What were the people reacting to, that they'd elect him, OP?
|by Anonymous||reply 1||November 19, 2023 11:43 PM|
Thanks, OP. Proof that not all Argentine men are sexy!
|by Anonymous||reply 2||November 19, 2023 11:44 PM|
It’s like all the countries right at about America or below it are copying us.

When your opponent is the Economy Minister and inflation’s 140%, the far-right nut job saw an opening.
Terrible drought down there, too. Things suck - something like 20% of people live in poverty - and people desperate for change. Not the one I’d want: dollarization and OrganDepot where you can sell body parts.
|by Anonymous||reply 5||November 19, 2023 11:51 PM|
r3 like what?
|by Anonymous||reply 6||November 19, 2023 11:53 PM|
This one stings because this isn't the far right being helped by FPTP or winning the PR math. This is a clear majority of votes in a runoff.
Thanks again neolibs. Good job handing the world to these vulturous charlatans.

RWNJs up the wazoo in the borderline first world. However you want to put it. It’s not the countries doing better than America it’s the ones that are borderline first world. You know, the ones with a Gucci belt.
|by Anonymous||reply 8||November 19, 2023 11:55 PM|
Does mean the economy will finally be fixed? Will this president just say "fuck it" to all the countries Argentina owes money to. Granted, do countries ever really repay everything they owe?
|by Anonymous||reply 9||November 19, 2023 11:55 PM|
He believes in small Government
|by Anonymous||reply 10||November 19, 2023 11:56 PM|
Argentina has been a basket-case for as long as I can remember, and I'm old.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||November 19, 2023 11:56 PM|
They all believe in small government, R10, and the proceed to bloat it, especially with nepotism.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||November 20, 2023 12:00 AM|
Poverty, r1. The economic situation is pretty dire.
It's frightening, OP. Obrador in Mexico is particularly scary being right next door. I posted this news in one of the threads about Putin's invasion of Ukraine, but was poohed, poohed. ("So what? We're talking about Ukraine) An extra 47 diplomats (ie. Spies) At a time all other countries were expelling Russian diplomats, Mexico was being packed.. No bueno, no bueno at all.
I'm no conspiracy theorist, but I believe that the caravans were Putin's handiwork. His agents splashed a little cash on impoverished, desperate people with no education or access to decent media or information and played their ignorance, likely telling them about warm welcomes and jobs aplenty.
We live in such sad, dangerous times.

Argentina usually votes for far left idiots, I guess they just wanted to swing to the other side of the pendulum for once.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||November 20, 2023 12:04 AM|

Maybe not so much, anymore.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||November 20, 2023 12:08 AM|
He wants to:
Ban abortion but legalise selling your kids (?)
Legalise selling your organs
Change the currency to USD
He hates Pope Francis but loves Thatcher (not the most beloved figure in Argentina given the sinking of the Belgrano).
But he's 51 and unmarried and said his sister will be the First Lady of Argentina. Anyone else think he might smell cookies?

FYI, his party will have 35 seats out of 257 in the Chamber of Deputies, and 7 out of 72 in the Senate. The sky won't be falling anytime soon.

|by Anonymous||reply 28||November 20, 2023 12:22 AM|
With headlines like "Over 18 million people unable to afford basic needs in Argentina," the "populist" presidential candidate ran on a platform that included legalizing selling organs and banning abortion. WTF?! I don't think I've heard anything more cynical from a politician. 😭 Even Trump, FFS.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||November 20, 2023 12:26 AM|
He’s a libertarian-free market conservative. The populist lost.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||November 20, 2023 12:29 AM|
I guess I associate populism with the right wing extremism, a la MAGA now, r30, especially when it's faked for personal gain.
|by Anonymous||reply 31||November 20, 2023 12:37 AM|
R30 What do you think that word means?
|by Anonymous||reply 32||November 20, 2023 12:38 AM|
Populism does vary from place to place—but I’ve always understood Peronism as a populist movement. From my understanding, the president-elect kinda turned over the usual political theories within Argentine politics…others will know more than I.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||November 20, 2023 12:41 AM|
R32 populism does not equal free markets or libertarianism.

[quote][R16] you couldn’t be more wrong. Peronism is not leftist by any stretch.
[quote]Peronism, also called as justicialism, is a labour and left-wing leaning Argentine political movement based on the ideas and legacy of Argentine ruler Juan Perón (1895–1974). It has been an influential movement in 20th and 21st century Argentine politics. Since 1946, Peronists have won 10 out of the 13 presidential elections in which they have been allowed to run.

First Wiki is hardly the arbiter. But I’ll take the bait—why don’t you keep reading that link where it goes on to say it is not necessarily leftist at all, and specifically calls out different terms, including populist, as being just as, or more, relevant.

My meditation teacher is in BA, I congratulated him after the primary elections showed Milei behind for dodging a bullet, and he said they weren't out of the woods yet, lol.
We were joking about that self- help poem "Autobiography in 5 Short Chapters" and how, if it was about Argentina, Chapter V. would be, "I walk down the same street and fall in the same hole yet again."

You can't fix stupid.
Argentina will get what it deserves.
The complete collapse of it's country, and disastrous poverty.
Coupled with insane social policies.
They'll be eating each other for food, soon.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.

They said the same about the election of Orban. It hasn't played out that way.
BTW: we had lefties like Sean Penn, Michael Moore and Oliver Stone pay tribute to Hugo Chávez and Maduro.
"Sean Penn added ,"Venezuela and its revolution will endure under the proven leadership of vice president [Nicolas] Maduro.""*
(Hugo Chavez's hand-picked successor)

Argentina voted for a leader who WIELDS A CHAINSAW at political rallies.
I mean, he won a majority of the votes.
They can never call themselves a civilized country, ever again
A FUCKING CHAINSAW!

Being a "strong supporter" of Ukraine and Israel is NOT a plus and won't win him enough financial support from the US to make a difference in terms of the country's deepening financial morass. And I believe he's planning on rejecting membership in BRICS? Bad move.

Ukraine+Israel-liberal, conservative, centre

|by Anonymous||reply 70||November 20, 2023 11:17 AM|
Easy to mock Argentinians, but people are desperate.
I believe that the options that held the office these few last years, who failed to address inflation, sharp real wage downfall, housing crisis, will be punished.
Sometimes people will give protest votes to clowns, but voters are not the ones to blame, but the corporate shills that held the office.
In case of Poland, the opposite happened, people got rid of extremely conservative right government that ruled there for ages. Millions used to protest against abortion ban for a decade, but that didn't put the end to them, but terrible housing crisis did. Poland has strong economy and growth, but I guess, corporate extra profit and billionaires doubling their billions are not enough to console people who are unable to pay the rent.
Identity politics is important in good times, but when people can hardly afford food and roof over their head it becomes irrelevant. And people will make self destructive choices, because they want to punish the government. Remember how high inflation brought Hitler and Milošević to power.

You need dollar reserves to do that and Argentina ran out of those earlier this year, it had to start settling their debt in yen.

Chatted with an Argentinian colleague this morning and he said that this is a desperate nation trying to change its course. The party in power had been unable to do anything to improve the situation so people voted for change.
He gave me an interesting account of how one of the first cuts would be the government’s subsidizing public transportation which amounts to a very small amount and with the deepening economic crisis people need that help but instead it will be cut.
|by Anonymous||reply 76||November 20, 2023 5:47 PM|
[quote] He gave me an interesting account of how one of the first cuts would be the government’s subsidizing public transportation which amounts to a very small amount and with the deepening economic crisis people need that help but instead it will be cut.
So people can't drive cars because there's a gas shortage in the country.
MEANING, that they would probably have to take public transportation to get to work, and go shopping, etc.
And this DUMB SHIT is going to cut funding for public transportation?
Well that's just fucking brilliant. Great job, Argentina!
You really are as stupid as you look.
|by Anonymous||reply 77||November 20, 2023 5:50 PM|
Yes, R77, and lack of transportation options pushes people further into poverty. Oh, Argentina…
