Jimmy can’t be far behind.

S. ?

by Anonymousreply 1November 19, 2023 7:23 PM

Jimmy will probably follow her soon. They both lived long great lives. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 2November 19, 2023 7:23 PM

Super? Scintillating? Sassy?

by Anonymousreply 3November 19, 2023 7:24 PM

It was supposed to be U.S.

by Anonymousreply 4November 19, 2023 7:26 PM

RIP Mrs Carter.

by Anonymousreply 5November 19, 2023 7:26 PM

I win.

by Anonymousreply 6November 19, 2023 7:26 PM

She's never been photographed nude fingering herself, so she's not a real first lady.

by Anonymousreply 7November 19, 2023 7:26 PM

Awwwww

by Anonymousreply 8November 19, 2023 7:27 PM

Datalounge VERY often announces these bulletins far quicker than the New York Times. I just checked NOTHING at their website about Mrs. Carter.

by Anonymousreply 9November 19, 2023 7:27 PM

I feel sad for him, married 77 years.

by Anonymousreply 10November 19, 2023 7:28 PM

That’s more like it.

by Anonymousreply 11November 19, 2023 7:28 PM

May she Rest in Peace. A wonderful couple who did so much good in the world. Especially their work for Habitat for Humanity.

by Anonymousreply 12November 19, 2023 7:29 PM

RIP.

by Anonymousreply 13November 19, 2023 7:29 PM

Please do not let DJT near the funeral

by Anonymousreply 14November 19, 2023 7:30 PM

I wouldn't worry, r14.

by Anonymousreply 15November 19, 2023 7:32 PM

May she rest in peace.

by Anonymousreply 16November 19, 2023 7:33 PM

Presidents - sitting or former - rarely go to the funerals of former First Ladies, R14. Unless the First Lady is Eleanor Roosevelt.

by Anonymousreply 17November 19, 2023 7:33 PM

Jimmy will be the only president people will be sad about dying.

by Anonymousreply 18November 19, 2023 7:33 PM

Is Jimmy well enough to attend her funeral?

by Anonymousreply 19November 19, 2023 7:35 PM

So young.

by Anonymousreply 20November 19, 2023 7:35 PM

[quote]I feel sad for him, married 77 years.

I will cry like a 12 year old girl if he dies shortly after this to join her in the great beyond 😭

by Anonymousreply 21November 19, 2023 7:35 PM

We’ll get to see the reclusive Amy.

by Anonymousreply 22November 19, 2023 7:36 PM

Rest in peace, Mrs. Carter

by Anonymousreply 23November 19, 2023 7:36 PM

R21, Maybe Jimmy will pull a “Debbie Reynolds”.

by Anonymousreply 24November 19, 2023 7:37 PM

R19: I think he’ll be well enough to go to the funeral. He entered hospice not because he was at death’s door but because he knew Rosalynn was declining and wanted to go with her. RIP Mrs. Carter

by Anonymousreply 25November 19, 2023 7:37 PM

R19, Bush 41 attended Bar’s funeral in a wheelchair.

by Anonymousreply 26November 19, 2023 7:38 PM

Bless her and all the great work she did!

She is in Heaven now!

by Anonymousreply 27November 19, 2023 7:39 PM

A great lady and a Great First Lady who worked relentlessly for, to name a few: the poor; mental (and physical) health); those without homes and millions without hope here and around the world.

Rest In Peace, Mrs. Carter. Your life set a wonderful example for your country. Thank you for your service.

by Anonymousreply 28November 19, 2023 7:39 PM

I’m bringing Bill with me to the funeral because I am not sitting next to Michelle.

by Anonymousreply 29November 19, 2023 7:40 PM

My sympathies, OP. I also had an oops in the headline when I posted the original thread on this topic. Or not. There's no timestamp on this site -at least not that I know of. Rather than mention the Third Reich, I'll just add my condolences to Jimmy and the Carter family. And to America, which has lost a shining example of how to be and what to do in and out of the White House.

by Anonymousreply 30November 19, 2023 7:43 PM

R29, I doubt either of the Clintons will go. The Carters and Clintons got along like oil and water.

by Anonymousreply 31November 19, 2023 7:45 PM

They will attend -out of respect for the office at the very least. It's a very tiny sacrifice, and one that doesn't get asked very often. The real question will be if a Trump will dare to show up.

by Anonymousreply 32November 19, 2023 7:47 PM

Our country has more tears ahead shortly. As many stated upthread, President and Mrs. Carter were rarely from each other's sides in life and in love. He will be joining his beloved soon. God bless them both.

by Anonymousreply 33November 19, 2023 7:49 PM

I bet Melania will go

by Anonymousreply 34November 19, 2023 7:49 PM

I predict that Jimmy will still live on for years without her, R33.

by Anonymousreply 35November 19, 2023 7:50 PM

I predict Jimmy will remarry.

by Anonymousreply 36November 19, 2023 7:51 PM

I actually think all former potus and First Ladies will attend the funeral (except Trump, no one wants his disgusting ass there) along with Joe and Jill of course. Just based on their humantarian work, and the longevity of their lives. It’s not like Barbara or Nancy dying, who didn’t do shit for anyone that was poor and suffering.

by Anonymousreply 37November 19, 2023 7:52 PM

Whatever happened to his HILLBILLY WHITE TRASH brother?

by Anonymousreply 38November 19, 2023 7:52 PM

Jimmy Carter, long now blind, hasn’t been seen in public for some time. I don’t think his health will enable him to attend the funeral.

by Anonymousreply 39November 19, 2023 7:53 PM

R31, Didn’t Carter criticize Clinton during the Lewinsky thing?

by Anonymousreply 40November 19, 2023 7:53 PM

R38, Billy died, young like his non-Jimmy siblings, in the ‘80s. Like their father, all of pancreatic cancer.

by Anonymousreply 41November 19, 2023 7:55 PM

Didn't everybody, R40? It's the past. The Ex-President Club is a very small, elite group. The Clintons will attend.

by Anonymousreply 42November 19, 2023 7:55 PM

She and Jimmy were two really good people. RIP Mrs Cater

by Anonymousreply 43November 19, 2023 7:56 PM

Remember when Rosalynn told Mike Wallace on “60 Minutes” that Ronald Reagan made Americans feel comfortable with their prejudices?

Mike was a bit stunned and gave her an opportunity to walk it back, but she did not.

by Anonymousreply 44November 19, 2023 7:56 PM

R40, the Clintons always blamed Pres. Carter for Bill’s loss in his first gubernatorial re-election campaign.

by Anonymousreply 45November 19, 2023 7:56 PM

Have you noticed that many famous old people die at 96 recently? Queen Elizabeth, Angela Lansbury, Tony Bennett just to name a few. There must be something about this magic number being the age the elderly usually croaks at.

by Anonymousreply 46November 19, 2023 7:58 PM

[quote] I predict Jimmy will remarry.

I find date for him, for veddy good price.

by Anonymousreply 47November 19, 2023 7:58 PM

R34, Melania attended Barbara Bush’s funeral alone.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 48November 19, 2023 7:58 PM

r44, I recall that too

by Anonymousreply 49November 19, 2023 7:59 PM

RIP to a great lady. May she rest in peace.

by Anonymousreply 50November 19, 2023 7:59 PM

I think all the present & former First Ladies - with the exception of Melania - will attend. The only president might be W., so he can be with bestie again.

by Anonymousreply 51November 19, 2023 7:59 PM

R41, Billy’s daughter married Van Jones. Seriously.

by Anonymousreply 53November 19, 2023 8:00 PM

[quote] I recall that too

Recollections may vary.

by Anonymousreply 54November 19, 2023 8:00 PM

Although Melania went to Barbara’s funeral, she was the then-current First Lady.

by Anonymousreply 55November 19, 2023 8:01 PM

And then they divorced, R53.

by Anonymousreply 56November 19, 2023 8:01 PM

Thanks for that pic, R52. In the one I saw at the time, only Rosalynn was (somewhat) visible.

by Anonymousreply 57November 19, 2023 8:03 PM

What a REAL Christian looks like.

by Anonymousreply 58November 19, 2023 8:04 PM

Didn’t Rosalynn refuse to give Nancy Reagan the traditional tour of the White House family quarters and had an underling do it?

by Anonymousreply 59November 19, 2023 8:04 PM

I never heard that story, R59. I don’t think that’s true.

by Anonymousreply 60November 19, 2023 8:06 PM

I’m seeing reporting that it was Guinea worm — any credence to that, DL?

by Anonymousreply 61November 19, 2023 8:06 PM

Oh, nuts.

by Anonymousreply 62November 19, 2023 8:07 PM

When the lamestream press don’t list a cause of death, it’s almost always a vax injury.

by Anonymousreply 63November 19, 2023 8:09 PM

[quote]President and Mrs. Carter were rarely from each other's sides in life and in love.

Except once, in 1976.

But it was only two days later that Mr. President Jimmy Carter announced to the American people that he had secretly lusted in his life.

by Anonymousreply 64November 19, 2023 8:09 PM

R9, the New York Times never announces a death FIRST.

by Anonymousreply 65November 19, 2023 8:12 PM

She is one of the few, if only, First Lady to pull off the same hairstyle for 50 plus years and still look good. For that alone she rises to the top!

by Anonymousreply 66November 19, 2023 8:16 PM

R66- I've had the same hairshtyle since 1972!

by Anonymousreply 67November 19, 2023 8:21 PM

The pic is R52 is heartbreaking. Rosalynn looked ok, but Jimmy didn't.

by Anonymousreply 68November 19, 2023 8:21 PM

R67, you missed “and still looks good”.

by Anonymousreply 69November 19, 2023 8:24 PM

[quote] She is one of the few, if only, First Lady to pull off the same hairstyle for 50 plus years and still look good.

Fuck you, R66!

by Anonymousreply 70November 19, 2023 8:26 PM

When I first saw this thread, I feared S. Epatha Merkerson had died.

by Anonymousreply 71November 19, 2023 8:26 PM

A wonderful being. A true humanitarian, like her husband.

A live well lived.

by Anonymousreply 72November 19, 2023 8:27 PM

I had an aunt and uncle who were together for 60+ years--when my aunt died, her husband joined her a few days later. I think this'll be a similar situation.

RIP Rosalynn, you were a wonderful first lady. And Jimmy should've had a second term, except he was fucked over by Reagan with the Iran hostages situation. Truly good people--what anyone labeling themselves a Christian should aspire to.

by Anonymousreply 73November 19, 2023 8:29 PM

R31 I will guarantee you the Clintons will be there. You're right, they were oil and water for a long time, but in the past 20 years those feelings had faded, and Bill and Hil were fond of them, admired them, but no they were never friends. I suspect Jimmy won't be far behind. I'm reminded of an old bible verse,"I go to prepare place for you..." RIP, Rosalynn. It's about time media acknowledged her role. I remember the controversy the media fed when Rosalynn attended cabinet meetings, and when she asked for and got an office and a staff in the East Wing. That had not been done before.

by Anonymousreply 74November 19, 2023 8:32 PM

R41, that just makes me even more convinced that scientists have developed life-enhancing drugs, but have only allowed an exclusive group (including former presidents and first ladies) access to them.

by Anonymousreply 75November 19, 2023 8:33 PM

R61 you crack me up.

What a wonderful thing to spend 77 years with the love of your life doing good deeds together. Rest in power dear Mrs. Carter.

She and Jimmy both deserve state funerals in the National Cathedral. But knowing their humble attitudes I doubt Jimmy would want that.

by Anonymousreply 83November 19, 2023 8:44 PM

All living First Ladies will attend the funeral, which will likely be in Georgia, not in DC. That includes Hillary Clinton. Representatives of the families of past Presidents will also be invited, such as members of the Ford, Johnson, and Kennedy families.

And Van Jones was not married to President Carter's daughter Amy, but to Jana Carter, no relation.

by Anonymousreply 84November 19, 2023 8:47 PM

R84 That cunt Melania had better not show up.

by Anonymousreply 85November 19, 2023 8:49 PM

Apologies if anyone else has already posted President Carter’s statement about the loss of Mrs Carter, but it bears repeating:

“Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”

by Anonymousreply 86November 19, 2023 8:49 PM

If you're ever in Atlanta, go to Carter's presidential library. It's amazing what he got done. And Rosalyn knew how to dress. Even in the hideous 70's.

by Anonymousreply 87November 19, 2023 8:49 PM

I remember Joan Rivers was such a bitch to the Carters, calling them hillbillies with RC shouting "Come and Git It"

by Anonymousreply 88November 19, 2023 8:49 PM

Should add to r84, representatives of the Reagan and Bush families will also be invited to the funeral.

It seems odd that Bill and Hillary Clinton are now the oldest surviving President and First Lady combo.

by Anonymousreply 89November 19, 2023 8:49 PM

I don't think the relationship between the clintons and the carters could have been too Frosty these last few years given they attended the Carter's 75th wedding anniversary.

by Anonymousreply 92November 19, 2023 8:57 PM

[quote] And Van Jones was not married to President Carter's daughter Amy, but to Jana Carter, no relation.

Jana Carter WAS Billy's daughter.

by Anonymousreply 93November 19, 2023 8:57 PM

R84, Amy Carter and Jana Carter are first cousins, you moron.

by Anonymousreply 94November 19, 2023 8:58 PM

R89, See R53.

by Anonymousreply 95November 19, 2023 9:00 PM

Thanks, R91! Throughout the years, I would object to young Ron to my friends (who liked his liberal politics) because I vaguely remembered - but couldn't place - some highly offensive comment about Jimmy Carter. With your help, I now have what he said.

by Anonymousreply 96November 19, 2023 9:01 PM

R84, See R53.

by Anonymousreply 101November 19, 2023 9:10 PM

by Anonymousreply 102November 19, 2023 9:11 PM

by Anonymousreply 103November 19, 2023 9:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 104November 19, 2023 9:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 109November 19, 2023 9:27 PM

R106, Joan Rivers adored Donald Trump, as did her pals Cindy Adams and Barbara Walters.

by Anonymousreply 110November 19, 2023 9:29 PM

I look forward to the klassiest FLOTUS ever, Melania, and her fuck me stilettos and Nazi stormtrooper outfit at the funeral.

by Anonymousreply 114November 19, 2023 10:05 PM

Sadly, this is likely to cast a pall over Thanksgiving. I hope they can think of it as she's sharing a turkey leg with Jesus this year.

by Anonymousreply 115November 19, 2023 10:07 PM

R67, make that 1967.

by Anonymousreply 116November 19, 2023 10:08 PM

Rosalynn wanted me to read the eulogy.

by Anonymousreply 117November 19, 2023 10:09 PM

I fondly remember an encounter with the former First Lady when Mrs. Carter climbed through my kitchen window with a quart of chili. She almost stepped on my shelter cat Miss Sissy Boodles before scurrying away, chased by two Secret Service Agents.

by Anonymousreply 118November 19, 2023 10:10 PM

Jimmy and Rosalynn were huge fans of Royal Caribbean Cruises (imagine the Secret Service letting even a former First Couple on a cruise ship these days), and Rosalynn even christened one of their ships. Back in my travel agent days when I was more plugged into cruise industry message boards, I read more than one story from women who went to exercises classes onboard during the 80s and would be working out alongside her.

I can maybe see Michelle Obama and Jill Biden doing something like that, amongst the regular folks, but Hillary, Laura Bush or the Varist Lady? Absolutely not.

by Anonymousreply 119November 19, 2023 11:18 PM

If you need a smile, here's the story of Rosalynn as godmother to Sovereign of the Seas. Some nice pictures of her as well.

by Anonymousreply 120November 19, 2023 11:26 PM

FYI: Jana Carter was the daughter of Jimmy Carter's crazy brother Billy Carter. So she was Jimmy's niece. She divorced Van Jones almost ten years ago. OK? Are we clear? are we CLEAR?

by Anonymousreply 121November 19, 2023 11:27 PM

I'm betting they will coordinate witI'm also guessing they will have her lying in state at the Carter Center, then take her back to plains for the actual funeral.

by Anonymousreply 122November 19, 2023 11:29 PM

Has our favorite president commented, yet? His was Pres. Carter's last presidential inauguration.

by Anonymousreply 123November 19, 2023 11:32 PM

Hunny Jimmy and Rosalynn probably have everything all planned out for their funeral including who will speak and what kind of hymns. When Jimmy has his homegoing, he will lie in state at the Carter Center for two or three days, then go to Washington for a couple of days, then back to Plains for the actual funeral service and burial.

by Anonymousreply 124November 19, 2023 11:32 PM

I think I mentioned this in a prior thread, but since its founding, Brooks Brothers made bespoke suits for every president except two.

One was Ronald Reagan, who preferred the work of his fancy Hollywood tailors.

The other was Jimmy Carter, forever a man of the people, who bought off the rack.

by Anonymousreply 125November 19, 2023 11:35 PM

I imagine Ron Reagan Jr's. attitude has changed significantly in the years since his father was POTUS. He has admitted many times that he was ashamed of his father for the things he did.

by Anonymousreply 126November 19, 2023 11:37 PM

If that filthy Eastern European whore Melania is invited and actually attends either of the Carter's funerals I will be incensed. I would think fat fuck Donald would tell her to keep her skank ass at home. If he even knows where she is, that is.

by Anonymousreply 127November 19, 2023 11:41 PM

[quote] Hunny Jimmy and Rosalynn probably have everything all planned out for their funeral including who will speak

The problem with their longstanding plans that is living by living to such ripe ages their preferred speakers may not be alive or well enough to speak.

[quote]What about LBJ? Or did you mean while in office? What about FDR?

In the 60 years since Kennedy was killed, only one Democratic president has died, LBJ. FDR died before Kennedy was in office.

by Anonymousreply 133November 19, 2023 11:53 PM

I need to correct myself. Two democratic presidents, Truman (12/72) & LBJ (1/73), not one, have died. But it's something that none have died in closing in on 51 years.

by Anonymousreply 134November 19, 2023 11:58 PM

You learn very quickly that there is no handbook or rules to being First Lady. Technically, it’s not even an official position. And while there are spoken and unspoken expectations that provide some structure, the role is largely shaped by the passions and aspirations of the person holding it.

First Lady Rosalynn Carter understood that well.

Guided by her abiding faith and her commitment to service, Mrs. Carter used her platform in profoundly meaningful ways. Her groundbreaking work to combat the stigma faced by those struggling with their mental health brought light to so many suffering in silence. She advocated for better care for the elderly. She advanced women’s rights. And she remained a champion for those causes — and many others like building affordable housing for those in need and caring for our nation’s caregivers — in the more than four decades that followed.

When our family was in the White House, every so often, Rosalynn would join me for lunch, offering a few words of advice and always — always — a helping hand. She reminded me to make the role of First Lady my own, just like she did. I’ll always remain grateful for her support and her generosity.

Today, Barack and I join the world in celebrating the remarkable legacy of a First Lady, philanthropist, and advocate who dedicated her life to lifting up others. Her life is a reminder that no matter who we are, our legacies are best measured not in awards or accolades, but in the lives we touch. We send our thoughts and prayers to Jimmy and the entire Carter family during this difficult time.

Regarding what r59 wrote— Rosalynn did the White House tour with Nancy in 1980, but Nancy, true to form, acted like a cunt. From the Kitty Kelley book:

“The traditional tour of the White House for the future First Lady, conducted on November 20, 1980, had been especially uncomfortable for Rosalynn Carter, who was still smarting from her husband’s humiliating defeat.

“It was awkward, totally awkward,” recalled Mary Finch Hoyt, Mrs. Carter’s press secretary. “I felt so protective of Rosalynn at that point, having somebody just come into your house and open up your closets, which is exactly what happened. … After all, Mrs. Carter was still First Lady, and the White House was still her home.”

Another Carter aide was shocked to hear Mrs. Reagan say, “Where are the closets? Betty Ford says you’ve got some great closets around here. That’s what I’d like to see first. The closets.”

“Mrs. Carter was cordial,” continued Mary Hoyt, “but it was difficult for her, especially when she tried to describe the history of some of the rooms and all Nancy Reagan wanted to know about was the closet space. Mrs. Carter was quite shocked by that

. Later she said, ‘All she cared about was the closets. That’s all she cared about. Closets. Closets. Closets.’ I think that was the point where Rosalynn turned the tour over to the chief “usher, Rex Scouten, who finished escorting Mrs. Reagan through the state rooms.

Then Mrs. Reagan insisted on coming back two more times with her decorator, Ted Graber, to go over the floor plans and check out the closets again. They came once while the Carters were at Camp David.”

In briefing the press later, (press secretary ) Robin Orr said Mrs. Reagan had been shown everything “except for two of the kids’ rooms, which Mrs. Carter said weren’t tidy enough to be seen.”

Mamie Eisenhower was a cunt to Jackie on their tour. Jackie was recuperating from JFK Jr’s birth and was using a wheelchair at the time if she had to walk long distances. Jackie’s people asked for a wheelchair to be available in case it was needed. When Mamie heard, she refused to allow this and made Jackie walk the length of the White House with her.

by Anonymousreply 173November 20, 2023 3:01 PM

He cried at her funeral, thus proving that he really did have a heart in there somewhere.

by Anonymousreply 193November 20, 2023 4:01 PM

You know, context is everything. When Eleanor was First Lady running all over the place and making speeches,, writing a newspaper column, it was completely unheard of, especially for a woman of her class. And she topped it off by being the first chairman of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. I think the most consequential First Ladies were Abigail Adams, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jacqueline Kennedy and Hillary Clinton. Rosalynn made significant contributions too.

by Anonymousreply 194November 20, 2023 4:07 PM

Clinton

Obama

by Anonymousreply 206November 20, 2023 5:19 PM

Another interesting fact is that Trump, W. & Clinton, in that order, were born in three successive months of 1946. And although the 1950s were the peak of the Baby Boom, it’s looking very likely that the decade will not produce a president. Like the 1930s & 1810s. The only decades not to produce a president following Washington’s 1730s representation.

by Anonymousreply 221November 20, 2023 7:36 PM

I think we need to expand our search. The media either overlooks Harris or makes fun of her. Determined to promote the impression "no one likes her" or that she is incompetent. I am not going to take the bait. And remember how they trashed Amy? Kamala is really is doing a very good job. I follow her on instagram and twitter and her husband too. I also follow Hillary, and the Bidens. I follow the Obamas. I follow Pete and Amy. If all you do is depend on the so called mainstream media you will not get anything resembling a decent perspective. The media is all about hype, promoting fear and division and controversies. Klobuchar is great, but we need her in the Senate and I hope to God Schumer steps aside in 2025 so she can assume a leadership role. Kamala and Elizabeth Warren together would make a great ticket. Right now we have to make sure Sherrod Brown gets re elected in Ohio. Ruben Gallegos in Arizona (He's primarying Sinema.) And Who ever replaces Feinstein. There's a couple more. Manchin. We have to keep that seat Democratic.

by Anonymousreply 222November 20, 2023 7:37 PM

On that topic, Rosalynn Carter gave a speech at Betty's memorial (not her funeral) which used to be online in its entirety and it was quite beautiful. As many know in their post-Presidential years the Fords and the Carters developed a deep friendship. In her lovely, soft speaking voice Rosalynn ended her remarks about Betty Ford by simply saying, "It was my privilege to know her" and you wanted to cry, it was so simple and honest.

“Deborah had done nursing training before her marriage so she read up all the books she could find, searching for information about Caesarean birth. "It seems to be there is a whole area that doctors just don't know about. That's why they try to make me afraid." One encouraging fact was that Ethel Kennedy had all of her 11 children by Caesarean.

By the time her seventh baby was born, Laser treatment was being used during the operation which speeded up the healing of her wound. "I bounced back and came home on the third day," she said.“

You know, with all these former Trump aides coming forward talking about how dangerous he is and he shouldn't be POTUS, they always cite some incidents or situation in the WH where they alone prevented some major catastrophe. Now I don't doubt them, and I'll safely bet Trump's WH was even worse than described, but it made me think about these previous PResidents and how they had serious flaws that we never heard about.

Mrs. Carter's funeral(s) will begin on Monday the 27th. On Monday she'll lay in repose at Ga. Southwestern Univ. in Americus, Ga.. Then on Tuesday she will be taken to the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta to lay in repose there with a funeral service held at Glenn Memorial Church on the campus of Emory University/Atlanta. She will then be returned to Plains for a 2nd funeral on Wednesday at their local church, with burial on the Carter family home grounds.

I wonder if Jimmy will be able to attend the Service? I'm going to say yes, he will be at their local Church in Plains. But I don't think he will make the rest of the journey. Although he might just go to the Carter Center briefly. I also wonder if Andrew Young will show up He is in his 90's now and in a wheel chair. May not be up to it, but he is certainly a very close friend. Jimmy appointed him Ambassador to the U.N. and he was a Congressman from Georgia before he was Mayor.

by Anonymousreply 263November 21, 2023 5:30 PM

Jimmy stopped his cancer treatments, probably in an effort to let Rosalynn go first. That kind of love story is rare but knowing it happens gives this crusty old curmudgeon hope.

by Anonymousreply 264November 21, 2023 8:34 PM

Who will deliver the eulogy at the service at Emory?

by Anonymousreply 265November 21, 2023 8:40 PM

She and Jimmy will be buried under a willow tree on the family home property. The Carter's home sits on property that is managed by the federal government and will always be.

by Anonymousreply 270November 22, 2023 6:39 AM

This neighbor friend from Plains says she cooked for them several times a month for years, and the other day Jimmy had some spaghetti after Rosalynn passed on. She cooked a big batch for the family and she'd be cooking Jimmy some bacon and eggs today. So it seems like, to me, Jimmy is able to eat solid foods etc. and his hospice decision is more one about not wanting to go to the hospital and get treated for anything, instead just stay home and be comfortable. Palliative care.

by Anonymousreply 271November 22, 2023 11:51 AM

I wonder if Laura Bush, Hillary, and Michelle will be there. I expect Jill Biden to attend.

by Anonymousreply 272November 22, 2023 12:26 PM

^Yes, Yes, Yes and Yes.

by Anonymousreply 273November 22, 2023 2:02 PM

R272:

Laura Bush would consider it bad manners to not attend. She will avoid the spotlight and write the family a private handwritten note of condolences.

Hillary always goes because Rosalynn was a Democrat. Hillary likes to be seen in public, but won't make any public comments.

Michelle and Barack will go and probably draw a lot of attention. They can't help it. They will probably make public comments too.

by Anonymousreply 274November 22, 2023 2:07 PM

I don't think Barack will come. Only Michelle. First ladies for the former First Ladies. It's only going to be a short time until they all have to gather for Jimmy. Al Gore was close to Jimmy. I have no idea whether there will be anyone from the Gore family. The cool people I was familiar with from his campaign and his administration are all dead. Hamilton Jordan, Jody Powell, Gerald Rafshoon.

I'm in Atlanta and thinking about going to the Carter Center on Tuesday. I honestly worry about covid tho after Thanksgiving get togethers. And I'll say it again. Rosalynn had amazing style. How in the hell did she manage to look timeless in the 70s? When you do see her in a really 70's outfit, it's a flattering look of a cool 70's trend.

Theodore White, the chronicler of US presidential campaigns for decades through the 1980 election, wrote that there were only four candidates he covered he was sure were faithful to their wives. I can’t remember the fourth one, but the other three - I believe - were Harry Truman, George Romney & Jimmy Carter.

by Anonymousreply 285November 24, 2023 7:29 PM

I was mistaken. There were not four faithful men, only the three I named:

"The acceptance of casual partners was a part of politicians’ lives, White wrote in his memoir. Among the scores of politicians he knew, he said he was reasonably certain that only three — Harry Truman, George Romney and Jimmy Carter — 'had denied themselves the pleasures' of extramarital liaisons."

Btw ^^^: here is the highly respected Columbia Journalism Review out with a new report that says:

[quote] Political coverage at even the largest and most consequential newspapers consists almost exclusively of horse race reporting and campaign gossip. Actual issue and policy examinations were nearly nonexistent.”

[...]

[quote] We found that the Times and the Post shared significant overlap in their domestic politics coverage, offering little insight into policy. Both emphasized the horse race and campaign palace intrigue, stories that functioned more to entertain readers than to educate them on essential differences between political parties. The main point of contrast we found between the two papers was that, while the Post delved more into topics Democrats generally want to discuss—affirmative action, police reform, LGBTQ rights—the Times tended to focus on subjects important to Republicans—China, immigration, and crime.

The pic of JFK with Truman in R182’s link reminds of the great quote from Truman in 1960 about candidate JFK. The famously anti-Joe Kennedy made it clear that it wasn’t JFK’s Catholicism that troubled him. “It’s the pop, not the Pope,” Truman emphasized.

by Anonymousreply 316November 27, 2023 11:25 PM

The subject of Mrs. Carter’s death came up in a conversation I had with a woman who works for a family member. One thing led to another with her expressing her understanding that it was a requirement that a president be married. I said no, the Constitution only requires that you be at least 35 & a naturalized US citizen.

by Anonymousreply 317November 28, 2023 2:37 AM

R316. The pont is that although those other positions are arguably greater accomplishments, you don’t get the kind of prominence from them that you get from being First Lady. In the long run, that is primarily what she will be remembered fur and why she received an automatic invitation to the ceremony.

by Anonymousreply 318November 28, 2023 3:23 AM

R317 I thought you also had to be born in the United States, not a naturalized citizen. A naturalized citizen is one who was not born here but acquires citizenship.

by Anonymousreply 319November 28, 2023 5:02 AM

Not so, R319. Both John McCain & George Romney were born outside the US to American parents.

R320 et Al, from Wikipedia:

The U.S. Constitution uses but does not define the phrase "natural born Citizen" and various opinions have been offered over time regarding its exact meaning. The consensus of early 21st-century constitutional and legal scholars, together with relevant case law, is that natural-born citizens include, subject to exceptions, those born in the United States. As to those born elsewhere who meet the legal requirements for birthright citizenship, the consensus emerging as of 2016 was that they also are natural-born citizens.[2][3][4]

It definitely is confusing, but I believe McCain and Romney were born in US territories, so they are considered natural-born citizens.

by Anonymousreply 323November 28, 2023 12:21 PM

R323, Romney was born in Mexico to missionary Mormon Americans. McCain was born to an American military couple stationed outside the then-48 United States. But wherever he was born, he or someone similarly situated would be eligible to be president.

by Anonymousreply 324November 28, 2023 1:12 PM

I remember when this came up about Governor Jennifer Granholm, and even earlier about Kissinger. Granholm was a favorite of Bidens when he was VP. He appointed her our Energy Secretary. But when she was governor of Michigan she was an up and coming Democratic star, and speculation rose asto her eligibility to run for POTUS. She was born in Canada to Canadian parents. She was Canadian until she became an American citizen. Same with Kissinger, back in the 70's, when he had his 5 minutes of popularity, the "swinging bachelor" who was a shameless self promoter.

by Anonymousreply 325November 28, 2023 2:51 PM

Yes, Granholm, along with Schwarzenegger, would not be eligible.
