Presidents - sitting or former - rarely go to the funerals of former First Ladies, R14. Unless the First Lady is Eleanor Roosevelt.

A great lady and a Great First Lady who worked relentlessly for, to name a few: the poor; mental (and physical) health); those without homes and millions without hope here and around the world.
Rest In Peace, Mrs. Carter. Your life set a wonderful example for your country. Thank you for your service.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 19, 2023 8:39 PM |
I’m bringing Bill with me to the funeral because I am not sitting next to Michelle.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 19, 2023 8:40 PM |
My sympathies, OP. I also had an oops in the headline when I posted the original thread on this topic. Or not. There's no timestamp on this site -at least not that I know of. Rather than mention the Third Reich, I'll just add my condolences to Jimmy and the Carter family. And to America, which has lost a shining example of how to be and what to do in and out of the White House.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | November 19, 2023 8:43 PM |
R29, I doubt either of the Clintons will go. The Carters and Clintons got along like oil and water.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 19, 2023 8:45 PM |
They will attend -out of respect for the office at the very least. It's a very tiny sacrifice, and one that doesn't get asked very often. The real question will be if a Trump will dare to show up.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 19, 2023 8:47 PM |
Our country has more tears ahead shortly. As many stated upthread, President and Mrs. Carter were rarely from each other's sides in life and in love. He will be joining his beloved soon. God bless them both.

I actually think all former potus and First Ladies will attend the funeral (except Trump, no one wants his disgusting ass there) along with Joe and Jill of course. Just based on their humantarian work, and the longevity of their lives. It’s not like Barbara or Nancy dying, who didn’t do shit for anyone that was poor and suffering.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | November 19, 2023 8:52 PM |
Whatever happened to his HILLBILLY WHITE TRASH brother?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | November 19, 2023 8:52 PM |
Jimmy Carter, long now blind, hasn’t been seen in public for some time. I don’t think his health will enable him to attend the funeral.

R31, Didn’t Carter criticize Clinton during the Lewinsky thing?
by Anonymous | reply 40 | November 19, 2023 8:53 PM |
R38, Billy died, young like his non-Jimmy siblings, in the ‘80s. Like their father, all of pancreatic cancer.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | November 19, 2023 8:55 PM |
Didn't everybody, R40? It's the past. The Ex-President Club is a very small, elite group. The Clintons will attend.

She and Jimmy were two really good people. RIP Mrs Cater
by Anonymous | reply 43 | November 19, 2023 8:56 PM |
Remember when Rosalynn told Mike Wallace on “60 Minutes” that Ronald Reagan made Americans feel comfortable with their prejudices?
Mike was a bit stunned and gave her an opportunity to walk it back, but she did not.

I had an aunt and uncle who were together for 60+ years--when my aunt died, her husband joined her a few days later. I think this'll be a similar situation.
RIP Rosalynn, you were a wonderful first lady. And Jimmy should've had a second term, except he was fucked over by Reagan with the Iran hostages situation. Truly good people--what anyone labeling themselves a Christian should aspire to.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | November 19, 2023 9:29 PM |
R31 I will guarantee you the Clintons will be there. You're right, they were oil and water for a long time, but in the past 20 years those feelings had faded, and Bill and Hil were fond of them, admired them, but no they were never friends. I suspect Jimmy won't be far behind. I'm reminded of an old bible verse,"I go to prepare place for you..." RIP, Rosalynn. It's about time media acknowledged her role. I remember the controversy the media fed when Rosalynn attended cabinet meetings, and when she asked for and got an office and a staff in the East Wing. That had not been done before.

All living First Ladies will attend the funeral, which will likely be in Georgia, not in DC. That includes Hillary Clinton. Representatives of the families of past Presidents will also be invited, such as members of the Ford, Johnson, and Kennedy families.
And Van Jones was not married to President Carter's daughter Amy, but to Jana Carter, no relation.

I fondly remember an encounter with the former First Lady when Mrs. Carter climbed through my kitchen window with a quart of chili. She almost stepped on my shelter cat Miss Sissy Boodles before scurrying away, chased by two Secret Service Agents.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | November 19, 2023 11:10 PM |
Jimmy and Rosalynn were huge fans of Royal Caribbean Cruises (imagine the Secret Service letting even a former First Couple on a cruise ship these days), and Rosalynn even christened one of their ships. Back in my travel agent days when I was more plugged into cruise industry message boards, I read more than one story from women who went to exercises classes onboard during the 80s and would be working out alongside her.
I can maybe see Michelle Obama and Jill Biden doing something like that, amongst the regular folks, but Hillary, Laura Bush or the Varist Lady? Absolutely not.

Hunny Jimmy and Rosalynn probably have everything all planned out for their funeral including who will speak and what kind of hymns. When Jimmy has his homegoing, he will lie in state at the Carter Center for two or three days, then go to Washington for a couple of days, then back to Plains for the actual funeral service and burial.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | November 20, 2023 12:32 AM |
I think I mentioned this in a prior thread, but since its founding, Brooks Brothers made bespoke suits for every president except two.
One was Ronald Reagan, who preferred the work of his fancy Hollywood tailors.
The other was Jimmy Carter, forever a man of the people, who bought off the rack.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | November 20, 2023 12:35 AM |

You learn very quickly that there is no handbook or rules to being First Lady. Technically, it’s not even an official position. And while there are spoken and unspoken expectations that provide some structure, the role is largely shaped by the passions and aspirations of the person holding it.
First Lady Rosalynn Carter understood that well.
Guided by her abiding faith and her commitment to service, Mrs. Carter used her platform in profoundly meaningful ways. Her groundbreaking work to combat the stigma faced by those struggling with their mental health brought light to so many suffering in silence. She advocated for better care for the elderly. She advanced women’s rights. And she remained a champion for those causes — and many others like building affordable housing for those in need and caring for our nation’s caregivers — in the more than four decades that followed.
When our family was in the White House, every so often, Rosalynn would join me for lunch, offering a few words of advice and always — always — a helping hand. She reminded me to make the role of First Lady my own, just like she did. I’ll always remain grateful for her support and her generosity.
Today, Barack and I join the world in celebrating the remarkable legacy of a First Lady, philanthropist, and advocate who dedicated her life to lifting up others. Her life is a reminder that no matter who we are, our legacies are best measured not in awards or accolades, but in the lives we touch. We send our thoughts and prayers to Jimmy and the entire Carter family during this difficult time.

Regarding what r59 wrote— Rosalynn did the White House tour with Nancy in 1980, but Nancy, true to form, acted like a cunt. From the Kitty Kelley book:
“The traditional tour of the White House for the future First Lady, conducted on November 20, 1980, had been especially uncomfortable for Rosalynn Carter, who was still smarting from her husband’s humiliating defeat.
“It was awkward, totally awkward,” recalled Mary Finch Hoyt, Mrs. Carter’s press secretary. “I felt so protective of Rosalynn at that point, having somebody just come into your house and open up your closets, which is exactly what happened. … After all, Mrs. Carter was still First Lady, and the White House was still her home.”
Another Carter aide was shocked to hear Mrs. Reagan say, “Where are the closets? Betty Ford says you’ve got some great closets around here. That’s what I’d like to see first. The closets.”
“Mrs. Carter was cordial,” continued Mary Hoyt, “but it was difficult for her, especially when she tried to describe the history of some of the rooms and all Nancy Reagan wanted to know about was the closet space. Mrs. Carter was quite shocked by that
. Later she said, ‘All she cared about was the closets. That’s all she cared about. Closets. Closets. Closets.’ I think that was the point where Rosalynn turned the tour over to the chief “usher, Rex Scouten, who finished escorting Mrs. Reagan through the state rooms.
Then Mrs. Reagan insisted on coming back two more times with her decorator, Ted Graber, to go over the floor plans and check out the closets again. They came once while the Carters were at Camp David.”
In briefing the press later, (press secretary ) Robin Orr said Mrs. Reagan had been shown everything “except for two of the kids’ rooms, which Mrs. Carter said weren’t tidy enough to be seen.”
Mamie Eisenhower was a cunt to Jackie on their tour. Jackie was recuperating from JFK Jr’s birth and was using a wheelchair at the time if she had to walk long distances. Jackie’s people asked for a wheelchair to be available in case it was needed. When Mamie heard, she refused to allow this and made Jackie walk the length of the White House with her.

You know, context is everything. When Eleanor was First Lady running all over the place and making speeches,, writing a newspaper column, it was completely unheard of, especially for a woman of her class. And she topped it off by being the first chairman of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. I think we need to expand our search. The media either overlooks Harris or makes fun of her. Determined to promote the impression "no one likes her" or that she is incompetent. I am not going to take the bait. And remember how they trashed Amy? Kamala is really is doing a very good job. I follow her on instagram and twitter and her husband too. I also follow Hillary, and the Bidens. I follow the Obamas. I follow Pete and Amy. If all you do is depend on the so called mainstream media you will not get anything resembling a decent perspective. The media is all about hype, promoting fear and division and controversies. Klobuchar is great, but we need her in the Senate and I hope to God Schumer steps aside in 2025 so she can assume a leadership role. Kamala and Elizabeth Warren together would make a great ticket. Right now we have to make sure Sherrod Brown gets re elected in Ohio. Ruben Gallegos in Arizona (He's primarying Sinema.) And Who ever replaces Feinstein. There's a couple more. Manchin. On that topic, Rosalynn Carter gave a speech at Betty's memorial (not her funeral) which used to be online in its entirety and it was quite beautiful. As many know in their post-Presidential years the Fords and the Carters developed a deep friendship. “Deborah had done nursing training before her marriage so she read up all the books she could find, searching for information about Caesarean birth. "It seems to be there is a whole area that doctors just don't know about. That's why they try to make me afraid." One encouraging fact was that Ethel Kennedy had all of her 11 children by Caesarean.
By the time her seventh baby was born, Laser treatment was being used during the operation which speeded up the healing of her wound. "I bounced back and came home on the third day," she said.“

Patrick was born via cesarean in 1963. Her five pregnancies had resulted in only two living children.”

Trump's rants grow more violent and more vicious and threatening every single day. The rants of someone who is clearly unstable and disturbed. So I'm fine with Joe stumbling on a name now and then. Joe's slip ups are not indicative of anything. I'm in my 60's and I sometimes have problems remember the names of my nieces and nephews. R258, I've read several books about Nixon, or his role in various messes, and I've also read he was abusive, not necessarily physically, but more like a psychological and emotional abuser. And a drunk. He and Pat were alcoholics. Another secret hidden from the public. You know, with all these former Trump aides coming forward talking about how dangerous he is and he shouldn't be POTUS, they always cite some incidents or situation in the WH where they alone prevented some major catastrophe. Now I don't doubt them, and I'll safely bet Trump's WH was even worse than described, but it made me think about these previous PResidents and how they had serious flaws that we never heard about.

Mrs. Carter's funeral(s) will begin on Monday the 27th. On Monday she'll lay in repose at Ga. Southwestern Univ. in Americus, Ga.. Then on Tuesday she will be taken to the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta to lay in repose there with a funeral service held at Glenn Memorial Church on the campus of Emory University/Atlanta. She will then be returned to Plains for a 2nd funeral on Wednesday at their local church, with burial on the Carter family home grounds.

I wonder if Jimmy will be able to attend the Service? I'm going to say yes, he will be at their local Church in Plains. But I don't think he will make the rest of the journey. Although he might just go to the Carter Center briefly. I also wonder if Andrew Young will show up He is in his 90's now and in a wheel chair. May not be up to it, but he is certainly a very close friend. Jimmy appointed him Ambassador to the U.N. and he was a Congressman from Georgia before he was Mayor.

Jimmy stopped his cancer treatments, probably in an effort to let Rosalynn go first. That kind of love story is rare but knowing it happens gives this crusty old curmudgeon hope.

This neighbor friend from Plains says she cooked for them several times a month for years, and the other day Jimmy had some spaghetti after Rosalynn passed on. She cooked a big batch for the family and she'd be cooking Jimmy some bacon and eggs today. So it seems like, to me, Jimmy is able to eat solid foods etc. and his hospice decision is more one about not wanting to go to the hospital and get treated for anything, instead just stay home and be comfortable. Palliative care.

Theodore White, the chronicler of US presidential campaigns for decades through the 1980 election, wrote that there were only four candidates he covered he was sure were faithful to their wives. I can’t remember the fourth one, but the other three - I believe - were Harry Truman, George Romney & Jimmy Carter.
by Anonymous | reply 285 | November 24, 2023 8:29 PM |
I was mistaken. There were not four faithful men, only the three I named:
"The acceptance of casual partners was a part of politicians’ lives, White wrote in his memoir. Among the scores of politicians he knew, he said he was reasonably certain that only three — Harry Truman, George Romney and Jimmy Carter — 'had denied themselves the pleasures' of extramarital liaisons."

Btw ^^^: here is the highly respected Columbia Journalism Review out with a new report that says:
[quote] Political coverage at even the largest and most consequential newspapers consists almost exclusively of horse race reporting and campaign gossip. Actual issue and policy examinations were nearly nonexistent.”
[...]
[quote] We found that the Times and the Post shared significant overlap in their domestic politics coverage, offering little insight into policy. Both emphasized the horse race and campaign palace intrigue, stories that functioned more to entertain readers than to educate them on essential differences between political parties. The main point of contrast we found between the two papers was that, while the Post delved more into topics Democrats generally want to discuss—affirmative action, police reform, LGBTQ rights—the Times tended to focus on subjects important to Republicans—China, immigration, and crime.

The pic of JFK with Truman in R182’s link reminds of the great quote from Truman in 1960 about candidate JFK. The famously anti-Joe Kennedy made it clear that it wasn’t JFK’s Catholicism that troubled him. “It’s the pop, not the Pope,” Truman emphasized.

The subject of Mrs. Carter’s death came up in a conversation I had with a woman who works for a family member. One thing led to another with her expressing her understanding that it was a requirement that a president be married. I said no, the Constitution only requires that you be at least 35 & a naturalized US citizen.
by Anonymous | reply 317 | November 28, 2023 3:37 AM |
R316. The pont is that although those other positions are arguably greater accomplishments, you don’t get the kind of prominence from them that you get from being First Lady. R320 et Al, from Wikipedia:
The U.S. Constitution uses but does not define the phrase "natural born Citizen" and various opinions have been offered over time regarding its exact meaning. The consensus of early 21st-century constitutional and legal scholars, together with relevant case law, is that natural-born citizens include, subject to exceptions, those born in the United States. As to those born elsewhere who meet the legal requirements for birthright citizenship, the consensus emerging as of 2016 was that they also are natural-born citizens.[2][3][4]
It definitely is confusing, but I believe McCain and Romney were born in US territories, so they are considered natural-born citizens.
by Anonymous | reply 323 | November 28, 2023 1:21 PM |
R323, Romney was born in Mexico to missionary Mormon Americans. McCain was born to an American military couple stationed outside the then-48 United States. But wherever he was born, he or someone similarly situated would be eligible to be president.

I remember when this came up about Governor Jennifer Granholm, and even earlier about Kissinger. Granholm was a favorite of Bidens when he was VP. He appointed her our Energy Secretary. But when she was governor of Michigan she was an up and coming Democratic star, and speculation rose asto her eligibility to run for POTUS. She was born in Canada to Canadian parents. She was Canadian until she became an American citizen. Same with Kissinger, back in the 70's, when he had his 5 minutes of popularity, the "swinging bachelor" who was a shameless self promoter.
