by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 27, 2023 2:43 AM |
This is silly. It is not a Rachel Dolezal or Elizabeth Warren situation.
For however long, she lived the life. She believed her mother in terms of her heritage and had adoptive parents who were certifiably Native.
Identifying as Native American (or Native, or indigenous as they say in Canada) was hardly a ticket to cash and riches. She got attention because she was a good singer, and she did much good in raising awareness of Native people.
It would have been easier for her to be the white Buffy Sainte-Marie, honestly. Raquel Welch did that, hiding her Hispanic heritage until she got famous. Yet nobody came for her.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 27, 2023 2:47 AM |
This is confusing. She looks like an indigenous person. I don’t think she was pulling any scam. But since she was adopted why not do a DNA test to determine your ancestry.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 27, 2023 2:50 AM |
Per genealogy posts on Reddit, a lot of Canadian and US people who were told they were indigenous find out via DNA tests that they aren’t, or at least DNA no longer reflects it. Instead they’re part Black.
Some are floored as they grew up in these communities, some with family members receiving benefits.
Not saying Buffy isn’t what she thought or said she was, but this occurs quite often when people get their DNA results.

[quote]since she was adopted why not do a DNA test to determine your ancestry.
Because when she started out in the '60s, you couldn't just do that.
People used to form their cultural identity based on what they were told by parents, relatives, and community. They didn't have to do a blood test and show their papers to Twitter to prove they were enough percentage to identify as something.

According to the linked article - her true birth certificate HAS BEEN FOUND. With “Beverley Jean Santamaria” having been born to father Albert Santamaria and mother Winifred Irene Kenrick on February 20, 1941 — the birthdate that Buffy has accepted as her own.
I googled her mom's name and got this:
Brief Life History of Winifred Irene When Winifred Irene Kenrick was born on 27 January 1918, in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States, her father, Frank Webster Kendrick, was 44 and her mother, Elizabeth Marie Atwood, was 38. She married Albert J Santamaria on 28 January 1936. She lived in Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States for about 10 years and California, United States in 1985. She died on 28 March 2010, at the age of 92.

This "investigation" is the definition of poor news judgment.
No harm was done by Ms. Sainte-Marie.
The only harm being done is to an 82-year-old woman at the end of her life and career, who now has to worry she'll be described as "disgraced" or "questioned."
It's the worst example of modern standards (in this case, advanced DNA technology) being applied to life 60 years ago. History doesn't work that way.

[quote] had adoptive parents who were certifiably Native.
In the article it says her adoptive parents were white Americans. She makes bizarre statements like “my growing up mother” and says her “growing up mother” was not her biological mother. Then she talks about being adopted as an adult by Cree people.
Who gets adopted when they’re adults?
She says there’s no record of her having been born on a Rez but that’s ok because it wasn’t common for people on a Rez to record births. So how do you prove who you are without a birth certificate? And she says she was “given to” an American couple who happened to be visiting an area near the Piapot reservation. Really? They just gave a babies away? No birth certificate? Just, “Here’s a kid. Have fun.”

But — and not to resort to high school debate terms — where is the harm here, R28 and R30?
From the beginning of her career in the early '60s, she recorded songs that detailed the plight of Native Americans. She only agreed to appear on Sesame Street in the '70s if they would include Native American educational content, FFS.
It might be one thing if she had become the billionaire CEO of Buffy's Honest Injun Canola Oil, but this is not that.
If she took a DNA test tomorrow and it determined she wasn't technically indigenous, who exactly has been harmed all this time?

“Likewise, the family’s use of the “Sainte-Marie” name is contradicted by information that wasn’t contained in either of the biographies.
According to the 2012 biography, the Santamarias became “St. Marie” in an effort to avoid “anti-Italian prejudice” following World War II. The claim is attributed in the book to Buffy’s younger sister, the one who took the DNA test.”
by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 27, 2023 3:29 AM |
Buffy was born in a Massachusetts hospital and raised by her biological parents. They have her actual birth certificate. So she made up all the adoption stuff. Why didn’t her parents expose her story as bs?

by Anonymous | reply 48 | October 27, 2023 3:29 AM |
When the sister did a DNA test, it showed she shared DNA with Buffy's son, who also did a DNA test. However, the sister's test indicated that "almost no American Indian component in the Sainte-Marie family’s genetic makeup, undercutting the claim of being 'part Micmac' that appeared in the 2012 biography and in early news stories about the singer."
To me, "almost no American Indian component" is not that same as NO American Indian component, and, as many have suggested, family stories about ancestors were what people relied on before DNA tests. Buffy believed she had indigenous ancestors, and the "almost no American Indian component" in her biological sister's DNA test does not invalidate her belief.

Well, let's just assume she has no native ancestry. It can certainly be said she did a great job over decades on behalf of natives. I saw Buffy perform a few years ago on the Piapot reserve. The community adores her. It's very common in First Nations families to have adopted family members. It's not a legal adoption but more spiritual. She has done a lot of good for the community regardless.

by Anonymous | reply 62 | October 27, 2023 3:53 AM |
There are all kinds of possible scenarios where she has no indigenous DNA, but her parents either believed she did or told her she did.
Her mom could have have an affair or been raped. Maybe her mother or father had African heritage, but was but passing as white, so when Buffy was born darker than the rest of the family they decided they needed a cover story.
I’d be curious to see photos of the family she grew up in. If she looks a lot like them I’d be a little more suspicious of her. But I would still think this seems mean and petty.

When I was a kid my mom used to and Dad told my brother and I that we were part native on my dad's side in fact my mom used to like to joke that she had a little Indian in her when she was pregnant with me.
And my dad definitely has some sort of ethnic mix being darker skinned and my brother and I as well but I found out from a cousin later after my dad had died but our grandfather possibly altered his mom's birth certificate and intent to get tribal money.
Both my brother and I have done DNA tests through ancestry and I was very little native lineage found but again we both look like something we just don't really know what I guess. But often people when we were kids especially growing up in the Lily white community that we did would ask us what we were and we would just answer that we were part native because that's what we were told I wasn't any attempt to lie.

As soon as you see the words "My Truth..." as part of an explanation or discourse skepticism should be applied. More appropriate would be my version of the story which makes truth malleable. Perhaps she half believed her own mythology, she did no harm to indigenous people.
Those words either seek to make lies more palatable, or excuse behavior on the part of the 'truthteller". Think of Billy Porter, running around blaring his truth to any who will listen. Not lies, but self aggrandizing martyr porn whilst he flies his flag everywhere.

If Piapot First Nation wants to claim her, so be it. That’s certainly their prerogative. But there are some Indigenous people who also understand that “pretendians” take away opportunities from people who are legitimately Indigenous. So while I don’t necessarily fault her, I also wonder about her intentions and whether she used this to gain celebrity. How self-serving was she being? We’ll never know. It was an odd flex, though, for an Italian American girl to claim roots to an Indigenous group from Saskatchewan.

The Piapot reservation has some big issues in their community, I have spent plenty of time there. They hold onto Buffy and her reputation quite fiercely. She's a hero there and has always been upheld as an example of an Indigenous person finding great success out in the world. I'm not surprised that they're continuing to claim her as their own. Shame on Buffy for carrying on this lie for so long.

Universal Soldier By Buffy Sainte-Marie
He's five feet two and he's six feet four
He fights with missiles and with spears
He's all of 31 and he's only 17
He's been a soldier for a thousand years
He's a Catholic, a Hindu, an athiest, a Jain,
a Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew
and he knows he shouldn't kill
and he knows he always will
kill you for me my friend and me for you
And he's fighting for Canada,
he's fighting for France,
he's fighting for the USA,
and he's fighting for the Russians
and he's fighting for Japan,
and he thinks we'll put an end to war this way
And he's fighting for Democracy
and fighting for the Reds
He says it's for the peace of all
He's the one who must decide
who's to live and who's to die
and he never sees the writing on the walls
But without him how would Hitler have condemned him at Dachau
Without him Caesar would have stood alone
He's the one who gives his body
as a weapon to a war
and without him all this killing can't go on
He's the universal soldier and he
really is to blame
His orders come from far away no more
They come from him, and you, and me
and brothers can't you see
this is not the way we put an end to war

R153, reconciliation for Indigenous peoples is the biggest social issue in Canada and it occupies a huge amount of media bandwidth.
Buffy was probably the most globally recognizable Indigenous Canadian woman - and she is a hero to Indigenous people and very popular with the sort of granola “in this house, we believe” baby boomers that makes a huge part of the CBC’s audience. That’s she not Indigenous or Canadian is big news.
Outside of academia, the CBC has had probably one of the most public track records of unintentionally platforming Pretendians like Joseph Boyden and Michelle Latimer. It’s not surprising that the CBC feels this is something they need to run to the ground.

Buffy’s sister shared a pre-1930 letter online that is supposed to be from their great grandfather (possessed by a different family member) with one line in Louisiana saying they are not French, they are part Seminole (southern indigenous) from his dad’s side.
He wrote, “My great grandparents were full blooded”. He also says he’s English on that side and Irish on his mom’s side. He claims his wife burned all documentation and the family Bible but doesn’t say why.
If Buffy’s great grandfather is correct, then her 4th great grandparents, her great, great, great, great grandparents may have been Seminole (not Canadian).
We all have 64 great great great great grandparents. So if any DNA has been passed down on that branch it would be minuscule, like Eliz Warren. Or it could be family lore/hiding another ethnicity.

by Anonymous | reply 186 | October 28, 2023 1:38 AM |
Warren has at best 1/32 of Native DNA, but more likely closer to the bottom of the range, which is 1/1,024.
Warren was COMPLETELY disingenuous about this scandal for longer than necessary. Why? Because she USED minority membership to ADVANCE HER CAREER and she was caught out.
by Anonymous | reply 187 | October 28, 2023 1:43 AM |
i know for a fact that I have German in my background (Pennsylvania Dutch on one side, going back to the 1640s and verified by tons of genealogical records) but it doesn't show up in my DNA. Why? Because my father's mother was probably 1/8 German, but she married someone who was 100% English background, and that meant that my father was only 1/16th German, and his children are only 1/32nd German which completely washes out in the DNA record. It doesn't negate the ancestry, but it's a reminder that in not very many generations, a significant contribution from something "other" can completely diminish to the point of not appearing in a DNA record. If Warren had a great grandmother who was 1/4 Cherokee, and everyone else in her family tree was from Northern Europe, she's only going to have a tiny percentage of Indian DNA - but bein 1/4 Indian certainly mattered to her great -grandmother.........
To me, there's a big difference between someone who does have some history and family lore supporting indigenous background from someone who simply makes up a story about it (Rachel Dolezal I'm looking at you) for whatever reason. Part of me is sad that Buffy seems to be part of that group, but at least she used her songs and her popularity to promote good for the indigenous peoples.
by Anonymous | reply 188 | October 28, 2023 1:59 AM |
It’s actually impressive Elizabeth Warren’s indigenous shows.
Before DNA tests people would hear relatives say things like, “My grandmother’s parents were full-blooded Cherokee.” Always with the full-blooded.
Yet no one had any proof anyone was full blooded, yet they kept passing these stories down. Trouble is, by the time you’re 6 generations removed, that full blooded is a drop in the bucket if it shows at all.
Approximate Percentage of Their DNA That You Have Today
1 You 100%
1 2 Parents 50%
2 4 Grandparents 25%
3 8 Great-grandparents 12.5%
4 16 Great-great-grandparents 6.25%
5 32 Great-great-great-grandparents 3.12%
6 64 Great-great-great-great-grandparents 1.56%

Bullshit Justin. A fraction of heritage does not mean you put Native American on your CV and identifying papers. Harvard even proudly listed Warren as a Native American faculty member.

I just watched the CBC story (it's already on YouTube). It's even more incontrivertable than the print story. Enormously talented and charismatic performer, who's done a lot of good for Indigenous people, has lied about everything in her past. This is going to take a lot of time for people who loved her to accept.
by Anonymous | reply 225 | October 28, 2023 5:57 AM |
I just watched the full documentary, and wow. She really did invent her story out of whole cloth. She was the biological daughter of two white Italians, born and raised in Stoneham, Mass. The CBC went to the town's registrar and got the birth certificates. A niece supplied home movies and letters.
When she got famous, relatives wrote to papers saying, she's not indigenous, she's Caucasian. One letter was published; others were ignored.
In the '70s, when a PBS producer called her brother and asked, is she Caucasian, and he answered truthfully, she sicced high-powered lawyers on him and threatened to expose him as a child molester.
She was "adopted" into a Piapot family in her 20s, which does mean something in Native culture, and she's certainly done the work on behalf of Native Americans in ensuing decades, but her whole career was based on a lie that became an elaborate delusion.
The CBC did a good job on this. I questioned the news value above, but I get it now. I don't exactly buy that she took opportunities from Native female folk singers—record companies loved nothing more than to sign up clones of successful artists, and this isn't like a professor falsely claiming to be Native taking one competitive university job from true Natives. But I now understand the harm: She hurt her biological family.

The sales of all her albums put together probably didn't reach gold. So it's not like saying she was Native American did a whole lot for her. It probably held her back.

The only thing that is strange to me is that her appearance is very unlike the rest of her blond-ish, pale family. Like, very different to the point that you'd wonder if she was adopted or had another parent or parents.

There's a handwritten letter from Buffy confirming this threat. She also didn't go public with the molestation claims until after he was dead.
by Anonymous | reply 238 | October 28, 2023 6:34 AM |
R235 her brother was a commercial pilot and ran into him by chance when she was a passenger on one of his flights. She introduced him as her brother to a PBS producer she was traveling with. The producer noticed he was wasn’t dark skinned. and he got a call from the producer asking if Buffy was adopted and indigenous. The brother answered honestly and said no to both questions.
A short time later the brother got a letter from a high powered entertainment law firm claiming he was slandering her and trying to hurt her career. The firm threatened to go after him if he spoke out again. Attached with legal threat was a hand written note from Buffy telling him that if he didn’t be quiet she would tell the world he was a child molester who abused her.
His daughter, Buffy’s niece still had both letters.

by Anonymous | reply 240 | October 28, 2023 6:49 AM |
I get it now too, after feeling that Buffy probably believed she was adopted and had significant native ancestry. She provided her real birth certificate in her early 80s marriage, but, after decades of pretending she was unaware of the circumstances of her birth, she continued to lie and play the Indian masquerade for careerist reasons. As the researchers interviewed in the CBC program suggest, her shifting stories about the details of her Pretendian background are a major red flag. In the light of the overwhelming evidence going back 50 years, it's clear she couldn't remember her own fictions, and when she felt it was necessary would just make up something new at the spur of the moment and/or call her lawyers. Unfortunately, she continued this pattern of deception this week when asked about the revelations. I understand why many natives, and fans, are upset with her.
by Anonymous | reply 241 | October 28, 2023 7:01 AM |
It’s not necessarily a tragedy, but certainly a notable detail that someone who has been a major public face and voice for indigenous people over the span of 60+ years does not actually have indigenous ancestry. The way St. Marie described her situation (handed over like a package to adoptive parents, with no knowledge of her background except that she was Native), sounds more like an elaborate scenario than a misunderstanding about heritage in the pre-DNA test days. It’s plausible that there might be a scenario in which she was told and believed that she didn’t share DNA with the rest of her family (i.e., illegitimacy). There are also plausible scenarios in which no one else instilled these beliefs in her, but she convinced herself of them: for instance, if she were abused, believing that she was part of a tribe to which she could someday return may have had a protective element.
That said, I found her statement in defense of herself manipulative in a way that suggests she was knowingly lying: making shady references to her mother’s shocking late-in-life disclosures, bringing up her brother’s abuse and that family member she’s never named, emphasizing how the CBC’s investigation triggers earlier trauma, etc. If she’s never knowingly lied or misrepresented her heritage, it would be easy enough to say so, remind the public of her formal adoption by a Native family, and point out that when she was younger, people relied on family members to tell them about their backgrounds and these stories weren’t always accurate. Instead, she recorded a litany of lightly described horrors.
I’ve enjoyed a lot of Buffy’s music over the years, but it does shift my impression of her to think she was playing a character.

My Husband is Lakota Native American. Rosebud Reservation South Dakota. He is 80 and I'm 67. He(Leo) is on the "roles" . All Native people had to have a reservation. All Native people had to be on the roles. The roles were their birthplace, name and what reservation. You had to have permission to leave the Rez from the Indian agent. And come back to the Rez.
The roles have now been eliminated. So when all the old Natives die off? Who gets the reservation lands? The Native people or the Government?
Leo doesn't get checks from the BIA. He does get a few hundred dollars a year from the renters of his 650 acres. All white farmers who got to lease his land per the BIA. They make thousands of dollars. Leo never got a free college education cause he's Native. Leo doesn't get casino money either.
Leo was sent to Catholic Indian Boarding School because "Indians" couldn't go to public school. And that was all Indians across the US.
He was raped and beaten by the priests. And beaten and tortured by the nuns. He has scars on his legs, arms, chest and back. I asked him about the scars on his head. The nuns used to beat his head against the walls until he bled. His Brother was killed there. And so many other horrible things. Happened in Marty, So. Dakota.
Leo doesn't care about Warren or Buffy St Marie(he loves her music). Leo and his people have more important things to worry about.
Leo and his people want the treaties honored. None have been honored and all broken. They want the black hills back. He knows that will never happen. Leo is not from India yet endures being called Indian with grace. He makes fun of it. He wears a tshirt that says " I'm FBI" "Full blooded Indian".
Leo is different. Not European. I can't explain it. His tribe is a matriarchy. He is the kindest Man I've ever met. And one myth that is true? Big cock!!!!! 😎

The high school graduation photo she looks like she has some Italian and her hair looks like it’s a medium brown color not the jet black color she’s had for many years.
I watched her response video and she casts herself as an outcast in her hometown. She looked like a normal teenager in 1958 and was involved in a lot of school activities. Her skin tone got darker as she got more prominent. The home movies don’t show her looking much different than her siblings.

Thanks for clarifying the situation with the brother. That is pretty shitty, but again, it's internal. The brother really had no right to tell on her. Does that justify her letter and threat? No, of course not, but I'm still not too clear on what she did wrong, aside from that, in the bigger picture.
Perhaps she really believed she was part of a particular tribe and was Native American. Maybe someone told her that when she was little and when she found out the truth, she didn't want to let it go. And maybe she just thought she could pull it off and help bring the plight of the American Indian to a larger awareness. I'm still not seeing anything that her claiming to be Native American has negatively affected. In these times where everyone is allowed to be trans-whatever this story seems like a nothing. I read about her career and her music and her activism (because frankly, all I ever knew about her was she co-wrote Up Where We Belong) and it all seems positive. It's not like she shoved Cristal Connors down the stairs.

Jacqueline Keeler:
While a move toward a preferred Native identity — a real-life cosplay experience — may be liberating for the individual, it dangerously erases the political reality and history of oppression experienced by tribal nations and their citizens. ... Pretendianism, therefore, is not just about replacing authentic Native voices with mummers in red face. It constitutes a cynical stealing of gains made by people of color in this country. It is a disturbing financial theft from some of the poorest people in America. The cost of Pretendianism is more than just the misleading play-acting of a role for an unsuspecting American audience. It causes harm to Native nations, communities and individuals who have already endured enough. Fact-checking claims of Native identity may appear unseemly to some, but it is a small imposition to reduce the continued trauma of Native Americans and the theft of our culture.

I am 1/3rd Native American, DNA to prove it. So I have lots of aunts and uncles who are even higher percentages. Her appearance is pretty convincing, high cheek bones, for example. Long hair and a tan can help that look a lot. Herc's the deal, none of the woman I know who are Native American actually try to look Native America. They all have short hair, modern clothes and jewelry, not feathers and beads.
The one facial characteristic that does not match up with the woman in my family is the eyes. Native Americans dont have round European eyes, they have a slightly angled edge to them. Sort of Asian, but not really. They fold outward not under. In older age, the lid can get really droopy to the point it can cause vision problems. Half of the woman in my family on that side had to get minor eyelid surgery.

An entertainer fudging their backstory is very different from making a false claim to forge a whole career as an NAACP official or gain an edge in winning limited academic spots.
If an actor lied about being native America in 2023 to get a specific role playing a Native American, that would be bad. But crafting a Native American persona in the 1960’s? It’s just not that big of a deal. It’s like saying you were discovered at a soda fountain.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a kernel of truth somewhere in her story. Maybe her siblings are half siblings. If her biological father was Native American (or black or Pacific Islander) it wouldn’t show up on the birth certificate. I’m not saying this is likely, just that’s it’s one possibility. And it would explain her parents’ silence on the issue. I sort of want this to be the case so she can now take a DNA test and SHOCK THE WORLD.

There’s a newspaper article at this link that’s from the early 1960s where her uncle corrects the newspapers saying Buffy isn’t Indian and that is the ‘PR agents” who are pushing the Indian angle just to get her famous. No doubt this is what Buffy told her family when she first started posing as “an Indian girl.”
“Oh don’t worry, everyone has to have something that gets people’s attention. The PR agency thinks this will really launch my career. Just go along with it.”
Then, years later, when she was a “Native American icon” she threatened her brother that she’d tell everyone he sexually abused her as a child if he continued giving interviews saying she’s not Indian.

I'm a folksinger — I enjoy Buffy's music but there always was something that didn't feel genuine about her. Perhaps it has to do with her repertoire of Anglo-American folk songs that have nothing to do with being indigenous. She was like a discount store Joan Baez with a screeching voice. I'm sad to see she was a fraud regarding her nationality but it comes as no surprise. You could tell anybody in the press ANYTHING in the 1960s and they bought it instantly.
She is very Italian-looking to me now since we saw some of her younger photos before she went Pretendian. The clerk of court who presented her 100% authentic birth certificate ties together the whole investigation. Outside of the Piapot Cree reservation stuff, all her awards should be rescinded because they were all in recognition of her being First Nations/Indigenous. None of this will stop me from singing "Universal Soldier", but I do know that my version is probably more reminiscent of Donovan than the original writer.
I think she buys the same brand of canned spray tan as Donald, just several shades darker. I believe her retirement was convenient for her — she and her legal team knew this was coming.

I'm Native American biologically, officially, factually. Both my parents were enrolled members of the same tribe and here I am along with my siblings.
I didn't think I could be shocked anymore. I thought I'd experienced and heard it all.
I'm not a cynic, I'm a realist.
BUT
Now, since this came out, and looking back at BS-M's career, I realize there was always something mysterious about her, even though I accepted, at face value, she was a First Nations Cree from Canada.
So, a part of me isn't surprised and the cynic that I deny being still has a beating heart. Truth is dead.
Something else has to be acknowledged, too, and it isn't to let BS-M off the hook. That isn't possible.
It's this. Back in the 60s and 70s, after we were all conquered, and therefore, it was the "cool" and safe thing to do, adopting Native American style and claiming ancestry was faddish, it was, to use a dated word "In".
Whoever posted upthread that every performer needed a gimmick, well, there is a lot to that observation. BS-M's moral failing is that she never corrected the record.

Just watched the documentary and the bitch clearly lied about it all. She was born into a white family and has no biological ties to indigenous heritage. There are also numerous inconsistencies in the stories she's told over the years (e.g. part of the "great scoop" which didn't start for well over a decade after she was born). Also watching the clips of her, I'm pretty certain she "browns up." I don't believe a word she says about her brother molesting her.
Okay so yes, she has stood up for indigenous rights but she also appropriated their culture to make millions. Basically (like many other "pretendians") she's a white woman who felt she needs something "special" about her to stand out. She also was awarded Canada's highest honour without even being Canadian.

R283 Powwows are a huge deal around here. I used to work closely with a few reserves, which is where I first saw Buffy perform. People travel all over the country, some even go to the States to watch them and to compete. First Nations people in Canada are immediately entitled to Permanent Residency upon entering the US so many who travel the circuit do both. I knew people on Piapot with friends and family in Montana, for example. Chief Piapot is a well known figure here in Canada, atleast, he should be. Anyway, it's totally likely Buffy was attending these powwows to perform and network back in the day. The people of Piapot are very loving and I think they would've been impressed by her and so they welcomed her with open arms. She probably fed them a story as part of her grift. The rest is history.

One weirdly random thing was her comment to the kid on Sesame Street who said that his grandmother (I think) read him a story about a native American, and her response was something like "but was she a REAL Native American? Because I am REAL." She's gross. Down to her "my truth" and "wrong-side-of-the-blanket" BS spin upon getting called out. She had many opportunities to make this work for her, or to explain. But everything is so murky, and appears to rely on dead relatives who can no longer refute her bullshit claims. No pity.

Thing is she’s been getting called out for years. Her uncle went to the newspaper and corrected them. Her brother told PBS Buffy wasn’t Native American but they went ahead and gave her the Sesame Street episode. Relatives wrote letters to editors. Her niece and nephew tried telling people after she made terrible accusations when their father was dead. She claimed she was at Alcatraz during the occupation. But everybody just ignored it and let her play righteous Indian princess.
She’s a sociopath. The media enabled her. People like her hurt the movement by native Americans that was gathering strength in 1950s and 1970s. People like her fucking infiltrated the Native American movement.
I don’t believe for 1 second that she was persecuted by LBJ and Nixon. FBI would’ve found out she was a white girl from Massachusetts in no tine flat and she would’ve been exposed. Unless…….they got a quid pro quo from her to keep her cover story.

[Quote] What did Rachel Dolzal do for people exactly? Oh right nothing. - R262
Like Buffy, Rachel Dolezal faked her way into a position for social justice.
She “has been a civil rights activist in her adopted home of Spokane, Washington, and, subsequently, was elected as the chapter president of the NAACP” - ABC News
by Anonymous | reply 323 | October 28, 2023 9:14 PM |
Rachel and Buffy could have been welcomed as allies if they had been honest. But they chose not to be. Rachel even attended Howard U. Buffy was embraced by natives and adopted by one couple - accepted into their tribe. Those two likely saw through Buffy's grift and it didn't matter. It's the cynical lying that is the problem for society in general. It's a form of stolen valor, or victimhood. It's a character flaw. Fraudsters cause wreckage in their families, relationships, and professions.

Buffy started learning about Native Americans in university. Her course record is posted in one of the links above. She could have been a white girl, a folk singer and started to share her love for native culture, as a white girl. But she didn't do that. In Britney's memoire, Justin is derided for being a wigga. But millions of white american boys of certain generation really got into black pop culture. So it's not a crime that Justin was a wigga, and he didn't lie and say he was half black to get more cred. Justin, like millions of others, does not have the mental illness that fraudsters have.
Reinvention is a constant theme in American culture. There are hundreds or thousands of novels and movies about people who reinvent their entire identities. Buffy could do it because part of American culture for 200 years was unspoken acceptance that people can do this. There were some advantages to it being possible - upward mobility and avoidance of danger.
It's a complex and fascinating, shadowy part of American culture.

For comparison purposes: See The Great Gatsby. Also, the interesting movie about social class: Working Girl, which came from a long line of movies about women who had to reinvent themselves, in the process being frauds, to succeed...or escape.

Trump is an enormous fraudster, and grifter. No matter how often and clearly New York Metropolitan area people told the nation that the guy was a fraud and grifter, American culture in general WOULD NOT BELIEVE IT. They wanted the illusions he was selling. The media had a hand in that because they liked the hits and numbers that coverage of Trump, the billionaire businessman, produced. They liked false equivalencies. The true story was overlooked and downplayed because the FRAUD of this figure was making money for everyone.
by Anonymous | reply 329 | October 28, 2023 9:35 PM |
You know in many other countries, especially Europe, it is not so easy to reinvent oneself because of the level of bureaucratic checking that is necessary to get through life. Until very recent decades in the USA, there was almost NO checking of references in the professional world. Yet try to get a job in western or Central Europe. A hire must produce a stack of authenticated copies of diplomas and certificates from every former employer. None of this existed for centuries in the USA. It's only recently that American culture has embraced background checks and proofs of identity and "authenticity". Buffy's birth certificate was never necessary or required for anything. Such is not the case in other countries.

I went to Catholic high school, and was shocked my public school friends had to get photo ID. Then I went to local community college and didn’t have photo ID. We carried our semester schedules with us, folded up in a pocket. They were about 5” by 7”. If a prof saw you wandering around they’d ask where you were going. You’d pull out your schedul, show them and say you were looking for the language lab or science class.
Wasn’t until I moved to the big city and went to university that I got a photo ID for school. That’s how I know it’s true that Trump paid off people to take tests for him.

I think reinventing yourself is fine when you’re escaping a social, economic or religious stigma. But it can also be the sign of a con artist. To spend a lifetime gaining awards and recognition for being something you’re not seems sociopathic. I guess she was far too gone to admit the truth.

Pretendians have to have the right hair and skin tone; Dolezal kept her kinky perm maintained, and Saint-Marie left her dark Italian hair long and wild (and probably dyed at some point). Both of their face bronzing looks terrible upon scrutiny, especially S-M's matte powdery effect. Just wow.

Race is a social construct anyhow, so if a person of indigenous ancestry (however that is defined) is raised by a white family from infancy — with no connection to their indigenous family — the experience of their culture is literally skin-deep. The darker they are, the more discrimination they face. When Buffy started identifying as Cree and darkening her skin, she started experiencing the world as she would have as an actual adopted Native American who has to do research and footwork to reconnect to their “heritage.”

What’s particularly mortifying about this exposé is that Buffy was always first in the queue when it came to decrying cultural appropriation. So many interviews where she criticises white people for donning the outfits and feathered headdresses. All along it was projection! Still, she certainly committed to the lie. And some of her albums are great, though she was never one for fully grasping the potential of chords. Her songs are generally kumbayah level and so it’s left to the production and arrangement (eg on the Illuminations album) to provide a halfway satisfying level of complexity. .

For all of you folks talking about DNA, I hate to disappoint you.
DNA results are fairly useless in determining Native American background. So all of this 'why doesn't she take a test?' means nothing.
Amongst other reasons, the commercial DNA testing company's comparison databases have statistically useless tiny NA collections.

by Anonymous | reply 417 | November 1, 2023 12:31 AM |
R416 The link posted basically says that tribal and NA identity is based on a shared culture. The tests are useful in telling whether someone has any genetic connection to NA ancestry. It can't tell if you were adopted into a tribe or perhaps, your ancestry is so far back that nothing specifically NA remains in your genes. I would doubt that the tests have enough data to confirm tribe. I would say they are far from useless though.
by Anonymous | reply 418 | November 1, 2023 1:58 AM |
continuing from R418. Buffy could take the test to confirm that she at least has detectable NA DNA. The problem is that she made the whole thing up and intimidated people to keep her secret.

There have been other articles talking about these companies missing most Native American dna and it’s because native Americans tend to be low-income and haven’t been tested because they won’t spend the money on it, thereby making the database incomplete. Returning 0% na on people who absolutely know for a fact they have it is very common. This testing is not the be-all, end-all most people think it is.

R426 The reason for a relatively low database of NA DNA has nothing to do with Indians being poor. They are discouraged to do it by their leadership. They want NA identity to go hand in hand with the culture rather than genetics. The National Geographic Geographic Project that started all of the direct to consumer DNA testing offered free DNA testing to indigenous peoples all over the world and probably still do. There is a fair amount of NA DNA in ancestry and 23&Me databases thanks to Mexicans. Mexicans have a pretty high percentage of NA DNA even though many do not identify as NA. I've been actively involved with this for at leat 15 years and have attended lectures given by Spencer Wells on the subject when he was the project director.

by Anonymous | reply 431 | November 1, 2023 5:06 AM |
I know this is getting off the topic of Buffy St-Marie, but some might find it interesting. It delves into some of the reasons that NA peoples are suspicious of DNA testing. The article brings up a number of objections, with one of them being concerns that the testing might be used to show they came from somewhere else (being "disinherited" so to speak). It's been pretty well established that NAs originated in Asia and crossed the Bering Strait in several different migrations. This goes against some of the legends and spiritual beliefs of NAs that say they are from the Americas since the beginning of time.

What R421 said.
If she took a DNA test, it would show she's whiter than Whitey McWhiterson. Her parents were whites from Massachusetts. As she gained fame in the '60s and '70s, she had an entire white family in Mass who were like, "What the fuck is she doing?" And some family members said, leave her alone or she'll sue us.
The documentary showed the birth certificate, the yearbook photos, even home movies. Case closed.
Buffy even tried to sic her lawyers on the CBC, and the network was like, nope, we have plenty of proof.

What about Buffy’s right to self-identify? She knows who she is, as her statement makes clear. Even if she’s only indigenous at essence level rather than by DNA, that’s enough. Plus the media is overlooking another ace up her sleeve: she’s indigenous by penetration - her son’s father was indigenous.

My brother in law got his kids through college with advanced degrees and no student loan debt using tribal scholarships. His grandmother was a member of some tribe. She was 50% native which made his mom %25 percent native which made his kids about as native American as my cat. He was an NFL ref and at the time and the NFL had some sort of financial benefit for minority game officials. So he shows up to join the program and the black referees are like WTF??? He proudly states he's NA and they said the fuck you are. Grifters gonna grift.

by Anonymous | reply 447 | November 1, 2023 3:51 PM |
If she's taking up the slot for indigenous women I'm not sure the real problem is Buffy. I see her as a kid starting the story for excitement and trying to be original, then it became her stairway to stardom, then it just got out of control, then she started believing it on some sort of level. Then she got nasty to protect her secret. I'm not excusing what she's done but my hatred and indignation sort of has it's limits. So I can't waste to much time on this one. Though it is pretty funny. TBH I kind of like her fuck off way of dealing with it. No matter what she said or did no one coming for her is going to be satisfied with anything she says or does on the matter Again I get the shittiness of it but the thing that keeps coming to my mind is why now? For fuck sake.

I suspect that in Canada, where she is an Officer of the Order of Canada (it’s not nobility, but still an honor) they might be pissed off the same way people in the US have claimed a Purple Heart they weren’t given, R448.
by Anonymous | reply 449 | November 1, 2023 5:29 PM |
There are about a million other things the CBC could have done stories on - like why Pierre Poilievre won't get security clearance, Stephen Harper's involvement with the IDU and his ties to Putin, Orban, and other despots, the number of so-called orphan wells in Alberta and how the taxpayer is on the hook for cleaning them up.
by Anonymous | reply 450 | November 1, 2023 5:31 PM |
My feelings are similar to R448’s. I think her age and era are mitigating factors. I don’t know why, but I’m cutting her a lot of slack. While she clearly benefited from the NA identify, I suspect native Americans benefited from her public persona. The net effect was positive for native Americans. She didn’t take scholarships or fill quotas.
I’m imagining a girl who, for whatever reason, felt removed from her family. The fantasy you are adopted is a common one, even among kids who don’t feel apart from their families. She wasn’t particularly attractive by the Caucasian beauty standards of her time, so it makes sense that she would gravitate to an “ethnic” look that worked a little better for her.
The thing with her brother and the threats are what’s not possible to get past. But, ultimately, there are two things that are impossible to know:
1. Was her father her biological father and were there any credible suspicions he wasn’t?
2. Was there any abuse?
Given her age, it’s not like old friends and classmates are likely to come forth and give perspective on what her family dynamics were when she was a child. I don’t want to cast dispersions on her dead brother, but I also have to wonder what he had to gain by “outing” her. Why did she have to send the threatening letter? Today, it would make sense. But back then why would he feel the need to set the record straight about her ethnicity? It wasn’t hurting him. So it’s suggestive of existing bad blood.

R451 Did you watch the video? Her brother was not the only one outing her. Her uncle did first in the 60s. Then a niece and nephew did for CBC.
The family probably felt guilt by association, plus it must be a mind fuck to have your blood relative disown your family by pretending they aren’t kin.
As her brother states in a letter, he felt she was stealing prominence from real native people. Especially since she was about to go on television and lie to millions of children.
Maybe you’re used to this post-truth era, but even if she had a different father, which there is zero evidence of, she created a cockamamie stolen valor scenario with the 60s sweep sob story.
If the whole thing started as a minor falsehood that grew out of control, it did because she kept at it, rejiggering her story and thrusting herself in the public eye in her regalia, collecting awards she didn’t deserve.
by Anonymous | reply 456 | November 1, 2023 6:35 PM |
R456 Yup. It appears based on the CBC documentary that once Buffy's immediate family started airing the truth, she threatened them with legal action and accused her brother of sexually assaulting her as a child.
R451 Admittedly at first I was also like leave the old woman alone, but I've changed my tune. Yes she may have done some good for indigenous rights and awareness BUT she did so by appropriating indigenous culture and making millions off of it.
by Anonymous | reply 457 | November 1, 2023 6:43 PM |
R451 According to Buffy’s brother’s daughter, it was the PBS producers who contacted him after he had a chance meeting. with Buffy who introduced him as her brother.
Someone later called and asked him his ethnicity and he was honest. Then her high-profile record industry lawyers created a menacing letter, which was sent along with her handwritten accusation of abuse.

Assuming she’s telling the truth about her brother being a pedophile, she withheld that info and used it as a bargaining chip to cover up her fraud instead of disclosing it, which could have possible saved more kids from being molested. Less evil than lying about it, but still kind of evil.

Chronic cruelty to her throughout her upbringing. Well, if the brother's daughter doesn't believe her father was guilty of physically and sexually abusing Buffy (as she said in the 2018 bio), she may want to point out Buffy's lack of credibility on her origin stories. Buffy's sister may feel that her mother has been misrepresented as an accomplice in Buffy's adoption narrative and wants to set the record straight. Seeing someone publicly honored for decades as a representative of something you believe is based on a conscious deception can't be easy.

Buffy deserves a break. I think she told a small lie that got out of control. So by the time she was signing with Vanguard, she was trapped - she might even have thought her contract hinged on her being indigenous and she wouldn’t become a star if she retracted. And clearly, she then dedicated her life to campaigning and advocating as a kind of penance/atonement.

Yeah, no, R551. Not even a good try.
by Anonymous | reply 552 | November 12, 2023 9:45 AM |
R552 Yeah just a little out of control. Not bald faced fucking lying.
by Anonymous | reply 553 | November 12, 2023 9:54 AM |
R551 Buffy's PR?
Even the real Indians (feather, not dot) are quiet about Buffy. Not a word since the documentary aired.
Nobody else is speaking out on her behalf.

She has ascended into the pantheon of Great American Grifters.

This reminds me of the Louis CK “This is how I talk” sketch on SNL.

R554, not true. The tribe who adopted Buffy have spoken out in her support. If they can forgive and understand then anyone else finding fault with Buffy is just indulging themselves in self-righteous posturing.
by Anonymous | reply 559 | November 12, 2023 6:44 PM |
R559: Hardly...
If that's your idea of support, have at it.

OP. Get a life.
by Anonymous | reply 562 | November 12, 2023 7:53 PM |
Bluffy has insinuated that she was born out of wedlock. “on the wrong side of the blanket,” meaning (I guess) that her mom was into native men on the side. but the white husband was clueless, which is why he’s named as the father on the birth certificate.
by Anonymous | reply 564 | November 12, 2023 8:02 PM |
R546 I wasn't born yet so can't say with absolute certainty, but the chances of being knocked up by a Native American/Indigenous person in Wakefield, Massachusetts in 1941 were slim to none.

Joni Mitchell credits Buffy for her career. She says she wouldn't have been "discovered" without Buffy recording her songs, playing Joni's homemade recordings for record executives, finding her a manager, and just pushing Joni's music wherever she could. So maybe that balances it out.

You hate it so much that you've posted in it 18 times, r570. Do you do anything here other than troll? Try scrolling instead of trolling.
Poor Buffy. What a way to end your career.

She also claims LBJ took the time to write radio stations, directing them not to play her music. That is how she explained a career slump. She is a serial fantasist/liar.
by Anonymous | reply 577 | November 13, 2023 4:17 PM |
I think she got away with it for so long by focusing on her Native heritage fantasy instead of having many diverse fantasies and conflicting lies. Her biggest slip-up was early when she kept naming different Nations, but when she finally settled on one, the controversy faded away.
by Anonymous | reply 578 | November 13, 2023 5:02 PM |
R573 it’s been in recent thread roll for weeks on end for no good reason. She’s ugly and I’m fucking tired of her! And you!
by Anonymous | reply 579 | November 13, 2023 8:02 PM |
I keep telling you to block the thread or temporarily disable the previews, r579, but you seem to prefer to suffer and bitch about it.
Have fun with that.
There's only 20 more posts left in this thread. If someone makes a part 2, maybe you'll get lucky and they'll use a different photo.

Why not simply make it disappear, R579, by clicking on the eyeball symbol on the upper right hand side of this screen? Orange means you see it, black means you don't.

by Anonymous | reply 582 | November 13, 2023 8:46 PM |
Not on your thread list on the right. By posting in the thread, it's going to follow you around.
If you mean the thread is still on DL, you're right.
If you're Muriel, you can make it disappear.
If not, you'll just have to suck it up and live with Buffy.
by Anonymous | reply 583 | November 13, 2023 8:50 PM |
Maybe she meant call center Indian?

Buffy is your Babadook. Uh-oh.

She should have picked a tribe that spoke French. Then the BBC would have totally ignored the story.

Can’t she just take the Hilaria approach and pretend the whole expose never happened? Maybe she could give interviews in made-up native tongues to address the topic.

Buffy's on the warpath now and admits to NOTHING!

I’ve always believed it takes rain and sunshine to bring a rainbow. This great honour does indeed come after the rain – as I continue to absorb and process the recent attack on my character, life and legacy. It’s a deep wound to my inner child, but as an 82-year-old now, I’m strong – and these allegations do not shake me.
The attack on my character is full of mistakes and omissions. While I will not stoop to respond to every false allegation, I feel it is important to clarify two things.
First, the central proof used to question my identity is a story fabricated by my abuser and repeated by two members of my estranged family I don’t even know. This has been incredibly re-traumatizing for me and unfair to all involved. It hurts me deeply to discover that my estranged family grew up scared of me and thinking these lies because of a letter I sent intended to protect me from further abuse from my brother. I want to be clear, I do not blame them. They, of course, want to believe their father. I have evidence I was sexually abused by my brother, but I can’t tolerate discomforting his children even more. I wish them only the best and hope they move forward from this and find peace, as I am trying to do.
Being an “Indian” has little to do with sperm tracking and colonial record keeping: It has to do with community, culture, knowledge, teachings, who claims you, who you love, who loves you, and who’s your family.
