It's not as simple as that, although they got the ball rolling. Overall, state hyperinterference in the economy has characterized Argentina since the 1950s, with a few excursions into military dictatorship. Currency mismanagement and crises in the last forty years piled in. 40% of the people live in poverty. Inflation is around 100%. It's a massive exporter of grain, crippled by drought the last few years. The political will doesn't exist to break the back of the problem. It is probably the most fucked up country, economically, on the planet, despite being the 2nd biggest economy in South America. It has spent more time in recession since the 1950s than any other country with an advanced economy. It's quite sad, really.

First round winner was Economic Minister Sergio Massa.

My first encounter with people from Uruguay and Argentina was anything but positive. Snotty and annoyingly eccentric. My shipmate was married to a woman from Uruguay. She and her sisters were obnoxious especially after they had a few drinks. They had a gay friend from Argentina who would brag about his surgery to repair his anus after some rough sex with a trick…my friend and his wife eventually got divorced after he tried to kill her after she called him the N word. She married a black man and called him that. He was an asshole though and very much a bully. But what a crew. One of the sisters was dating a guy in the Saudi Arabian Navy and she beat him with her shoes whenever she was drunk, which was often. The other sister was married to a hot older man who was nice. She bragged about their house in Los Angeles (he was attached to the entertainment industry somehow) and their cars and trips and was extremely materialistic. They’d fight amongst themselves and end up crying and hugging each other and promised they’d never fight again…until the next time.

Exhausting people.

R26 I think the problem is that Argentinians can't move on from what happened in the 70's. The military caused a lot of emotional damage to the country but the Peronist movement has used that to ensconce themselves into power and they are among the most corrupt regimes in the world, a bunch of thieves and thugs.

They have an annual inflation of 100%, 40 percent poverty and the winning presidential candidate is the current Economy minister, Peronist candidate Sergio Massa! It's unbelievable.

R25 Chile had mass riots, at least in Santiago, when the government attempted to raise ticket prices for the Metro in 2019. It included burning down Catholic churches and metro stations. The country has a huge underclass which has become more obvious because the upper middle class has also grown a lot since the mid-2000s.

Argentina's middle class is becoming extinct - due to the economy and emigration with many leaving for Italy, Spain, and the US.

To clarify I didn't vote for him, but he's the only candidate who presented an actual economic plan and presented a new option from the same fucking dumpster fire political parties we've had for decades. Plus, it's a vote against Massa who is 100% responsible for the 100% + inflation (he has been the head of Ministry of Economy for almost 2 years) yet will still likely be president for 4 more years.
