Actors in their 40’s who still aren’t convincing as mature adults on-screen

Natalie Portman

Ryan Gosling

Jake Gyllenhaal

Eddie Redmayne

Chris Evans

Kate Hudson

Ashton Kutcher

Is it a curse or blessing to their careers that they appear to stuck in time? There hasn’t been much evolution in the type of roles they play. For reference, when Terms of Endearment filmed, both Shirley MacLaine and Jack Nicholson were in their 40’s. Could you imagine anyone above taking on mature roles like that? Caroll O’Connor became Archie Bunker at age 47.

Ryan Goaling

by Anonymousreply 1November 16, 2023 8:55 PM

Andrew Garfield all day.

by Anonymousreply 2November 16, 2023 8:58 PM

Those darn whippersnappers!

by Anonymousreply 3November 16, 2023 8:59 PM

I'm under 40!!

by Anonymousreply 4November 16, 2023 9:01 PM

DiCaprio. I still see a little boy.

by Anonymousreply 5November 16, 2023 9:23 PM

R5 For the win. Thread closed.

by Anonymousreply 6November 16, 2023 9:54 PM

Mila Kunis too

by Anonymousreply 7November 17, 2023 5:39 AM

Even their voices sound too young. No gravitas!

by Anonymousreply 8November 17, 2023 5:51 AM

Today's forty-year olds are a lot more youthful in appearance and behavior. Shirley Maclaine and Jack Nicholson look like they were in their fifties/pushing sixty in Terms of Endearment. I had to look them up to see if they were in their forties then. I'm in my thirties and constantly get told I look younger.

by Anonymousreply 9November 17, 2023 6:09 AM

As a society, we embrace youth more today than ever before. That’s reflected with how these people style themselves and act. It’s sad and stale.

by Anonymousreply 10November 17, 2023 2:02 PM

OP Jake Gylleenhaal does not belong to this list as well as many others but they aren’t great actors so I don’t care.

by Anonymousreply 11November 17, 2023 2:05 PM

50’s are the new 40’s. Just ask tubby Matt Damon.

by Anonymousreply 12November 17, 2023 2:34 PM

DiCaprio looks like a 20something Russian FAS baby.

by Anonymousreply 13November 17, 2023 2:36 PM

I'm writing from the future: Ariana Grande in Wicked will feel like a malnourished 10 year old playing dress up.

by Anonymousreply 14November 17, 2023 2:40 PM

The youth fetish is disturbing to me. The Golden Girls were women in their mid-late 50s and now our 50 something celebrity women look like botox Kidman.

by Anonymousreply 15November 17, 2023 2:41 PM

DiCaprio is real life looks and acts like a privileged fat adolescent boy, but he’s become convincing on-screen as a middle aged man. Watch Don’t Look Up.

by Anonymousreply 16November 17, 2023 2:41 PM

r14 Oops... I just saw the age specification. She's not in her 40's, but she will never be a convincing adult as she appears to be shrinking.

by Anonymousreply 17November 17, 2023 2:41 PM

DiCaprio is not a good actor but I will say he looks and seems like his age. Same with Kate Winslet, who is a good actress and has allowed herself to not get anything more than tasteful work done. In general, the Brits have less of an issue with this. As do the French.

by Anonymousreply 18November 17, 2023 2:43 PM

r9 I was SHOCKED when I realized Ed Asner was only 41 when MTM premiered. As a kid, he seemed AT LEAST 55-60.

by Anonymousreply 19November 17, 2023 2:45 PM

Elisabeth Moss

by Anonymousreply 20November 17, 2023 2:46 PM

Michael Douglas and Glenn Close were in their early 40’s when Fatal Attraction came out.

by Anonymousreply 21November 17, 2023 2:49 PM

That’s your opinion OP. Not much else.

by Anonymousreply 22November 17, 2023 3:46 PM

Botox, fillers and more affordable plastic surgery have really changed the perception of aging. Standards for dressing oneself have also changed. You look at photos of teenagers from the 1960s or even 1970s, and they all look like they're pushing 50.

by Anonymousreply 23November 17, 2023 4:30 PM

Taryn Manning

by Anonymousreply 24November 17, 2023 4:46 PM

Natalie Portman

by Anonymousreply 25November 17, 2023 4:52 PM

Dicaprio looks like he's in his sixties, fat and wore out.

by Anonymousreply 26November 17, 2023 4:54 PM

Elijah Wood will always look like he’s trapped at puberty.

by Anonymousreply 27November 17, 2023 5:19 PM

It killed Topher Grace’s career. At age 45, he’s only convincing as an immature young adult.

Neil Patrick Harris is another one, even with the deep wrinkles across his face.

by Anonymousreply 28November 17, 2023 5:29 PM

Justin Timberlake- if you consider him an actor of any sort

by Anonymousreply 29November 17, 2023 5:29 PM

[quote]Elijah Wood will always look like he’s trapped at puberty.

I've always wanted Elijah Wood and Daniel Radcliffe to do a movie together.

by Anonymousreply 30November 17, 2023 5:29 PM

R29, he displays his middle age when he performs now.

Apparently, the extra 30 pounds he's carrying inhibits dance movement.

I guess something similar to the old adage about each extra pound is an inch of height in tumbling runs applies to old white men dancing.

by Anonymousreply 32November 17, 2023 8:40 PM

Alexis Bledel

by Anonymousreply 33November 17, 2023 8:55 PM

BJ Novak will always looks like that smug kid from The Office.

by Anonymousreply 34November 17, 2023 9:40 PM

ScarJo pulled it off in Asteroid City.

by Anonymousreply 35November 17, 2023 9:59 PM

If they fail in trite forties, they’re done. Chris Evans needs to ask Armie Hammer for some timeshare job applications.

by Anonymousreply 36November 18, 2023 7:17 PM

Jake shouldnt be on this list. Have you not seen The Covenant, Ambulance, Enemy, End of Watch, SouthPaw, Nightcrawler, Prisoners? All convincing adults.

by Anonymousreply 37November 21, 2023 11:09 AM

Timothee, who can’t act.

by Anonymousreply 38November 21, 2023 11:36 AM

R37, not a mature adult. He’s old enough to have teenage kids. He still acts like one.

by Anonymousreply 39November 21, 2023 12:57 PM

R38, Ms. Chalamet would slap you hard for placing him with this group of elders!

by Anonymousreply 40November 21, 2023 1:11 PM

Zoe Kazan, but she’s also an overgrown nepo baby devoid of any acting talent.

by Anonymousreply 41November 21, 2023 1:39 PM

R39 He convincingly acts like a mature adult in those movies. What he does offscreen I could care less about.

by Anonymousreply 42November 21, 2023 2:01 PM

Natalie Portman felt was a convincing adult in May December, but maybe that was in contrast to woman-child Julianne Moore.

by Anonymousreply 43November 21, 2023 2:11 PM

Ryan Gosling is Kenough and may earn another Oscar nod.

by Anonymousreply 44November 21, 2023 2:17 PM

R5- Him more than ANYONE else

He never became a man. Today he's just an OLD BOY.

by Anonymousreply 45November 21, 2023 2:21 PM

What about actors in their 50’’’’’’s?

by Anonymousreply 46November 21, 2023 2:34 PM

No one has mentioned the former star, horse trainer, and eternally boyish Matthew Broderick?

by Anonymousreply 47November 21, 2023 2:41 PM

Macauley Culkin is 43 years old.

He will always be 21 to me.

by Anonymousreply 48November 21, 2023 2:43 PM

[quote] He will always be 21 to me.

Too old.

by Anonymousreply 49November 21, 2023 3:25 PM

R48 wins. Thread closed.

by Anonymousreply 50November 21, 2023 3:26 PM

R38- He'll always be 11 years old to me.

by Anonymousreply 51November 21, 2023 9:01 PM

R47, he now makes elderly Nathan Lane somehow look young and svelte.
