I’m surprised he had such a neat, tidy and quiet death. He was such a mess I thought he’d be found in a grimy hotel room closet overseas, or after having been missing for a month, with cats eating him.
He seemed rather far gone. But that’s just a general impression from a casual onlooker.

Beloved 'Friends' star Matthew Perry, who died from an apparent drowning on Saturday, October 28, once revealed that he was given an ileostomy bag, which is a pouch used to collect waste from an ileostomy opening, after a failed surgical attempt at removing his colostomy bag.

The NY post is a worthless rag. Of course, his parents are going to be "extremely distraught"!!! They're old as fuck and were hoping against hope he could hold on a few more years so he would not predecease them. God only knows what kind of mess of estate planning he might have. Who will pay their mortgages, health care costs and buy them new Range Rovers in 2024?! Won't someone -- anyone! -- consider the abject grief of the old rich parents of a lifelong drug addict?!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 29, 2023 7:49 PM |
I'm sure Matthew's parents (who likely are doing fine already financially) will be the main heirs of Perry's estate since he was unmarried and had no children.

What if he left his fortune to charity, or a rehab center, or a drug dealer, or a manufacturer of jacuzzi tubs? No guarantee his parents get anything, perhaps purposefully. I mean, would he have had such a difficult life if his parents had been less self-absorbed and a little more attentive?

The house pics at Zillow are interesting. Even considering the pics are staged/pre-Perry, there is a cold, sterile quality to the interiors that could feel very isolating. Give me a condo in a city with all the background hustle and bustle, cars, horns, dogs barking…an unquiet brain doesn’t like isolation.
I wonder if his sober coach/ assistant lived there too? These deaths often seem to take place during a (rare) window when the celeb is alone. From the pics, it looks like he left in a corner’s van so even if the official statement is that he was found “unresponsive,” he must have been obviously too far gone for an ambulance. The pics of his family are so sad. He was loved.

As I posted in the other Part II Perry thread, did he have a Batman fetish? It would explain the weird flashing red Batman logo on either his pool cover, or at the bottom of his pool. This is clearly visible in the drone footage from last night, taken by the tabloids over his house while the LAPD was at the house investigating things.
I think I saw this in one of the clips at the Mail, on one of their many articles. I thought it was strange.

The Medical Examiner's website indicates that the body is ready for release, meaning the autopsy has been completed. The case is still listed as open, and the cause of death has been deferred, meaning that further testing is necessary...most likely toxicology results.

It's kind of poignant that he was playing pickleball hours before he died, given that he was a junior tennis champion.
There were a few hints in the earliest Friends episodes about Chandler's sexuality. There was an episode with a whole subplot about him wondering why so many people who meet him assume he's gay. In the pilot, he dreamed he was Liza Minnelli. I'm sure there were hints more that I can't remember off the top of my head. Given that David Crane, one of the show's creators, was gay, I wonder if that was the road they were originally planning to go down with Chandler. However, I suppose that would have been too controversial for the main character of such a mainstream show in the 90s.

There's nothing glamorous about dying at the age of 54 R67, specially when he could've easily made it to 90 with his kind of wealth.
Specially when he could have avoided his health issues by learning to control his booze habit and by saying no to illicit drugs.
Whoever was the first person to offer him drugs in the 1980s more than 35 years is certainly not going to take any responsibility for his life being cut short. But in a way they are, they certainly are when they told and convinced young Matthew that doing drugs was fine and a regular part of life.

If he died intestate -- which is very unlikely since he spent 5 months in a coma clinging to life some years ago -- his parents are the sole heirs to his RESIDUARY estate. Which means his estate must be probated and every creditor, taxing authority, aggrieved party, agent, manager, business partner, Tom, Dick, Harry and Jane gets to make a claim to his estate. It will be tied up in probate for years. His parents won't live long enough to settle his estate.

From show creators Kauffman, Crane, and Bright:
[quote]“We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew’s passing. It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives,” said “Friends” co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane and executive producer Kevin Bright in a joint statement. “He was a brilliant talent. It’s a cliche to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words. From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us. We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment – not just to his work, but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart.” The “Friends” co-creators and EP concluded their statement by saying, “We send all of our love to his family and friends. This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.”

Oh God, no....
That train left the station 30 years ago. His body was RAVAGED. His liver, his kidneys, his GI tract and cardiovascular system were seriously compromised. His physical health was probably comparable to a 90 year old's. In addition to fighting to maintain his sobriety every single day, he had to manage chronic debilitating health conditions that were more than just unpleasant. He was at death's door. He played pickleball of Saturday, sat in his Jacuzzi tub and figured his life would never be better than it was at that very moment -- it could only get harder with each day. He'd had enough...

Everyone's having trouble getting ready for Chandler's funeral! Monica is having an allergic reaction to Joey's grandmother's cannoli, Ross and Rachel are fighting over whether it's "bandana" or "bandanna," and Phoebe's new cellphone number is one digit away from that of the free clinic.

His pickleball coach comments:
Matt Manasse, 35, teaches pickleball at the Riviera Country Club, a private members club in Pacific Palisades close to Matthew Perry's home.
Perry's coach Matt Manasse, 35, said he played pickleball five times a week, and found the sport helped keep him sober.
'He thought it was something that could help with his recovery and he was doing an awesome job,' said Manasse, speaking to People.
'He loved it. He came out five times a week, would always talk about it. [He] got so much better, always made everyone laugh. He was competitive, just a genuine, good guy — caring for everybody.'
Manasse, who has taught Emma Watson, Matthew McConaughey and Wyclef Jean, said Perry was 'doing really well.'
He wasn't at the club on Saturday morning, and last spoke to the actor a week ago.
The coach considered Perry a friend, and the Friends actor invited him to his home to watch the Super Bowl. Perry was supportive of Manasse's efforts to spread the sport's popularity.
Perry told him, Manasse said, 'Whatever you need. Anything you need, I'm there for you.'
'When I first started playing pickleball [with him] it was just Matthew and [me]. And then we'd bring in other people,' said Manasse.
'Pickleball was his outlet. He really looked forward to it. He was a competitive guy, not in a bad way at all. He loved it. He wanted to come out. He wanted to win. He loved it. When he hit an unbelievable shot, he would tell you about it for days.'
by Anonymous | reply 128 | October 30, 2023 8:30 AM |
Manasse said the game was therapeutic for Perry and he used it as an outlet to maintain his sobreity.
'He had so much that he was doing with his rehab facility and trying to get people clean,' said Manasse.
'He would bring them to teach them pickleball. He was just always trying to help people.'
'That was just the kind of guy he was.
'We went to dinner together. I was over at his place for the Super Bowl. He cared about other people. He was a really good person.'
Manasse said Perry was 'selfless', and always looking out for others.
'He cared about everyone — your day was better when you saw him or when he called,' he said.
'He never missed an opportunity for a funny joke to make you laugh. Just a genuinely amazing person. Everyone should know he had a heart of gold.'

Who R81, you are a total drug user AIRHEAD.
No sane person thinks that dying AT 54 from substance abuse is a dignified thing that's worth going through. Shake your head, hon, get rid of the companion of other substance abusers, because they clearly haven't made you any smarter or more realistic.
"I don't presume everybody wants to, or has the capacity to, live to their 90s."
I never said everybody will get to live until they are 90, I said a rich guy like Perry could HAVE PROBABLY lived until 90 if it wasn't for DESTRUCTIVE AND THOUGHTLESS actions, and yes, wake up, the AVERAGE person out there, not 100 out of 100, but some 85 out of 100 would MUCH RATHER have the chance of living until 90, than wasting DECADES OF POSSIBILITIES and REALIZATIONS, meeting new people, picking up new hobbies just for the chance of burning decades to come by chosing the frivolous and meaningless self-gratification brought on by drugs.
Have you ever dared to wonder why many former addicts actually stopped, even though they liked the pleasure of drugs?
And say what you want, but people normalizing drugs and being drugged are the ones who ended putting Perry in his coffin, if he had had other friends and had made different choices, perhaps his life wouldn't have ended so soon, now we will never know.

"That train left the station 30 years ago. His body was RAVAGED. His liver, his kidneys, his GI tract and cardiovascular system were seriously compromised."
Yes hon, his body was compromised thanks to DECADES OF multiple substance abuse, he would have PROBABLY made it to 90, IF, he had never done drugs, or if he had actually stopped and never gotten drugged again after the age of 25, but SADLY that's not what happened.
He was not able to control his eternal search for cheap thrills, drugs completely dominated his poor brain, he was willing to die for his behavioral compulsion.
But there was once, a time and a date on the calendar, when he was just another innocent boy, when he didn't have this compulsion and theses habits, there was once a time and a space where his brain 🧠 was healthier and didn't have the "need" for these things.
And this is what I am "whining" about, not the fact that he was drugged in 2019, not the fact that he was druggie back in 2010, not the fact that he was junkie in 1998, or that he was snorting lines of coke back in 1993.
I am FEELING SAD that one day back in the 1980s a VERY young Matthew made the decision of 'trying' drugs, and that this decision would end up costing him so much and possibly cutting his life short. Things could have been different, if he had made a different choice, if he had had different friends, if he hadn't cared about being popular, if he hadn't caree about certain useless types of "pleasure".
by Anonymous | reply 145 | October 30, 2023 1:25 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 146 | October 30, 2023 1:55 PM |
r145 you pre-suppose a bit too much. There may never have been "a day" in his life "when he didn't have this compulsion and theses habits, there was once a time and a space where his brain 🧠 was healthier and didn't have the "need" for these things."
That's often WHY people end up suffering from addiction: because they NEVER feel normal, they're always trying to search for something to make them feel better, to fill the void.
That's why addiction exists beyond just pleasure-seeking. If all people could just feel good based on the simple pleasures of life, and we could all just "skip to my lou, my darling" through life, drugs wouldn't be a thing.
But, alas, that's just not how many people are made. Some people are born with some faulty wiring/genetics. Presumably, this man was born into a pretty damn good life: his parents loved him, he didn't suffer from poverty or abuses (that we know of). He was somewhat privileged. He seemed to have all the components that should make for a happy, healthy, successful life.
But now I'm pre-supposing that everything was in place for him to flourish, and there's just no way for anyone to really know but him. No one was inside his brain but him, and clearly there was some unmet need, some gap, something that wasn't there for him, despite all that he had, was given, and worked hard for.
And that is the devastation that is addiction. It's a shitty stroke of genetics that is waiting to pop up and grow 15 Medusa heads given the smallest opportunity. It can strike ANYONE, no matter what the circumstances.
I hope he's at peace now.

by Anonymous | reply 149 | October 30, 2023 2:27 PM |
Nope R147, no one is born an addict.
Cocaine, heroin, meth,MDMA.... don't magically transfer themselves into the bloodstream of the addict, the actions of the drug abuser are CRUCIAL to the development of the addiction, it's never spontaneous.
And yes, there was a time and a day when Perry didn't need drugs, or do you think he was already a junkie as a ten year old boy, the more he normalized and tried drugs, the more he repeated these behavior the more of an addict he became. His choices could have been made differently, but sadly he didn't positive encouragement at a young age to reject toxic friendships and drugs.
Oh, and life isn't made of endless joy and happiness, mostly life is just boring, and all of us may experiment feelings of being 'misfit'; hell, that happens to ALL OF US LGBTQ growing up in this horribly heterocentric society.
It doesn't mean that we all do drugs, or that booze and drugs are the solution to anything, usually they only make matters worse and create unnecessary drama in people's lives, including the ones surrounding the addict.
I will always be a fan and adore Matthew, that's why I wish he had seen things differently and made different choices.

It's chemistry as much as it is psychology. Hard core addicts, like Matthew, very likely have some kind of chemical imbalance or WTF ever, and if certain substances are introduced into their system they can become highly addictive. So it's not always a question of willpower and choices. It's not always a sign of weakness as some people interpret it. Addiction is a sickness. When you're a young teenager, you aren't thinking about that stuff, you just want to drink, or smoke pot, or pop pills, or whatever's the "in" thing to do. But an addict cannot stop. They need help. It took decades before people finally understood Alcoholism is a disease. Addiction is really hard. It's a struggle. As I read about him, it seems like Matthew also had a whole constellation of medical problems requiring medication, a finding a balance and getting him the right medications was probably a constant juggling act.

R142, with every word you make less sense. Probably less than 5% of the population could even potentially live to be 90+. No one was begrudging Perry long life, only acknowledging that it was not a possibility. Whatever circumstances conspired to create his susceptibility to a drug and alcohol dependency when he was just a kid would have certainly precluded long life, no matter what personal or professional path he pursued in life.
Whenever people of advanced age are interviewed and asked how they did it, they consistently say it's because they never entertained feelings of sadness, worry, fear or anger. People with clinical depression, anxiety, trauma, personality disorders or a predisposition toward addiction will not live to 90.
Matthew Perry was NEVER a candidate to live to 90, notwithstanding his millions, and that was determined very, very early in his life.

[quote] Nope [R147], no one is born an addict.
Absolutely false on every level. Children born to drug addicted mothers can be born with a physiological addiction. As well, we know many addicts are self-medicating to counter chemical imbalances in their brains, often simply a matter of biology. People can be born with biological, chemical conditions that will make substance addiction inevitable, it is a disease like diabetes -- you can be born with it OR you can develop it due to lifestyle choices.

Hot tub = death
The warm water diverts circulation from your core, causing your blood pressure to drop and your heart rate to speed up to compensate. With this guy's considerable pre existing risk factors (who the fuck smokes 60 cigarettes a DAY??!) he almost certainly had cardiopulmonary disease, along with all the other issues. When the pump fails (heart) you got nothing. News reports are already mentioning COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) as well.
Saunas are just as bad - why do you think they have warning signs posted at hotels and health clubs advising people over 50 to stay in for like two minutes or avoid their use at all? With all the abuse this guy's body suffered, he should not have been anywhere near a hot tub.

Tell us more. I honestly have never heard this before. I've never noticed those signs at the gym or at hotels because I am just...umm...39.
At the gym, ONLY fat, old people on the edge of death are in the sauna AND the jacuzzi. I always assumed a healthcare professional had advised them to use either or both at every opportunity for therapeutic reasons. Hearing now that it could be dangerous for them makes me want to file a formal complaint with the gym requesting that they ban all old, fat people from the sauna and the jacuzzi.

This is the conundrum: people who want to be famous think it will finally make them feel good about themselves, because they have no inherent sense of worth. But that prompts them to seek out the very professions that expose them the most to public ridicule.

Matthew Perry’s “Friends” co-stars have spoken out following his death at 54. The late star died of an apparent drowning Saturday at his California home.
Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer released a joint statement Monday.
“We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family,” “There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.”
“In time we will say more, as and when we are able,” the statement continued. “For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.”

He lost a truckload of weight between seasons six and seven (which was awkward, given that the S6 finale and S7 opening episode were set on the same night. Like the time Buffy mysteriously got a new hairstyle when she was resurrected in season six of BtVS).

The Friends released their statement to People magazine. What seemed to be overlooked - or at least I missed it - was the Perry parents also released a statement to People.
"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother," Perry's family said Sunday in a statement to People. "Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love."

Whoopsie makes it all about her.
Whoopi Goldberg took a second to compose herself as she seemingly fought back tears on The View while leading a heartbreaking tribute to Matthew Perry.
Discussing his passing, Whoopi, 67, said she was 'beyond heartbroken' at the news as she honored the late actor's wish to be 'remembered for helping people'.
Addressing viewers on Monday's show, she began, 'you know, we were all beyond heartbroken,' before taking a noticeable pause in which she appeared to regain her composure before adding, 'to hear about the sudden passing of Matthew Perry'.
Whoopi continued: 'He was just 54 years old and we were very lucky to have him here last year when he was really open about overcoming his struggles with addiction, and he was really passionate about helping other people get through it.'

Who cares what gives a 50+ year old fun and pleasure in life (as long as it's not hurting anyone else)? I think people's weird obsessions about Civil War Re-enactment or wild mushroom hunting make people interesting in an otherwise 9-5, boring-ass life.
Finding something to obsess over besides drugs was probably a healthy coping habit. After stopping drinking last year, i became obsessed with fitness, cooking, hiking, gardening, cleaning, etc. Anything to replace sitting around and being in the doldrums and drunk.

[quote]What is R207 trying to say? They type medicated.
R199 seems to know Matthew Perry's motivations better than Matthew knew himself. I'm saying performance anxiety MAY have been one of the reasons why Perry started with drugs.
In interviews, more than one actor has mentioned performance anxiety during the filming of a movie. They're worried the director might decide that the actor doesn't have the acting chops to deliver the performance they want and they'll get fired and replaced. Why would TV actors be any different? Once "Friends" started becoming successful and getting publicity, Perry might have felt the pressure to "deliver the goods".
Perry started using drugs in the early seasons of "Friends". He had no idea that the show would go on for ten seasons and that he would be kept on for all that time and that he would be making a million dollars per episode for the last two seasons. I'll bet when Perry was using a lot, he was worried that producers and executives might decide that he was more trouble than he was worth and he would be fired and replaced.
Once Perry had made all that money from "Friends", of course he was less anxious about other projects. If a series like "The Odd Couple" failed, it wasn't the end of the world. He still had plenty of money to live on.

From wikipedia:
[quote]Two years later, while attending rehab in Switzerland, Perry faked pain to get a prescription for 1,800 milligrams of Oxycontin per day and was having daily ketamine infusions. He was given propofol in conjunction with a surgery, which stopped his heart for five minutes. The resulting cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) resulted in eight broken ribs. He paid $175,000 for a private jet to take him to Los Angeles to get more drugs. When doctors there refused, Perry spent another $175,000 to take a private jet back to Switzerland. In 2022, he estimated that $9 million was spent on his addiction, including 14 stomach surgeries, 15 stays in rehab, and therapy twice a week for 30 years. Perry also asserted that he had attended approximately 6,000 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

Matthew Perry had quite a few half-siblings that he seemed fond of, although they are younger. As his parents are both still alive, I don’t think there will be much drama around settling his estate. Considering how much he spoke about wanting to be remembered for helping people in recovery, I expect a lot of his money will go in support of addiction support services.

Bullshit. The guy was a massive drug addict. There’s no way propofol given in surgery by an anesthetist put him into cardiac arrest, lol.
Anyone who’s had a colonoscopy in a doctor’s office has had propofol. I hate the way drug addicts lie to everyone when there are so many of us out there who know medications and their actions. “Oh I got addicted when I had a sports injury and the doctor gave me narcotics. The doctors were too quick to give me opioids.”

In California, a coroner's report is a public record. The family could go to court and ask a Judge to issue an order sealing it but at the moment -- after my evening cocktail(s) -- I can't think of a reason a court would grant that order. Generally, the coroner's report is discreet and avoids sordid details unrelated to cause of death.

Her message is somewhat reserved and measured following the 'shocking' discovery of her best friend's corpse, who is alleged to have experienced a sudden, unexpected death.
About 4 or 5 mg of Xanax could have stopped the respiration of a middle-aged man with COPD. Coroner will not find enough water in airways or lungs to deem drowning a cause of death -- unless he is paid off by the family.

r327 that is a statement from his FORMER assistant and sober companion, not his current assistant. There's no way that assistant would release a statement at this point when even the homicide unit is still investigating his death.
I read both his former assistant/sober companion's statement as well as another report last night that the homicide unit is investigating because of his celebrity status (it's apparently rather par for the course in these cases).
No, i can't recall where i read both of these reports, but they were linked through one of the many threads on this board.

Yes...that is why there is concern over its eventual content. The insurer can deny to pay a benefit based on some causes of death -- i.e. suicide, death occasioned by the insured's reckless behavior, etc.

I am somewhat familiar with how death works. For instance, a dead person does not have a "current" assistant. A dead person would only have a "former" assistant.
I could be mistaken because I am only extraordinarily beautiful, glamorous and smart -- not perfect -- but I believe the author of that statement @r327 was Perry's assistant at the time of his death.

In another thread, a poster said that he was living in the house during renovations. THAT was really surprising. One of the perqs of being rich should be that you can live elsewhere during renovations.

Athenna Crosby, a model and entertainment reporter posted a tribute to Matthew and confirmed that she was the woman in the viral picture.
She wrote: "I am so devastated from his death but felt it was in poor taste to talk about it publicly as the attention should not be on me but rather on him and his legacy and he was an extremely private person and I always respected that in our friendship."

The Hollywood Reporter makes the claim that it's like when a Beatle died. I think I am okay with the analogy.
Actually the quote came from Warren Littlefield, the former NBC honcho who greenlit Friends.
At its height, Littlefield recalls, Friends would get as many as 50 million people watching an episode live on Thursday nights, with north of 75 million tuning in to NBC's "Must-See TV" lineup - roughly a third of the country. "You didn't want to go to work the next day and be at the watercooler or coffeemaker if you weren't ready to participate in the collective experience and recount it the next day. That will never be found again," Littlefield tells THR. "Teenagers today have no idea this existed on a network called NBC. Multiple generations have come to discover the show and claim that it's theirs, an indication that Friends uniquely stands the test of time. There aren't many TV shows that can accomplish that."
by Anonymous | reply 415 | November 2, 2023 6:50 AM |
That's probably true, and yet its appeal and charm always eluded me. I watched an occasional episode, and it was usually "meh". Of all the characters Lisa Kudrow was the only consistently funny one, and the directors made her almost a caricature. Most of the other women were vapid and whiny, and of the men, the least funny to me was Matthew Perry. Still, I feel bad for his spiral into alcoholism and ultimately into death.
Maybe I'm wrong but I always felt it was not a show meant to appeal on any level to gay men.

I think not, menluvinguy. I'm 100 % gay and I loved it, at least in the early seasons. Then it went on too long and the scripts declined in quality.
I read a story about a guy (in the U.K., I think) who poked fun at his son for being obsessed with the show in its initial run. He didn't see the appeal. Then the dad watched the show in reruns and became absolutely hooked.

The women have all stayed painfully thin, which can't be easy at their ages. At some point it becomes silly, because no matter how thin you are in your sixties and above, you will not be lusted after. It's simple biology - there's no need for old people to look hot because they can't healthily procreate (old sperm can sometimes result in a child, but typically ones with problems).
I think Candice Bergen has the right idea - go ahead and enjoy dessert as long as you don't become downright obese. Plump old people are perfectly fine.

R434 When actors reach superstardom, it's less about the money and more about not wanting to give up the fame and all that goes along with it, so they do what they need to do to remain in the spotlight.
I remember seeing some show with Rosie O'Donnell and Gloria Estefan, and they were both talking about the double-edged sword of fame. The downside is that you lose your anonymity and privacy, but the upside is that you get all the spoils - luxury hotels, private jets, invitations to lavish events, being catered to 24/7. Both of them said that's very difficult to give up once you've had a taste of it.

Friends became a show about uteruses.
Is Rachel pregnant? Who’s the father?
Is Phoebe pregnant, carrying triplets?
Is Monica pregnant? Will she ever become pregnant?
Turning Phoebe into a breed cow with a rented uterus was the absolute limit

Chandler Bing’s snark and sarcasm was very much of its time, the 1990s. It was the television family hour version of the mocking, ridiculing, put down humor of Howard Stern and Rush Limbaugh who each came to national prominence in the same decade.

[Quote] The Hollywood Reporter makes the claim that it's like when a Beatle died. I think I am okay with the analogy.
Pure hyperbole. There's no comparison between the impact and popularity of the Beatles and Friends. The Beatles a cultural phenomenon and cultural revolution. Their music was everywhere for decades and their appearances caused pandemonium. See Robert Zemeckis' I Wanna Hold Your Hand which deals with the phenomena of Beatlemania. Their songs were covered by so many artists and their success was cross generational. At the height of Beatlemania their popularity extended to film: A Hard Day's NIght, Help! and Yellow Submarine. Even in the 70s when they disbanded George, Paul, John and Ringo had successful solo careers.
by Anonymous | reply 443 | November 2, 2023 6:04 PM |
Plus, young people don’t know what muzak was. It was everywhere. Restaurants, doctors offices, stores, elevators. It wasn’t radio music or streaming music. They were tapes and they were purely instrumental. At one point about 70% of muzak was Beatles music.
I kind of miss muzak. You couldn’t sing along. If you were in the mood you might hum along. But it kept things sedate. As long as the muzak was playing, all was right with the environment you were in. It was an attempt to calm the masses and it kind of worked. The1960s were the height of research for sociologists/psychologists. Department stores hired researchers to make shopping a more pleasurable experience so people would stay in stores longer and buy more things. Wide aisles, lots of ambient lighting, salespeople folding clothing in the aisles and asking, “Do you need anything?” And muzak to fill the air with sedate instrumental versions of I Want to Hold Your Hand.”

I didn't watch Friends but seem to recall hearing a story at the time about the reason why Chandler and Monica became a couple -- supposedly it only happened because the show's producers and NBC had become vexxed that some viewers were saying Chandler and Joey acted so much like a gay couple that the writers should actually let their characters fall in love and get together. They instead had Chandler fall for Monica, which helped to get him away from Joey and into the arms of a woman, thus putting an end to such talk (plus the fans loved Chandler and Monica as a couple, so it all paid off).

You can walk down all the blocks the LES and spot maybe 2 or 3 older buildings on each that have either architectural significance or having a striking facade. I have a friend who lives one block east and that building was probably the standout on that block. The residents resent that they tore down a charming old 3-story building that was earmarked for landmark status and replaced it with a upscale modern 6 story building that could have went up almost anywhere.

I just read Matthew's book on Scribd.com. He sure had kind of a grim childhood and adulthood. He wrote that when he had colic as a baby, a doctor prescribed phenobarbital which was given to him for 30 days. He speculates that his addiction was activated at a very early age... He also said that he would trade his fame and millionaire lifestyle to switch places with a broke friend with diabetes who lived in a rent controlled apartment, to not have to deal with his addiction...

He said that from the start, he liked the way Vicodin made him feel and he wanted to get more.

Friends has a strict, effective narrative structure. Every episode has 3 stories: the main, the side, and the anecdotal. Every episode has 3 acts for each story. Introduction, development, conclusion-denouement. Once you become a fan, this structure is like crack - very comforting and fulfilling. I was a snob about that series when it was on but came to respect and like it years later when I was teaching students from all over the world, in Switzerland. So many young people (of all intellects) really enjoyed that series and its entrée to English language and American culture.

Suzanne wore a red floral dress while everyone else wore black.

Thank you, R)560.

It was a *sleeveless* floral dress. Who is the woman at the very end behind the coffin? Short shorts and black pantyhose? 😒
by Anonymous | reply 566 | November 5, 2023 2:19 AM |
Suzanne Perry. Kind of an odd choice for a funeral but I guess it's not that bad. I'm sure there all kinds of fashions disasters at funerals, eg women with low cut dresses, etc.

Matthew's mom must think her arms look great.
by Anonymous | reply 568 | November 5, 2023 3:04 AM |
I’m starting to suspect that Mom was probably the root of most of Matty’s problems.
by Anonymous | reply 569 | November 5, 2023 3:05 AM |
Hahaha. Nah, she's just a fashion rebel.
by Anonymous | reply 570 | November 5, 2023 3:08 AM |
No, not a fashion rebel. Just Canadian fashion sense.

Did they make sure he was actually dead before burying him?

From TMZ article linked above:
[QUOTE]One video, in particular, shows the three ladies heading into a church ... presumably where a service was held. No clear sign of DS and MLB, but ya gotta imagine they were on hand.
So the reports that all five cast mates attended are assumption?

What was the last concert tour Matt attended?
Drowned World by Madonna

Surely Schwimmer and LeBlanc would have attended Perry's funeral unless they got seriously ill on that day. I'm sure they were there.

R569 Perry is kind of an interesting addiction case, he seems to be one of the rare examples whose parents live seemingly stable lives into old age. He may have had a grandparent with the alcoholic gene. Frequency, addiction seems to skip a generation. Their children so traumatized by having an alcoholic parent, they don’t touch the stuff. A grandchild doesn’t have the same bad memories but does have the gene, so they are vulnerable.

Nothing to do now but wait for the toxicology to come back. I would have bet the rent money it was fentanyl, but I was wrong.
by Anonymous | reply 596 | November 5, 2023 11:13 PM |
Don't they have to do toxicology, too, to determine whether he experienced heart failure or a heart attack? Or is it enough to inspect the organ for damage? Or would the heart necessarily show signs of failure, as opposed to an attack.
I'm going with his ticker giving out. Surely, after all those years his heart had to be substantially weakened. I've read cases of people reporting unusual tiredness leading up to a coronary event. (Most recently this happened Grant Wohl, the journalist who died at the World Cup and Beverly Leslie. The latter had actually made a doctor's appt for it.) A tiring round of pickleball and a contraindicated soak in the jacuzzi.
Do we need Part III?
by Anonymous | reply 597 | November 5, 2023 11:32 PM |
R597.he “did a lot of living” so I suspect is was a heart attack.
by Anonymous | reply 598 | November 5, 2023 11:35 PM |
The strange Instagram posts over his final few weeks suggest to me he had recently relapsed.
by Anonymous | reply 599 | November 5, 2023 11:36 PM |
Yes, someone please create a Part 3 (and hopefully there will only be 1)
