perseveres against a corrupt chocolate lobby. It's more Dickens than Dahl, with a dash of Dr. Seuss. Hugh Grant's Oompa Loompa is the most interesting because we've never seen an Ooompa Loompa with any kind of individuality before. He gets the funniest moments and lines although it's difficult to see how such a character would translate to the Oompa Loompas we know from previous versions.
I don't know how the director can claim it's not a musical because there are musical numbers throughout. Timmy isn't much of a singer but the songs are tailored to his limitations with the supporting cast doing a lot of the work. Kids will probably like it but I can't see it becoming a classic.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | December 17, 2023 2:29 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 105 | December 17, 2023 2:51 AM |
r103, you said much better what I tried to convey in my post at r99.
Yes, it's a musical. How that can be denied, I'll never know, especially by the director.
I posted either in this thread or another Wonka thread that, from the trailers alone, they reminded me of those UK over-produced musicals "Oliver!" and "Scrooge" from the 60s and 70s.
Not saying that's a bad thing, but still.

It's not a gangbusters opening, but it's pretty good for the December weeks before the holidays. December holiday released films have a stealth success in that even the ones that open with less than spectacular numbers can make it up in the two weeks of holiday vacation time.

My tween daughter wanted to see this, so we went this afternoon. It was an okay movie. As an "origin story" it was completely different from the previous two movies (Wilder, Depp) but it wasn't horrible. It wasn't great either. It was a pleasant way to waste a couple hours while my kid had fun.
None of the actors had too much work to do, I think. Nobody stuck out as particularly good or bad. The story became predictable early on and there were no twists in the thin plot. It was simply a small confection. I doubt it has any legs at all. Since it was cheapo day at Regal, I only spent $11.98 on two tickets, so I think I got my money's worth. BTW, the huge theater was sparsely filled.

Timothée Chalamet in his alligator brown chocolate suit.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | December 18, 2023 1:43 AM |
The film seamlessly blends together story and music, as Chalamet finely sings the song “Pure Imagination” from the 1971 film and this film’s lesser new song “A World of Your Own,” The sentimental film is enjoyable as solid family fare and makes for a candy-colored colorful watch.

Warner Bros/Village Roadshow/Heyday Films’ Wonka had a sweet weekend with an estimated $39.1M in 77 overseas markets for a jump of 17% from last session. The offshore cume is now $244.4M with global at $386.9M (which includes domestic’s Monday estimate). Increases were seen in France (+92%), Netherlands (+60%), Germany (+40%), Italy (+29%), Argentina (+29%), Mexico (+20%), Australia (+12%) and Spain (+8%). It will likely pass The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes as the seasonal victor by next weekend, as its gross will be over $160 million through New Years Day. But with potentially a floor of at least $180 million domestic, it would actually be the only film to outgross Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour since its release and the highest-grossing film at the box office since the Barbenheimer phenomenon. That will make it one of the top 10 films of the year domestically.

Sorry, r371. But no.

It was never going to win the BAFTA. It's so unusual for a family film to be nominated for Outstanding British Film that the nomination is enough of an honour. It's similar to the way that it's a massive achievement for the creator when the occasional animated film is nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, but there's no realistic chance of a win.

Warner Bros. Discovery stock plunges as movie flops ‘The Color Purple,’ ‘Aquaman’ sink earnings -Story by Alexandra Steigrad
Warner Bros. Discovery on Friday reported worse-than-expected quarterly earnings — due in large part to box office flops from its movie studio — sending the media giant’s shares plummeting 10%.
However, studio business revenue sank 17% in the fourth quarter, following lackluster results from highly-anticipated releases such as the musical version of “The Color Purple,” featuring Fantasia Barrino and Taraji P. Henson, and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” starring Jason Momoa.

New sci-fi film replaces Shawshank Redemption as IMDb's top film ©Warner Media
The 1994 flick has lost its crown Dune: Part Two, which has been deemed 'visually thrilling' and 'narratively epic' by critics days before its official release on March 1. The Warner Bros movie has a 9.4 rating on IMDB from viewers who went to an early screening of the Sci-Fi epic on Sunday, along with a 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Pre-release ratings are notoriously manipulated and non-organic. Studios have the means to jack these things up to entice the opening weekend. Let's see if it stands the test of time after thousands of moviegoers review it and not just studio shills.

I watched it this past weekend and it was okay. I didn't realize it was a haphazard-ish musical, because ole boy can't really sing. I also don't know what I think of Wonka's origin story. I don't think I needed it. My biggest complaint is with the video game cut scene visuals that reminded me a lot of the Kingsman movies and their artificial PS5 tones. By comparison, the visuals and effects in the Dune movies are very refreshing, and felt real and weighty. Something that's been a bit undone from so much MCU overload. It's easy to dunk on TC especially here on DL, but I don't hate the guy. I just don't get what the big deal is. He's okay.
