Tennessee Williams choked on a bottle cap; Sonny Bono skied into a tree... which ones stuck in your mind?
Michael Lemoyne Kennedy, 39, skiing at Aspen while tossing a football around with fellow skiers as they headed down the slopes, also died from unexpected contact with a tree. Allegedly his last words on catching the ball were, "Hey, that was great" right before he hit the tree. New Years Day, 1998. He was pretty fucked up anyway, having just concluded an affair with the family babysitter, being shitfaced a lot, being pulled over for operating under the influence, and once reported by the local Saab dealer for bringing his car in for service filled with pretty raunchy porn. He was married to Frank Gifford's daughter but they'd separated before his death.

Albert Dekker
On May 5, 1968, Dekker was found dead in his Hollywood home by his fiancée, fashion model and future Love Boat creator Jeraldine Saunders. He was naked, kneeling in the bathtub, with a noose tightly wrapped around his neck and looped around the shower curtain rod. He was blindfolded, his wrists were handcuffed, there was a ball gag in his mouth, and two hypodermic needles were inserted in one arm. His body was covered in explicit words and drawings in red lipstick.[9]
Money and camera equipment were missing, but there was no sign of forced entry.

^^^ Not a celebrity but director Carlos Carvalho was filming a TV show in South Africa when he was killed. He was looking through the camera lens, filming a close-up of a bull giraffe called Gerald, when the animal swung its neck, headbutted him and killed him. Clara Bandick (she played Auntie Em in Wizard Of Oz)
[quote] On April 15, 1962, she returned home from Palm Sunday services at her church. She began rearranging her room, placing her favorite photos and memorabilia in prominent places. She laid out her resume and a collection of press clippings from her lengthy career. She dressed immaculately in an elegant royal blue dressing gown, and with her hair properly styled, she took an overdose of sleeping pills. She lay down on a couch, covered herself with a gold blanket over her shoulders, and tied a plastic bag over her head. She left the following note: “I am now about to make the great adventure. I cannot endure this agonizing pain any longer. It is all over my body. Neither can I face the impending blindness. I pray the Lord my soul to take. Amen

John Denver. Died when the plane he was flying ran out of fuel from the tank feeding the engine and crashed into Monterey Bay. The bizarre angle is poor design of the aircraft's fuel tank switch valve, which was behind the pilot and out of reach without having to turn his/her body 90 degrees while strapped in to reach it. If Denver could have reached the valve, he could have switched fuel tanks and landed safely.

Howard Holt, Australian PM. They never found Holt's body, learned how he died, or found a definitive reason for his death. Rumors ranged from drowning to suicide to being captured and held as a prisoner on a Chinese mini-sub.
The day Holt vanished was hot and humid Sunday, perfect for a swim. Before lunch on December 17, 1967, Holt decided to head to the local beach, close to the holiday house he owned at Portsea on the Victorian coast. “There was an around-the-world sailor who was sailing into (Melbourne’s) Port Philip Bay, and they went to see him. He (Holt) was there with a lady friend and couple of younger house guests.” "Holt was in many ways the quintessential Australian man – gregarious, sporty, a man with an appetite for life. He enjoyed diving and spearfishing although he wasn’t a terribly strong swimmer."
Witnesses on the beach told police the tide was unusually high with a strong undercurrent that day. Some said it was the highest they’d ever seen it. Despite that, Holt began to swim farther from the beach, into deeper water, a 1968 police report said. One of the last things Holt had said to the group before he went into the water was, “I know this beach like the back of my hand.” “(One witness said) she had watched Mr Holt continuously from the time he entered the surf and she saw the water become very turbulent around him very suddenly and appeared to boil and these conditions seemed to ‘swamp on him’,” the report described. “He was not seen again.” Ever.
Years later, Australians would honor their missing Prime Minister in a fashion befitting the country’s famous laconic sense of humor. They named a swimming pool after him.

[QUOTE]I assume the problem was he didn't understand the behaviour and didn't have a proper respect for the power of giraffes.
He didn't have guides or locals explain giraffe behavior? Even at our local zoo, it's apparent how strong they are. People can feed them branches of eucalyptus for $5. They are aggressive with each other bumping to get to the extended food. Some of their playthings are large plastic industrial barrels that are pretty heavy. They move them around with their heads like their light soccer balls.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | November 4, 2023 10:42 PM |
R39, it mentions in the article that they had been filming the TV series for a while and had become less wary of the animals. The giraffe just seemed inquisitive, not aggressive. I don't know if the director hadn't been distracted looking through the eyepiece of the camera and had been carefully watching the animal itself, if he would have had time to jump out of the way. Maybe it happened so fast, he would have been killed anyway.

The cowardly multimillionaire that was piloting the boat paid an underling to take the fall. The underling was found guilty of culpable homicide. Mexican law allowed him to pay a fine of $90 dollars in lieu of jail time, and had to pay a bit over $2000 in restitution to Kirsty's family. This was based on his wages, and would have been much higher if the cowardly millionaire had taken responsibility for killing Kirsty.

Rasputin On the night of December 29, 1916, a group of nobles who feared the powerful holy man’s influence with Russia’s royal family summoned him to the home of conspirator Prince Felix Yusupov and began to execute their murderous scheme. First, they poisoned him with tea and cakes that had been laced with cyanide, but he showed no signs of distress. Then he drank three glasses of wine, which had also been poisoned, and yet he carried on unfazed. By 2:30 AM, his dumbfounded killers huddled up in astonishment to figure out a new plan. Yusupov then took out a revolver, told Rasputin to “say a prayer,” and shot him in the chest before leaving him for dead. When the assassins returned to the body later on, Rasputin suddenly sprang up and attacked Yusupov before chasing his entire band of attackers into the courtyard where they bludgeoned him and shot him several more times — but still he wasn’t dead. Finally, they had to wrap him up and toss him into a freezing river where he eventually succumbed to hypothermia. And that’s not even the whole story of how Rasputin died.

While the beating was severe, what actually killed Novarro was his choking on his own vomit.

More accurately about Tennessee Williams. Better to drift away on downers than to choke on a bottle cap, IMO.
Chief Medical Examiner of New York City Elliot M. Gross reported that Williams had choked to death from inhaling the plastic cap of a bottle of the type used on bottles of nasal spray or eye solution.[48] The report was later corrected on August 14, 1983, to state that Williams had been using the plastic cap found in his mouth to ingest barbiturates[49] and had actually died from a toxic level of Seconal.[50]

Sam Cooke died under truly bizarre circumstances in 1964 at the age of 33. Sam Cooke was fatally shot by the manager of the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles after running into the hotel’s front office stark naked, drunk out of his mind and screaming that his clothes had been stolen. Sam Cooke had apparently checked into the dive motel earlier that evening with a prostitute who stole Sam Cooke’s wallet once he was drunk, as well as most of his clothes, in the belief that it would prevent him from running after her. An inebriated Sam Cooke ran to the motel manager’s office wearing only a sports jacket and one shoe and nothing else. He confronted the manager, named Bertha Franklin, and demanded to know where the woman he was with was located. Bertha Franklin responded by shooting Sam Cooke in the heart. After several inquiries, the shooting was ruled “justifiable homicide.” The last words Sam Cooke uttered: “Lady, you shot me.”

Tupac Shakur claimed that the Notorious B.I.G. was involved in a failed attempt on his life two years before Shakur was shot and killed. The Notorious B.I.G. was considered a suspect by the police due to their feud. Then six months later the Notorious B.I.G. himself was shot to death.
Both murders are officially unsolved to this day.

Jim Henson died of a staph infection, which blew up into toxic shock syndrome. He had had a sore throat and awoke coughing up blood. He waited a bit before going to the hospital, but finally went to the ER. Antibiotics took care of the infection, but too much damage had been done. He died the next day.
It's really bizarre that someone could die from a strep infection in a world with antibiotics.

On the night of 24 April 1996, Cammell shot himself in the head in his Hollywood Hills home. He took 45 minutes to die, during which time he talked about his movie Performance (which features Mick Jagger's character being shot in the head in an assisted suicide) with his wife, China Kong, asking her to provide him with a mirror so he could witness his own death. Friends told the press he was suffering from severe chronic depression. Cammell's depression reportedly was exacerbated by the studio's recutting his recent movie Wild Side without his permission.

Russ Columbo. On Sunday, September 2, 1934, Columbo was shot under peculiar circumstances by his longtime friend, photographer Lansing Brown, while Columbo was visiting him at home. Brown had a collection of firearms, and the two men were examining various pieces. Quoting Brown's description of the accident:
I was absent-mindedly fooling around with one of the guns. It was of a dueling design and works with a cap and trigger. I was pulling back the trigger and clicking it time after time. I had a match in my hand and when I clicked, apparently the match caught in between the hammer and the firing pin. There was an explosion. Russ slid to the side of his chair.
The ball ricocheted off a nearby table and hit Columbo above the left eye. Surgeons at Good Samaritan Hospital made an unsuccessful attempt to remove the ball from Columbo's brain; he died less than six hours after the shooting. Columbo's death was ruled an accident and Brown was exonerated from blame. His funeral Mass was attended by numerous Hollywood actors, including Bing Crosby and Carole Lombard, who was to have had dinner with Columbo the evening of the accident and who was romantically involved with him.
Columbo's mother was hospitalized in serious condition from a heart attack at the time of the accident; the news was withheld from her by his brothers and sisters for the remaining 10 years of her life. Owing to her previous heart condition, it was feared that the news would prove fatal to her (she died in 1944). They used all manner of subterfuge to give the impression that Columbo was still alive, including faked letters from him and records used to simulate his radio program.
In 1958, singer Jerry Vale recorded a tribute album titled I Remember Russ. In 1995, 61 years after Columbo's death, singer Tiny Tim released an album, titled Prisoner of Love (A Tribute to Russ Columbo), which he recorded with the group Clang. Columbo is one of the historical figures named in the Neil Diamond composition "Done Too Soon". Columbo is one of the three famous crooners named in the 1932 Looney Tunes cartoon Crosby, Columbo, and Vallee. (Wikipedia)

"Although he secured roles in "Outside Providence" and "Ride with the Devil," his role in the 2002 Bruce Willis film "Hart's War" was virtually trimmed out of existence in the film's final cut, and his 2003 pilot "111 Gramercy Park" failed to be picked up.
