Seeing a Guy who is a "Republican"

I have been seeing a guy who says he is a Republican. What should I do?

First, he thinks Donald Trump is, to use his words, a "carpet bagger."

He says he is a federalist, that is giving more power to the states. He says things are done better at the state level. He said taking issues like abortion to the states was the right thing and the responsibility is on the citizens to educate people on the issues and register them to vote. He cites Georgia and Ohio are great examples of democracy working the way it should.

He doesn't think abortions should be legal after 12-15 weeks, unless the life of the mother is at stake. He does think gay marriage is a Constitutional right, but thinks their needs to be reform on transiting (he says it is too easy and he feels for their mental health).

by Anonymousreply 201December 1, 2023 6:59 AM

Ask him when’s the last time he had an abortion.

by Anonymousreply 1November 10, 2023 8:41 PM

Plain and simple: your new boyfriend is a racist, sexist piece of shit. Dump his fucking ass ASAP.

by Anonymousreply 2November 10, 2023 8:42 PM

Ask him if he believes men can have an abortion.

by Anonymousreply 3November 10, 2023 8:42 PM

Note- he is a great person who will drop everything to do something for someone.

He has a love of books, opera, classical music, wine, travel, and politics. I have learned so much from him. He always breaks things down where I can understand them.

by Anonymousreply 4November 10, 2023 8:42 PM

Nowhere do you say how you feel about any of these issues OP. How do you?

by Anonymousreply 5November 10, 2023 8:43 PM

By chance would your new boyfriend's name be Tim Scott or Mike Johnson?

by Anonymousreply 6November 10, 2023 8:44 PM

[quote]thinks their needs to be reform on transiting

I agree. We need to invest in high speed rail, while also improving our bridge infrastructure.

by Anonymousreply 7November 10, 2023 8:45 PM

Does he believe that the issue of human slavery should be decided by the states?

by Anonymousreply 8November 10, 2023 8:45 PM

R5 I honestly don't know enough on politics to really have an opinion. I just want everyone to be happy. Politics is too ugly for me

by Anonymousreply 9November 10, 2023 8:45 PM

How is he racist?

by Anonymousreply 10November 10, 2023 8:46 PM

Smother him in his sleep.

by Anonymousreply 11November 10, 2023 8:49 PM

Seems like a center road kind of guy. There's nothing wrong with that. It's just that both sides like to fly to the extremes and are stupidly loud about it.

by Anonymousreply 12November 10, 2023 8:49 PM

He’s a member of a party that actively seeks to harm communities of color through things like racial gerrymandering and voter suppression.

If he’s not racist, he’s complacent being a part of a group that, as a body, is.

by Anonymousreply 13November 10, 2023 8:49 PM

[quote]He does think gay marriage is a Constitutional right

What a shocking coincidence that the civil right he doesn't think should be left up to the states is the one that directly impacts him!

by Anonymousreply 14November 10, 2023 8:50 PM

[quote] but thinks their needs to be reform on transiting

R7 beat me to the punch on one aspect, but I’m gonna damn well say it…

Oh Dear!

by Anonymousreply 15November 10, 2023 8:50 PM

OP, when you bring him his martini, and he puts down his New York Post, does he make fun of your puny cocklet?

by Anonymousreply 16November 10, 2023 8:51 PM

[quote] He doesn't think abortions should be legal after 12-15 weeks, unless the life of the mother is at stake.

How close does the mother have to be to death for this to kick in, as far as he's concerned? Absolutely 100% verge of death, as seems to be the case in wingnut states, or something else? What if it's the fetus that is dying, or doomed to die within a short time after being born? What about rape and incest? Why 15 weeks? What is sacred about that number? What if it's 20 weeks? What is the big moral difference?

by Anonymousreply 17November 10, 2023 8:56 PM

"What should I do? "

Put a pillow over his face and sit on it 😜

by Anonymousreply 18November 10, 2023 9:00 PM

Calm down libtards. If you go through life hating everyone who doesn't think like you and vote like you, you are the prejudiced ones. There have to be multiple points of view to make a society get to the best ideas. Equating all republicans as pro slavery is silly. Remember civil discourse? Some of you sounds like a bunch of hysterical ninnies.

by Anonymousreply 19November 10, 2023 9:03 PM

He of course thinks slavery is wrong and should not be given to the states. How did we jump to that anyway?

He is a good person overall. I would definitively be more of the feminine/domesticated one. He reads the NYT and the WSJ. He also likes the PBSNewshour, Firing Line, and Frontline.

His favorite films are Lawrence of Arabia and The Maltese Falcon. He's only 30!

by Anonymousreply 20November 10, 2023 9:08 PM

OP, level with us. He has a huge cock and you hate his politics.

by Anonymousreply 21November 10, 2023 9:09 PM

R21 We haven't had sex yet. We've only been seeing each for about a month and he says he only sleeps with people he is committed to, which I respect.

by Anonymousreply 22November 10, 2023 9:11 PM

How much time does he spend in log cabins?

by Anonymousreply 23November 10, 2023 9:12 PM

do you hand him his slippers, smoking jacket and a martini when he comes home from work?

by Anonymousreply 24November 10, 2023 9:13 PM

There is no such thing as a "Federalist." There are only assholes who believe that states should have all the power - until a state's VOTERS overwhelmingly for something that "Federalists" don't like. THEN they believe whatever it is should be federally banned.

This guy sounds like a hypocritical asshole and he will become more and more of one over time. Guaranteed.

by Anonymousreply 25November 10, 2023 9:14 PM

OP = Stepford Wife.

by Anonymousreply 26November 10, 2023 9:15 PM

[quote] Calm down libtards.

I am calm, Yoda calm.

[quote] If you go through life hating everyone who doesn't think like you and vote like you, you are the prejudiced ones.

Prejudice is about prejudging what somebody's views and outlook and intelligence and goodness are, depending on external factors. When you know their views and outlook, you are dealing with something else and not some "prejudice."

[quote] There have to be multiple points of view to make a society get to the best ideas.

True, but trivial. There can certainly be points of view that actually make you a bad person for embracing them. Very much including political points of view. And of course, some ideas are just stupid and wrong and have no real value, even in support of some mythical goal of diversity of viewpoints.

[quote] Equating all republicans as pro slavery is silly. Remember civil discourse? Some of you sounds like a bunch of hysterical ninnies.

Yes, I do remember civil discourse, in the faraway time. Sadly it was all in ancient history, and there are no written records or survivors. By the way, if your first sentence contains the word "libtards" you may want to rethink how civil your own discourse is.

by Anonymousreply 27November 10, 2023 9:15 PM

I get the impression that his family has money. Just from the way he talks and acts.

He doesn't watch TV like the Real Housewives, which I love. He reads or watches the news or classy movies like Lawrence of Arabia or Gosford Park.

by Anonymousreply 28November 10, 2023 9:17 PM

Oh, God. Is he from the South?

This won’t end well as you’re not compatible.

by Anonymousreply 29November 10, 2023 9:17 PM

Are you entering into one of those can’t be broken Mike Johnson kind of marriages ? If not then quit overthinking and enjoy yourself.

by Anonymousreply 30November 10, 2023 9:18 PM

I've only skimmed this but feel like I know too much. I wish y'all the best, OP, although I think that this won't end well.

by Anonymousreply 31November 10, 2023 9:19 PM

So I think a lot of his Republicanism is from being in this white upper class shelter his entire life. He also has an MBA and a JD. He is very economic and academic minded. I think he has never met a "real" person until me.

R29 He is from New Hampshire, but we live in the south.

by Anonymousreply 32November 10, 2023 9:20 PM

OP? What makes you a "real" person? Just curious.

by Anonymousreply 33November 10, 2023 9:25 PM

R32

Let’s hope your man is a reader of DL because that would solve your problem. His politics would no longer be an issue.

by Anonymousreply 34November 10, 2023 9:25 PM

Your boyfriend is a terrible person. There's no getting around it. Yes, he may be kind to those around him, and help others when help is needed. But essentially he approves of, and votes for, people who would deny you your constitutional rights as a citizen, he votes for people who would take away needed money from the poor and give it to the rich, he votes for people who do their best to restrict the rights of all minority groups, from women to people of color etc.

No matter how nice he may seem to you, he is not nice. He is, again, a terrible person.

by Anonymousreply 35November 10, 2023 9:29 PM

R33 Real person as in I had a middle class childhood, I went to a small state school where I struggled to pay rent, I got a crappy cubicle job out of college, etc. I watch reality tv and listen to rap music.

He went to private schools his entire life. He watches PBS and only listens to classical music.

We have class differences, but we like each other. I have always thought of myself as super liberal but he has some great points and I brought it to DL to discuss.

by Anonymousreply 36November 10, 2023 9:30 PM

OP, come off it. You never had sex? Do you kiss and make out?

by Anonymousreply 37November 10, 2023 9:32 PM

[quote] Prejudice is about prejudging what somebody's views and outlook and intelligence and goodness are

Prejudice!

Wrote a song ‘bout it! Want to hear it?

Here it go!

by Anonymousreply 38November 10, 2023 9:34 PM

[QUOTE]He of course thinks slavery is wrong and should not be given to the states. How did we jump to that anyway?

Because prior to the American Civil War the issue of slavery WAS entirely in the hands of the states and your "Federalist" boyfriend wants to return to the good ol' days when this country was more divided than it is now. You sound like kind of person that the thread below is all about.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 39November 10, 2023 9:36 PM

OP, you stated you didn’t know much about politics and then you said you’re “super liberal”???

by Anonymousreply 40November 10, 2023 9:37 PM

This thread is FAKE.

by Anonymousreply 41November 10, 2023 9:38 PM

I think you have to be trolling or you’re a complete idiot.

by Anonymousreply 42November 10, 2023 9:39 PM

R25 is absolutely correct. Not quite the same thing as dealing with hypocritical Federalists, but along the same lines.

I worked with a guy awhile ago who was a selectman or some leader in his tiny, podunky New Hampshire village. He was telling me about how great it was that most everyone there were libertarian and left each other to their own business.

EXCEPT for the one house and property that became very trashy when its owners died and their kids neglected it. The town had to take custody of it and force the children to sell it. It was bought by someone who spun it off and sold it to Dollar General or some other shitty store. They erected a too-large eyesore of a sign and put the driveway entrance on the wrong street, in the opinion of the townspeople. So the council this coworker was on was currently trying to fight that and tell the store what they needed to do with their own property.

by Anonymousreply 43November 10, 2023 9:44 PM

Someone up thread seems to think that gerrymandering is only done by one party.

That is complete bullshit.

Frankly, I think we should ask Canada to draw our electoral district boundaries based solely on geography. That would eliminate any and all gerrymandering.

by Anonymousreply 44November 10, 2023 9:47 PM

How big is his cock?

by Anonymousreply 45November 10, 2023 9:48 PM

[quote]he says he only sleeps with people he is committed to,

Oh... that means there's Sum Ting Wong

by Anonymousreply 46November 10, 2023 9:48 PM

OP, in this thread you've claimed "I honestly don't know enough on politics to really have an opinion. I just want everyone to be happy. Politics is too ugly for me"...

But in another thread ('𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐇.𝐖. 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐡'), you said, "I have spent a lot of time studying modern politics and the American presidents from Eisenhower to Biden."

Which is it?

(You're also the one who, on the '𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡' thread, trolled, "I am a gay Presbyterian please help." )

by Anonymousreply 47November 10, 2023 9:51 PM

As an outsider I find American politics so soul destroying. You are either Blue or Red and nothing in-between.

by Anonymousreply 48November 10, 2023 9:52 PM

[quote]He says he is a federalist, that is giving more power to the states. He says things are done better at the state level. He said taking issues like abortion to the states was the right thing and the responsibility is on the citizens to educate people on the issues and register them to vote.

On some issues, you cannot have a patchwork of legislation, especially when some states decide that going across state lines to engage in a perfectly legal activity in that state is breaking the state law.

Ask you bf whether he's in favor of a democracy or a republic. You'll have an answer about whether he knows what he's talking about or whether it's all just convenient soundbites to hide his true nature.

by Anonymousreply 49November 10, 2023 9:55 PM

R19 voted for a carnival barker to be president but thinks liberals are "ninnies"

by Anonymousreply 50November 10, 2023 9:57 PM

Where do you live r48? How "in between" are you as far as your own country's politics are? Be honest. Everybody likes to picture himself as the perfect centrist, but really, are you? Are you even mildly leftist in your country, and if you are, just what do you say the Republicans in the U.S. are correct about?

by Anonymousreply 51November 10, 2023 9:57 PM

Jesus Christ, OP, is your name Opie?

by Anonymousreply 52November 10, 2023 10:01 PM

When did "federalism" come to mean "giving more power to the states"? Are Republicans fucking retarded?

by Anonymousreply 53November 10, 2023 10:05 PM

I was going to ask the same question, R53.

by Anonymousreply 54November 10, 2023 10:08 PM

R47

“Which is it”

The op is obviously a teller of tall untruthful tales. They are not to be trusted or believed. Like this made up story.

Who would believe that any sane person would spread the personal details of someone they allegedly liked on the internet for 100s maybe 1000s of people in time to read.

Enough info posted on line about who he is so that someone with just a little bit of natural detective in them could track the alleged real person down. It’s a very small state.

I am going with this is all bullshit. For the sake of the alleged boyfriend I hope so.

by Anonymousreply 55November 10, 2023 10:10 PM

Who is he planning on voting for in 2024?

[quote] He says he is a federalist, that is giving more power to the states.

This is literally the exact opposite of what federalism means.

a supporter of federal government

1. : a supporter of federal government. especially, often capitalized : a supporter of the adoption of the U.S. Constitution. 2. capitalized : a member of a major political party in the early years of the U.S. favoring a strong central national government.

So - your boyfriend has these theories of how things should work, but let's look at fucking reality.

Republicans try to suppress voting anywhere they can and gerrymander to keep themselves in power.

Republican administrations have single-handedly blown up our deficit every time they're in power, then when they're not in power, say we have to be more budget-friendly and not spend so wrecklessly.

Republicans have not offered a single policy to help the lives of the middle and lower classes in the last 20 years - just block it.

Republicans are AGAINST healthcare access for all and want to reduce or eliminate Social Security and Medicare - yes, they do.

And look at their base. Racists, Fascists, White Supremacists, People who want to ban books, people who are anti-gay.

Why would a gay man look at that party and who it's filled with and say - yep, that's the one for me! Particularly a gay man?

Your boyfriend sounds like a rose-tinted idiot, if I can be honest. He believes in political theory more than actual practice and what is currently going on.

by Anonymousreply 62November 10, 2023 10:48 PM

It’s an EST

by Anonymousreply 63November 10, 2023 10:51 PM

Like DL is not full of rich white folks

by Anonymousreply 64November 10, 2023 10:54 PM

R2 I do find it interesting that the same people (far left liberals) who categorize a group of people (conservatives) like that and think that’s fine lose their shit when someone else says “all Muslims are terrorists” or “all blacks are criminals.”

Someone who is center right is going to be very different than someone who is far right, just like someone who is center left (me) is going to be very different than someone who is far left (you).

by Anonymousreply 65November 10, 2023 10:59 PM

R65 fails to understand recent changes in the two party system’s respective coalitions.

by Anonymousreply 66November 10, 2023 11:06 PM

R66 I know perfectly well. The far right and far left are both batshit crazy.

by Anonymousreply 67November 10, 2023 11:16 PM

No—that’s not it.

by Anonymousreply 68November 10, 2023 11:19 PM

R68 Yes it is

by Anonymousreply 69November 10, 2023 11:20 PM

by Anonymousreply 70November 10, 2023 11:22 PM

R69 troll on, dude…but you’re just treading water.

by Anonymousreply 71November 10, 2023 11:23 PM

My bf says there are three parties:

Democrats

Republicans

MAGA Trumpers

by Anonymousreply 72November 10, 2023 11:49 PM

R70/R71 Are you talking about the party or the people? The party, yes. The people have varying reasons for why they vote the way they do. Personally, I couldn’t bring myself to vote republican, but I also understand that the Democratic Party isn’t doing shit to help the people either.

by Anonymousreply 73November 10, 2023 11:50 PM

by Anonymousreply 76November 10, 2023 11:56 PM

R75 Okay lol. I will make my move. Is he a moderate Republican?

by Anonymousreply 77November 10, 2023 11:59 PM

R76 No, YOU need to learn how to read. I was talking about individual voters, not the parities themselves.

by Anonymousreply 78November 11, 2023 12:12 AM

If he’s a Republican then he’s also a sloppy pig bottom who will cry after he comes. They always are.

by Anonymousreply 79November 11, 2023 12:15 AM

by Anonymousreply 81November 11, 2023 12:25 AM

R81 why do you say that?

by Anonymousreply 82November 11, 2023 12:27 AM

There are many things which even moderate Republicans have supported, long before Trump came along, which make anyone still willing to be an open member of the modern Republican Party immediately suspect.

OP, at best they are the type who would go against their ethics and morals to get a couple of points off their effective tax rate. Never forget that your new fellow will drop you the second it benefits himself.

Damn. That was precise and brutal.

by Anonymousreply 84November 11, 2023 12:42 AM

I choose the former. Look it up you lazy fool.

by Anonymousreply 88November 11, 2023 1:31 AM

R27 Oh, Honey. Libtards is me being kind. And look at your trying to break down my post. I'm flattered. Mainly because I was drunk when I wrote it. Fa la la la la la la la la.

by Anonymousreply 89November 11, 2023 6:26 AM

There are no centrist Republicans anymore. They're all MAGA, some are just ultra MAGA and others are MAGA lite. Now you can still consider yourself conservative or centrist, but if you use the term "Republican" you are a MAGA, period. It's the party of Trump now, just own it.

by Anonymousreply 90November 11, 2023 6:44 AM

[quote]He said taking issues like abortion to the states was the right thing

Ask him why the Republicans are trying to take it AWAY from the states now. Ask him why Lindsay Graham and Tim Scott want a national ban.

by Anonymousreply 91November 11, 2023 7:10 AM

R51, I live in one of those 'Socialist' countries that so called Repugs hate with a passion. Politics here is not mentioned much and no one talks about who they voted for etc. My partner of 40 odd years was bought up centre-right. I was bought up a leftie/greenie and neither of us are religious. Life's easy without politics screwing with people. As I've said on another thread America needs more political parties, your 2 party system is f*cked.

by Anonymousreply 92November 11, 2023 9:32 AM

You just need to see if the dick is worth it, OP. Him holding back and not fucking either means he has small balls (low sex drive), he's fucking around or is used to guys just wanting his dick (and nothing else) after they see him naked.

Most likely option 1.

by Anonymousreply 93November 11, 2023 9:53 AM

R13, Muslims are members of a religion that seeks to throw gays off rooftops. Let’s ban Muslims from coming into the US. Even moderate Muslims are complicit in that problem.

by Anonymousreply 94November 11, 2023 10:09 AM

So - your boyfriend has these theories of how things should work, but let's look at fucking reality.

[quote]Republicans try to suppress voting anywhere they can and gerrymander to keep themselves in power.

So? Democrats want to let more and more people across the border so that they can get more blue voters and get more power.

[quote]Republican administrations have single-handedly blown up our deficit every time they're in power, then when they're not in power, say we have to be more budget-friendly and not spend so wrecklessly.

True. The last president to balance the budget was Bill Clinton.

[quote]Republicans have not offered a single policy to help the lives of the middle and lower classes in the last 20 years - just block it.

What have Democrats done?

[quote]Republicans are AGAINST healthcare access for all and want to reduce or eliminate Social Security and Medicare - yes, they do.

There are Democrats that want to ban books as well, like To Kill a Mockingbird and Huck Finn. And the Democrats have their own extremists, like the “peaceful protesters” of 2020.

[quote]Why would a gay man look at that party and who it's filled with and say - yep, that's the one for me! Particularly a gay man?

Your boyfriend sounds like a rose-tinted idiot, if I can be honest. He believes in political theory more than actual practice and what is currently going on.

by Anonymousreply 95November 11, 2023 10:21 AM

R72, your BF is an idiot. The Republican Party is MAGA.

With the Dems, yes, there are some far leftists but they are mostly out there on their own.

In the GOP, the far right is the base of power.

by Anonymousreply 96November 11, 2023 10:27 AM

The U.S. is the argument against Federalism. States would be corrupt, fiefdoms that would destroy democracy. Look at FL or TX. Those states cannot be left to govern themselves, they would erode the U.S. constitution if given the chance.

by Anonymousreply 97November 11, 2023 10:36 AM

R97

Yes democracy is far too important to our way of life to entrust it to the people the voters.

People love voting, the will of the people, and most of all democracy , right up until they find themselves on the short end of election results. Then it’s the people who can’t be trusted.

by Anonymousreply 98November 11, 2023 12:08 PM

R91 I asked him about this. He said a nation ban was "ridiculous."

He said states voting on abortion, like Ohio, is how a democracy should work. He said Republicans have fought to get Roe overturned and back to the states for 50 years and they finally got it, but they are being greedy. He said they are being unrealistic because a national ban would never pass in the House or Senate as close as it is. He said there are a few pro-choice Republican Senators.

by Anonymousreply 99November 11, 2023 3:44 PM

We were texting last night and this is what he sent:

"Civics education is the most important issue facing our democracy. A majority of Americans can name more American Idol judges than Supreme Court justices. That is a major problem facing our country if we expect people to vote. We must educate them. Look at Georgia. When Stacy Abrams lost she educated citizens and helped them register to vote. Georgia turned blue. while I disagree with Abrams on many issues, she did what good citizens should do: educate people in civics and voting.

Several people have been fighting for the civics cause: Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and David Souter, the Hollywood actor Richard Dreyfuss, Condoleezza Rice, the historian David McCollough, just to name a few. There was a bipartisan Senate bill last year sponsored by John Cornyn and Chris Coons on civics education funding. I am excited to see what this leads to."

by Anonymousreply 100November 11, 2023 3:59 PM

I don't know who the bigger idiot here is: the neanderthal boyfriend with his air of privilege and entitlement or the queen who keeps running back here seeking out the opinions of people on an anonymous message board.

by Anonymousreply 101November 11, 2023 4:02 PM

[quote] As I've said on another thread America needs more political parties, your 2 party system is f*cked.

Agree, especially since one of those parties at this point is just a cult built around a needy corrupt clown. I do wish the House had a more parliamentary structure, or maybe dissolved parties altogether. One of the stupid dynamics we've developed is this need for the House to either be the sworn enemy of the president, fighting him bitterly every step of the way, or an extension of the White House, carrying out his plans and proposals. Not really how it was ever supposed to work. Would love to see coalitions forming and dissolving based on the issue at hand instead.

But since the House can barely get its shit together in time to pass a budget, major constitutional changes are probably beyond hope.

by Anonymousreply 102November 11, 2023 4:28 PM

R101 okay rude

by Anonymousreply 103November 11, 2023 4:30 PM

I am honestly asking for advice?

by Anonymousreply 104November 11, 2023 5:02 PM

And while we're on the topic of the states being independent, the blue states are carrying the red states. Places like NY or Cally spend a dollar in tax revenue but only get back a percentage. Poor shitholes like Mississippi and Alabama contribute less to the Treasury but get back more in subsidies.

We're carrying these backward, third world states. They would immediately collapse into Somalia if left to their own devices. So the whole states rights thing is bullshit, we need a Federal government.

by Anonymousreply 105November 11, 2023 5:09 PM

If nothing else, the civilized states should come together to form some kind of public option for health care. California can do it by itself, but for most states, some kind of coalition will probably be necessary, and yes, that brings in weird and stupid complications. But still, it would be worth it. The entire Midwest should have some kind of public option buy-in. We all know the primitive South will make any reasonable thing impossible in Congress, so states will have to come together themselves.

In that sense, OP, I see what your boyfriend is getting at with "federalism."

by Anonymousreply 106November 11, 2023 5:14 PM

[quote]Agree, especially since one of those parties at this point is just a cult built around a needy corrupt clown.

So sad and so true.

by Anonymousreply 107November 11, 2023 5:17 PM

From someone who inverts the definition of Federalism 180°. Dunning, meet Kruger.

by Anonymousreply 108November 11, 2023 5:30 PM

OP you don't seem very bright, and come off as feeling extremely inferior to your "boyfriend," who you seem to think hung the moon and stars. Have you written a song for him yet? A sonnet? (that's a type of poem, by the way).

You also seem extremely naive and are acting like a teenager. You're seeking validation from him, and from us. You seem to think this guy's shit doesn't stink, when it does. He sits on a toilet like the rest of us and what comes out of his ass STINKS. Stop acting like this guy is some movie star or bright and intelligent political thinker.

You're infatuated. You need to have sex with this guy and get it over with because your idolization of him is a bit much.

by Anonymousreply 109November 11, 2023 5:33 PM

R109 Wow. That is really harsh. I might not be the smartest person here but I have a heart. He is a person who has taught me a lot about culture and history I never would have known before.

You are all talking politics and not what I asked.

by Anonymousreply 110November 11, 2023 5:41 PM

Well, r110, your original question was:

[quote] I have been seeing a guy who says he is a Republican. What should I do?

Who the fuck knows? Do you like him? Stay with him. Do you not like him? Break up with him. Should you ask a bunch of strangers online if you like him or don't like him? No, you should not.

Either way, who the fuck knows if you don't.

Glad you have a heart, but try not to be a complete moron about everything else.

by Anonymousreply 111November 11, 2023 5:46 PM

R111 I am conflicted that's why I am asking.

by Anonymousreply 112November 11, 2023 6:00 PM

OP are you dating Kelsey Grammer? His texts are giving wannabe erudite. Maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but he comes off as condescending. Does this man ever ask you what YOU think about abortion, states rights, immigration, etc? And do you know how YOU feel about these issues?

I think you're focusing on his actions VS your feelings. Also, and this is my opinion: if you live in America, being "apolitical" = complacent. Do you vote, at least?

by Anonymousreply 113November 11, 2023 6:18 PM

R95 is stupid and unhinged.

by Anonymousreply 114November 11, 2023 6:30 PM

R113 He does ask me, but I am not well informed really.

I think abortion is sad and wish it didn't happen. It is sad for everyone involved. But I'm not a woman. My mother taught me to not talk politics or religion because it was too divisive. she said art and travel were better topics to discuss.

by Anonymousreply 115November 11, 2023 6:36 PM

R102 doesn’t understand why we in fact have a two-party system…and why that won’t change in anyone’s lifetime. It is what it is. For simplicity’s sake:

Excerpt: The need to win popular support in a republic led to the American invention of voter-based political parties in the 1790s. Americans were especially innovative in devising new campaign techniques that linked public opinion with public policy through the party. Political scientists and historians have divided the development of America's two-party system into six or so eras or "party systems", starting with the Federalist Party, which supported the ratification of the Constitution, and the Democratic-Republican Party or the Anti-Administration party (Anti-Federalists), which opposed a powerful central government.

by Anonymousreply 117November 11, 2023 6:45 PM

So it goes ;)

by Anonymousreply 118November 11, 2023 6:46 PM

You don't think it's red flag that he mostly mentions Republicans? He's taking advantage of your naivete and lack of interest in politics because in reality more educated people in things like Civics vote Dem. College educated people are more likely to vote Dem.

by Anonymousreply 125November 11, 2023 7:11 PM

I think you disregard the practical reality of our system. The system (including the parties as a political construct) is not necessarily the problem, as we’ve managed to come this far since 1789. The American people need a secular awakening, so to speak…it will come, even if I and most others here in DL won’t be here to see it.

R129 Pro-life Haley? Why doesn't your bf want straight people (and raped women) to make the decision themselves on that question? What's with this desire to control other people's medical and lifestyle choices?

[quote] He's taking advantage of your naivete and lack of interest in politics because in reality more educated people in things like Civics vote Dem. College educated people are more likely to vote Dem.

There are a lot of college educated people who don’t accurately civics or the Constitution, especially young people today who get a lot of misinformation for peers and even from professors. For example, college educated people who think the federal government can do whatever it needs to do for the public good have no understanding of enumerated powers.

by Anonymousreply 133November 11, 2023 7:37 PM

You could do better, OP. Call me.

by Anonymousreply 134November 11, 2023 7:43 PM

Why did you feel the need to make this story up OP? Looking at your previous posts, R47 nailed it. Are all of your posts lies?

by Anonymousreply 135November 11, 2023 8:15 PM

Is this whole story some sort of weird trolling attempt to imply there are good Log Cabin Republicans OP? I can answer that: NO. They'll be the first ones shoved in the ovens or sent to the camps if Dump takes over. Anyone labeling themselves as Republican anymore are MAGA trash.

by Anonymousreply 142November 11, 2023 10:40 PM

This is very slippery r142. Government is a necessary part of any legal gay marriage. This seems more in support of a couple of gay guys living together basically as roommates, with no legal implications.

[quote] “This is what I’ll tell you: People should live the way they want to live. I believe in freedom. I believe in making sure that people can live the way they want to live, and I believe the government needs to stay out of the way.”

[quote]R142: Nikki Haley is pro gay marriage. I don’t want to get into an entire thing about her, but if we were going to have a Republican president, she wouldn’t be marching us off to camps.

There's a lot of things that presidents do not directly determine, like inflation, gas prices, abortion, or gay marriage. When a president is elected, however, it sweeps their entire party into power, and this is what translates into policies on the ground. So, regardless of what Nikki Haley says is her personal opinion of LGBTs, the policies will still be determined by the Republican Party at large. It is against LGBT rights, and if homophobic assholes decide to bring a suit against some aspect of those rights, it can still get enacted at the state or federal level, or get handed off to the theocratic majority in the Supreme Court and passed into law. Nikki Haley's personal tolerance will protect no one.

by Anonymousreply 155November 12, 2023 1:24 AM

R104 Why is that a question? OP has upspeak? I bet he does?

[quote]"When I was in school you didn’t have sex ed until seventh grade. And even then, your parents had to sign whether you could take the class. That’s a decision for parents to make.”

[quote]I agree with this.

She's equating "saying gay" in a classroom with "sex ed," dumbass. You agree that kids shouldn't be allowed to mention gay orientation in school, even if they mention their same-sex parents or uncle or whoever? Because whatever weaselly excuses and evasions Republicans make, that's what this law boils down to—which Nikki thinks doesn't go far enough.

by Anonymousreply 157November 12, 2023 1:31 AM

John Chafee and Colin Powell are dead, and Lincoln Chafee identified Democrat and Libertarian. Olympia Snowe left office over a decade ago. Your bf might as well say he likes Abraham Lincoln too.
