Far right Argentinian nutjob Javier Milei is elected President

Oh Argentina...what have you done.

Does every country have to have their own Trump?

What were the people reacting to, that they'd elect him, OP?

by Anonymousreply 1November 19, 2023 10:43 PM

Thanks, OP. Proof that not all Argentine men are sexy!

by Anonymousreply 2November 19, 2023 10:44 PM

It’s like all the countries right at about America or below it are copying us.

by Anonymousreply 4November 19, 2023 10:48 PM

When your opponent is the Economy Minister and inflation’s 140%, the far-right nut job saw an opening.

Terrible drought down there, too. Things suck - something like 20% of people live in poverty - and people desperate for change. Not the one I’d want: dollarization and OrganDepot where you can sell body parts.

by Anonymousreply 8November 19, 2023 10:55 PM

Does mean the economy will finally be fixed? Will this president just say "fuck it" to all the countries Argentina owes money to. Granted, do countries ever really repay everything they owe?

by Anonymousreply 9November 19, 2023 10:55 PM

He believes in small Government

Argentina has been a basket-case for as long as I can remember, and I'm old.

by Anonymousreply 11November 19, 2023 10:56 PM

They all believe in small government, R10, and the proceed to bloat it, especially with nepotism.

by Anonymousreply 12November 19, 2023 11:00 PM

Poverty, r1. The economic situation is pretty dire.

It's frightening, OP. Obrador in Mexico is particularly scary being right next door. I posted this news in one of the threads about Putin's invasion of Ukraine, but was poohed, poohed. ("So what? We're talking about Ukraine) An extra 47 diplomats (ie. Spies) At a time all other countries were expelling Russian diplomats, Mexico was being packed.. No bueno, no bueno at all.

I'm no conspiracy theorist, but I believe that the caravans were Putin's handiwork. His agents splashed a little cash on impoverished, desperate people with no education or access to decent media or information and played their ignorance, likely telling them about warm welcomes and jobs aplenty.

We live in such sad, dangerous times.

Argentina usually votes for far left idiots, I guess they just wanted to swing to the other side of the pendulum for once.

He wants to put Argentina on the American dollar. Buckle up, folks.

Argentinians make some of the best gay films available.

Maybe not so much, anymore.

by Anonymousreply 18November 19, 2023 11:08 PM

He wants to:

Ban abortion but legalise selling your kids (?)

Legalise selling your organs

Legalise Drugs

Change the currency to USD

He hates Pope Francis but loves Thatcher (not the most beloved figure in Argentina given the sinking of the Belgrano).

But he's 51 and unmarried and said his sister will be the First Lady of Argentina. Anyone else think he might smell cookies?

With headlines like "Over 18 million people unable to afford basic needs in Argentina," the "populist" presidential candidate ran on a platform that included legalizing selling organs and banning abortion. WTF?! I don't think I've heard anything more cynical from a politician. 😭 Even Trump, FFS.

by Anonymousreply 29November 19, 2023 11:26 PM

He’s a libertarian-free market conservative. The populist lost.

by Anonymousreply 30November 19, 2023 11:29 PM

Populism does vary from place to place—but I’ve always understood Peronism as a populist movement. From my understanding, the president-elect kinda turned over the usual political theories within Argentine politics…others will know more than I.

From Wikipedia:

[quote]Peronism, also called as justicialism, is a labour and left-wing leaning Argentine political movement based on the ideas and legacy of Argentine ruler Juan Perón (1895–1974). It has been an influential movement in 20th and 21st century Argentine politics. Since 1946, Peronists have won 10 out of the 13 presidential elections in which they have been allowed to run.[2]

My meditation teacher is in BA, I congratulated him after the primary elections showed Milei behind for dodging a bullet, and he said they weren't out of the woods yet, lol.

He looks like a juvenile clown. Shake his closet and see what skeletons come rattling out.

by Anonymousreply 70November 20, 2023 10:17 AM

Easy to mock Argentinians, but people are desperate.

I believe that the options that held the office these few last years, who failed to address inflation, sharp real wage downfall, housing crisis, will be punished.

Sometimes people will give protest votes to clowns, but voters are not the ones to blame, but the corporate shills that held the office.

In case of Poland, the opposite happened, people got rid of extremely conservative right government that ruled there for ages. Millions used to protest against abortion ban for a decade, but that didn't put the end to them, but terrible housing crisis did. Poland has strong economy and growth, but I guess, corporate extra profit and billionaires doubling their billions are not enough to console people who are unable to pay the rent.

Identity politics is important in good times, but when people can hardly afford food and roof over their head it becomes irrelevant. And people will make self destructive choices, because they want to punish the government. Remember how high inflation brought Hitler and Milošević to power.

Chatted with an Argentinian colleague this morning and he said that this is a desperate nation trying to change its course. The party in power had been unable to do anything to improve the situation so people voted for change.

He gave me an interesting account of how one of the first cuts would be the government’s subsidizing public transportation which amounts to a very small amount and with the deepening economic crisis people need that help but instead it will be cut.

by Anonymousreply 76November 20, 2023 4:47 PM

[quote] He gave me an interesting account of how one of the first cuts would be the government’s subsidizing public transportation which amounts to a very small amount and with the deepening economic crisis people need that help but instead it will be cut.

So people can't drive cars because there's a gas shortage in the country.

MEANING, that they would probably have to take public transportation to get to work, and go shopping, etc.

And this DUMB SHIT is going to cut funding for public transportation?

Well that's just fucking brilliant. Great job, Argentina!

You really are as stupid as you look.
