I read the book in 1971, and twice in subsequent years. At first, I hoped Reuven and Danny would go for each other's Kosher cock. Their relationship was otherwise so intimate. But such was not the case. Same with the movie, which I watched again not long ago. Somehow, I can't quite rid myself of the urge to see Robby Benson and Barry Miller going full cocksucker on each other.
The first guy I fell in love with was Modern Orthodox. He didn't wear the Orthodox clothing, but he was horrified when I told him I'd fallen for him. "Boys can't do that with other boys. Boys don't..." And just like that, the friendship was over.
