OMG OP!! It looks like it's a lot of fun to be a baby skunk!

The word skunk is dated from the 1630s, adapted from a southern New England Algonquian language (probably Abenaki) seganku, from Proto-Algonquian *šeka:kwa, from *šek- 'to urinate' + *-a:kw 'fox'. Skunk has historic use as an insult, attested from 1841.
In 1634, a skunk was described in The Jesuit Relations:
The other is a low animal, about the size of a little dog or cat. I mention it here, not on account of its excellence, but to make of it a symbol of sin. I have seen three or four of them. It has black fur, quite beautiful and shining; and has upon its back two perfectly white stripes, which join near the neck and tail, making an oval that adds greatly to their grace.
The tail is bushy and well furnished with hair, like the tail of a Fox; it carries it curled back like that of a Squirrel. It is more white than black; and, at the first glance, you would say, especially when it walks, that it ought to be called Jupiter's little dog. But it is so stinking and casts so foul an odor, that it is unworthy of being called the dog of Pluto.
No sewer ever smelled so bad. I would not have believed it if I had not smelled it myself. Your heart almost fails you when you approach the animal; two have been killed in our court, and several days afterward there was such a dreadful odor throughout our house that we could not endure it. I believe the sin smelled by Saint Catherine de Sienne must have had the same vile odor.

R5 That source extract invites a giant MARY!!! Or should I say, Maria!!! Mater Dei
by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 20, 2023 4:32 PM |
Lol R6.
It's from Wikipedia.
I had a good laugh too, because it's such a fussy description.
The Jesuit Priest who wrote it, does indeed sound like a huge MARY!
He even cites Catherine of Siena, a moniker used by our very own Erna (aka Mrs Patrick Campbell, aka Catherine of Siena).

When I lived near Houston, nearly 20 years ago, a mama skunk had babies underneath our deck. We decided to avoid the back door/deck for a while, instead of calling a professional to remove them. They were so cute to watch, and you never smelled them.
One time my partner forgot, and took a business call and paced around the deck. Out come the little ones to check him out. They didn’t spray him or anything, just stood around and stared up. He didn’t move a muscle, they decided he was boring, and moved on.

R8, did you decide he was boring too?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | November 20, 2023 6:08 PM |
Lol, R9, still with him.

When I was 23 years old I ran over ( by accident of course) a skunk 🦨 in my driveway with my Buick Electra . I felt bad about that.

R11, was the smell as our Jesuit Priest described?

I don't know which would be worse, the smell of a family of skunks, or the shit that I just took in my pants when I encountered them.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | November 20, 2023 7:54 PM |
I didn’t know skunks make noises. They sound like little Ewoks 🤗
by Anonymous | reply 14 | November 20, 2023 7:58 PM |
I didn't know they had no skunks in Europe.

Baby:" Mama, this guy smells worse than we do."
Mother: " Run away quickly before we get cooties."

Awwwww, OP, I LOVE this. And thanks for reposting; I never saw the first skunk post you made.
Reminds me of the 2nd week after moving to Boulder CO, when my new friends and I made a trek into the Flatirons before heading to the theater to see [italic]Stand By Me.[/italic] I saw a big, GORGEOUS skunk, and while my two partners retreated, I stood pat and just watched it. Wish I had pics.

Thanks, OP! I couldn't help smiling -- so cute!

I have wanted a pet skunk for the LONGEST time. Apparently, when descented, they make terrific pets, and their temperaments are something between a cat and a dog, They are very playful and cuddly and can be easily litter trained.

Ugh, they’re so cute. The way they all run up together with their beautiful coats shimmying in motion…I love the baby skunk videos that show the kit (I think?) learning how to stomp its paw.

R26 And there are no cats in America!

I love the way skunks throw their tails up in case they need to spray. I had a friend years ago who had a pet skunk he bought from a pet shop. The skunk's scent gland had been surgically removed but he would still throw that tail up in a flash if he detected any danger.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 21, 2023 5:30 PM |
I had a pet skunk as a kid (and a raven) and they're like ferrets, still kind of stinky but they don't spray when 'descented'. Sweetest little things
by Anonymous | reply 30 | November 21, 2023 5:34 PM |
I don't buy that they make good house pets. I can imagine them ripping shit apart constantly. No thanks.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 21, 2023 7:03 PM |
Once I met a family of skanks and made they famous!
