BREAKING: Iceland declares state of emergency over volcanic eruption threat

🌋 Are we all gonna die? 🌋

by Anonymousreply 143March 17, 2024 12:22 AM

Who knows. I'm not saying this is it, but when Mother Nature does decide to level us, I'm thinking it will be abruptly.

by Anonymousreply 1November 11, 2023 4:50 AM

I’m all for anything that breaks up the monotony of daily boredom and greed in the world. I never like to get my hopes up for world-changing events though, because I’m always disappointed when nothing happens or when things inevitably just go back to the status quo. If I can’t see full scale of nuclear war or complete societal collapse during my lifetime, I at least want to witness either a massive planetary impact or an eruption with global effects. A giant tsunami wouldn’t hurt either. Something FFS 😒

by Anonymousreply 2November 11, 2023 5:04 AM

Oh cool! I remember when the last Icelandic volcano with the unpronounceable name erupted about ten years ago and all flights in Europe were grounded for something like the days. My boss was in Europe when it happened and it gave us all a very nice ten day reprieve!

by Anonymousreply 3November 11, 2023 5:11 AM

Eyjafjallajökull. And it was 2010. Good times.

by Anonymousreply 4November 11, 2023 5:13 AM

This won't be an explosive eruption, just an oozer.

by Anonymousreply 5November 11, 2023 5:33 AM

I wanted a boom, an earth-shattering kaboom.

by Anonymousreply 6November 11, 2023 5:40 AM

I at least want to witness the most life altering force of this planet - love.

by Anonymousreply 7November 11, 2023 5:42 AM

I think we should drop a nuke in it.

by Anonymousreply 8November 11, 2023 5:45 AM

I was just watching a program about the formation of Earth.

Too many volcanic eruptions at once blanket the ozone layer with methane and carbon dioxide , which deflect the sun’s warmth and cause centuries long ice ages.

Keep your sweaters handy. And stock up on canned goods. 90% of plant and animal life will go extinct.

Richard, I will not have you erupting. It’s very lower-middle class.

by Anonymousreply 10November 11, 2023 7:17 AM

Just lay on the couch and let it blow.

by Anonymousreply 11November 11, 2023 8:03 AM

When you choose to live on an active volcano those are the chances you take

by Anonymousreply 14November 11, 2023 11:19 AM

How do I spell relief?

F-A-R-T

by Anonymousreply 15November 11, 2023 11:30 AM

R5, I can certainly relate.

by Anonymousreply 16November 11, 2023 11:42 AM

Me too, r9!

"Nova" on PBS., just a couple of weeks ago.

It blew my mind (get it? "blew") to learn that I was wrong.

I just assumed that Space, when Earth was created, basically decided, "Oh, and Earth? Here. Over time, I'll dole out a little troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere. Those will help with that life-creating thingy."

But no. All of that was created by Earth!

I coulda fell out of my Barca-lounger.

She will be appropriately attired in her swan costume when the eruption occurs.

I saw the swan dress at the McQueen exhibit in London-- let's just say a photograph of it is better than reality.

by Anonymousreply 23November 11, 2023 4:35 PM

Iceland only has like 300k people.

That's slightly more than my hometown.

Who thought a scenic, peaceful little place like Iceland would be the world’s undoing?

I wonder if they’re just doing it for attention.

by Anonymousreply 35November 12, 2023 6:30 AM

[quote] Who thought a scenic, peaceful little place like Iceland would be the world’s undoing?

An Icelandic volcanic eruption in the late 18th century led to an extended cold period and famine in Europe which may have contributed to the French Revolution.

by Anonymousreply 36November 12, 2023 6:34 AM

They’re trouble. And should be shunned.

by Anonymousreply 37November 12, 2023 4:05 PM

The 2010 eruption in Iceland cause huge disruption of both trans Atlantic air travel and Western Europe's air travel.

by Anonymousreply 105December 19, 2023 4:52 AM

Thrill-seekers last night defied danger warnings and ventured near the site of a huge volcano eruption in Iceland - despite bubbling lava and smoke being spewed into the sky.

Astonishing pictures - including one of scores of cars queuing to get close to the area - show people trying to witness Mother Nature's work first-hand.

Despite the obvious dangers, the Ministry of the Environment was forced to issue repeated warnings to those thinking about getting close to the volcano. 'Think about someone other than yourself and follow the guidelines of the public safety. Please,' one spokesman begged.

by Anonymousreply 106December 19, 2023 5:59 AM

What amazes me about this is the confirmation that Earth (and the universe) are still creating. Even constantly creating.

We're here for this infinitesimally short time and the natural world looks static or permanent to us. But it's not. Nothing is. Everything is always changing, forever. Everything is always creating.

by Anonymousreply 119December 19, 2023 9:42 PM

by Anonymousreply 120December 19, 2023 9:50 PM

R119 well said. All of human history is but a blip in time.

by Anonymousreply 122December 20, 2023 6:17 AM

I agree, R119. What I find amazing also is that this planet can't help but burst with life, even through several mass extinctions. And, there is no life any place else that we know of in all the emptiness.

by Anonymousreply 123December 20, 2023 8:41 PM

Well that stinks.

What does the volcano smell like?

One that is hard to ignore is the aroma of volcanic gases. Two gases that tend to define a visitor's nasal experience, and that geochemists use to define conditions within the volcano, are sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is the gas that smells like rotten eggs.
