What do we think of Dolly Parton’s new rock album “Rockstar”?

It’s like Ethel Merman’s disco album.

I actually quite like her version of Purple Rain

by Anonymousreply 1November 18, 2023 5:32 AM

I can’t be annoyed with her. I saw her live and she was amazing. She was also very tiny! She has written some very meaningful songs, she is phenomenal

by Anonymousreply 2November 18, 2023 5:35 AM

I will always love her.

by Anonymousreply 3November 18, 2023 5:36 AM

I love it. She can do no wrong. Except rap. Please don’t do rap, Dolly.

by Anonymousreply 4November 18, 2023 5:51 AM

Me too, R3.

by Anonymousreply 5November 18, 2023 7:02 AM

It's actually not bad. Definitely not amazing but much better than you'd expect. I'm surprisingly impressed.

by Anonymousreply 6November 18, 2023 7:07 AM

I've been listening to this while at work today. Every Breath You Take isn't so great but I have never liked that song. I really dig Magic Man with Ann Wilson and Night Moves with Chris Stapleton.

by Anonymousreply 7November 21, 2023 5:59 PM

It's enjoyable actually.

Dolly deserves its success.

by Anonymousreply 8November 21, 2023 6:02 PM

I loved it.

by Anonymousreply 9November 21, 2023 6:06 PM

Heart Of Glass and Heartbreaker are beyond amazing! Debbie and Pat sound great!

by Anonymousreply 10November 22, 2023 6:55 AM

I've been enjoying itm some of the intros are a bit cheesy but fun. I really wished she would've finally covered Lying Eyes. She's said it's one of her favorite songs and I've long wanted a version from her.

by Anonymousreply 11November 22, 2023 6:59 AM

I haven't heard the album, but I liked her singing Wrecking Ball with Miley a few months back.

by Anonymousreply 12November 22, 2023 7:03 AM

That's on this album, and it's a really good version of the song.

by Anonymousreply 13November 22, 2023 7:18 AM

She should play the Mae West part if they ever remake Myra Breckenridge.

I love it.

by Anonymousreply 15November 22, 2023 2:14 PM

R14 She had planned to at one point play mar West in a movie and it was even announced. She did write at least one song for a musical about west that was later cut for being too sad.

by Anonymousreply 16November 22, 2023 2:33 PM

Often camptastic. Mostly awful. Dolly-speak is like Liza-speak now - but Dolly comes to her lisp from all that plastic.

by Anonymousreply 17November 22, 2023 2:36 PM

[Quote] She can do no wrong

I detest this type of fan no matter who the artist.

by Anonymousreply 18November 22, 2023 2:41 PM

Dolly is an amazing human being, and if more people were like Dolly, the world would be a better place. She's accepting, loving, generous, caring, empathetic, and just an all around good person ON TOP OF being extremely talented.

by Anonymousreply 19November 22, 2023 3:43 PM

I love Dolly. Beautiful lady. But that album is horrible. I really wanted to like it.

by Anonymousreply 20November 29, 2023 3:24 AM

It's ... okay. Like the poster above wrote, "Purple Rain" is far and away the best song on the album because she sings it with tremendous emotion and brings in a gospel choir.

Much of the rest of it can be summed up as "Dolly does karaoke with her famous friends," which is not all bad. But I question why she chose some of the songs she did.

by Anonymousreply 21November 29, 2023 3:32 AM

Why can’t she just settle into retirement with Carl?

I never understand how the going-going-going is overwhelming. Surely they must have enough to live on comfortably.

by Anonymousreply 22November 29, 2023 4:17 AM

I think Dolly is one of those people who will work until they drop.

by Anonymousreply 23November 29, 2023 4:21 AM

The cover of Stairway to Heaven is uninspired, and the best part about it is the flute.

Fortunately, years ago, she did a bluegrass cover of it that is amazing, and sends the new version of it crying home to its mama.

I agree R21. She could have at least had different arrangements of the songs. Some songs are ok, but the arrangements sound just like the originals. I love covers on TikTok when people do them in a unique way. I doubt Dolly has heard of TikTok since she doesn't even have a cell phone. She communicates through a fax machine.

by Anonymousreply 25November 29, 2023 4:42 AM

The only parts of her songs I didn't like were when she got down to a whisper... it did not sound good.

by Anonymousreply 26November 29, 2023 6:09 AM

Ever since the Oprah/Hermès incident, I can’t help but listen to Stairway to Heaven and not think that the lyrics

“When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed

With a word she can get what she came for”

are about Oprah. (I know the song predates Oprah, it’s just what I think about when I hear it now).

I even picture Oprah climbing the stairway to heaven she just bought.

by Anonymousreply 27November 29, 2023 7:01 AM

[quote]Why can’t she just settle into retirement with Carl?

I think it’s just her nature. She’s recorded over 50 albums and has over 300 compilation albums and albums she’s contributed to. She’s written over 3,000 songs. She must love making music and preforming and she’s never going to quit. It’s definitely not about the money at this point. It’s because doing it makes her happy.

by Anonymousreply 28November 29, 2023 7:06 AM

This bitch again…..

by Anonymousreply 29November 29, 2023 7:14 AM

I wonder if Miley will inherit all of Dolly’s goodwill and fandom over time. She was put in a tough position being a tv actress at such a young age, but she has the same kindness and generosity that Dolly does. Dolly is her godmother and loves her dearly. Miley’s had a few growing pains, but if Dolly had grown up in the age of social media, crazed paparazzi, and had started as young as Miley, she probably would have too and we were spared all that.

But Miley’s got the musical bona fides and has done some good stuff with her time and money. It’ll be interesting to see if she’s as popular at 77 as Dolly is.

(don’t laugh. I know it sounds ridiculous, but Miley seems like a good person and she turned out WAY better than I thought she would. I had her pegged for a Lindsay Lohan life, so she’s already exceeded my expectations for her!)

by Anonymousreply 31November 29, 2023 7:48 AM

Just listened to about half the album. I’ve had sufficient.

by Anonymousreply 32November 29, 2023 7:49 AM

R30 Yeah it does sound ridiculous. Gauche. Ew. Fuck.

by Anonymousreply 33November 29, 2023 8:20 AM

Miley is snarky and spiteful. She can sing but has no soul in her voice. Nope.

by Anonymousreply 34November 29, 2023 8:32 AM

Dolly’s voice isn’t up to it. It’s a depressing album that should have been made a decade ago.

by Anonymousreply 35November 29, 2023 8:34 AM

I like As Long As I Can See The Light.

by Anonymousreply 36November 29, 2023 8:37 AM

I love her duet with Stevie Nicks. They had great banter and neither take it seriously, just had fun.

by Anonymousreply 37November 29, 2023 8:38 AM

R22, many people aren’t into being lazy and sitting on their fat asses all day.
