The white chart singers pretty much post Al Jolson to pre Johnny Ray weren’t bland, they simply saw their place as a setting in a piece of jewelry, highlighting the SONG. I find Cole’s vocals clear and poignant.

One of the greats- if you really know his material- much more to it than crooning- jazz pianist and singer too- but his hits were slow tempo ballads. My favorite is Lush Life. Kills me every time I hear it.
