Female friend furious about her awful veneers

She sent me this picture. I don't think they look that bad, but I'm not a good judge. She says they're too big and make her look old and masculine. She's in her 20s.

Would you be happy with this result?

They look clunky and fake, like the teeth on old fashioned doll babies. How much did these things set her back?

by Anonymousreply 1November 16, 2023 12:10 AM

I would guess that's a closeup of Laura Ingrahm's bizarre, never closed mouth.

by Anonymousreply 2November 16, 2023 12:13 AM

They probably look better than they did. It’s a horrible ordeal so she’s unlikely to redo them. And it’s not like she can just have them taken off.

by Anonymousreply 3November 16, 2023 12:14 AM

Call her Chompers the next time you see her

by Anonymousreply 4November 16, 2023 12:15 AM

What a great friend you are, EST!

by Anonymousreply 5November 16, 2023 12:16 AM

Get her a pair of these. They'll take attention away from her mouth!

I'm not sure there is such a thing as "masculine teeth."

That said, they look better than mine.

by Anonymousreply 10November 16, 2023 12:36 AM

I think the issue is that one front tooth looks much wider than the other. Also, the lateral incisors are longer than the front teeth which looks weird.

by Anonymousreply 11November 16, 2023 12:40 AM

I rode through the desert on a horse with no name….

by Anonymousreply 12November 16, 2023 12:41 AM

They're really pretty ugly. Did she go to someone reputable?

by Anonymousreply 13November 16, 2023 12:45 AM

They look very very thick.

by Anonymousreply 14November 16, 2023 12:55 AM

She could eat a corncob through a picket fence at this point

by Anonymousreply 15November 16, 2023 12:58 AM

Why did she get veneers at 20 something — was she fixated on her teeth or is she an actor? Please don’t say Insta made her do it.

by Anonymousreply 16November 16, 2023 1:27 AM

She’ll probably get used to them. When someone I knew got them, they looked oversized at first, but not anymore.

She should smile to display her teeth in the pic. No one really rests with their mouth like that.

by Anonymousreply 17November 16, 2023 1:35 AM

You should always try to save your own teeth. Veneers and implants come with so many problems. Unless your friend’s teeth were falling out of her mouth, she should have worked with what she already had, gotten them straightened and bleached. Then left alone.

by Anonymousreply 18November 16, 2023 1:36 AM

I just came in to say it's odd how you never hear the OPPOSITE of OP's headline:

Female/Male friend is ecstatic about his/her amazing veneers!

by Anonymousreply 19November 16, 2023 1:37 AM

Is that a pic of Gary Busey?

by Anonymousreply 20November 16, 2023 1:37 AM

r16 She had braces as a teenager but her teeth were still crooked afterwards (yes, she wore her retainer) The orthodontist tried to convince her the teeth were straight and said there was nothing more she could do. Also, they were yellow no matter what whitening products she used. She was very insecure.

Here's are two before pics.

by Anonymousreply 22November 16, 2023 2:20 AM

First World problem.

I happen to have perfect teeth. No food, but perfect teeth.

by Anonymousreply 23November 16, 2023 2:24 AM

Can she move to England?

by Anonymousreply 24November 16, 2023 2:24 AM

I see what she means about them looking masculine. They remind me of my grandma's boyfriends' dentures. They're a little large relative to the size of her mouth.

But I wouldn't tell her that. Just tell her that they look better than they used to, and she is young enough to be able to save up to get them done again down the road if she continues to dislike them. They do look better than they used to, but they're clearly not the transformation she was hoping for.

by Anonymousreply 25November 16, 2023 2:25 AM

r21 Seriously though, how could the orthodontist claim those teeth looked straight after braces? They're obviously still crooked.

by Anonymousreply 26November 16, 2023 2:26 AM

Did she get them done in Mexico?

by Anonymousreply 27November 16, 2023 2:26 AM

Did she upgrade her vaginal dentata also?

by Anonymousreply 28November 16, 2023 2:27 AM

OP, I could post a pic of my jacked natural teeth, but that would be nasty - kind of like those last photos. What the hell is the matter with you? I think someone is about to slap you in the head.

by Anonymousreply 29November 16, 2023 2:28 AM

r25 This is why I feel sorry for her. She's always been very insecure about her teeth. Veneers seemed to be the solution, and now she looks even worse.

by Anonymousreply 30November 16, 2023 2:28 AM

Jesus look at those chompers! Don't stick a cock or a Tootsie Pop in there!

by Anonymousreply 31November 16, 2023 2:30 AM

Why did she put chicklets on her teeth? Odd choice.

A true friend wakes up in the jail cell alongside their errant pal, so to speak.

Downplay the dental work and, instead, praise her many other attributes that attracted your friendship. Tell her the new look is an improvement and then let it go. As a friend you're supposed to support her, especially after such an expensive and likely irreversible decision.

Be happy.

She looks Irish. It’s hard for some people to get their teeth to look white against pale skin. Tell her they look good bc they do look better than they did. She will relax, smile more and people will start to compliment her bright smile whether just because you can’t miss it or maybe for real. She’ll grow into them.

by Anonymousreply 37November 16, 2023 3:00 AM

by Anonymousreply 38November 16, 2023 3:02 AM

Covering the grey tooth was a genius move.

by Anonymousreply 39November 16, 2023 4:03 AM

r37 How does she look Irish? The skin color or facial shape?

by Anonymousreply 40November 16, 2023 10:42 AM

They look a lot better than the "before" photo. Any dental change, even an upgrade, is a shock at first. She'll get used to it and smiling around her new teeth will start to feel normal soon.

She's lucky she can afford all of the dental care that she's had done.

by Anonymousreply 41November 16, 2023 11:13 AM

They look fine.

by Anonymousreply 42November 16, 2023 11:19 AM

She needs the two on either side of her front teeth shortened a bit. What did she do about the lower teeth?

I have veneers on my front two teeth. I broke them when I was 13 and had years of bonding. The dentist finally talked me into veneers but wanted to do the top six teeth and I said no way, my other teeth were perfect. So now my front two teeth are a hair more prominent than the rest but I am not ever going to compromise healthy teeth out of vanity. I’m on my second set of veneers because one started chipping after 15 years and having them removed and replaced was just as much of an ordeal as the first time getting them done.

by Anonymousreply 43November 16, 2023 2:57 PM

How much are veneers on a couple teeth?

by Anonymousreply 44November 17, 2023 2:49 PM

They always look weird to me. I think there are a lot of dentists doing them who shouldn’t be, like bad cosmetic surgery. They often look too big for the mouth, and I think your upper lip will stick to them, not slide easily like real teeth. You see a lot of bad ones on reality shows. Shep on Southern Charm and that son of the 2 scam artists that went to prison come to mind. They all look like the same, no individual uniqueness like real teeth. I knew a woman who got each tooth individually bonded because it was cheaper. That looks weird too, especially as you get older and your gums start pulling away from the tooth at the top. The day-glo whitening or the overdone blueish cast…it all says no.

by Anonymousreply 45November 17, 2023 9:22 PM

They look like they're susceptible to termites.

by Anonymousreply 46November 17, 2023 9:58 PM

They look fine. Nobody will examine them as closely as your friend is, OP.

by Anonymousreply 47November 17, 2023 10:03 PM

Chewing gum mouth

by Anonymousreply 48November 17, 2023 10:03 PM

How much money did she spend for that?

by Anonymousreply 49November 17, 2023 10:12 PM

R3, veneers usually have to be re-done every ten years or so. They're not a permanent solution. Because the actual teeth they sit on have had the enamel removed, removing the veneers and using her own teeth is no longer an option.

I know someone who was considering getting them in his 20s, and when it was explained to him that he'd be going back and forking out every ten years for the rest of his life, he lost interest pretty quickly.

No doubt, at some point there's going to be a lot of people who can't afford to maintain them.

Yikes R50! I'm glad I have normal teeth and that whitening toothpaste has improved them.

It's funny how we often focus on our flaws and forget to be grateful for our normal bits.

Real "white" teeth aren't the color of non-design 1960s Pyrex dishes. Her veneers look like trash (I mean, Republican female politicians' teeth).

The mouth at R36 looks like an accordion keyboard.

by Anonymousreply 56November 18, 2023 1:14 AM

Meghan Markle has obvious veneers, probably even back to her molars, because she has such a ridiculously wide mouth, Her veneers always make me think of the rounded teeth on the Simpson characters.

by Anonymousreply 57November 18, 2023 2:25 AM

Prince William broke one of his front teeth a few years ago at a party. He got an emergency tooth cap or whatever put on that night. Ever since then, one of his front teeth noticeably sticks out before the others, and is another colour than the other. Jesus, the British hate dentistry, if they do such a piss poor job on the teeth of a future king. I remember a hilarious time when teaching a Parisian college student who couldn’t comprehend the state of the Queen Mother’s teeth. “But she is a Queen?…”, the student kept repeating in disbelief.

by Anonymousreply 66November 21, 2023 7:09 AM

R50 Every ten years? That’s a giant, expensive commitment. I also suspect that the underlying and supportive tissue must be retraumatized with each fitting. I know a guy who had his upper teeth veneered because he didn’t like the shape of his smile line (small incisor teeth). So he chose his new smile from a book at the cosmetic dentist’s office. He admitted that the procedure close to $20k in 2001.

About 18 years later, the veneers needed replacing. That procedure cost $56k because of the delicacy of fitting new veneers onto the “pegs” that anchor the porcelain replacement teeth. It’s all really expensive and complex. And each set lasts less time than the original set. That variable cost would stress me out as I aged. My friend’s wife was really mad because they had to withdraw savings to pay for this expensive dentistry.

In Australia we talk about "American teeth". In the old days it used to mean teeth that had had excellent orthodontics, which became popular much more recently here than it did in the US. We were admiring, and parents began saving the money to have it done for their children. Previously it was done here only on children with teeth so bad the dentist was concerned about their bites, but now it's done on pretty much everyone and a very large proportion of family dentists under 45 are either qualified orthodontists or studying to be so.

Today, however, "American teeth" refers to chicklet teeth, teeth that are too white to be real, and so on. Fake-looking, in other words. American celebrities who have flattering, convincing cosmetic dentistry just have "nice teeth", not "American teeth", if you see what I mean.

Your friend's teeth are definitely "American", OP. Sorry about that.

by Anonymousreply 68November 21, 2023 11:39 AM

She could eat a PBJ sandwich through the Venetian blinds with those chompers.

by Anonymousreply 69November 21, 2023 11:46 AM

I was thinking of getting veneers but I got braces instead. My orthodontist told me that once I get the braces off, I can just get a whitening treatment. I think that may be a better option.

by Anonymousreply 70November 21, 2023 1:11 PM

Why did she get them in the first place, and how did she think veneers look? They look fake 99 percent of the time. I have a friend who has a veneer for a tooth that was chipped and it looks similar to your friend's teeth - it's always a distraction to me.
