Sheridan Bucket - Keeping Up Appearances

What if we never see Sheridan because he doesn’t really exist. He either died at an early age or Hyacinth has created a fantasy where she has a son. Perhaps the reason she cares so much about keeping up appearances is she’s trying to fill a void in her life.

And maybe that’s why everyone around her let’s her get away with it as they know she’s very psychologically fragile.

by Anonymousreply 35October 30, 2023 10:42 PM

This feels too deep for a light-hearted comedy show.

Most of the comedy surrounding Sheridan stems from the fact that Hyacinth is blissfully unaware of his obvious homosexuality and the fact he clearly abuses his parents' generous nature while being an absent son.

If he didn't exist, who's on the other end of the line when she's speaking to him on the phone? And if he was a fantasy, I think she'd have made him some high flyer with a respectable job, wife and children.

by Anonymousreply 1October 27, 2023 1:55 PM

Na he exists otherwise Richard wouldn't be so pissed at sending do many cheques to him.

Maybe there's another reason Hyacinth is how she is though? Perhaps she was in an abusive relationship before she met Richard, and she's still over-compensating for the residual feelings of low self-worth? Comfort eating could explain why she's so 'well built'?

Great link. OP, you moron.

by Anonymousreply 3October 27, 2023 2:07 PM

Not every thread needs a link for discussion, R3.

by Anonymousreply 4October 27, 2023 2:20 PM

R3 it's OP's original thoughts

by Anonymousreply 5October 27, 2023 2:50 PM

Thoughts?

by Anonymousreply 6October 27, 2023 2:54 PM

Sheridan hates Hyacinth. Everybody does.

by Anonymousreply 7October 27, 2023 2:58 PM

Sherry used to play “Hide the White Slimline Telephone” so frequently that he eventually just moved to Berlin.

by Anonymousreply 8October 27, 2023 3:01 PM

So it’s like a Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf situation? She invented Sheridan as an escape from the sewer of her marriage to Richard? As something to uphold, above the mire of their vile, crushing marriage?

I guess that would lend a broader context to her keeping up of appearances. Sort of mind-blowing to stop and realize the depth and multitudes that the writers imbued into character of Hyacinth.

by Anonymousreply 9October 27, 2023 3:21 PM

Sheridan exists. So does his biracial lover, Tarquin.

Sheridan was adopted

by Anonymousreply 11October 27, 2023 4:20 PM

Who’s Afraid of Hyacinth Bucket?

by Anonymousreply 12October 27, 2023 4:43 PM

I think she might have PTSD and possibly amnesia from when Onslow forced himself on her upstairs on Rose's bed after he'd had a few too many.

The dog in the car who leaps out to bark at her is really Hyacinth's subconscious warning her of DANGER!

by Anonymousreply 13October 27, 2023 5:33 PM

It would have been brilliant seeing Patricia Routledge and Clive Swift do an episode of KUA playing Hyacinth and Richard as Martha and George types with the Dishy Vicar and his wife in the Nick and Honey roles.

by Anonymousreply 14October 27, 2023 6:58 PM

R14 would Hyacinth have shagged the vicar? I know I would!

by Anonymousreply 15October 27, 2023 7:10 PM

Do you think Sheridan is a whore? I bet he plays "Third Reich" with all those Nordic Nazis& the dark-haired Turks.

Doing bad horrible stuff in the cell blocks? What I did when I worked in Berlin b4 the wall went BOOM& the Border Guards!!

by Anonymousreply 16October 27, 2023 7:56 PM

SHEEERRRRRRRRIIIIIDANNNNNN!!!!

by Anonymousreply 17October 27, 2023 7:58 PM

R16 were you s complete filthy slapper who said yes to anyone who asked?

by Anonymousreply 18October 27, 2023 8:12 PM

R2 I recall there being a back story for her in a series called "Young Hyacinth". It was quite poorly received, though.

by Anonymousreply 19October 27, 2023 8:54 PM

Young Hyacinth was extremely strange from what I recall. It was filmed more as a drama—completely different genre, total tonal shift.

by Anonymousreply 20October 27, 2023 8:55 PM

r10 One of Jonny Lee Miller's earliest roles

r16 Of course he is, why else do you think he's constantly having to ask for money? To pay off the rough trade, of course.

by Anonymousreply 21October 27, 2023 9:03 PM

I always picture Sheridan wearing a blazer and an ascot.

by Anonymousreply 22October 27, 2023 9:07 PM

More like a gimp mask and nipple clamps

by Anonymousreply 23October 27, 2023 9:09 PM

Trump has a son, 3 actually! OP is a MAGA troll! Nice try, Boris! Are the Ukrainian libtard troll farms paying you in vodka?

by Anonymousreply 24October 27, 2023 9:29 PM

Does Sheridan know where my Serge is??

by Anonymousreply 25October 27, 2023 9:31 PM

Was Emmet Hawksworth banging Hyacinth while Richard was at work?

Emmet could be bi.

I think OP has had too much of Dowager Lady Ursula's homemade gooseberry wine.

by Anonymousreply 27October 28, 2023 1:26 AM

Or not enough.

by Anonymousreply 28October 28, 2023 5:42 PM

I would have liked to see an Alan Partridge-Hyacinth Bucket encounter.

by Anonymousreply 29October 28, 2023 5:44 PM

^^^^ I would have liked to see an encounter with Dame Edna Everage and Hyacinth. You could've sold tickets for THAT one. 🤗

by Anonymousreply 30October 28, 2023 6:02 PM

Candlelight dinners are a lot of work and Hyacinth had no maids & chefs.

….and that picnic by the river.

by Anonymousreply 31October 28, 2023 8:19 PM

Riparian entertainment, Richard!

by Anonymousreply 32October 28, 2023 8:23 PM

R32 Heh. I remember hearing "riparian" used in a Geography lesson and all I could think about was that episode of KUA.

by Anonymousreply 33October 29, 2023 12:02 AM

To R18...That answer would be YES!!. Some of those East German border guards& Security police were stunning-looking men.

by Anonymousreply 34October 30, 2023 10:32 PM

R3, what do you expect OP to link to?

Dumb.
