When is the musical coming out?

by Anonymousreply 1October 30, 2023 11:25 PM

I saw Lady Bird on a re-run of the Dick Cavett show and was blown away by her intelligence, dignity, and beauty. My favorite first lady.

by Anonymousreply 2October 30, 2023 11:25 PM

She had the honour of being portrayed by Patti LuPone.

But why?

by Anonymousreply 6October 31, 2023 1:28 PM

I just finished watching it. What a terrific documentary. It was fascinating seeing all these very famous, and some less famous, moments of the 60s from a different perspective. Some were new for me. I didn’t know about the Walter Jenkins scandal, for example, or Eartha Kitty’s interaction with Lady Bird.

by Anonymousreply 7November 14, 2023 3:50 PM

Kitt, not Kitty, of course.

by Anonymousreply 8November 14, 2023 3:51 PM

I do wonder what it will have to say about the Eartha Kitt incident.

by Anonymousreply 9November 14, 2023 3:55 PM

Plant a tree, a bush or a shrub.

by Anonymousreply 10November 14, 2023 4:01 PM

I watched it, it was great. Lady Bird’s memoir was also based on these tapes.

I found her willingness to support and comfort Walter Jenkins and his family after his arrest interesting-everyone, including her husband, told her not to contact them but she did anyway.

The Kennedys come across poorly.

Did they include the part where she found Mamie Eisenhower's stash of 12-inch black dildos?

Lady Bird is a legend here in Austin and this is just one part of her legacy:

She was worth 100 of Jackie onassistance.

I have heard that story about Jackie being a bitch to Lady Bird at RFK’s funeral before, but it is still compelling.

What did the Kennedys want from LBJ? Did they want him to not run in 1964 so RFK could run instead? What was he supposed to do in their opinion?

I never understood why he was so resented by Bobby and Jackie in particular. He got JFK’s legislation passed; he went out of his way to honor him, like changing the name of Cape Canaveral; and he let Jackie stay on in the White House for a few weeks after JFK died. Did they think he was sullying the image of Camelot?

June 16, 1966

Dear Diary,

During renovations of a small bathroom on Third Floor, one of the carpenters found a manila envelope wedged behind the cabinet beneath the sink. Liz (Carpenter) brought it to me immediately after she opened it. Inside were three photographs of Mamie Eisenhower, wearing a black teddy with garters and stockings. But no panties. Her carpet not only matches the drapes, but it has the same little bangs across the top. No wonder Ike drank.

Dear Diary,

Tonight, I have "the talk" with Lynda Bird.

by Anonymousreply 20November 14, 2023 10:20 PM

Lynda Bird must be a moron, she was 23 and married to Charles Robb in 1967, after fooling around with George Hamilton the year prior.

by Anonymousreply 21November 14, 2023 10:30 PM

These monthly accounts of the Johnson presidency are a great resource. I believe June 1966 is the first of the series, which continued until January 1969, the end of his presidency.

I'm guessing that Jackie didn't want to play the role of gracious lady at a funeral. She was close to Bobby and Bobby and LBJ had a very difficult relationship (which doesn't really come across in this special). I feel bad for Lady Bird, but she knew things were complicated.

by Anonymousreply 23November 15, 2023 12:23 AM

R23, the strained relationship between RFK and LBJ is made pretty apparent in this documentary.

Hamilton was into anal. No condom. No babies.

Jacqueline Kennedy went through a lot, of course, but nearly every story I hear of her makes her seem like a thoroughly dislikable person. She seemed to look down on everyone

by Anonymousreply 27November 18, 2023 1:56 AM

R27, and so do Dataloungers!

I want to know everything about Jumbo

by Anonymousreply 30November 18, 2023 2:17 AM

Like Clinton and Roosevelt he seems to have married a woman he found intellectually suitable with the expectation he would seek sexual excitement with other women.

by Anonymousreply 31November 18, 2023 2:29 AM

R27: Jackie, like many people, had many sides to her. She was well-liked at Viking. She was smart with the Kennedys--making alliances with Joe, avoiding touch football and those "toothy" Kennedy girls. She was a snob when she was young. She seemed to get along with Lady Bird in her later years.

by Anonymousreply 32November 18, 2023 2:30 AM

R31: Better than being like Eisenhower, marrying a frump and seeking pleasure with his driver.

by Anonymousreply 33November 18, 2023 2:34 AM

Still waiting for the Jumbo info

^^^sorry Forrest Tucker (weird autocorrect) you’d think the auto correct could surmise that Forrest tucked it in his sock

by Anonymousreply 36November 18, 2023 4:32 AM

The Kennedys were snobs who treated the Johnsons like dirt. LBJ sized them up correctly and rightly loathed them. Johnson, meanwhike, was a visionary who got business done. Lady Bird graduated from high school at age 15 and went on to get a first-class education. Much smarter than professional whore Jackie on Assistance.

Between the Johnsons and Ann Richards, Texas has produced some of the coolest Dems around.
